Derek Klena to return to 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical' on Broadway

The Tony Award-nominated actor returns to the starring role of Christian, whom he first played in the 10-time Tony-Award-winning musical from 2022-23.

Welcome back to the Moulin Rouge! Derek Klena will rejoin the Moulin Rouge! The Musical Broadway cast from February 6 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.

Klena will succeed Casey Cott in the lead role of Christian, which Klena first played from spring 2022 to summer 2023. Klena is also known for his Tony Award-nominated performance in Jagged Little Pill and other Broadway runs in Anastasia, The Bridges of Madison County, and Wicked.

Klena joins the Moulin Rouge! cast alongside Boy George as Harold Zidler. As previously announced, Boy George also begins performances on February 6 and will perform through May 12. Klena's end date has not been announced.

The current Moulin Rouge! cast includes Cott as Christian, Courtney Reed as Satine, Eric Anderson as Harold Zidler, André Ward as Toulouse-Lautrec, David Harris as The Duke, Gabe Martínez as Santiago, and Sophie Carmen-Jones as Nini.

Based on the hit Baz Luhrmann movie musical, Moulin Rouge! The Musical sets the star-crossed love story of writer Christian and showgirl Satine to dozens of pop songs from the '40s through today. The show won 10 Tony Awards in 2021, including Best Musical.
