Welcome to the Moulin Rouge! [Meg Donnelly](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/meg-donnelly) will join the cast of [*Moulin Rouge! The Musical*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/15911-moulin-rouge-the-musical-on-broadway-tickets) on Broadway later this fall, starring as Satine from November 11, 2025 to March 1, 2026 at the [Al Hirschfeld Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/venues/al-hirschfeld-theatre).

Donnelly rose to fame with her onscreen performances as Addison Wells in the *Zombies* film franchise, Taylor Otto on ABC's *American Housewife*, and Mary Campbell on the CW's *The Winchesters*. *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* marks her Broadway debut.

"I have been dreaming of this moment since birth, and it is hard to fathom it is even real," Donnelly said in a statement. "I am beyond excited to play Satine and to be joining this incredible show, cast, and crew.

"You can tell it is truly family at *Moulin Rouge! The Musical*, everyone has been extremely welcoming & supportive. Ah! I am so happy to be surrounded by theatre kids again. I am coming home! This whole time I keep picturing what little me would be thinking!? I am doing this for her.”

Donnelly will replace current cast member [Ashley Loren](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/ashley-loren) as Satine. The company also includes [Christian Douglas](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/christian-douglas) as Christian, [Wayne Brady](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/wayne-brady) as Harold Zidler, and [David Harris](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/david-harris) as The Duke of Monroth from September 30.

As [previously announced](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/bob-the-drag-queen-to-make-broadway-debut-in-moulin-rouge-the-musical), Robert Petkoff will star as Zidler from November 11 to January 25, after which [Bob the Drag Queen](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/bob-the-drag-queen) will take over the role through March 22.

*Moulin Rouge! The Musical*, adapted from Baz Luhrmann's beloved film, sets the star-crossed love story of a writer and a showgirl to a score of pop hits. In 2021, the show won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Before *Moulin Rouge!* on Broadway came to be, the love story of a writer and a showgirl captivated fans on screen. The *Moulin Rouge!* movie grossed over $179 million worldwide and earned Catherine Martin two Oscars (for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design) at the 74th Academy Awards, where it received a further six nominations, including Best Picture. The movie musical starred Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, and Jim Broadbent, along with John Leguizamo and Richard Roxburgh.

The original *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* Broadway company was led by Tony Award winner [Aaron Tveit](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/aaron-tveit) as Christian and Tony nominee [Karen Olivo](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/karen-olivo) as Satine. [Danny Burstein](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/danny-burstein) took home his first Tony Award, after six previous nominations, for playing the Moulin Rouge's emcee, Harold Zidler. They all originated their roles at the pre-Broadway world premiere engagement of *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* at Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre in 2018.

*Moulin Rouge! The Musical* on Broadway is a love story about Christian, an American writer looking for inspiration in Paris, and Satine, a star showgirl and courtesan, within the Moulin Rouge nightclub at the turn of the 20th century. As Satine has been promised to the wealthy Duke, who promises to save her and the club from bankruptcy, her and Christian's romance blossoms in secret behind the scenes — but is love enough?

## Is *Moulin Rouge* a jukebox musical?

*Moulin Rouge! The Musical* is a jukebox musical. Like the movie, which featured versions of existing pop songs like "Lady Marmalade," "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," "Roxanne," and "Your Song," *Moulin Rouge!* on Broadway also has a pop score. The show brings "some of the most beloved popular music of the last 50 years to the stage," including all the aforementioned fan-favorite songs from the movie. There are also dozens more chart-toppers from Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and many more, plus the movie's one original song, "Come What May."

Based on the award-winning 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* follows a couple whose world is turned upside down by true love and passion in turn-of-the-century Paris. The writer Christian and the courtesan Satine fall into a forbidden backstage romance at the titular nightclub  — until Christian realizes there’s more than just the villainous Duke putting a stop to their relationship.

Between 2002 and 2003, shortly after the *Moulin Rouge!* movie got a Best Picture Oscar nomination and two other wins, rumors started to fly about a stage adaptation. Those rumors faded, but finally proved true in 2016, when *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* was officially announced. Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo led the show’s first workshop in 2017, and they went on to star in the 2018 world premiere in Boston and the 2019 Broadway premiere.

Both received Tony nominations for their performances, and Tveit and Danny Burstein (as Harold Zidler) won awards. *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* also swept the design categories, winning for set, costume, lighting, and sound design. The musical’s cast recording also got a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Theater Album.

## What to watch for

- In the movie, Christian is an Englishman. In *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* on Broadway, Christian is an American fleeing the Industrial Revolution in search of artistic purpose.
- Baz Luhrmann, who directed and co-wrote the iconic 2001 film, came from a very artistic background. His mother was a ballroom dance instructor who gave him lessons early on, and his father insisted he study painting and music.
- Luhrmann says director Alex Timbers “feels like a younger cousin,” and Timbers says Luhrmann’s work inspires him. Luhrmann has watched performances of *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* on Broadway and is a keen supporter of the show. 
- *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* is loosely based on two classic stories. One is Puccini’s opera *La Bohème*, also about bohemian friends in 20th-century Paris. The other is the tragic Greek myth of Orpheus, a talented musician who seeks to rescue his true love, Eurydice, from the clutches of Hades. (The Broadway musical *Hadestown* is also, and more directly, based on that myth.)
- The *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* set contains homages to the film and the real Moulin Rouge. The iconic elephant-shaped dressing room and red windmill from the movie are recreated here, and both are also hallmarks of the actual nightclub.
- One of the *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* characters, a bohemian artist named Toulouse-Lautrec, was a real French artist well known for creating promotional posters for the Moulin Rouge. Similarly, the character of nightclub owner Harold Zidler is partly named for the real club’s co-founder, Charles Zidler.
- The *Moulin Rouge!* film is part of Luhrmann’s “Red Curtain Trilogy” of movies with the performing arts — theatre, dance, poetry, song — as a major theme and storytelling tool. The others are *Strictly Ballroom* and *Romeo + Juliet*. Like *Moulin Rouge!*, *Strictly Ballroom* has become a stage musical in the U.K. *Romeo + Juliet* hasn’t yet joined them, but you never know!

In 2002 Baz Luhrmann, the idiosyncratic Australian film and theatre director, brought his stunning 1990 Opera Australia production of Puccini's La Bohème from Sydney Opera House to Broadway, a tale of a consumptive heroine and her bohemian friends living in rooftop Parisian digs. Now 17 years later, we're back in similar territory for this bedazzling stage transition of Luhrmann's 2001 film "Moulin Rouge!," which underlines just how much La Bohème inspired it -- an opera that also provided the source for Rent, which was set in 1990s New York.Broadway is now (over)populated by jukebox musicals -- current attractions include shows devoted to <a href="/show/aint-too-proud-the-life-and-times-of-the-temptations">The Temptations</a>, <a href="/show/beautiful-the-carole-king-musical">Carole King</a> and <a href="/show/the-cher-show">Cher</a>, with a transfer of <a href="/show/tina-the-tina-turner-musical">Tina -&nbsp;The Tina Turner Musical</a> from the West End due to arrive in October, plus new musicals based on albums by Alanis Morissette (<a href="/show/jagged-little-pill">Jagged Little Pill</a>)&nbsp; and David Byrne (<a href="/show/david-byrnes-american-utopia">American Utopia</a>) also planning Broadway engagements in October and November, respectively. But <a href="/show/moulin-rouge-the-musical">Moulin Rouge! The Musical</a> is in a league of originality and creativity all of its own; with a song stack of some 70 pop hits from the 40s to the present day, it is the ultimate jukebox show, encompassing Elton John, Sting and Katy Perry, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Bob Dylan and even Rodgers and Hammerstein, amongst numerous others.Of course, many of those songs are only heard in the briefest of snatches; in one duet between Satine, the courtesan nightclub performer and Christian, the visiting American writer who stumbles into her life and falls unexpectedly in love with her, there are quotations from some 25 separate songs.Part of the immense musical fun of the evening is spotting all these goodies, even if there's a bit of an accompanying frustration that comparatively few of them are heard in full. Musical supervisor and orchestrator Justin Levine does a heroic job of marshalling them all into a cohesive, playful whole, and book writer John Logan folds them brilliantly into the plot so that they all serve a narrative as well as presentational purpose.But if the show is both tireless and at times relentless in shoehorning so much material into it, director Alex Timbers, his choreographer Sonya Tayeh and his designers Derek McLane (sets), Catherine Zuber (costumes), Justin Townsend (lighting) and Peter Hylenski (sound) turn it into an eye-popping spectacle that is full of sensory overload.The transportation to another world occurs even before the show begins, as you enter the <a href="/theatres/al-hirschfeld-theatre">Al Hirschfeld Theatre</a>, beguilingly transformed into the spectacular nightclub of the title. The Moulin Rouge's famous external windmill turns stage right; a giant blue elephant (which contains Santine's rooftop dressing room) is stage left. Dancers perform languorous cage dance routines and prowl the stage long before the lights dim and the club's MC and owner Harold Zidler (the buoyant and brilliant <a href="/actor-profile/danny-burstein">Danny Burstein</a>) set the stage show off.But as with Kander and Ebb's 1966 Broadway musical Cabaret, the vividly-recreated floorshow is only a backdrop to a more personal story of a desperate, ill-fated love affair that unfolds in its anchoring shadows. Wayne Alphonso Brady&nbsp;was born June 2, 1972 in Columbus, Georgia and is primarily known as a comedian and Emmy Award-winning TV personality in the United States, appearing regularly on the improvisational comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway?&nbsp;and as the host of Let's Make a Deal,&nbsp;Don't Forget the Lyrics!&nbsp;and The Wayne Brady Show.

Mr. Brady moved to Orlando, Florida, as a young child and attended Dr. Phillips High School. After graduating in 1989, he enrolled at the University of Miami. He began his career&nbsp;at the Orlando improv troupe SAK Comedy Lab and performed in community theaters, and he finally moved to Los Angeles in 1996. His big break came after appearing in the original UK version of Whose Line Is It Anyway?&nbsp;in 1998 which led to him becoming a regular on the US version from 1998 until 2007. Brady won an&nbsp;Emmy Award in 2003 for his efforts, following Emmy nominations in 2002 and 2001.&nbsp;The series was relaunched in 2013.

The next milestone in his career was&nbsp;The Wayne Brady Show,&nbsp;which ran from&nbsp;2001 until 2004, resulting in him&nbsp;picking&nbsp;up two Daytime Emmy Awards in the category of Outstanding Talk Show Host&nbsp;in 2003 and 2004.

In September 2004, Brady made his Broadway debut as Billy Flynn in the long-running hit musical&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;for a limited engagement through December 2004.

From 2007 through to 2009, he hosted&nbsp;the singing game show Don't Forget the Lyrics!&nbsp;on Fox and went on to become the host of Let's Make a Deal&nbsp;on CBS from October 2009, a job he still holds. He has received&nbsp;a total of seven Daytime Emmy Award nominations to date in the category of Outstanding Game Show Host for his work.

In August 2010, he would return to the stage to play Tom Collins in&nbsp;Rent&nbsp;at the Hollywood Bowl, directed by Neil Patrick Harris. He returned to Broadway from&nbsp;November 21, 2015 through to&nbsp;March 27, 2016 to assume the role of Lola in&nbsp;Kinky Boots&nbsp;and would appear for one night only in the off-Broadway production of&nbsp;White Rabbit, Red Rabbit&nbsp;at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/westside-theatre">Westside Theatre</a> in 2016. Later that year he took on the role of&nbsp;Charley Kringas in a Los Angeles production of Stephen Sondheim's&nbsp;Merrily We Roll Along, and from January 17 through to April 9, 2017, he assumed the role of Aaron Burr in the Chicago production of&nbsp;Hamilton.

Over the course of his career, Brady has guest starred in or lent his voice to&nbsp;a plethora of television shows and films, most notably Sofia the First,&nbsp;Foodfight!,&nbsp;How I Met Your Mother,&nbsp;30 Rock,&nbsp;Stargate SG-1,&nbsp;Robot Chicken,&nbsp;Getting Along Famously,&nbsp;and Everybody Hates Chris.

Al Hirschfeld Theatre

The Al Hirschfeld Theatre first opened with a production of *Madame Pompadour* on November 11, 1924. The venue was originally named the Martin Beck Theatre after its proprietor, the vaudeville promoter Martin Beck. The venue was the only theatre in New York at that time to be wholly owned, with no mortgage requirements. 

The building was designed by G. Albert Lansburgh and only changed its name to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on June 21, 2003 in honour of the late Broadway caricaturist, who had died in January of that year. The theatre's current owner and operator, Jujamcyn Theatres, purchased the venue from the Beck family in 1965.

Subway travelers can get to the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, located on the corner of 45th Street and Eighth Avenue, by taking the A, C, or E line to the 42nd Street - Port Authority station.
