With Lunar New Year, Mardi Gras, and Black History Month events taking place, there is no shortage of ways to celebrate this month. Whether exploring a special exhibition, like the tribute to Black performers and creatives on Broadway at the Museum of Broadway, or eating some delicious food at the Mardi Gras celebration in East Midtown, these are the best things to do in NYC right now.

Lincoln Center Lunar New Year Celebration

Date and venue: February 22 at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall

Lincoln Center's free, family-friendly Lunar New Year event will be held February 22 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Take part in special programming, such as a K-pop dance performance, a Chinese opera showcase, and a lion dance by the Tai Look Lion Dance Company. There will also be craft stations for kids available throughout the day, as well as food vendors so you can enjoy a delicious bite while ringing in the Year of the Horse.

Celebrate the Year of the Horse at Hudson Yards

Date and venue: February 4 to 22 at Hudson Yards

Representing rapid change, momentum, and growth, the Year of the Horse is here, and there are many ways to usher it in across NYC. Hudson Yards is holding a Lunar New Year celebration through most of February, with live performances and workshops. See traditional lion dance, Dunhuang Dance (silk ribbon), and Shaolin Kung Fu performances at select times on February 7 and 21, or take part in a lantern-making workshop on February 4 and 11.

Museum of Broadway Black History Month and So in Love… With Broadway exhibits

Date and venue: Now through March 1 at the Museum of Broadway

For the month of February, the Museum of Broadway is showcasing dozens of real stage-worn costumes of iconic Black performers. See items like Denzel Washington's Marcus Brutus costume from Julius Caesar and Cynthia Erivo’s Celie costume from The Color Purple, on display on the museum’s second floor.

Plus, the museum is hosting other events such as a conversation and book signing with Jennifer Jones, the first Black Radio City Rockette, and a moderated panel about the Black Broadway talent boom of 1976.

Also at the Museum of Broadway this month is the So in Love… With Broadway exhibit, bringing together some of the greatest stage duos of all time, from Romeo and Juliet to Elphaba and Glinda. Celebrating romantic love, forbidden love, platonic love, and everything in between, this new exhibit is sure to dazzle any theatre lover.

The Orchid Show: Mr. Flower Fantastic's Concrete Jungle

Date and venue: Now through April 26 at New York Botanical Garden

Now that the Holiday Train Show is over at the New York Botanical Garden, it’s time for the next highly-anticipated exhibit: the Orchid Show. This year, NYBG’s theme is Mr. Flower Fantastic’s Concrete Jungle, using stunning orchids to recreate New York City, from subway stations to slice shops.

Mr. Flower Fantastic is a popular flower artist known for blending florals and street style, so there’s possibly no person better equipped to turn NYC into a flower-filled extravaganza. It’s easy to get to from the Theatre District — just a subway or Metro North ride from Grand Central.

Mardi Gras in East Midtown

Date and venue: Now through February 22 at various locations

Although the last day of Mardi Gras was technically February 17, there’s still plenty of time to party. Mardi Gras in East Midtown is a food and drink event with 10 restaurants and bars offering special menu items and cocktails throughout the multi-day event, so you can sip on a Sazerac, dig into jambalaya, and polish everything off with a king cake. Bryant Park Winter Village

Date and venue: Now through March 1 at Bryant Park

An NYC winter must-do is a visit to the Bryant Park Winter Village. Ice skate with free admission (skate and locker rental fees apply), glide on the ice in bumper cars, and hit up the Lodge, with drinks and bites available to complete your cold-weather outing. Just a short walk from the Theatre District, it’s the perfect place to hang out before or after a show.

Date and venue: February 6 to 26 at Bryant Park Winter Village

The Winter Olympics kick off February 6, so get a taste of the action by taking part in outdoor curling in Bryant Park. Only available for a fee in previous years, the curling lanes are completely free to the public this year. Grab a few friends and see what it takes to perfectly glide the sliding stones down the lane.

Mamma Mia! brunch

Date and venue: Sundays through March 22 at Ellen’s Stardust Diner

Mamma mia, here we go again — to brunch! The famous Ellen’s Stardust Diner, featuring singing waitstaff, is kicking off a ticketed brunch event inspired by the hit musical. With themed dishes liked “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme Chicken + Waffles” and “Chiquitita Chilaquilies,” you can turn your day into a Mamma Mia! celebration by seeing the show at the Winter Garden Theatre next door afterward. Tickets to the brunch are available online.

Chan Chan Taco at Oyamel

Date and venue: Through February 28 at Oyamel

José Andrés, celebrity chef and founder of One World Kitchen, is kicking off the year with a special dish honoring Cuba and the Broadway musical Buena Vista Social Club. The Chan Chan Taco, available for a limited time at his Hudson Yards restaurant, Oyamel, is named after the famous song from the Buena Vista Social Club album.

The taco is inspired by ropa vieja, a Cuban slow-braised beef dish, and also features arroz con habichuelas and a creamy plantain crema. It’s part of a greater taco series Andrés is launching throughout the year, so keep your eye out for new menu items.

Wollman Rink in Central Park

Date and venue: Now through March 2026 in Central Park

A slightly cheaper alternative to the Rockefeller ice rink, Central Park’s iconic Wollman Rink, lets you escape the concrete for a bit and skate amid nature. It's open daily through March, and it’s encouraged to book tickets in advance online as it can get busy during popular times. Once you’re on the ice, however, you can skate for as long as you’d like.

Life of Pi stage play screening

Date and venue: February 21 at Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre at Symphony Space

A one-night-only Life of Pi screening brings the London stage production of this famous novel to New York City. The Olivier Award-winning play, adapted from the book and Ang Lee's feature film, was praised for its immersive and life-like puppetry, telling the story of a boy who finds himself trapped on a boat with a ferocious tiger.

Flamenco Festival

Date and venue: February 26 to March 8 at various venues

The two-week-long Flamenco Festival returns to New York City for its 25th year, bringing together major names and rising stars to watch in this traditional Spanish dance style for unforgettable live performances. Tickets are available for individual performances at various venues, including New York City Center, Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater, the Town Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and more. Hate Radio

Date and venue: Now through February 28 at St. Ann’s Warehouse

Digging into the Rwandan RTLM hate-media radio station broadcasts that fueled a genocide, the powerful play Hate Radio investigates how easily propoganda can turn into violent action. This chilling play uses headphones for audiences to hear the broadcasts, and it’s performed in French and Kinyarwanda with English captions.

Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival

Date and venue: Through March 21 at New York City Center

Since 2023, the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival has celebrated contemporary dance with performances and workshops. This year, the festival is back, with the Lyon Opera Ballet kicking it off, which blends two different choreographies with technological elements like projected imagery. Caribbean Crossroads: Carlos Henriquez and Obed Calvaire

Date and venue: February 27-28 at the Rose Theater, Jazz at Lincoln Center

Enjoy a two-night performance from bassist Carlos Henriquez and percussionist Obed Calvaire, who will bring an inspiring night of Afro-Caribbean beats to Jazz at Lincoln Center this month. Not only can you see these two talented musicians perform together, but you can also arrive early and hear a free pre-concert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Varis Leichtman Studio. Then, after, hear a steel drum performance both before the show and at intermission.

Visit the MoMA PS1 for free

Date and venue: Now through 2028 at MoMA PS1

For the first time, all visitors, not just New Yorkers, can go to the MoMA PS1 for free. Just a short 7 train ride from Times Square, the Queens art museum, an offshoot of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Midtown, highlights rotating exhibits throughout the year.
