Award-winning play ‘Here There Are Blueberries’ to open on Broadway this fall

Previously seen off Broadway in 2024, the Pulitzer Prize finalist from the company behind The Laramie Project will now play the Barrymore Theatre starting in November.

The Pulitzer Prize-nominated play Here There Are Blueberries will make its Broadway debut this fall, playing a limited run at the Barrymore Theatre starting November 2. Opening night is November 9.

Here There Are Blueberries is based on a true story from 2007, when a Holocaust memorial museum received a Nazi-era photo album that revealed disturbing truths and caused a national debate over whether to display the materials.

The play was written by Moisés Kaufman, who also directs, and Amanda Gronich for Kaufman’s Tectonic Theater Project. Like the award-winning company's most famous piece, The Laramie Project, Blueberries is a docudrama whose script is assembled from verbatim transcripts of interviews with the real museum employees and others involved.

“For Tectonic Theater Project, bringing Here There Are Blueberries to Broadway is the culmination of a remarkable journey," Kaufman and Tectonic executive director Matt Joslyn said in a statement. "These photographs hold a mirror up to our humanity in the most intimate and unsettling way. We have to look at them—not to understand the people in the pictures, but to better understand ourselves.”

“We are thrilled to bring this extraordinary new play to the Barrymore Theatre,” said producers Brian and Dayna Lee in a statement. “This is a story rooted in history, but it is not a story safely confined to the past. At a moment when history itself is increasingly denied, distorted, or erased, Here There Are Blueberries reveals how ordinary people become complicit, and why remembering history is a vital responsibility.”

Here There Are Blueberries had previous productions at Miami New Drama in 2018, the La Jolla Playhouse in 2022, and Off-Broadway’s New York Theatre Workshop in 2024. That same year, the show was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist and won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play.

Casting for Here There Are Blueberries on Broadway has yet to be announced. The Off-Broadway cast included Scott Barrow, Nemuna Ceesay, Kathleen Chalfant, Noah Keyishian, Jonathan Raviv, Erika Rose, Anna Shafer, Elizabeth Stahlmann, Charlie Thurston, and Grant Varjas.

The Broadway production will have scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by David Lander, sound design by Bobby McElver, projection design by David Bengali, casting by Stephanie Yankwitt, and dramaturgy by Amy Marie Seidel.

Here There Are Blueberries is a co-production with La Jolla Playhouse.
