Aly Michalka, Spencer Sutherland to join '& Juliet' Broadway cast

Both actors will make their Broadway debuts in the hit pop musical at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre for limited runs this fall.

This is larger-than-life news: Aly Michalka and Spencer Sutherland will make their Broadway debuts in & Juliet this fall at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Michalka (Aly & AJ, Phil of the Future) will play Anne Hathaway starting November 3, and singer Sutherland (The X Factor, I Know What You Did Last Summer) will play Romeo from September 15.

They will replace current cast members Alison Luff as Anne and Ben Jackson Walker as Romeo.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the company of & Juliet as Anne Hathaway,” Michalka said in a statement. “I’ve spent so much of my life performing and telling stories through music, film, and television, and the opportunity to bring that experience to a Broadway stage while challenging myself in a new way is incredibly exciting. I’m so grateful to be welcomed into this extraordinary company, and I hope you’ll come see us on Broadway this winter!”

"Stepping onto the biggest stage as Romeo is more than a dream come true, it’s a moment that I will carry with me for the rest of my life,” said Sutherland in a statement. “A Broadway debut only happens once, and this is very much a ‘pinch me’ moment. In the greatest city in the world!"

Also joining the & Juliet cast September 15 are the previously announced Dance Moms TV star Kenzie Ziegler as Charmion (through November 1) and singer Anthony Gargiula (Counter-Melodies on social media) as François. Additionally, Jeannette Bayardelle will return to the production as Angelique from September 15 to October 4, and original Broadway company member Megan Kane will return to the production from September 7 to January 3 while Elsa Keefe takes a leave of absence.

The current & Juliet cast also includes Gianna Harris as Juliet, Chrissy Metz as Angelique (through September 13), Michael Iván Carrier as May, Corey Mach as Shakespeare (through October 4), and Joey Fatone and Paulo Szot alternating as Lance through November 1.

& Juliet starts at the end of Shakespeare's classic tragedy — with a twist. Juliet decides not to die when Romeo does, instead seeking out a second chance at life and love. The musical is set to 30 pop hits from the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, Kelly Clarkson, Bon Jovi, and more.
