It’s your last chance to hear the rhythm of Cuba on Broadway: The musical Buena Vista Social Club will play its final performance at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on January 17. At the time of closing, the show will have played 767 total performances.

Buena Vista Social Club features the songs of the same-named Cuban music group and their globally influential self-titled album, which won a 1998 Grammy Award and inspired a Wim Wenders documentary the following year. The Broadway musical takes theatrical liberties with the ensemble’s history, jumping back and forth between the 1950s — when the group members were young, rising musicians before the Cuban Revolution upended their careers — and the 1990s, when they reunited to record their landmark record.

Written by Marco Ramirez and directed by Saheem Ali, the show premiered off Broadway in 2023 and transferred to Broadway in 2025, earning critical acclaim both times. “In a spirited 2 hours, Buena Vista Social Club celebrates a rich slice of Cuban music and cultural heritage,” New York Theatre Guide’s critic wrote.

The Broadway production won a Grammy Award and five Tony Awards: Best Featured Actress (for Natalie Venetia Belcon), Best Choreography (for Justin Peck and Patricia Delgado), Best Sound Design (for Jonathan Deans), Best Orchestrations (for Marco Paguia), and a Special Tony Award for the onstage band directed by Paguia. It also made history as the first Broadway musical with a score sung entirely in Spanish.

The current Buena Vista Social Club Broadway cast includes Gina Torres as Omara (with Belcon returning December 1), José "Candelita" Iglesias as the Narrator (through November 15), Rick Negron as Compay, Mel Semé as Ibrahim, Jainardo Batista Sterling as Rubén, Isa Antonetti as Young Omara, Da’von Moody as Young Compay, Wesley Wray as Young Ibrahim, Jesús Pupo as Young Rubén, Renesito Avich as Eliades, Tanairi Sade Vazquez as Young Haydee (with Ashley De La Rosa returning November 16), and Chris Myers as Juan de Marcos.

Additionally, Yankees veteran Bernie Williams currently plays with the onstage band through November 29, and Xolo Maridueña joins as Juan de Marcos on November 17.

This weekend, Buena Vista Social Club will simultaneously play in four cities: New York; Dallas, Texas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Mexico City. The show also plans to open in London in 2027. Lead producer Orin Wolf also hinted at a future film version, saying in a statement, "We are thrilled the Broadway production is on schedule to recoup [its investment] as we look ahead to an exciting tour, special engagements in Mexico and Puerto Rico, the film and so much more."
