- Maya Rudolph makes her Broadway debut as Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh Mary! from April 28 to June 20
Oh, Maya! Maya Rudolph will make her Broadway debut in Oh, Mary! this spring, stepping into the title role of the play at the Lyceum Theatre from April 28 to June 20.
Rudolph is best known for her seven-year tenure as a Saturday Night Live cast member; she later won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Kamala Harris as a guest performer on the show. Rudolph won four additional Emmys for her voice performance on the animated series Big Mouth and was nominated for her performances in The Good Place, Loot, and Baking It. Rudolph is also known for playing supporting roles in comedy films like 50 First Dates, Grown Ups, and Bridesmaids.
She will step into the title role of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary!, replacing current star John Cameron Mitchell, who will extend for two weeks and now departs the show on April 26. The current Broadway cast also includes Simu Liu as Mary’s Teacher (through April 21), John-Andrew Morrison as Mary’s Husband, Jenn Harris as Mary's Chaperone, and Tony Macht as Mary's Husband's Assistant.
Written and directed by Tony Award winners Cole Escola and Sam Pinkleton, respectively, Oh, Mary! is a comedy play set in the weeks before Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, during which a repressed and alcoholic Mary is set on pursuing one desire: to be a cabaret star. Rudolph joins a roster of other celebrities — including Escola, Tituss Burgess, Betty Gilpin, Jinkx Monsoon, and Jane Krakowski — to play the role on Broadway.
“Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of being Cole Escola,” said Rudolph in a statement. “Oh, Mary! is the funniest play I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of plays, you’d be surprised. It’s such an honor to play the role of Mary, especially after so many iconic Marys have come before me. So making my Broadway debut in the role of a lifetime — as a miserable, suffocated, alcoholic woman — is a real dream come true.”
