Since its television debut in 1975, Saturday Night Live has been a mainstay in many American households, whether you remember tuning in for the first season or sneaking downstairs when your parents would watch it late at night. It launched the careers of some of the greatest names in comedy today, like Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Martin Short, Eddie Murphy, and so many others — and many of those stars have also gone on to make their Broadway debuts.

Whether they led a one-person play, appeared in an all-out Broadway musical, or led a show's creative team behind the scenes, these SNL stars have showcased an impressive range of talent, with some even earning Tony Awards and nominations for their Broadway work.

Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels was an executive producer on the Apple TV+ show Schmigadoon!, so it's no wonder the cast included a bunch of SNL alums. When the series got adapted for Broadway, Michaels also produced the stage show, winning him his first Tony Award for Best Musical.

He previously won a Best Play Tony for producing Leopoldstadt and has backed numerous other shows featuring SNL stars, like Simon Rich's All Out: Comedy About Love and All In: Comedy About Ambition, Tina Fey's Mean Girls musical, and solo shows by Gilda Radner and Colin Quinn.

Ana Gasteyer

With stage roles that range from Elphaba to Fanny Brice, Ana Gasteyer is no stranger to Broadway. Her breakthrough came as an SNL cast member in 1996, where she stayed on for six seasons, with some of her most famous characters including the NPR host Margaret Jo McCullen, as well as doing hilarious impressions of Martha Stewart and Celine Dion.

It was after SNL that Gasteyer turned to the stage, playing Columbia in The Rocky Horror Show in 2000 and originating Elphaba in a Chicago production of Wicked in 2005, later reprising the role on Broadway. She’s also starred in Once Upon a Mattress, Threepenny Opera, and more. In 2026, she earning her first Tony nomination for originating the role of preacher's wife Mildred Layton in Schmigadoon!

Rachel Dratch

While you might know the comedian for her SNL characters like Debbie Downer and a litany of iconic impersonations, Rachel Dratch has also been racking up theatre credits. In 2022, Dratch made her Broadway debut in POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive, and she now plays the Narrator in The Rocky Horror Show, earning Best Featured Actress Tony nominations both times.

Maya Rudolph

In her seven years at SNL, Maya Rudolph created characters like Jodi Deitz, host of the fictional show “Bronx Beat,” and did spot-on impersonations of people like Kamala Harris, Beyoncé, and Oprah Winfrey. After starring in numerous movies and TV shows, she made her Broadway debut in Oh, Mary! as Mary Todd Lincoln in 2026.

Laraine Newman

A trailblazing comic who appeared in the original cast of SNL, Laraine Newman was on the show from 1975 to 1980. The same year as her SNL departure, Newman made her Broadway debut in Fifth of July, and she returns in Celebrity Autobiography.

Kenan Thompson

Laurie Metcalf

Laurie Metcalf had the shortest tenure on SNL, appearing as a cast member for just one episode in 1981. The four-time Emmy and three-time Tony Award-winning actress has starred in plays like A Doll’s House, Part 2, Three Tall Women, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and more. She is also one of only two performers, along with Kara Young, to be Tony-nominated in four consecutive years.

Metcalf's latest Tony-winning performance came in 2026 as Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman, opposite Nathan Lane.

Michael McKean

Michael McKean was an SNL cast member from 1994-95, though he's best known for roles in comedy movies like Spinal Tap and Best in Show. Before SNL, however, McKean made his Broadway debut in Accomplice in 1990. He'd go on to star in numerous other Broadway plays and musicals, including Hair, Hairspray, The Pajama Game, All the Way, and the 2025 revival of Glengarry Glen Ross. In 2026, he plays the House Un-American Activities Committee chairman in Are You Now or Have You Ever Been off Broadway.

Michael McKean

Billy Crystal

Billy Crystal became a cast member on SNL after hosting the show, and he was on from 1984-85. In addition to Crystal’s storied career in film, he has also created and starred in Broadway shows, making his debut with his one-man show, 700 Sundays, in 2004, which also earned him a Tony Award. Additionally, he wrote and starred in the Broadway musical Mr. Saturday Night in 2022, based on his film of the same name. In 2026, Crystal returns to Broadway with his latest one-man show, 860.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is now synonymous with Seinfeld and Veep, but she got her breakthrough on SNL, where she was a cast member from 1982-85. She makes her Broadway debut in a 2026 revival of the Tony-winning play Other Desert Cities.

Tina Fey

Tina Fey made a fetch Broadway debut when she adapted her Mean Girls screenplay for the stage, winning the 2018 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical. She later stepped into the spotlight as a guest performer in the hip-hop improv show Freestyle Love Supreme for one night only.

Cecily Strong joined the SNL cast in 2012 and became the longest-tenured female actress on the show when she left after her 11th season in 2022.

In 2018, Strong made her Broadway debut in Celebrity Autobiography and appeared again in 2025’s All Out: Comedy About Ambition. She has also starred in Off-Broadway plays, including The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, What Happened Was..., and Brooklyn Laundry. In between her stage performances, Strong also starred in the Apple TV+ musical comedy Schmigadoon!, which inspired the Tony-winning Broadway musical.

With two of the biggest sketch comedy shows under his belt, MADtv and SNL, Taran Killam is a big name in the comedy world. But in 2017, he showed off his singing skills when he made his Broadway debut as King George III in Hamilton. later going on to play Lancelot in the Spamalot revival.

Another 10-season SNL veteran is Aidy Bryant, the Shrill sitcom star who made her Broadway debut in All In: Comedy About Love.

Fred Armisen, of Portlandia fame, was also notably on SNL from 2002 to 2013. In 2025, the prolific comedy and voice actor made his Broadway debut in All In: Comedy About Love, and he also starred in season 1 of the musical TV series Schmigadoon!

Late-night host Jimmy Fallon got his start on SNL in 1998, spending six years as a cast member and famously hosting "Weekend Update" alongside Tina Fey. Despite his love of music and singing on his show, Fallon didn’t make his Broadway debut until 2025 in All In: Comedy About Love.

Before departing SNL in 2025 after season 50, Heidi Gardner was a cast member for eight seasons, with a roster of recurring characters under her belt. Gardner made her Broadway debut in 2025 in All Out: Comedy About Ambition, and she also played Brooke Ashton in a 2019 production of Noises Off at The Cape Playhouse in Massachusetts.

Alex Moffat

As a cast member for six years, Alex Moffat delivered a long list of notable impersonations at SNL. After leaving the show, he made his Broadway debut in 2023 as Clarke in The Cottage. He then went on to perform in the Off-Broadway musicals The Big Gay Jamboree and Bigfoot! The Musical. He was also a producer of Gutenberg! The Musical! on Broadway in 2023.

Martin Short

Martin Short joined SNL as a cast member in 1984, creating numerous original characters. In addition to Short’s long list of film and television credits, he also has had an extensive stage career. He made his Broadway debut in 1993’s The Goodbye Girl and later starred in the 1999 Broadway revival of Little Me, for which he won a Tony Award. Then, in 2006, he created and performed in the one-man show Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me. He returned in 2014 to perform in It's Only a Play.

Iron Man himself joined the SNL cast in 1985 for one season. In other non-Marvel ventures, the Oscar winner made his Broadway debut in the 2024 play McNeal.

Molly Shannon

During her 1995-2001 stint on SNL, Molly Shannon created her famous character Mary Katherine Gallagher, alongside many others. In addition to numerous film and television roles, Shannon made her Broadway debut in 2011 in the musical Promises, Promises, and she appears in Celebrity Autobiography in 2026.

Will Ferrell

Perhaps best known as Buddy the Elf and Ron Burgundy, Will Ferrell got his start on SNL in 1995 and stayed as a cast member until 2002. Ferrell added Broadway actor to his wide-ranging film and television resume when he wrote and starred in the 2009 play You're Welcome America. A Final Night with George W. Bush.

Another original SNL cast member and groundbreaking female comic, Gilda Radner was on the show from 1975-80. In 1979, Radner made her Broadway debut in her one-woman show, Gilda Radner – Live from New York.

Jane Curtin

Jane Curtain was also one of the iconic original SNL cast members, performing through 1980. After SNL, she made her Broadway debut in the 1981 revival of the play Candida, and later stage credits include Love Letters, Noises Off, and Our Town.

Ben Stiller

Before he was Derek Zoolander, Ben Stiller was briefly on SNL in 1989 as a writer and actor. Lesser-known amid his many career achievements is his Broadway debut in 1986 in the play The House of Blue Leaves, whose revival he later led in 2011.

Chris Rock

Famous comedian Chris Rock started his career on SNL from 1990-93. While Rock has been in dozens of movies and television shows, he has also been on Broadway, making his debut in The Motherfucker with the Hat in 2011.

Janeane Garofalo

After breaking out on The Ben Stiller Show, Janeane Garofalo joined SNL in 1994 and stayed for a six-month stint before moving on to pursue other television roles. In 2017, Garofalo made her Broadway debut in the revival of Marvin’s Room.

Christine Ebersole

Before becoming an SNL cast member from 1981-82, Christine Ebersole made her Broadway debut in the play Angel Street in 1975. She would appear in several other Broadway shows before her SNL debut, including On the Twentieth Century and Oklahoma! Other notable Broadway credits include originating the roles of M'Lynn in Steel Magnolias in 2005 and Little Edie Beale/Edith Bouvier Beale in the 2006 production of Grey Gardens, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Garrett Morris

Original SNL cast member Garrett Morris appeared on the show from 1975-80. As a singer who went to Juilliard, Morris would sometimes sing classical music on SNL, so it’s no surprise his theatrical talents also lent themselves to Broadway. He made his debut in Hallelujah, Baby! in 1967 and starred in several other productions, including 1968’s I'm Solomon and 1971’s Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death.

Jim Belushi made his name on SNLfrom 1983-85. The comedian actually made his Broadway debut before starring on SNL, playing the Pirate King in the 1981 revival of The Pirates of Penzance. Later Broadway credits include Conversations with My Father and Born Yesterday.

Jenny Slate

Jenny Slate was a cast member for one season of SNL between 2009 and 2010, in addition to her stand-up career and many film and television roles. In 2025, she made her Broadway debut in All Out: Comedy About Ambition.

Beck Bennett

Beck Bennett was an SNL member for eight seasons between 2013-21. He made his Broadway debut in All Out: Comedy About Ambition.

Denny Dillon

Denny Dillon, an SNL cast member for the 1980-81 season, started her career on stage, making her Broadway debut in the 1974 revival of Gypsy as Agnes. In the 1980s, she starred in The Skin of Our Teeth, Harold and Maude, and My One and Only. In 2003, she returned to Broadway in Enchanted April.

George Coe

George Coe became an original cast member of SNL after making his Broadway debut in the 1964 play What Makes Sammy Run? and originating the role of M. Lindsay Woolsey in Mame in 1966. He was also in the original production of the musical Company in 1970 as David, a role he reprised in 1993.

An SNL cast member from 1990-94, Julia Sweeney wrote and starred in the Broadway solo play God Said "Ha!", nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo/One-Person Show.

Colin Quinn

Colin Quinn was an SNL cast member from 1995 to 2000, particularly known for his time as a "Weekend Update" anchor. He made his Broadway debut in his 1998 one-man show, Colin Quinn: An Irish Wake, and returned with another solo show, Long Story Short, in 2010. He has also performed numerous other solo comedy shows off Broadway.

Jon Lovitz, who was on SNL from 1985-90, made his Broadway debut in the play The Dinner Party.
