Everything you need to know about ‘Downstate’ on Broadway

In downstate Illinois, four men convicted of sex crimes against minors live together in a group home. The house’s closely watched, delicately balanced order collapses when one of the men's victims, now an adult, arrives to confront his abuser.

Beginning October 17, Downstate plays at the Booth Theatre, located at 222 W 45nd St. between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. The venue opened in 1913 and was named for actor Edwin Booth, the brother of notorious assassin John Wilkes Booth.

Plays and musicals that have run recently at the theatre include Proof, Little Bear Ridge Road, John Proctor Is the Villain, The Roommate, and Kimberly Akimbo.

Downstate runs approximately 2.5 hours, including an intermission. This is the same runtime as the show's Off-Broadway, Chicago, and London productions.

Downstate is restricted to audiences aged 17 and up due to themes of child sex abuse.

Downstate is expected to play a standard Broadway schedule of eight performances a week between Tuesday and Sunday, with two performances on Wednesdays and Saturdays and no performances on Mondays. The schedule is subject to one-off changes.

Downstate made its world premiere in 2018 with Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. A year later, it debuted in London at the National Theatre, and in 2022, it debuted off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons. The play debuts at Broadway's Booth Theatre on October 17, 2026.

Bruce Norris wrote Downstate. The American actor and playwright is best known for his play Clybourne Park, a sequel to Lorraine Hansberry’s classic A Raisin in the Sun, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 2011 and a Best Play Tony Award in 2012.

Known for provocative works exploring race, class, and American social hypocrisy, his other plays include The Pain and the Itch, The Qualms, and A Parallelogram. He has a long association with the Chicago-based Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where numerous plays of his premiered.

Norris’s Broadway acting credits include Wrong Mountain, An American Daughter, and Biloxi Blues.

The play follows four convicted sex offenders living in a restrictive group home after their release from prison, and the ensemble cast also includes other figures from the outside world.

• Fred: A mild-mannered piano teacher, now in his 70s, who molested two of his students.
• Andy: Fred’s former pupils, now married and in his 40s, who arrives for a confrontation.
• Em: Andy’s assertive wife.
• Dee: A wry former performer who had a two-year sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy.
• Ivy: The four offenders’ rigid parole officer.
• Felix: A soft-spoken Hispanic man who abused his preteen daughter.
• Gio: A slick guy in his 30s who calls his offense "statutory rape."
• Effie: Gio’s ditzy, and suspiciously young, girlfriend.

The Downstate Broadway cast includes returning players K. Todd Freeman and Francis Guinan alongside Al'Jaleel McGhee, Adrian Martinez, Liza Colón-Zayas, Thomas Sadoski, Cassie Beck, and Ivy Wolk.

Downstate has been honored with various prizes and nominations for its Chicago, London, and Off-Broadway productions. The Broadway production will be eligible for Tony Awards and other honors in 2027.

• Jeff Awards: The 2018 Chicago production won for Best Production – Play (Large), New Work – Play, and a supporting actor prize for K. Todd Freeman. Pam MacKinnon was nominated for direction.
• Evening Standard Awards: The 2019 London production was nominated for Best Play, Best Actor (Francis Guinan and Freeman), and Best Actress (Cecilia Noble).
• Obie Awards: In 2024, Bruce Norris, MacKinnon, and Freeman were honored, respectively, for playwriting, sustained achievement in directing, and sustained achievement in performance.
• Drama Desk Awards: In 2023, Guinan and Freeman were nominated for Outstanding Featured Performance in a Play.
• Outer Critics Circle Awards: Downstate was named Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play, and Freeman won Outstanding Featured Performer, besting Guinan and Glenn Davis. MacKinnon was nominated for direction.
• Lucille Lortel Awards: Freeman won for Outstanding Lead Performer in a Play. The show was nominated for Best Play along with Suzanna Guzmán and Eddie Torres for Outstanding Featured Performer in a Play.
• Drama League Awards: Downstate was nominated for Outstanding Production of a Play, and Freeman received a nod for Distinguished Performance.
• New York Drama Critics’ Circle: Downstate was named Best Play.

Downstate has had a number of high-profile stagings since its debut in Chicago.

• 2018: The world premiere, directed by Pam MacKinnon, runs from September 20 to November 18 at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, in a co-production with the U.K.’s National Theatre.
• 2019: The West End production, a transfer from Chicago to London, runs March 12 to April 27.
• 2022: The Off-Broadway debut, a transfer of MacKinnon's production, runs October 28, 2022 to January 7, 2023.
• 2026: The Broadway debut begins October 17 at the Booth Theatre.

Perhaps "fun" isn't the word for a weighty drama like Downstate, but you can learn more about the thought-provoking show and its creative team below.

• The title evokes both geography — "downstate" refers to Illinois areas outside Chicago — and a bleak state of mind. That fits.
• Is forgiveness possible, even in extreme circumstances? The play challenges audiences to consider that question without excusing the characters’ crimes.
• Norris tests the limits of the audience's open-mindedness in both direct and subtle ways. For example, he named the main character Fred, a mild-mannered elderly man but also one of the abusers, after the widely adored Fred Rogers.
• Norris was inspired by a real news story out of Joliet, Illinois, where local officials, wanting a halfway house for sex offenders out of the area, planned to build a playground nearby to force them to move.
• This spring, Mantello is also directing Small Mouth Sounds with Julia Roberts, Paul Rudd, Sarah Paulson, Martin Freeman, Greta Lee, and Isaac Powell.
• With his best-known play, Clybourne Park, Norris became the first playwright to win the Tony Award for Best Play, the Olivier Award for Best New Play, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
