July 2019 Highlights on Broadway and Beyond
Check out our guide to the biggest theatrical events of the month...
Alongside soaring temperatures, July traditionally brings with it a quieter month in the Big Apple, when it comes to live theatre. After June's raging storm that is The Tony Awards, the dust usually settles down for the summer in July... However, this year, Broadway is keeping the heat turned up as a host of stars descend upon the Great White Way this month! There's still plenty for theatre fans to be excited about...
But before we get to that, following the Tonys, we usually have to say a fond farewell to a number of Broadway productions and 2019 is no exception, so we'd like to take this opportunity to encourage you to catch the following shows before it's too late...
July 7 - The Tony Award-winning "Best Play" The Ferryman, currently starring three-time Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James, will play its final performance at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, before heading out on a National Tour during the 2020-2021 season. In addition, Manhattan Theatre Club's American premiere of Ink, featuring a Tony Award-winning performance by Bertie Carvel as Rupert Murdoch, will bow one final time at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, and Lincoln Center Theater's acclaimed revival of My Fair Lady, starring Tony Award winner Laura Benanti as Eliza Doolittle, comes to a close at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
July 21 - Samantha Barks and three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl say Goodbye to Rodeo Drive and play their final performances in Pretty Woman: The Musical at the Nederlander Theatre, whilst Shoshana Bean will be "Opening Up" for her last shift at the diner in hit musical Waitress at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
And may we also recommend heading downtown and catching Atlantic Theater Company's world premiere musical The Secret Life of Bees, before it plays its final Off-Broadway performance at the Linda Gross Theater on July 21.
So, what's new this month?...
The "Mindfreak" himself, Criss Angel, makes his Broadway debut as part of the 2019 In Residence on Broadway series, bringing Criss Angel Raw - The Mindfreak Unplugged to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre for a limited engagement from July 2 through July 7, 2019. Angel, who is perhaps best known for his "Mindfreak" television series on A&E Network and his widely acclaimed Las Vegas stage show, has been heralded as the most influential and imitated magician of the modern era. So, why not head down to the Lunt-Fontanne and find out what all the (mind)freaking fuss is all about?
Hot on the heels of one of today's greatest magicians comes one of today's greatest comedians... Dave Chappelle brings his unique brand of comedy and makes his Broadway debut in an extended Dave Chappelle on Broadway engagement at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre from July 9 through July 20, 2019, also part of the 2019 In Residence on Broadway series. The Emmy and Grammy Award winner promises irreverent social commentary on race, popular culture, sex, drugs, politics, and fame in this not-to-be-missed evening of laughter.
The doors to the Moulin Rouge will be opened to the New York critics as the much hyped Broadway premiere of Moulin Rouge! The Musical celebrates its official opening at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on July 25, 2019. With a stellar cast led by Aaron Tveit as Christian, Tony Award winner Karen Olivo as Satine, and six-time Tony Award nominee Danny Burstein as Harold Zidler, and music from the beloved 2001 Baz Luhrmann film (alongside the best pop songs released in the last 18 years since), this may well be the bona fide smash hit of the 2019-2020 Broadway season!
Moulin Rouge! The Musical Tickets are available now for performances through February 2, 2020.
July 26 is a big day on Broadway, firstly because it marks the return of two young, ubertalented actors to the Great White Way. Academy Award nominee (and current "Spide-Man: Far From Home" villain) Jake Gyllenhaal and Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge bring their lauded production of Sea Wall / A Life, which debuted at the Public Theater in February of this year, to Broadway's Hudson Theatre for a limited 9-week engagement. Comprised of two compelling monologues, both under the direction of Carrie Cracknell, this show is the unique opportunity to experience storytelling at its very best, delivered by two modern greats of the stage and screen.
Sea Wall / A Life Tickets are available now for performances from July 26 through September 29, 2019.
The second reason to mark July 26 down on your calendars is thanks to Grammy, Tony and Emmy Award-winning icon Barry Manilow, who returns to the Great White Way and concludes the 2019 In Residence on Broadway series at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Manilow Broadway promises an evening of "nonstop Top 40 Hits and surprises from his extensive catalog of music ranging from pop, to Broadway, Jazz, and adult contemporary" and is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Manilow fans everywhere! The limited engagement runs through August 17, 2019.
