Back in 2003, Denis O'Hare won a Tony Award for playing Mason Marzac in Richard Greenberg's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/take-me-out" target="_blank">Take Me&nbsp;Out</a>. For its Broadway revival at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/hayes-theater" target="_blank">Hayes Theater</a>, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/jesse-tyler-ferguson" target="_blank">Jesse Tyler Ferguson</a> is stepping up to the plate.When asked if following in O'Hare's footsteps made him nervous, Ferguson immediately gave an emphatic "Yes," a response I didn't expect from the seasoned actor. After all, between his 10+ years playing Mitchell Pritchett on ABC's&nbsp;Modern Family&nbsp;and his&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/news-features/jesse-tyler-ferguson-theatre-roles-we-love" target="_blank">25-year New York stage career</a>, he has his own stacked roster of honors: two Drama Desk Awards, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, and five Emmy nominations.But, of course, being the first new actor to take on an award-winning role on Broadway is a whole different ball game. Not to mention, his character is the only non-baseball player in a baseball play. Greenberg's drama follows a Major League Baseball center fielder, Darren Lemming (played by&nbsp;Grey's Anatomy&nbsp;star Jesse Williams), whose coming out as gay — and the backlash that follows — upsets his relationship with the sport. Ferguson's Mason is Darren's business manager, a comfortably out man who becomes a rabid baseball fan from nothing after meeting his new client.The show isn't truly about baseball, though, according to Ferguson. "It's really a play about relationships," he says. "Baseball is a backdrop for this play that's about so many other things."He would know: long before joining the revival, Ferguson saw the show's original Off-Broadway and Broadway premieres in the early aughts. And the themes it's really about — homophobia, manhood, passion — have stuck with him all that time and feel more relevant than ever. He chatted about that and more, and he's starring in this home run of a revival through June 11.<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/take-me-out" target="_blank">Get&nbsp;Take Me Out&nbsp;tickets now.</a>How does it feel to be back on Broadway after six years?I wish I could come back to Broadway more often. I've had the great honor of being able to fit in small runs of things during my hiatuses from&nbsp;Modern Family. But it's harder with Broadway scheduling; limited runs are few and far between. I'm just happy I was able to come back to New York as much as I was.The fact that I can be a part of this season celebrating Broadway's rebirth is just really profound and meaningful in a way that I wasn't quite expecting it to be. And you can definitely feel that amongst the community. It feels different than any other season I've had the pleasure of playing. It has its own sort of electric current.How much of a baseball fan are you?I've always appreciated it. But as far as following sports, I have other interests that pull me away from those things. But I am sort of living a parallel life to Mason in that I'm falling in love with the game of baseball very slowly. My exposure to it, rather than representing an out gay baseball player, is being able to speak these beautiful words by Richard Greenberg. That's been my "in" to the game.A few weeks ago, [the cast was] given a private tour of Yankee Stadium, and I was very excited to go, mostly to spend some time with my castmates outside of the rehearsal room. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but I certainly wasn't expecting to be as moved as I was.And when I found out that we could actually go onto the field and just be there with the entire empty stadium around us — there aren't words [for] what that felt like. It was just so profound, and it actually changed the way I did part of the play.Through this play, I've picked up at least the pageantry of the game and the pomp and circumstance of it all. I haven't picked up wild trivia or anything, and I certainly can't speak to it any more intelligently than I was able to a year ago, but I certainly have a much more profound and deep appreciation of the game.

How does&nbsp;Take Me Out&nbsp;resonate differently now than it did when it premiered?Unfortunately, it resonates very deeply and in many of the same ways it did back in 2002. There's no active Major League Baseball player who has come out of the closet. I think visibility is so important, and I applaud all these athletes who have chosen to be open about who they are. We have out athletes in football, in tennis, in soccer — there can always be more. But there haven't been any in Major League Baseball, and that's disheartening.We were meant to do this two years ago, and I think so much has changed in the world in those two years as well. There's a character, Shane Mungitt, who is incredibly racist and homophobic and says terrible, awful things, and uses ignorance as an excuse to be able to speak that way. [Two years ago] I was like, "Yeah, that's rough, but I just feel like people know better than to speak like that now." And then, here we are, and I just see that not much has changed, and people have been given voice in ways that they wouldn't have been given a few years ago.What was it like working with Jesse Williams?Every time [director] Scott Ellis would call for Jesse, we'd both answer. I'm now "JTF" in the rehearsal room; Jesse's "Jesse."It was really wonderful to get to know him as a person and work with him and see his process. He's someone who has not done a lot of theatre — this is his Broadway debut. I don't think he's been on stage since he was in college.I was just so taken aback by his ability to find a deep comfort level within this new landscape — rehearsing a play is so different than doing a TV show. We're here to really dissect the characters, and he was so game to do all of that. And he asked questions in the rehearsal room that I was just like, "Wow, he's a theatre guy! He's asking the right questions."In all of my scenes, Mason's either onstage speaking to the audience by himself, or he's with Darren. I really don't [interact] with any of the other characters. As much as I love Jesse as a humanitarian and as a person, and I think he's a wonderful actor — [I thought] "What is it going to be like to put this together with him?" It's exceeded my expectations in so many ways.

How would you describe Mason's importance to Darren's coming-out journey?Mason and Darren are these two ships passing in the night. Darren is at the top of his game and has made an announcement: He's come out of the closet, he's had a press conference about it, and he assumed that it wouldn't be a big deal. But there is a ripple effect, and that ripple effects shakes him. At the same time, Mason, who is Darren's new business manager, is falling in love with the game. While one person is figuring out if they're even in love with [it] still, the other person is falling harder and harder and harder.That's a very heartbreaking thing because they are people that need one another. Mason needs Darren because he's given him a new lease on life and has allowed him to be more fully himself. Mason's somewhat of a hermit; [now] he's emerging from his home more often. And Mason is cracking Darren's facade. He's a hard-shelled human being who has been hiding his truth for so long. And here is this very open person who's come into his life. He's a very joyful person, and he's joyful because of the game of baseball.Your character falls in love with baseball because he finally sees himself represented. Do you think audiences will feel represented in&nbsp;Take Me Out's characters?I saw this play originally at <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater" target="_blank">The Public Theater</a> 20 years ago, and then I saw it again when it transferred to Broadway. I remember being hesitant to go because I wasn't a huge baseball fan, and it was billed as a baseball play. [Then] Denis O'Hare stepped out, and I was like, "Oh, okay, that's my guy right there. Let's see what he has to say." And I fell in love with that performance and that character. I think that's one of the main reasons this works so brilliantly: It's really not a play about baseball. It's a play about relationships and masculinity and homophobia, but it's told through the lens of baseball.There's so many people who are seeing this play and experiencing it for the first time who felt the same way as I did. And there's been so much more written about the play — I think people will have a deeper understanding of [it] before they get into their seats. I do think that character resonates for so many people. It's so necessary to have that outsider there, and I'm honored that I get to play the character that meant so much to me 20 years ago.

Did you feel any pressure taking on Denis O'Hare's Tony-winning role?Yes. There's a shadow that his performance cast — an intimidating shadow over anyone who wants to play this part. There was a challenge for me to figure out, "Okay, well, what's my 'in'?" I don't remember what I ate for breakfast yesterday, but when I read the play for the first time, I would come across lines and remember the way Denis O'Hare said [them]. I realized that his performance was embedded in me. There are still moments in the play where I'm like, "How did he make that part work? I'm still trying to figure it out."Denis reached out to me when [casting] was first announced, and he gave me his blessing and was wildly supportive. I reached out to him the day after our opening just to say thank you again for bringing this beautiful character to life 20 years ago. So there's a mutual appreciation between the two of us, which I really value, but it is still very intimidating.So many people have come up to me that said, "I saw this originally done." And I just hope that my interpretation is something that they also see as valid. It certainly does not replace what Denis did, but I hope that it's serving the play in the correct way. I do think it is; I think we all are. That's the sign of a good revival, I guess. Ferguson plays Mason Marzac, the gay business manager of a newly out Major League Baseball player who falls in love with the sport.

There's something a little bit spooky about <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/beetlejuice" target="_blank">Beetlejuice</a>. Sure, the titular Ghost with the Most haunts the Maitlands' house with progressively grander hijinks. And of course, emo teenager Lydia leans into the undead of it all in the musical based on the iconic Tim Burton film. But things got a little eerie off stage as well, as set designer David Korins witnessed.Korins initially crafted the show's set for the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/winter-garden-theatre" target="_blank">Winter Garden Theatre</a>, where Beetlejuice opened in 2019. Now, the musical has moved to the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre" target="_blank">Marquis Theatre</a>, and as any designer will tell you, a new theatre requires adjustments to the set because no stage is the same size. And for a complicated, meticulously crafted design like Beetlejuice, which is full of special effects, even more so. But not this time."If you can believe it — and believe me, I couldn't believe it — the set transferred basically exactly perfect," Korins said. "We got so lucky. I have had the great fortune of doing almost 25 Broadway shows and nothing fits the way you wanted it to fit. It just doesn't. But this one fit."The Tony-nominated set designer has four shows running on Broadway. In addition to Beetlejuice, Korins also worked on <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/mrs-doubtfire" target="_blank">Mrs. Doubtfire</a>, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/dear-evan-hansen" target="_blank">Dear Evan Hansen</a>, and <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/hamilton" target="_blank">Hamilton</a>. But of all the shows he's worked on, Beetlejuice is by far the most complex, he said."I am so, so, so proud that thing exists in the world and that people get to see it, because they're not making theatre like this right now," Korins added, applauding director Alex Timbers for his masterful world creation. "This theatre is bold and powerful and muscular and risky and edgy and stylish and cool and big. I was like, 'Wow, this is a damn incredible thing to like look at.'"New York Theatre Guide chatted with Korins about what inspired his Beetlejuice design, the Tim Burton easter eggs, and why the set is practically a character in the show.<a href="https://ticket.newyorktheatreguide.com/booking/calendar?product_id=14894&amp;content_product_id=14894&amp;product_type=show&amp;performance_type=E&amp;venue_id=47124&amp;qt=2" target="_blank">Get Beetlejuice tickets on New York Theatre Guide.</a><h2>Tim Burton Easter egg hunt</h2>The first step for creating Beetlejuice was going back to the original auteur: Tim Burton. His iconic film was released in the 1980s, quickly developed a cult following, and laid the foundation for Burton's adventurous filmmaking to come. &nbsp;"The first thing that you have to do with putting a piece of [intellectual property] on stage is honor where we came from," Korins said. "In this case, we were able to honor Tim Burton as an illustrator and filmmaker and storyteller writ large."There are "tons" of Burton easter eggs throughout the set, and many of them are in the opening scene at Lydia's mom's funeral. Here are a few of the nods:<ul> <li>The names on the tombstones are characters from other Tim Burton movies.</li> <li>The hills are all sculpted in the style of the Claymation gravestones and the grave in The Nightmare Before Christmas.</li></ul>"My goal and [director] Alex Timbers's goal was to say, in the very first moment: You are in good hands. We are super fans. We're not going to do some crazy thing that you're not going to know where you are. You're going to be in good hands. We're going to guide you on this journey," Korins said.Korins describes the film as having a "homemade quality," and he wanted to capture that essence in the textures and design of the set."Every single piece of scenery is hand-treated, he said. "The wallpaper is hand-drawn... Every single floorboard is hand-painted. None of it is presenting the way that you think it would be... So there was the technical challenge and there was the artistic challenge."

<h2>The House is a character</h2>The set is an integral piece in every play and musical, but in Beetlejuice, the set is an active character."The physical structure of the house is a character that, first of all, kills the two main protagonists of the show," Korins said. "It kills them, so there had to be a death situation. And then it becomes the vessel for the entire show to happen within, both upstairs and downstairs. And we get to see the show, that home in three completely different transformed iterations, from the Maitlands to the Deetzes and then ultimately when it gets haunted by Beetlejuice."So how does one build three houses in one?"Well, I want to tell you theatre magic, and just shut up about it," Korins said, cheekily.However, he did share some secrets on how he achieved the "magic."<ul> <li>The structure of the house - floor, ceiling, and walls - remain the same, but the surfaces of the walls, railings, doors, light fixtures, etc. are all changed out. "It really is a whole new skin, every single thing," he said.</li> <li>There are three versions of every piece to accommodate all the versions of the house, and "a group of incredibly well-choreographed, totally game stage crew backstage schlepping the stuff on stage and putting it together live during the show."</li></ul><h2>Tricks up his sleeve</h2>Korins worked on Beetlejuice for six and a half years, and he started working with director Alex Timbers on the concept before there were even writers for the musical."The Beetlejuice set design is by far the most complicated set design by a magnitude of 10 that not only I've ever seen, that I've ever done," he said. "There isn't a piece of scenery that doesn't have a light in it, a special effect, a special trap door for puppetry, smoke, projection surface, speaker, automation, whatever it is. It is unbelievably complicated."With so many effects and tricks lodged in the Beetlejuice set, we asked Korins to share some of his favorites.<ul> <li>He loves the puppetry, especially when Beetlejuice is on the roof, and his limbs seemingly multiply with puppeted legs and arms. "Just how the puppets interact with him in that way is so delicious of fun and easy."</li> <li>The levitation tricks. "We have two levitation tricks — they happen in two different ways at two different parts of the stage... and one of them happens in full stage light, not even like tricky magic light."</li></ul>However, it's impossible to list all the ways in which the set creates magic for the show, and Korins relishes being able to use everything he's learned as a designer in the show."We have everything: a book falling from the ceiling that then picks up in the footlights, a trap in the floor that two people fall through," he said. "It really is like the kitchen sink of the design lexicon in every category."

<h2>Changes for the new space</h2>While the size of the set didn't have to change when the show moved to the Marquis Theatre, Korins did make some changes to the space, as Beetlejuice has an immersive feel to it.When you walk into the theatre, you immediately feel like you're in the world, and to achieve the vibe, Korins took his designs beyond the stage, blacking out most of the theatre with curtains, switching out the light fixtures with vintage chandeliers, and installing purple and green lightbulbs."We've created a really interesting atmosphere in the Marquis," he said. "We did a lot of work to make it our own and make it a new home."<h2>For the fans</h2>The Beetlejuice fans are unlike any other show's, Korins said, and in many ways, the fans kept the show alive, or rather, undead.Outside the Marquis Theatre, Shubert Alley is covered in fan art and illustrations, demonstrating the impact they've had on the show."This show, more than any I've ever been part of, was saved by the fans and was really elevated, kept alive, and then exalted by the fans' voracious love of it," Korins said. "This fan base is so fervent and incredible. I did Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen, which has some real fans. And this, I got to say the Beetlejuice fans are insane, in the best way. The Broadway designer talks about how he brought Tim Burton's world to life on stage.

<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/paradise-square" target="_blank">Paradise Square</a>&nbsp;is the second-most Tony nominated show this season (alongside&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/mj-the-musical" target="_blank">MJ The Musical</a>) with 10 nods. Led by Tony winner Joaquina Kalukango (who won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical),&nbsp;Paradise Square&nbsp;is based on true events from a part of New York history that not many Americans know about.&nbsp;The musical is set in 1863 during the Civil War, in Lower Manhattan's Five Points neighborhood. This real-life neighborhood used to house free Black Americans and Irish immigrants, who lived together, worked together, and married each other. Kalukango's character Nelly owns a saloon called Paradise Square, where most of the musical's action takes place.&nbsp;Paradise Square&nbsp;features music by Jason Howland, lyrics by Masi Asare and Nathan Tysen, and a book by Christina Anderson, Marcus Gardley, Larry Kirwan, and Craig Lucas. After seeing this stirring new musical, and being thoroughly moved by it and Kakulango's explosive performance, you'll want to learn more about the historical events that inspired&nbsp;Paradise Square. Here's what you should know.<a href="https://ticket.newyorktheatreguide.com/booking/calendar?product_id=23466&amp;content_product_id=23466&amp;product_type=show&amp;performance_type=M&amp;venue_id=47093&amp;qt=2" target="_blank">Get&nbsp;Paradise Square&nbsp;tickets now.</a><h2>Paradise Square's setting is real, even if the saloon is not.</h2>In&nbsp;Paradise Square, Kalukango's Nelly owns a saloon in the Five Points neighborhood, which was established in 1820 in lower Manhattan. It was called Five Points because the intersection at its center looked like a five-spoked wheel. There was also a public park called Paradise Square. The neighborhood was built over a filled-in freshwater lake. The buildings placed on top of it would sink and sag, and were notoriously damp, making it a breeding ground for diseases. Because of this bug in its design, housing in Five Points was cheap, making it a destination for new Irish immigrants and freed Black Americans.Paradise Square&nbsp;has two interracial marriages at its center. Nelly has a white husband, an Irish man named Willie (Matt Bogart). Her sister-in-law Annie (Chilina Kennedy) is married to a Black pastor named Samuel (Nathaniel Stampley). Although the particular characters in&nbsp;Paradise Square&nbsp;are fictional, their circumstances are based on real events.This was common in 19th-century New York. Though many states had anti-miscegenation laws, New York never had laws banning interracial marriage.&nbsp;<a href="https://paradisesquaremusical.com/_media/ParadiseSquareEducationGuide2022.pdf">Said producer Garth Drabinsky</a>, "Irish immigrants, who at the time were relegated to the lowest rung of American social and economic status, were welcomed by their Black American neighbors. These two communities not only coexisted, they lived together, loved each other, intermarried, raised families, and shared their cultures."<h2>Paradise Square&nbsp;shows how tap dance was created.</h2>In&nbsp;Paradise Square, the Irish characters and the Black characters share space in Nelly's saloon, drinking and dancing together. Bill T. Jones's choreography (which received a Tony nomination) showcases Irish step-dancing as well as African juba. Those styles then blend onstage to create tap dancing. No one in the musical remarks on that blending, but it is historically accurate.&nbsp;Tap dancing can be traced back to one man, William Henry Lane, also known as Master Juba. Born to freed African slaves, Lane lived in the Five Points neighborhood, where he would dance in the saloons and dance halls for food and coins. Even Mark Twain saw Lane dance in 1841 in the Five Points, calling him "the greatest dancer known." Lane would later be the one of the first Black performers to perform for white audiences, as part of minstrel shows.&nbsp;As part of his signature style, he combined the Irish step dancing that he saw in the saloon halls with African shuffle, walkaround, and juba. Many scholars and dancers credit Lane as the "father of tap dance."<h2>Paradise Square&nbsp;contains a real historical figure.</h2>Paradise Square&nbsp;is based on a 2012 musical by Kirwan called&nbsp;Hard Times, which was set in the Five Points neighborhood and featured the music of Stephen Foster. Foster was a 19th-century composer who wrote more than 200 songs, including "Oh! Susanna," "Camptown Races," and "My Old Kentucky Home." Foster also resided in Five Points in the last years of his life. He was an alcoholic who died from a fall at age 37. His music has been criticized following his death for idolizing the South and appropriating Black culture. Foster's songs borrow from Black stories and were used in blackface minstrel shows.Paradise Square&nbsp;has come a long way from&nbsp;Hard Times, but Foster is still a character in it; he's a pianist at Nelly's saloon. To find out how he figures into the plot and how his music is still a part of the score of&nbsp;Paradise Square, you will have to see the show for yourself.<h2>Paradise Square&nbsp;deals with an ugly event in history: the Draft Riots.</h2>Paradise Square&nbsp;dramatizes a historical event that affected Five Points: the Draft Riots of 1863 (which was also dramatized in the 2002 ​​Martin Scorsese film&nbsp;Gangs of New York). In 1863, at the height of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued a draft, where all male citizens between 20 and 35, and unmarried men between 35 and 45, could be called on to the front lines of the war. They could buy their way out of the draft by paying $300 ($5,800 in today's dollars), an impossible sum for the poor and working class. African-American men were exempted from the draft because they were not considered citizens.&nbsp;On July 13, 1863, angered by the draft, working white men and women began rioting, beginning in Lower Manhattan and then moving up the island. The riot would last for three days and would come to a halt with the arrival of 4,000 federal troops. The mob targeted Black businesses and Black residents. The Draft Riots caused millions of dollars in property damage and left 3,000 Black New Yorkers homeless. In total, 120 people were killed.After the Draft Riots, free Black men were allowed to form their own Civil War military regiment. Many Black residents of Manhattan also left the island, moving to Brooklyn and beyond. In 1860, there were 12,414 Black New Yorkers. By 1865, that number was 1,865.Paradise Square&nbsp;shows a racial mecca that is disrupted by violence, showing that progress is always at the risk of being undone. <h2>This&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;features a majority Black cast.</h2>In fact, it is the first Broadway production of the show to do so. The show is set in 1940s Brooklyn, a pre-Civil Rights Movement time and place in which it would have been especially difficult for a Black worker like Willy to prosper. A <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/02/theater/death-of-a-salesman-review-wendell-pierce.html" target="_blank">New York Times review of the London premiere</a> notes this:&nbsp;"While he has absorbed and abides by the mythology and rules of the American dream of self-advancement, there's a part of Willy that worries the odds are fatally stacked against him." The casting of the Lomans as Black sharpens Miller's critique of the American Dream, pointing to how it was and is not equally reachable for people of all races.The London Theatre review of the 2019 premiere also reads: "[This casting] attests to the power of performance and gives some stunning black actors access to roles that have been historically denied to them."The formidable Broadway cast includes&nbsp;The Wire,&nbsp;Suits,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Malcolm X&nbsp;star Wendell Pierce as Willy Loman; Tony nominee and three-time Olivier Award winner <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/sharon-d-clarke" target="_blank">Sharon D Clarke</a> as Linda Loman; Tony winner&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/andre-de-shields" target="_blank">Andr&Atilde;&copy; De Shields</a>&nbsp;as Ben; Drama Desk Award winner McKinley Belcher III as Happy Loman; and Atlanta&nbsp;star Khris Davis as Biff Loman. Pierce first performed on Broadway in 1985's&nbsp;The Boys of Winter&nbsp;and followed it up by playing three small roles in 1988's&nbsp;Serious Money.&nbsp;He's since produced two Broadway plays, one of which (2012 Best Play winner&nbsp;Clybourne Park) won him a Tony Award, but he hasn't performed on Broadway again until now.&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;marks a return for Pierce nearly 35 years in the making, so you won't want to miss seeing him live. With his busy screen career, too, who knows when you'll have another chance?Clarke, on the other hand, just made her Broadway debut last season (though her career in British film, TV, and theatre spans decades). History is repeating itself: After winning an Olivier Award for her performance as Caroline in&nbsp;Caroline, or Change&nbsp;in London, she transferred with the production to Broadway in fall 2021 and got a Tony nomination in the spring. Now, after winning another Olivier Award for her performance as Linda in&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;in London, she's transferring with the production to Broadway in fall 2022. The jury's out on the Tony nomination until spring 2023, so we'll have to wait and see if Clarke does it two years in a row.

That award, her third, made her the only female director in history with three Tonys (she was previously the only female director with two, so she beat her own record) and the only female director to win Tonys for directing a play and a musical.&nbsp;Elliott isn't directing the play in New York, but she is producing it, and her award-winning influence is sure to still loom large.<h2>This production is the latest of many recent Arthur Miller revivals.</h2>Miller has been having a moment on Broadway lately. In 2019, at the same time&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;was going up at the Young Vic, Miller's <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/all-my-sons" target="_blank">All My Sons</a>&nbsp;had its latest Broadway revival starring <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/tracy-letts" target="_blank">Tracy Letts</a> and <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/annette-bening" target="_blank">Annette Bening</a>.&nbsp;(Coincidentally, a star-studded&nbsp;All My Sons&nbsp;revival was also premiering at London's Old Vic, too.) <h2>1949</h2>Death of a Salesman&nbsp;was all but an instant classic when the show premiered at the now-demolished Morosco Theatre on Broadway. Opening night was on February 10, 1949, and after rave reviews, the show ran for 742 performances in just under two years. Miller himself was heavily involved in the production:&nbsp;Jo Mielziner designed the sets and lighting to his precise specifications. In his vision, the walls of the Loman house were transparent, and you'd know whether a scene took place in the present or the past depending on whether the characters were walking through or around the walls. Miller also wanted softer, warmer lighting for scenes in the past than in the present.One way the production differed from his vision, however, was in its lead casting. Miller envisioned Willy as a physically small man, to emphasize the large weight of the world and his failings on him. But every auditioner besides Lee J. Cobb, the burly man who was eventually cast,&nbsp;"seemed to lack the size of the character, even if they fit the body," Miller wrote in his autobiography&nbsp;Timebends. He and director Elia Kazan — yes, the very same Hollywood legend — called Cobb the "walrus" and eventually added that descriptor into the script.Miller wasn't sold on the casting at first, though, complaining that Cobb's delivery was more reserved than everyone else's in rehearsal. But as the story goes, Cobb suddenly came out of his shell one day and his performance "clicked" for everyone in the room.In the years since, Cobb's grand performance has become iconic, influencing all the Willys that have come after him. Kazan's vision and&nbsp;Mielziner's set have done the same, as has the incidental score by Alex North, which multiple revivals reused.Though&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;was a success on Broadway — winning six Tony Awards including Best Play, Best Director, and Best Author, as well as the Pulitzer Prize — the show didn't do as well when it got the film treatment a year later. It was a critical hit, but not an audience one; at a time of post-World War II prosperity and hope, film audiences weren't as keen as Broadway audiences on seeing a story about a working American's failure.

<h2>1975</h2>The 1975&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;revival, the show's first, was the only one thus far not to win the Best Revival Tony Award. George C. Scott did, though, get the production's sole Tony nomination for starring as Willy. He also got high critical praise: a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1975/06/27/archives/scott-puts-acting-magic-in-salesman.html" target="_blank">New York Times review</a> reads, "Mr. Scott dares — he dares anything and everything, like both bull and bullfighter in an arena. He will physically grovel at one point — he actually makes Willy unlikable, and constantly stresses the man's lack of dignity. He reveals the bonhomme of the natural loser. Wtih his raspy voice, and his face fixed in some horrid rictus of grinning despair, Mr. Scott gives us an unforgettable portrait of a man whose dream has failed."Death of a Salesman&nbsp;held up more of a mirror to American society in 1975 than it did in 1949. America was coming off a war victory and entering a prosperous economic era in 1949, but in 1975, America had just lost the Vietnam War, and an economic recession was imminent. Miller's play questioned the American Dream at a time when many real-life Americans were likely doing the same.

<h2>1984</h2>Dustin Hoffman led the second revival of&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;in 1984.&nbsp;Coincidentally, the Broadway run ended on November 18 of that year, the same day the 1949 premiere run ended. It began over a month later, though, on March 21, 1984 rather than February 10.This&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;called back to the original in a few other ways, too; namely, the use of Alex North's score of incidental music, and the casting of Hoffman. Cobb and Scott were large men, but Hoffman was smaller and wiry, as Miller originally intended. Miller changed the "walrus" descriptor of Willy's size, which he added into the script for Cobb, to "shrimp" for this production, and added back other size descriptors he took out in 1949.The production won the Best Revival (then called Best Reproduction) Tony Award and the Outstanding Revival Drama Desk Award. Kate Reid (Linda), John Malkovich (in his Broadway debut as Biff), and Stephen Lang (Happy) rounded out the immediate Loman family, and in 1985, all four actors (including Hoffman) would reprise their roles in a TV film adaptation of&nbsp;Death of a Salesman.&nbsp;After Hoffman and Malkovich won Drama Desk Awards for their Broadway performances, they won Emmy Awards for their screen performances. Hoffman also nabbed a Golden Globe.

<h2>1999</h2>This Broadway revival was the 50th-anniversary production of&nbsp;Death of a Salesman. The run opened February 10, 1999, 50 years to the day after the 1949 premiere, and it once again won the Best Revival Tony.The production was decidedly modern in certain ways, with a jazz score and a revolving set. Elizabeth Franz also brought new depth to the character of Linda, playing her as strong and angry about Willy's delusions rather than as a demure doormat who bends to him. Miller, who was rather married to Kazan's original production, saw this revival. He later <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1999-feb-05-mn-5107-story.html" target="_blank">told the LA Times</a>, "This [revival] is a revelation. I learned one thing: Thank God, there is more than one viable way to do this play."Brian Dennehy starred in Death of a Salesman&nbsp;in 1999. Ironically, he is the only Willy to match his character's age description; Dennehy was 61 when he played the 63-year-old role, while the actors before him were in their 40s. Like Hoffman and his 1984 co-stars, Dennehy, alongside fellow Broadway cast members Franz, Ted Koch (Happy), and Howard Witt (Charley), reprised their roles in a film adaptation the next year. Dennehy won a Tony Award and a Golden Globe Award for his respective performances, and Franz also won a Tony.

<h2>2012</h2>The fourth Broadway revival of&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;boasted a star-studded cast, with Philip Seymour Hoffman leading the show as Willy Loman. (Like all but Dennehy, he, too, played the role in his 40s.) In a <a href="https://www.npr.org/2014/02/03/270874323/philip-seymour-hoffman-on-his-portrayal-of-willy-loman" target="_blank">2012 NPR interview</a>, Hoffman said, for him, the play "really seeps into why we're here. What are we doing? Family, work, friends, hopes, dreams, careers; what's happiness? What's success? What does it mean? Is it important? How do you get it?"&nbsp;While his performance earned Hoffman his third Tony nomination (he got one for all three of his Broadway shows), playing the tormented role also took a toll on him toward the end of his life.Death of a Salesman&nbsp;ended up being Hoffman's last Broadway production, whereas it was the debut of another actor: <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/andrew-garfield" target="_blank">Andrew Garfield</a>, who played Willy's son Biff. This play jumpstarted Garfield's New York stage career; he got a Tony nomination for his performance and later achieved a Tony win for starring in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/angels-in-america-a-gay-fantasia-on-national-themes" target="_blank">Angels in America</a>&nbsp;in 2018.This revival combined old with new, design-wise. Director Mike Nichols has said that seeing the original&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;in 1949 made him fall in love with theatre, so as a testament, his revival reused both Alex North's score and Jo Mielziner's set design from that production. These elements were presented alongside an updated cast, costumes, and lights, but the production had a similar look and feel to what the show's first audiences likely watched. A <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/16/theater/reviews/death-of-a-salesman-with-philip-seymour-hoffman.html" target="_blank">New York Times review of the 2012 production</a> notes, "It's a beautiful, lyrical, ghostly vision &acirc;&#128;&#148; appropriate to a play in which an idealized past haunts an unforgiving present."

<h2>2022</h2>The 2022 revival of&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;is actually a transfer of a London production that first went up in 2019.&nbsp;The Wire&nbsp;star Wendell Pierce and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/caroline-or-change" target="_blank">Caroline, or Change</a>&nbsp;Tony nominee <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/sharon-d-clarke" target="_blank">Sharon D Clarke</a> first played the Lomans at the Young Vic theatre across the pond, and they received <a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/review-death-of-a-salesman-at-the-young-vic" target="_blank">such high praise</a> that the show moved to the Piccadilly Theatre in the West End later that year. (Think an Off-Broadway production moving to Broadway.)After the pair&nbsp;<a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/review-death-of-a-salesman-at-the-piccadilly-theatre" target="_blank">got rave reviews once again</a>, it was announced that Pierce and Clarke would reprise their roles in New York, marking the first&nbsp;Death of a Salesman&nbsp;Broadway production with a Black Loman family. Khris Davis and McKinley Belcher III play the Loman sons, and Tony winner&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/andre-de-shields" target="_blank">Andr&Atilde;&copy; De Shields</a>&nbsp;appears as the ghostly Ben in Willy's memories.As <a href="https://www.standard.co.uk/culture/theatre/wendell-pierce-interview-death-of-a-salesman-a4184506.html" target="_blank">Pierce noted in an interview with the Evening Standard</a>,&nbsp;"great danger, violence, oppressive attitudes, subtle humiliations were part of daily life for an African American family" in 1940s New York, where the show is set. *Some Like It Hot* is a musical adapted from the 1959 Billy Wilder comedy of the same name, in which two Prohibition-era jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, flee the Chicago mob. While stowing away in disguise with an all-female swing band, they find love and learn more about their truest identities.

Matthew López and Amber Ruffin wrote the book, and songs are by Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics). Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs.

The musical adaptation of the 1959 Billy Wilder film at the Shubert Theatre. was the most Tony Award-nominated show of the 2022-23 season with 13 nods.

Sometimes the dividing line between a character and a playwright is a blurry one. So it is with Ossie Davis’s 1961 satirical comedy [*Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27642-purlie-victorious-tickets), now back on Broadway for the first time since its debut 62 years ago.

The story follows Purlie Victorious Judson, a Black self-made traveling preacher who returns to his segregated Georgia hometown with a mission to buy and rehab its derelict church, Big Bethel. As a Black man, that’s a tall order. The church, like the town, is in the grip of racist tyrant Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee.

Davis grew up in racially segregated Georgia. Like Purlie, Davis had first-hand experience with discrimination and bigotry, forces that inform the play and fueled his lifelong commitment to civil rights. In a pre-show voiceover, director Kenny Leon notes that the play began as an angry drama. But it evolved to become less autobiographical and funnier. Get people laughing, you get people’s attention. Davis situated his play in Georgia in the late 1950s, a time when Jim Crow – which has been called “a racial caste system” – were in effect in the American South. Bottom line: Blacks were second-class citizens.

“Jim Crow was more than a series of rigid anti-black laws. It was a way of life,” according to the [Jim Crow Museum](https://jimcrowmuseum.ferris.edu/), a resource to tell the story of African American resiliency. Jim Crow bolstered the lie that Blacks were inferior to whites. 

Davis shrewdly creates Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee to be the flesh-and-blood manifestation of Jim Crow, a man dressed head to toe in white who won’t hesitate to say he reveres “all that is white and holy” – and that doesn’t include African Americans. He sums the philosophy up in a chilling line: "My ol' Confederate father told me on his deathbed: Feed the Negras first - after the horses and cattle."

Cotchipee is quick to reach for his bullwhip, but he takes a shine to Purlie’s brother Gitlow (that name is no accident), an “Uncle Tom” who’s content being subservient and keeping to the old-plantation-day ways. 

But Davis leaves room for hope. Cotchipee’s liberal-minded son Charlie has had it with his father’s bigoted ways – and that ultimately leads the way for Purlie to get the last laugh.

## The real-life partnership of *Purlie Victorious*

Purlie’s plan to take ownership of Big Bethel requires a secret weapon – Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, a follower and love interest of Purlie's who’s game for anything. Ossie Davis played the title role in the comedy’s Broadway premiere, so naturally, his wife, Ruby Dee, played Lutiebelle. 

The couple, who were married for 57 years, previously shared a Broadway stage in 1946 in *Jeb* and 1959 in *A Raisin in the Sun*. *Purlie Victorious* gave them a chance to chomp into two juicy roles together onstage. And their involvement in the show didn't end with the original production: Dee later played the supporting role of Idella in a 2002 reading.

They frequently worked together throughout their careers until he died in 2005 at 87; she died in 2014 at 91. But *Purlie Victorious* gave them a unique chance to shine a bright spotlight on the struggle for equality.

## Famous *Purlie Victorious* reviews

Suffice it to say that the social influencers of 1961 took notice of what Purlie Victorious was preaching. Fellow reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. saw the show. So did Malcolm X. According to Davis, [X said](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ccbh/mxp/davis.html), “Black folks laughing at White folks was revolutionary — the highest kind of struggle he could imagine.” 

Eleanor Roosevelt also attended. She laughed, and then she [wrote about the experience](https://www2.gwu.edu/~erpapers/myday/displaydoc.cfm?_y=1962&_f=md005050). “Mixed with the humor there is intelligent, incisive commentary on segregation, discrimination, and the slow pace of integration,” she wrote.

“I think it is well for you as an American citizen to see it,” she added, “and ponder our racial problem… as a question affecting our standing and our real sincerity among the peoples of the world.”

Call that a *Purlie* of wisdom.

## Behind the Emerald Curtain

## Trapeze class

One of the most jaw-dropping moments in *Wicked* is when Elphaba takes flight. If you want to get a taste of what it feels like to soar through the air, you can take a flying trapeze class. The Trapeze School of New York at Hudson River Park, for example, teaches you how to hang by your knees, fly through the air, and do a “catch” (when someone on another trapeze bar catches you) all in your first class.

Antihero, anyone? *Tootsie* Tony winner Santino Fontana stars as Harry Bogen, an eager-beaver shipping clerk in 1937 New York City whose ambition is rivaled only by his unscrupulousness. This [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company) production marks the first revival of the 1962 musical in 30 years and is a bit of a family affair. Revisions to Jerome Weidman’s original book, based on his novel, are by his son, John Weidman. Songs are by Harold Rome.

They join seven [previously announced cast members](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/new-musical-how-to-dance-in-ohio-to-premiere-on-broadway-this-fall) making their Broadway debuts: Desmond Luis Edwards as Remy, Amelia Fei (Yi-Hsuan Fei) as Caroline, Madison Kopec as Marideth, Liam Pearce as Drew, Imani Russell as Mel, Conor Tague as Tommy, and Ashley Wool as Jessica. All are autistic actors reprising their roles from Syracuse as the autistic adults in the show.

Other previously announced cast members include Haven Burton as Terry, Darlesia Cearcy as Johanna, Carlos L Encinias, Nick Gaswirth, Melina Kalomas, and Martín Solá.

How to Dance in Ohio on Broadway

The new musical, based on Alexandra Shiva's Peabody Award-winning documentary about autistic adults, begins performances at the Belasco Theatre in November.

Their name is Lancelot! Taran Killam and Alex Brightman join the cast of the upcoming [*Spamalot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33129-spamalot-tickets) Broadway revival, playing at the [St. James Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre) from October 31. Opening night is November 16.

Killam returns to Broadway after playing King George III in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2017. He is better known, however, for his onscreen comedy performances on *madTV* and *Saturday Night Live*, in addition to multiple sitcoms. He will play Lancelot through January 7 only.

Brightman will step into the role from January 9. He is currently starring as Richard Dreyfuss in [*The Shark Is Broken*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28737-the-shark-is-broken-tickets) on Broadway, and he is also known for leading the Broadway musical adaptations of *Beetlejuice* and *School of Rock*. Brightman also played Lancelot at the Kennedy Center, where this *Spamalot* revival production premiered earlier this year under director/choreographer Josh Rhodes.

As [previously announced](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/spamalot-sets-broadway-cast-and-creative-team), multiple other cast members from that production will also return for the Broadway transfer: Christopher Fitzgerald as Patsy, James Monroe Iglehart as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as The Lady of the Lake, Jimmy Smagula as Sir Bedevere, Michael Urie as Sir Robin, and Nik Walker as Sir Galahad. Ethan Slater also stars as The Historian/Prince Herbert.

*Spamalot* is the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of *Monty Python and the Holy Grail*, written by John Du Prez and founding Monty Python member Eric Idle. The show is an irreverent sendup of Arthurian legends.

Ease on down to Broadway! A revival of [*The Wiz*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27115-the-wiz-tickets) will begin performances this spring at the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre). The first performance is March 29, and opening night is April 17.

The announcement of the New York production comes as *The Wiz* opened its pre-Broadway national tour in Baltimore, Maryland — where the Tony Award-winning original 1975 production premiered — last night.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black retelling of *The Wizard of Oz*, infusing it with jazz, pop, ballet, and Black cultural influences. The show features a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls and others, including Luther Vandross. The 2023 revival features additional material by Amber Ruffin, also represented on Broadway with *Some Like It Hot*.

Schele Williams directs the 2023 production, which features choreography by JaQuel Knight, scenic design by Hannah Beachler; costume design by Sharen Davis; lighting design by Ryan J. O’Gara; sound design by Jon Weston; projection design by Daniel Brodie; wig design by Charles LaPointe; makeup design by Kirk Cambridge-Del Pesche; music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert; vocal and music arrangements by Allen René Louis; and dance music arrangements by Adam Blackstone.

Wayne Brady will star in the latest revival of the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical, which just launched a national tour prior to its New York opening.

The career paths of Josh Gad and [Andrew Rannells](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-rannells) happily keep on colliding – and paralleling. Right now, they’re at the [James Earl Jones Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/james-earl-jones-theatre) in [*Gutenberg! The Musical!*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/31399-gutenberg-the-musical-tickets), a show with two actors and just as many exclamation points. The comic duo play musical theatre composers writing a show about the inventor of the printing press.

Out there? Sure. Then again, the story of misbegotten Mormon missionaries in Uganda is also wacky. That’s what the long-running, Tony Award-winning musical [*The Book of Mormon*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/127-the-book-of-mormon-tickets), in which Gad and Rannells first performed together, is about.

## 2005 and 2006: Broadway debuts

In January 2005, Rannells took over as high school student Fender in *Hairspray*. Like a ’60s beehive hairdo, the actor ascended high to the lead role of teenage heartthrob Link Larkin. Rannells has stepped into key roles in other Broadway shows including Bob Gaudio in *Jersey Boys*, the title role in *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, and King George in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets). 

A year later, in January 2006, the musical *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* introduced Gad to Broadway audiences. He took over the role of allergy-prone William Barfee, a kid who uses his “magic foot” to write out words before spelling them.

## 2011: *The Book of Mormon*

In 2011, Rannells and Gad landed the lead roles in the irreverent, sometimes profane musical by Robert Lopez (*Frozen, Avenue Q*) and *South Park* creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Rannells and Gad starred as Elders Price and Cunningham: Mormon missionaries in Uganda who are young, eager, in over their head, and making things up as they go along. Both got Best Actor Tony nominations for the still-running hit at the [Eugene O’Neill Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/eugene-o-neill-theatre).

## 2006 and 2016: The William Finn connection

Gad belted the kicky tune “Magic Foot” by William Finn in his Broadway debut in *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*. Rannells earned his second Tony nomination – Best Actor in a Supporting Role, as the ailing Whizzer – in the 2016 revival of *Falsettos*, a show with music, lyrics, and a book by Finn.

## 2013 and 2016: The Disney connection

Beyond the stage, Disney is common ground for the pair. For episodes of the animated TV series *Sofia the First*, Rannells voiced Morris, a goblin. Meanwhile, Gad voiced Olaf, the fan-fave snowman in the *Frozen* film franchise.

## 2023: *Gutenberg! The Musical!*

As Bud and Doug in this musical by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the actors wear a lot of hats – and that’s not a metaphor. They play the authors of a show about Johannes Gutenberg, which they pitch to potential investors with the means to finance the project. They act out the show playing characters whose names are on baseball caps.
