In fact,&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;and some of the show's cast members hold records for their longevity.&nbsp;There's a Guinness World Record-holding actor who earned her prize as part of&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;— not to mention multiple other actors who've simply stayed on for years and years. And with long revival runs both on Broadway and in the West End,&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;has proven the timeless, universal appeal of the ol' razzle dazzle. However, the 1996 revival has surpassed that tenfold. As of October 2021, the&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;revival has played more than 9,700 performances at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theaters/ambassador-theatre" target="_blank">Ambassador Theatre</a>. The musical holds the record by a long shot: the second-longest revival in Broadway history is that of&nbsp;Oh! Calcutta!&nbsp;beginning in 1976, which played 5,959 performances.<h2>Longest-running show to premiere on Broadway</h2>Only one show has continually run on Broadway longer than the current&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;revival:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/the-phantom-of-the-opera" target="_blank">The Phantom of the Opera</a>,&nbsp;which opened in 1988 and has played 13,370 performances as of September 2021. However, the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical had its world premiere in London's West End, whereas&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;began in New York.<h2>Longest-running American musical on Broadway</h2>"American musical" here refers to a show written by an American creative team.&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;holds this record for the same reason as the above: The only longer-running musical,&nbsp;Phantom, was penned by the Brits Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Richard Stilgoe and Charles Hart. Conversely,&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;was written by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Bob Fosse, all of whom were born in the United States.<h2>Longest-running American musical on the West End</h2>Not only is the current&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;production the longest-running American musical in its own country, but the show also captured the same longevity in England. Like the Broadway counterpart, the original West End production had a (comparatively) modest run at only 600 performances beginning in 1979. The 1997 revival, however, stuck around for nearly 15 years, finally closing in 2012 at 6,187 performances. However, that&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;revival still holds the record for longest-running American musical on the West End; the only longer-running shows there having been written by Brits. (That is, unless you count&nbsp;The Lion King, which has a half-British, half-American creative team.)&nbsp;<h2>Fastest recovery of initial production costs</h2>Only about a third of Broadway shows recoup their production costs and end up making a profit.&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;cost $2.5 million to produce,&nbsp;but the show's quick success and stripped-back aesthetic led the musical to earn back those initial costs faster than any other musical in history. The Broadway show has now made over $600 million.<h2>Longest career as the same character in a Broadway show: Donna Marie Asbury</h2>Donna Marie Asbury began performing the role of June — the merry murderess who says "he ran into my knife 10 times" in "Cell Block Tango" — on March 25, 1999. She played that same role, along with understudying Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, for her entire tenure with&nbsp;Chicago. When she departed the production on June 3, 2019, she had played the role for 20 years and 71 days. A year later to the day, Guinness World Records informed her that she was a record holder for cell block tangoing that long.<h2>Most performances by a leading actress in&nbsp;Chicago: Roz Ryan</h2>Chicago&nbsp;has set many records in the theatre world as a whole, but the musical's Broadway production boasts a few impressive internal records, too. The show is notorious for including performers that stay on for years. One of them is Roz Ryan, who made her debut in&nbsp;Chicago&nbsp;in January 1999 as Matron "Mama" Morton. She played the role for at least a few months every year between then and 2014, then in 2016 and on the national tour in 2019.In the middle of her run, in October 2013, she clocked her 224th total week as Mama, setting a new record for the most performances by a leading actress in that show. The previous record was held jointly by Marcia Lewis (also as Mama Morton) and Charlotte d'Amboise (as Roxie Hart), each with 223 weeks under their garters — also an unusually extensive time to be with one production. <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/david-byrnes-american-utopia" target="_blank">American Utopia</a>&nbsp;isn't your average Broadway show, and Tendayi Kuumba and Chris Giarmo aren't your average Broadway dancers. The two performed in the first Broadway run of the theatrical rock concert, led by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, in 2019, and have returned for the second engagement, playing at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre" target="_blank">St. James Theatre</a> through March 6, 2022.Giarmo and Kuumba are two pieces of a 12-person ensemble moving seamlessly about a bare stage. As the only cast members billed as dancers and the only two on stage without instruments, they are "the freest agents" with the largest range of motion, according to Kuumba. Sometimes they move in unison with Byrne, and other times they break off into their own movement to complement Byrne's singing, though they don't explicitly act the songs out. As Kuumba put it: "If David's the narrator, we're the page turners and the ones that hold the book."The two meld small, stylized motions — think one body part moving at a time — with full-body movements that call to mind modern, contemporary, musical theatre, and even African dance. But as they and choreographer&nbsp;Annie-B Parson&nbsp;pointed out, choreography isn't just flashy, flexible movement. It's every step, every breath, and every moment of awareness of everyone on stage. The cast dances barefoot in plain gray suits onstage, which is unconventional for mainstream Broadway. More importantly, their work comes from a collaborative process&nbsp;Kuumba and Giarmo hope becomes the new normal.The dancers talked about their role in the storytelling of&nbsp;American Utopia&nbsp;and what the future of Broadway dance looks like.<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/david-byrnes-american-utopia" target="_blank">Get&nbsp;David Byrne's American Utopia&nbsp;tickets now.</a>How does the storytelling you do through dance complement what the instrumentalists do with music and movement?Giarmo:&nbsp;We're responsible for stillness in a way that is unique, and control of personal space. Because we're always adjacent to David — in most of the show, next to him — it's important to have a groundedness. We really stabilize, physically and kinetically, a lot of the show.Kuumba:&nbsp;In addition to the macro-movement, there's a lot of micro-movement that is really essential to recharging each other physically, emotionally, mentally, and how it radiates throughout the space.Do you have a character or narrative in mind as you move around the stage?Kuumba:&nbsp;It could change day to day, and then sometimes it changes song to song. In [the song] "Blind," the shadow dance is a thing for me now. There's a moment in "Blind" in the beginning when we're all facing the back, also the side, and our shadows are on the chain. I really love call and response of movement and sound and the body, and people trying to challenge and playing with responding to movements, so I play a game with myself every "Blind" and try to literally synchronize each movement to the cadence of David's singing, to each word. I try to listen and think of, "Okay, if there are 10 other musicians, how many of their instruments can I 'play,' and where can I point to those instruments in my body?"What was it like to watch the show and what did that teach you about your role?Kuumba:&nbsp;I was watching the person whose position I'm about to take. And I knew who David Byrne was, but I didn't know who David Byrne&nbsp;was, and not just who he is as an artist but also how much he means to so many people. I just felt a lot of electricity. I was still learning the show, so I was harmonizing with every song... and dancing in my seat and making sure my choreography was right. So it was very electrifying. It was satisfying. It was encouraging, like watching someone do a race before it's your turn to run the relay.The [Janelle Monae song] "Hell You [Talmbout]" singing at the end of the show and saying names of people that have been killed by the police and Black people that have lost their lives — this was one of the main chunks that also really tugged at my heartstrings. Being a Black woman, agreeing to hop on a show where I know I'm going to be one of few dancers, and then I'm going to be one of the few Black women and a whole-bodied Black woman, being very clear of what I'm really stepping into and how I can take that electricity and make it work for me.Giarmo:&nbsp;The things that I learned stepping out were very experiential. We get in our heads a lot ... and to see it, [you] realize that a lot of those concerns don't translate. I've written to you [Tendayi] about this idea of walking on stage and feeling like [I'm] not supposed to be there. David is so iconic, and his audiences generally look like him and are him in a lot of ways, and so I express this idea of, "As soon as I walk out on stage, what will they think of me?" "Who is this guy? Why is he here?" But seeing it, no one experiences that because it's the benefit of abstraction in performance. When another entire human enters the space, we don't know what to do. We just have to trust them.Did anything change about your performances from&nbsp;American Utopia's&nbsp;first Broadway run?Giarmo:&nbsp;For me, vocally, it's a whole different bag. I sang all the time during the pandemic, but I was at my house; it was a different situation. And my range is different now, and it's better, it's higher. I actually have a totally different set of breathing things I have to do to hit different notes. It's easier in a lot of ways, but that in and of itself makes it more tricky because all of the choreography — which is not just the dance, it's the breath, it's the sipping of water, it's the opening of your mouth, when you close, when you stop singing the note. That means things are easier to sing, but that means all the other choreography you've done needs to change now, because you need to take a smaller breath there, or else you'll over-sing it, or you need to recalibrate this thing.Kuumba:&nbsp;I'm coming out of also singing a lot in my house during the pandemic and moving here and there, so my body is recalibrating because I danced really hard for a really long time of my career, touring a lot, dancing with multiple companies a lot. I'm relearning what my new push is for my 30-plus-year-old body and knees, what my new stretch routine is post-show, what my new warm-up routine has to be post-show in the midst of the pandemic, where my body had gotten used to laying flat in a bed.What from your past dance training have you embraced — and rejected — to do Annie-B Parson's choreography for this show?Kuumba:&nbsp;I come from performance dance and throwing yourself across the stage. [Parson] used to tell me a lot, "Okay, less. Okay, pull it back." But I really appreciate it because it's helped me re-understand energy in the body. I had a teacher say you don't have to dance hard to dance big, and I feel like Annie-B has such specificity. We don't even have to dance big at all; it can be very small and very specific for a very specific moment. Hold and make everyone focus there. Instead of having to be big for everyone else, make them come into you. And I've appreciated how her movement is... very pedestrian in a way, but so meaningful. You don't throw it away.Giarmo:&nbsp;I come from Annie-B's world, which is much more about, "Move that thing in a very specific, cold way, and the meaning will be something that happens outside." But the merger of these two worlds [of small and big movements], which we've been praising Annie-B for, I must fully praise you [Tendayi] as well for bringing in a thing that she would have never figured out.How do you see unconventional shows like&nbsp;Utopia, with dance that's more modern and pedestrian than traditional Broadway dance, fitting into the landscape of Broadway dance going forward?Kuumba:&nbsp;I'm a person that appreciates all of it — I grew up [as a] theatre child as well as a West African dance child, so I don't necessarily cut one arm off. I hope to see more spaces for more genres of movement on Broadway, and not just contemporary, modern, or modern-means-expressive or liturgical or narrating out a spoken-word artist. I'd like to see it pushed more. And I feel very, very grateful to represent a little portion of that within my body being on stage, doing what I do.Giarmo:&nbsp;Wayne Brady said something really sweet to us at the Tonys. He found us and was like, "I saw the show and I Googled you two afterwards, and you're so incredible. I just want you to know that you're where Broadway is going and where it needs to go, and you're representing that, and thank you for that." That obviously means so much to me because I feel like there's a lot of great things that we're bringing from the downtown world to Broadway. Just this idea of devising work together, having input, being able to say "this will work for me" or "this won't work for me. Here's why."It makes better work all around when you dismantle that hierarchy a little bit. I think there's a fear that you don't get the same rigor or specificity or virtuosity. That's just bullshit; that's just a lie that was created to keep certain people in the room and certain people out. "The young are at the gates."This line is sung repeatedly in the new Off-Broadway musical&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/suffs" target="_blank">Suffs</a> about women's suffrage. The resounding refrain is a call to action for the next generation of leaders in the movement. But it's also a reminder that emerging talent and newcomers are ready to break through on stage as well.&nbsp;Suffs&nbsp;follows its own example, casting Nadia Dandashi, an actress fresh out of Pace University, to play the college-aged suffragist Doris.Having graduated college a year ago myself, I was thrilled to see Dandashi's BFA as the only credit in her bio in a high-profile production with multiple Broadway veterans. I was even more excited to watch her Doris, though initially underestimated, be the one to debate a political bigwig and get him on the suffragists' side.And it's not just downtown at&nbsp;Suffs. Uptown, the young are also at Broadway's gates. Actually, they've broken through the gates, and many are now serious <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/news-features/2022-tony-award-nominees-announced-a-strange-loop-leads" target="_blank">contenders for some of this year's top Tony Awards</a>.Look at the Best Leading Actor in a Musical category. Alongside vets <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/billy-crystal" target="_blank">Billy Crystal</a>, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/rob-mcclure" target="_blank">Rob McClure</a>, and <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/hugh-jackman" target="_blank">Hugh Jackman</a> are two young Black men who are not only making their Broadway debuts, but their professional theatrical debuts. Jaquel Spivey landed the role of Usher in the Pulitzer Prize-winning&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/a-strange-loop" target="_blank">A Strange Loop</a>&nbsp;mere months after graduating from Point Park University. And Myles Frost was cast as the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/mj-the-musical" target="_blank">MJ the Musical</a>&nbsp;while still finishing up a degree in audio engineering at Bowie State University.Both their performances are nothing short of electric. Frost disappears into Jackson's voice, dance moves, and mannerisms to an uncanny degree; you'd think the singer came back to life. His audition — made especially remarkable by the fact that Frost was only able to audition after the production broadened its initial talent search, and&nbsp;<a href="https://wtop.com/entertainment/2022/05/from-wootton-high-school-to-broadway-tony-nominee-myles-frost-shares-his-journey/" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">he was bedridden with a bad allergic reaction the day before</a>&nbsp;— saved&nbsp;MJ&nbsp;after Tony nominee Ephraim Sykes suddenly dropped out, director Christopher Wheeldon told New York Theatre Guide.And Spivey bares his most vulnerable self — and a powerhouse voice — night after night for an unrelenting 100 minutes as an aspiring musical writer wracked with insecurity and self-loathing. He also delivers the show's comedic moments with flair and ease, showing great versatility.Look also at newly minted Tony nominees Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, who created the pop musical sensation&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/six" target="_blank">Six</a>&nbsp;while in college in 2017. The show became an overnight success at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before an acclaimed West End premiere, sold-out tours in the UK and US, and a Broadway debut that now has them in the running for the Best Musical and Best Original Score Tony Awards. Moss, who co-directed&nbsp;Six, is also the youngest female director in Broadway history.These success stories might surprise some — even Wheeldon, for one,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/19/theater/myles-frost-mj-broadway.html" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">told The New York Times</a>&nbsp;he had "fears" about Frost's inexperience at first. But the depth of a person's talent has nothing to do with age.Plus, if it's really true that the young are at the gates, that means they're in the audiences, too, wanting to support their peers.&nbsp;Six&nbsp;producer Kevin McCollum said as much to New York Theatre Guide: "When you give tools to young people to tell their stories in the vocabulary they want to tell them, you have an opportunity to create something new that resonates with the population of today."Just as people want to see themselves represented in terms of race or gender on stage, young people especially want to see ourselves represented in age. I think about&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/the-prom" target="_blank">The Prom</a>, which is set in a high school but whose Broadway actors were mostly mid-20s and up — except for ensemble member and my college classmate Wayne Mackins, whose casting (and incredible dancing) gave me a uniquely deep love for the show.Seeing a recent-grad actor or creator provides hope — not just to theatre students, but any young person — that great success in your field isn't reserved for when you're older. And on the creative side specifically, anyone can write or direct a youthful character or script, but references to our music and memes and pop culture and slang just feel most natural when it's actually young people behind them.For me, in a similar boat as one of few professional theatre writers my age, seeing recent grads succeed in other areas of the industry reminds me that despite my relative inexperience, I'm not alone out here. I'm supposed to be here. And there will be more of us.I felt a similar hope in 2019 after seeing Jeremy Pope make his Broadway debut in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/choir-boy" target="_blank">Choir Boy</a>&nbsp;when I was a college sophomore. Pope was 26 at the time, but he first played the role of Pharus at 21 off Broadway. He would then go on to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/aint-too-proud-the-life-and-times-of-the-temptations" target="_blank">Ain't Too Proud</a>&nbsp;and become only the sixth actor ever to get Tony nominations for two separate performances in the same season. He and this year's Tony nominees all prove that Broadway must pay attention to young people.As far as established sources of young talent, there are the&nbsp;high school theatre awards, the Jimmys, which launched the careers of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/hadestown" target="_blank">Hadestown</a>'s <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/eva-noblezada" target="_blank">Eva Noblezada</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/dear-evan-hansen" target="_blank">Dear Evan Hansen</a>'s&nbsp;Andrew Barth Feldman, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/mean-girls" target="_blank">Mean Girls</a>'s Renée Rapp and Kyle Selig. But there are so many other talent pools out there beyond the Jimmys.Neither Spivey nor Frost come from New York schools or top musical theatre programs (Frost is not from a theatre program at all!). Marlow and Moss come from the prestigious University of Cambridge and first presented&nbsp;Six&nbsp;at a well-known festival, but that doesn't make it less rare for their work to earn a global following so soon afterward. All these artists' origins prove that next-level talent can come from anywhere.If Spivey, Frost, Marlow, and Moss are any example, people from all backgrounds are putting themselves out there for auditions and showcases, and it's up to producers, directors, and casting directors to pay attention. And not just as a second or third or fifth resort — from the start."You've got to put yourselves in the room where it happens," echoed McCollum, referring to young artists. "But what I think is more important is ... to make sure we [producers] are finding or giving people those rooms in which to do their work."Having finished undergrad just a year ago, I knew theatre journalism jobs were (and are) just about as slim as acting jobs. I never thought I'd be able to work in the industry right out of college, but I'm so grateful that someone took a chance on me.My own modest success makes me all the more ecstatic for the Tony-nominated actors my age, to see them shining after Broadway took a chance on them, too. Fresh college graduates have become top contenders for this year's biggest honors.

We've all walked out of a musical awed at the actors' powerhouse singing, humming the show's catchy tunes, and running to add the complete score to our playlists. They're called musicals for a reason! But also...can we make "danceicals" a thing? While the music is (obviously) key to the greatness of a musical, you've probably also found yourself marveling at a gravity-defying leap or intricate, fast-footed steps on stage. In plenty of Broadway musicals, dance is king. The five not singing their solo at any given time support with background vocals and movement — even if they're not very supportive of each other. (Or are they?) It's impressive to watch the Queens move almost as a unit, with every head nod, step, and hip perfectly synchronized, thanks to Carrie-Anne Ingrouille's choreography.In a nutshell, watching&nbsp;Six&nbsp;is like watching a pop star and their backup dancers at a high-energy concert. And you know when you're at a concert, you want to stand up and groove, too! Unfortunately, you can't dance along during the show, but the best part of the&nbsp;Six&nbsp;choreography is that it's simple and clean. With a quick few YouTube tutorials (and a trip to see the show live), you can learn the dances move-for-move and pretend you're a Broadway queen at home.

And in "All-American Prophet," the&nbsp;Book of Mormon&nbsp;ensemble dances their way through the true story of Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon religion, truthfully yet comically. As David Schmader of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2013/01/17/the-book-of-mormon-and-the-power-of-hilarious-choreography" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">The Stranger</a>&nbsp;puts it, "If you want to economically underscore the ridiculousness of someone's argument, have them make it while doing an aggressively energetic 'funky strut' dance."

<h2>MJ The Musical</h2>There's a reason Michael Jackson is the only musical artist in the Dance Hall of Fame: He was a dancing machine. His dancing versatility was almost as expansive as his catalogue of hit songs: He popularized dances from the sharp, rigid robot to the totally opposite, smooth moonwalk. These signature moves and plenty more are all on display in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/mj-the-musical" target="_blank">MJ The Musical</a>, which takes audiences through Jackson's life and career as he rehearses for his 1992 Dangerous World Tour.Though Jackson's hit music is obviously a key part of&nbsp;MJ The Musical, it's really a dance show. Many of the rehearsal scenes and flashbacks alike feature Jackson and his backup dancers performing on stage, and dance numbers let the actors move smoothly through scene transitions. Plus, director/choreographer Christopher Wheeldon teamed up with "movement consultants" Rich and Tone Talauega, brothers who actually danced with Jackson, to make the movement as authentic to Jackson's style as possible. Director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw doesn't do anything small. He's known for large-scale musical spectaculars like *The Book of Mormon* and *Aladdin*, and *Some Like It Hot* is no different. This adaptation of the Marilyn Monroe movie features plenty of big-band swing and dance to match, performed by a large cast. High-stepping theatrical jazz and even tap dancing abound, and a chase scene at the end of the show is styled as a production number, choreographed to perfection.

## *Back to the Future: The Musical*

Choreographer Chris Bailey got a large ensemble for this stage adaptation of the cult-classic time-travel film, and he uses it to the fullest. Dance isn't the first thing you may think of when you hear *Back to the Future* (save for the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance), but it will be after you see this show.

The name of the game here is whimsy as Marty McFly travels from 1955 to 1985. The ensemble conveys youthful energy as they portray dancing high school students. Things take a more tender turn at the aforementioned school dance, where Marty's parents fall in love. And Doc Brown, the eccentric scientist who invents time travel, gets a full troupe of leggy chorus girls as backup for all his numbers. Why? The better question is, why not? "They show up every time I start singing," he nonchalantly explains.

<h2>Characters from Greek mythology in in&nbsp;Hadestown</h2>Eight main characters from Greek mythology are featured as lead roles in&nbsp;Hadestown.&nbsp;They're all essentially human in the play, but in the original myths, more than half are all-powerful gods and goddesses. The rest have some sort of powers of their own too, like magnetic beauty and the ability to play enchanting music.<ul> <li>Orpheus:&nbsp;A demigod, the son of Apollo, god of the sun and music, and the muse Kalliope. He inherited great musical skills from his parents — in Greek mythology, he can charm any living creature and even rocks with his music. Orpheus is featured in multiple Greek myths, including Jason and the Argonauts' quest to find the magical Golden Fleece (Orpheus was an Argonaut) and that of his own quest to rescue his late wife, Eurydice, from the underworld. He remains a lyre player in&nbsp;Hadestown, but a contemporary, poor one.</li> <li>Eurydice:&nbsp;In classical mythology, a beautiful wood nymph. She is killed by a snake shortly after marrying Orpheus and descends to the underworld. In&nbsp;Hadestown, Eurydice is an impoverished, lonely young girl who goes to the underworld (Hadestown) willingly, though she doesn't quite know what she's getting into.</li> <li>Hades:&nbsp;The god of the underworld, in both mythology and the musical. He is married to Persephone.</li> <li>Persephone:&nbsp;Persephone is the goddess of agriculture and vegetation and, after marrying Hades, becomes queen of the underworld by his side. She oversees the underworld (Hadestown) in the musical as well, but she's not happy about it.</li> <li>Hermes:&nbsp;Hermes is the messenger god, or the "herald of the gods," in Greek mythology. He is often depicted with winged shoes, representing his ability to deliver messages and move freely between the underworld and the world of the living. One Fate is the "spinner" who creates each person's life/thread, one is the "allotter" who measures each thread to determine a person's lifespan, and one is the "cutter" who cuts a person's thread when their life is at its end. In&nbsp;Hadestown,&nbsp;the three fates are a chorus, and they influence many decisions the other characters make.</li></ul><h2>Greek myths in&nbsp;Hadestown</h2>Hadestown&nbsp;borrows most of its story from two myths about couples: Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades and Persephone. These aren't fluffy rom-com romances — both couples go through their fair share of heartbreak. But both myths are epic love stories that have been told for centuries, and Anaïs Mitchell is just one of the latest people to tell them in a new way.<h3>Orpheus and Eurydice</h3>In the classical myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, the couple fall in love when Eurydice hears Orpheus playing his lyre and is entranced by his music and, therefore, him. Orpheus is likewise taken with Eurydice's beauty, and the two fall in love and get married. However, Hymen, the god of marriage who blessed their wedding, warns them their marriage won't last. Sure enough, one day in the woods, Eurydice steps on a snake that bites and kills her.Orpheus becomes depressed without Eurydice and loses his love of music, so with the help of Apollo, he goes to the underworld to ask Hades to let Eurydice back up to the land of the living. He plays a song on his lyre to convince him, and everyone in the underworld is moved. Hades agrees to Orpheus's request on one condition: that Orpheus can't look back at Eurydice the entire time they're going back up. They almost make it, but Orpheus reaches the land of the living just before her, and he looks back at her while she is still in the underworld. Some versions of the myth say he looked back out of excitement, thinking she was there; others say he looked back because he doubted whether she made it. Eurydice descends back down for good, and Orpheus loses her.<h3>Hades and Persephone</h3>The story of Persephone was invented to explain the changing seasons. As the most popular version of the myth goes, Persephone was alone picking flowers in a field when Hades, on a rare trip away from the underworld, sees and falls for her. He steals her from the land of the living and brings her to the underworld to be his bride. When her mother, the agriculture goddess Demeter, finds out, she tries to bring Persephone back. However, by that time, Persephone has already eaten the fruit of the underworld (pomegranate seeds), which means she's stuck in the underworld with Hades and can't leave.Eventually, Demeter makes a deal with Hades: Persephone will live with her for half the year and with Hades for the other half. In mythology, the bright and sunny spring and summer represent the time when Persephone and her mother are united above ground and happy. The chilly, bleak fall and winter are the seasons when Persephone is in the underworld.In another version of the myth, which has become more popular lately, Hades doesn't kidnap Persephone. Rather, she willingly chooses to marry Hades and rule the underworld, and that's why she refuses to return to Demeter. In the musical, like in the first version of the story, Persephone isn't happy to be in Hadestown — in fact, he built it to keep her with him, but she feels trapped. Hermes and Orpheus recap the myth in the songs "Epic I" and "Epic III."<h2>Changes to Greek mythology in&nbsp;Hadestown</h2>One of the most major changes from Greek mythology is the setting. The myths take place in a mystic version of Greece, in which the gods' dwelling (Mount Olympus) and the underworld are not just concepts, but places people can travel to. (Not that it's the easiest journey, as Orpheus could tell you.)&nbsp;Hadestown&nbsp;places the myths fully on Earth. Anaïs Mitchell reimagines the titular underworld as an underground sweatshop, and the way to get there is a Hadestown-bound railroad track called "the road to hell." Orpheus, since he's essentially sneaking into the underworld, takes an even more dangerous path parallel to the track.The characters, too, become types of people we could run into in our own lives. Orpheus is described as a legendary musician (and the son of a muse, but not in a godly context). Eurydice is simply "a hungry young girl." Hades and Persephone are still called gods, but not in a reverent way. Hades especially is a "god" in the way a greedy billionaire may be: He doesn't have otherwordly abilities, but he has absolute power over the factory workers in Hadestown, and he exploits it.The Fates talk to the other characters and influence their decisions, but they don't control them. Hermes is perhaps the closest to mythic godliness: His character is described as a god besides being an all-knowing narrator, and he's also portrayed as a Hoodoo deal-broker inspired by African spirituality. But ultimately, he is a wise old member of Orpheus's poor community in&nbsp;Hadestown.Other elements of the show take liberties from the original myths: The countless dead, forgotten souls in the mythological afterlife are the monolithic, soulless workforce of Hadestown, and Persephone runs a speakeasy for them to escape Hades and the factory that she doesn't want to be in, either. And of course, the music is a departure from Greek mythology: Hadestown&nbsp;is set to modern folk and jazz music, both of which are thousands of years younger than ancient Greek tunes.<h2>Greek mythology references in&nbsp;Hadestown&nbsp;songs</h2>Of course, the entirety of&nbsp;Hadestown&nbsp;is a two-and-a-half hour-long Greek mythology reference. But there are some songs that reference little details from the original myths that didn't make it into&nbsp;Hadestown's&nbsp;plot. Listen for them at the show!"The River Styx is a river of stones / And Hades lays them high and thick" from "Epic II." In Greek mythology, the River Styx is a passageway to the underworld, and only deceased people who pay a fare can travel it with the help of the ferryman Charon. In&nbsp;Hadestown, the River Styx is a wall that separates Hadestown from the rest of the world; his laborers continually build it up. The song "Nothing Changes" also mentions a river: The Fates say that your fate is your fate and ends in death, and it's just "the way the river runs," just like the River Styx literally flows toward death. Chilling!"See how the vipers and vultures surround you / And they'll take you down, they'll pick you clean." Hades sings this line to Eurydice when trying to convince her to go to Hadestown with him. In the original Greek myth, it is a venomous snake — a viper — that kills her and sends her to the underworld, and the lyric is inspired by that fate. You may notice that in the intro to the next song, "When the Chips Are Down," Hermes makes a similar reference: He describes Eurydice's standoff with Hades as a conflict of "songbird vs. rattlesnake.""Hound dogs howling 'round the gate / Those dogs'll lay down and play dead / If you got the bones, if you got the bread." Hermes describes guard dogs outside Hadestown in "Wait For Me." In mythology, the underworld is guarded by Hades's monstrous three-headed dog, Cerberus, and Orpheus got past the creature by lulling it to sleep with his lyre. Then, in "Wait For Me (Reprise)," Hermes sings: "The meanest dog you'll ever meet / He ain't the hound dog in the street / He bares some teeth and tears some skin / But brother, that's the worst of him." According to mythology and Mitchell, even hellish guard dogs get a lot nicer if you offer them a treat.

<h2>Brighton Beach Memoirs</h2>Brighton Beach Memoirs&nbsp;kicked off what would become a trend of Broderick appearing in Neil Simon plays. He starred in this show as Eugene Jerome, a Depression-era teenager who's coming of age amid family turmoil and the threat of violence in Poland, where his relatives live. (Contrary to what it may sound like, the show is a comedy.) Broderick's performance marked his Broadway debut, and he won a Best Featured Actor Tony Award for it. Not bad for a first gig!<h2>Biloxi Blues</h2>In his second Broadway appearance, he again played Eugene in this show about a conflict between two soldiers as told from Eugene's perspective. The play is a follow-up to&nbsp;Brighton Beach Memoirs, so it's only logical that Broderick would go from one to the other, retaining his role along the way. Along the way, he falls for secretary Rosemary Pilkington, a role that Sarah Jessica Parker held for a while! Broderick had already left the show by the time she was cast, but he returned for a second engagement just to perform with her.

The show ran for six years and won 12 Tony Awards. While&nbsp;The Producers&nbsp;is iconic anyway for Mel Brooks's comedy and the 1967 film that inspired it, the role of Leo Bloom is one of Broderick's most iconic Broadway gigs, and he was nominated for a Best Leading Actor Tony for his performance. He and Lane reprised their roles in the 2005 musical film adaptation, too, so you can still see his performance.

In the second (and most recent) Broadway revival, Broderick played the uptight Felix to Nathan Lane's laid-back Oscar, friends who become roommates after their marriages fall through. Like&nbsp;On the Town, Ferguson first joined that show for its Off-Broadway premiere with Second Stage, and he transferred to Broadway with it. He and the rest of the Broadway cast also won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance.

Ferguson played Ezra, the husband of Obie Award winner Phillip James Brannon's Chris. She was a replacement for the role of Rosemary Pilkington, secretary and future wife of Broderick's J. Pierrepont Finch. Actually, by the time she assumed the role, Broderick had left the show, but he returned just so he could star opposite Parker.

Swenson currently leads the show at the [Broadhurst Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/broadhurst-theatre) as Neil Diamond - Then, a younger version of the singer-songwriter as an up-and-coming musician. The show follows Diamond as he looks back on his life and career, and his [greatest hits](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/all-the-songs-in-a-beautiful-noise-on-broadway) propel the story of how he went from a poor Brooklyn kid to an award-winning, globally bestselling musician.

Swenson has played Diamond since *A Beautiful Noise* opened in November 2022. The current cast, most of whom are also original members, also includes Mark Jacoby as Neil Diamond – Now, Robyn Hurder as Marcia, Shirine Babb as Doctor, Jessie Fisher as Jaye Posner, Michael McCormick as Fred Weintraub/ Tommy O’Rourke, Tom Alan Robbins as Bert Berns/Kieve Diamond, and Bri Sudia as Ellie Greenwich/Rose Diamond.

Replacement casting for Swenson has yet to be announced. Nick Fradiani currently serves as Swenson's alternate, playing Neil Diamond - Then for one performance a week; he will continue in this role.

The actor originated the role of a young Neil Diamond in this musical at the Broadhurst Theatre about the Grammy Award-winning musician's life and career.

The heat is going away. [*Some Like It Hot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24262-some-like-it-hot-tickets) has set a Broadway closing date of December 30 at the [Shubert Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/shubert-theatre).

The musical will have played for just over a year, having played 483 total performances since November 1, 2022.

*Some Like It Hot* is a musical adapted from the 1959 Billy Wilder comedy of the same name, in which two Prohibition-era jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, flee the Chicago mob. While stowing away in disguise with an all-female swing band, they find love and learn more about their truest identities.

Matthew López and Amber Ruffin wrote the book, and songs are by Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics). Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs.

The musical adaptation of the 1959 Billy Wilder film at the Shubert Theatre. was the most Tony Award-nominated show of the 2022-23 season with 13 nods.

Sometimes the dividing line between a character and a playwright is a blurry one. So it is with Ossie Davis’s 1961 satirical comedy [*Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27642-purlie-victorious-tickets), now back on Broadway for the first time since its debut 62 years ago.

The story follows Purlie Victorious Judson, a Black self-made traveling preacher who returns to his segregated Georgia hometown with a mission to buy and rehab its derelict church, Big Bethel. As a Black man, that’s a tall order. The church, like the town, is in the grip of racist tyrant Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee.

Davis grew up in racially segregated Georgia. Like Purlie, Davis had first-hand experience with discrimination and bigotry, forces that inform the play and fueled his lifelong commitment to civil rights. In a pre-show voiceover, director Kenny Leon notes that the play began as an angry drama. But it evolved to become less autobiographical and funnier. Get people laughing, you get people’s attention. ## The politics of *Purlie Victorious*

Davis situated his play in Georgia in the late 1950s, a time when Jim Crow – which has been called “a racial caste system” – were in effect in the American South. Bottom line: Blacks were second-class citizens.

“Jim Crow was more than a series of rigid anti-black laws. It was a way of life,” according to the [Jim Crow Museum](https://jimcrowmuseum.ferris.edu/), a resource to tell the story of African American resiliency. Jim Crow bolstered the lie that Blacks were inferior to whites. 

Davis shrewdly creates Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee to be the flesh-and-blood manifestation of Jim Crow, a man dressed head to toe in white who won’t hesitate to say he reveres “all that is white and holy” – and that doesn’t include African Americans. He sums the philosophy up in a chilling line: "My ol' Confederate father told me on his deathbed: Feed the Negras first - after the horses and cattle."

Cotchipee is quick to reach for his bullwhip, but he takes a shine to Purlie’s brother Gitlow (that name is no accident), an “Uncle Tom” who’s content being subservient and keeping to the old-plantation-day ways. 

But Davis leaves room for hope. Cotchipee’s liberal-minded son Charlie has had it with his father’s bigoted ways – and that ultimately leads the way for Purlie to get the last laugh.

## The real-life partnership of *Purlie Victorious*

Purlie’s plan to take ownership of Big Bethel requires a secret weapon – Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, a follower and love interest of Purlie's who’s game for anything. Ossie Davis played the title role in the comedy’s Broadway premiere, so naturally, his wife, Ruby Dee, played Lutiebelle. 

The couple, who were married for 57 years, previously shared a Broadway stage in 1946 in *Jeb* and 1959 in *A Raisin in the Sun*. *Purlie Victorious* gave them a chance to chomp into two juicy roles together onstage. And their involvement in the show didn't end with the original production: Dee later played the supporting role of Idella in a 2002 reading.

They frequently worked together throughout their careers until he died in 2005 at 87; she died in 2014 at 91. But *Purlie Victorious* gave them a unique chance to shine a bright spotlight on the struggle for equality.

## Famous *Purlie Victorious* reviews

Suffice it to say that the social influencers of 1961 took notice of what Purlie Victorious was preaching. Fellow reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. saw the show. So did Malcolm X. According to Davis, [X said](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ccbh/mxp/davis.html), “Black folks laughing at White folks was revolutionary — the highest kind of struggle he could imagine.” 

Eleanor Roosevelt also attended. She laughed, and then she [wrote about the experience](https://www2.gwu.edu/~erpapers/myday/displaydoc.cfm?_y=1962&_f=md005050). “Mixed with the humor there is intelligent, incisive commentary on segregation, discrimination, and the slow pace of integration,” she wrote.

“I think it is well for you as an American citizen to see it,” she added, “and ponder our racial problem… as a question affecting our standing and our real sincerity among the peoples of the world.”

## Behind the Emerald Curtain

## Trapeze class

One of the most jaw-dropping moments in *Wicked* is when Elphaba takes flight. If you want to get a taste of what it feels like to soar through the air, you can take a flying trapeze class. The Trapeze School of New York at Hudson River Park, for example, teaches you how to hang by your knees, fly through the air, and do a “catch” (when someone on another trapeze bar catches you) all in your first class.

You can also try other gravity-defying activities, like trampoline classes and aerial hoop classes (also known as Lyra). It’s certainly a thrilling way to prepare for *Wicked*!

## *Wicked*

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Comedian Harmonists, a German sextet known for their freewheeling stage frolics and tight harmonies, ascended to popularity that spanned the globe. ### *I Can Get It for You Wholesale*

Antihero, anyone? *Tootsie* Tony winner Santino Fontana stars as Harry Bogen, an eager-beaver shipping clerk in 1937 New York City whose ambition is rivaled only by his unscrupulousness. This [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company) production marks the first revival of the 1962 musical in 30 years and is a bit of a family affair. Revisions to Jerome Weidman’s original book, based on his novel, are by his son, John Weidman. Songs are by Harold Rome.

They're hitting the dance floor! The new Broadway musical [*How to Dance in Ohio*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32763-how-to-dance-in-ohio-tickets) has set its complete Broadway cast ahead of its first performance on November 15. Opening night is December 10.

*How to Dance in Ohio* is a musical adaptation of the same-named documentary by Alexandra Shiva. The show follows a group of autistic young adults who come of age and experience newfound love, stress, confidence, and change as they prepare for a formal dance at their group counseling center.

The show comes to Broadway's [Belasco Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/belasco-theatre) after a 2022 world premiere in Syracuse, with multiple cast members returning.

## Who is in the *How to Dance in Ohio* Broadway cast?

Newly announced *How to Dance in Ohio* cast members include Caesar Samayoa as psychologist Dr. Emilio Amigo, Cristina Sastre as Ashley Amigo, and ensemble members Jean Christian Barry, Collin Hancock, Hunter Hollingsworth, Marina Jansen, Ayanna Thomas, and Marina Pires.

They join seven [previously announced cast members](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/new-musical-how-to-dance-in-ohio-to-premiere-on-broadway-this-fall) making their Broadway debuts: Desmond Luis Edwards as Remy, Amelia Fei (Yi-Hsuan Fei) as Caroline, Madison Kopec as Marideth, Liam Pearce as Drew, Imani Russell as Mel, Conor Tague as Tommy, and Ashley Wool as Jessica. All are autistic actors reprising their roles from Syracuse as the autistic adults in the show.

Other previously announced cast members include Haven Burton as Terry, Darlesia Cearcy as Johanna, Carlos L Encinias, Nick Gaswirth, Melina Kalomas, and Martín Solá.

How to Dance in Ohio on Broadway

The new musical, based on Alexandra Shiva's Peabody Award-winning documentary about autistic adults, begins performances at the Belasco Theatre in November.

Their name is Lancelot! Taran Killam and Alex Brightman join the cast of the upcoming [*Spamalot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33129-spamalot-tickets) Broadway revival, playing at the [St. James Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre) from October 31. Opening night is November 16.

Killam returns to Broadway after playing King George III in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2017. He is better known, however, for his onscreen comedy performances on *madTV* and *Saturday Night Live*, in addition to multiple sitcoms. He will play Lancelot through January 7 only.

Brightman will step into the role from January 9. He is currently starring as Richard Dreyfuss in [*The Shark Is Broken*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28737-the-shark-is-broken-tickets) on Broadway, and he is also known for leading the Broadway musical adaptations of *Beetlejuice* and *School of Rock*. Brightman also played Lancelot at the Kennedy Center, where this *Spamalot* revival production premiered earlier this year under director/choreographer Josh Rhodes.

Ease on down to Broadway! A revival of [*The Wiz*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27115-the-wiz-tickets) will begin performances this spring at the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre). The first performance is March 29, and opening night is April 17.

The announcement of the New York production comes as *The Wiz* opened its pre-Broadway national tour in Baltimore, Maryland — where the Tony Award-winning original 1975 production premiered — last night.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black retelling of *The Wizard of Oz*, infusing it with jazz, pop, ballet, and Black cultural influences. The show features a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls and others, including Luther Vandross. The 2023 revival features additional material by Amber Ruffin, also represented on Broadway with *Some Like It Hot*.

Schele Williams directs the 2023 production, which features choreography by JaQuel Knight, scenic design by Hannah Beachler; costume design by Sharen Davis; lighting design by Ryan J. O’Gara; sound design by Jon Weston; projection design by Daniel Brodie; wig design by Charles LaPointe; makeup design by Kirk Cambridge-Del Pesche; music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert; vocal and music arrangements by Allen René Louis; and dance music arrangements by Adam Blackstone.

As [previously announced](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/complete-cast-set-for-broadway-bound-the-wiz-revival), the Broadway cast of *The Wiz* stars [Wayne Brady](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/wayne-brady) as The Wiz alongside Nichelle Lewis as Dorothy, Deborah Cox as Glinda, Melody A. Betts as Aunt Em and Evillene, Kyle Ramar Freeman as the Lion, Phillip Johnson Richardson as the Tinman, and Avery Wilson as the Scarecrow.

The ensemble includes Maya Bowles, Shayla Alayre Caldwell, Jay Copeland, Allyson Kaye Daniel, Judith Franklin, Michael Samarie George, Collin Heyward, Amber Jackson, Olivia Jackson, Christina Jones, Polanco Jones, Kolby Kindle, Mariah Lyttle, Kareem Marsh, Anthony Murphy, Cristina Rae, Matthew Sims Jr, Avilon Trust Tate, Keenan D. Washington, and Timothy Wilson.

Wayne Brady will star in the latest revival of the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical, which just launched a national tour prior to its New York opening.

The career paths of Josh Gad and [Andrew Rannells](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-rannells) happily keep on colliding – and paralleling. Right now, they’re at the [James Earl Jones Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/james-earl-jones-theatre) in [*Gutenberg! The Musical!*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/31399-gutenberg-the-musical-tickets), a show with two actors and just as many exclamation points. The comic duo play musical theatre composers writing a show about the inventor of the printing press.

Out there? Sure. Then again, the story of misbegotten Mormon missionaries in Uganda is also wacky. That’s what the long-running, Tony Award-winning musical [*The Book of Mormon*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/127-the-book-of-mormon-tickets), in which Gad and Rannells first performed together, is about.

## 2005 and 2006: Broadway debuts

In January 2005, Rannells took over as high school student Fender in *Hairspray*. Like a ’60s beehive hairdo, the actor ascended high to the lead role of teenage heartthrob Link Larkin. Rannells has stepped into key roles in other Broadway shows including Bob Gaudio in *Jersey Boys*, the title role in *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, and King George in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets). 

A year later, in January 2006, the musical *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* introduced Gad to Broadway audiences. He took over the role of allergy-prone William Barfee, a kid who uses his “magic foot” to write out words before spelling them.

## 2011: *The Book of Mormon*

In 2011, Rannells and Gad landed the lead roles in the irreverent, sometimes profane musical by Robert Lopez (*Frozen, Avenue Q*) and *South Park* creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Rannells and Gad starred as Elders Price and Cunningham: Mormon missionaries in Uganda who are young, eager, in over their head, and making things up as they go along. Both got Best Actor Tony nominations for the still-running hit at the [Eugene O’Neill Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/eugene-o-neill-theatre).

## 2006 and 2016: The William Finn connection

Gad belted the kicky tune “Magic Foot” by William Finn in his Broadway debut in *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*. Rannells earned his second Tony nomination – Best Actor in a Supporting Role, as the ailing Whizzer – in the 2016 revival of *Falsettos*, a show with music, lyrics, and a book by Finn.

## 2013 and 2016: The Disney connection

Beyond the stage, Disney is common ground for the pair. For episodes of the animated TV series *Sofia the First*, Rannells voiced Morris, a goblin. Meanwhile, Gad voiced Olaf, the fan-fave snowman in the *Frozen* film franchise.

## 2023: *Gutenberg! The Musical!*

As Bud and Doug in this musical by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the actors wear a lot of hats – and that’s not a metaphor. They play the authors of a show about Johannes Gutenberg, which they pitch to potential investors with the means to finance the project. They act out the show playing characters whose names are on baseball caps.

### Ghost Stories: A Mysterious, Macabre Interactive Tour at the Met

This tour focuses on works of art that depict all sorts of scary creatures from various cultures and time periods.
