A modern comedy, *Art* follows three friends whose friendship is tested when one of them, Serge (Neil Patrick Harris), buys an expensive painting that Marc (Bobby Cannavale) can't stand. Their third friend, Yvan (James Corden), is stuck in the middle, seeing each friend's point of view. The original Broadway production had a similarly A-list cast when it first ran in New York in 1998 — that original production starred Alan Alda, Victor Garber, and Alfred Molina, who received a Tony Award nomination for his performance.

“Ever since I first saw the original production, it has been etched into my mind as a hysterical and moving portrayal of friendship, compromise, and the power of art to change perspectives," producer Michael Shulman said in a statement. 

With lots of laughs and deliberations on art, Yasmina Reza's play asks how much will you give for a painting, and how much will you give for your friends?

## What to watch for
- Scott Ellis is one of theatre's most Tony-nominated directors, with nominations for revivals that include *She Loves Me, You Can't Take it With You*, and more.
- Bobby Cannavale won an Emmy for his work on *Will & Grace*, and was last seen on stage in *Here We Are*, the final musical written by the late Stephen Sondheim.
- For this show, James Corden returns to Broadway for the first time in 13 years; he won a Tony for *One Man, Two Guvnors* in 2012.

*Art* on Broadway follows three friends, Serge, Marc and Yvan. Serge (Harris) buys an expensive painting — an all-white painting with even fainter white lines. Marc (Cannavale) can't stand the "painting," which leaves Yvan (Cordon) stuck in the middle. Intelligent debates about art, and silly ones about friendship, ensue, leaving the friends more confused than they were before the purchase.

That original Broadway production had a similarly star-studded cast in 1998: Alan Alda, Victor Garber, and Alfred Molina, who was Tony-nominated for his performance. Now, after taking home the Tony Award for Best Play, the play returns to Broadway.

It also marks Corden's return to Broadway for the first time in 13 years after winning a Tony Award for *One Man, Two Guvnors*. Harris is also a Broadway alum, winning a Tony Award for *Hedwig and the Angry Inch* (plus multiple Emmys for hosting the Tonys). Robert "Bobby" Cannavale was born on May 3, 1970 in Union City, New Jersey, and is known for his recurring television roles on shows such as Third Watch,&nbsp;Boardwalk Empire,&nbsp;Will &amp; Grace,&nbsp;Vinyl,&nbsp;Mr. Robot,&nbsp;and Nurse Jackie. He is a two-time Emmy Award winner and a two-time Tony Award nominee.

He attended&nbsp;St. Michael's Catholic School, where he became an altar boy, member of the choir, and member of school productions of&nbsp;The Music Man&nbsp;and&nbsp;Guys and Dolls. After a brief stint in Puerto Rico, he moved to Margate, Florida and attended Coconut Creek High School. After graduation, he returned to New Jersey in the hopes of launching a professional career in acting.

Following a handful of small parts during the late 1990s in films such as Night Falls on Manhattan&nbsp;(1996) and The Bone Collector&nbsp;(1999), his big break came after securing the role of Bobby Caffey for two seasons of NBC's Third Watch,&nbsp;appearing in a total of 38 episodes from 1999 to 2001. His next notable roles were&nbsp;Wilson Jade&nbsp;on Fox's&nbsp;Ally McBeal&nbsp;in 2002, and&nbsp;Joe Oramas in The Station Agent&nbsp;and&nbsp;Chato Cadena in NBC's Kingpin&nbsp;in 2003. Then, from 2004 to 2006, he played Vince D'Angelo on the hit series Will &amp; Grace,&nbsp;winning his first Emmy Award in 2005. In the next few years, he appeared in films such as Romance &amp; Cigarettes,&nbsp;Snakes on a Plane,&nbsp;and The Take&nbsp;and in TV shows such as ABC's Cupid&nbsp;and CBS's&nbsp;Cold Case&nbsp;until&nbsp;2009.

In 2012 and 2013, Cannavale enjoyed great success with his recurring TV role&nbsp;as&nbsp;Dr. Mike Cruz on Showtime's Nurse Jackie,&nbsp;earning two more Emmy Award nominations, as well as his role as&nbsp;Gyp Rosetti on HBO's Boardwalk Empire,&nbsp;which resulted in his second Emmy Award win in 2013. Since then, he has appeared in Blue Jasmine&nbsp;(2013), Annie&nbsp;(2014), Spy&nbsp;(2015) and Marvel's Ant-Man&nbsp;(2015). Mr. Cannavale made his Off-Broadway debut as an understudy in the 1998 Roundabout Theatre Company production of&nbsp;A Flea in Her Ear. He went on to appear in <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater">The Public Theater's</a> 2003 production of&nbsp;Fucking A&nbsp;and The New Group's 2005 production of Hurlyburly&nbsp;before finally making his Broadway debut as Dennis in&nbsp;Mauritius&nbsp;in the fall of 2007, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Play&nbsp;in 2008. In the summer of 2010, he starred as Morton in the Second Stage Theater production of Trust. He returned to Broadway in the spring of 2011 to star as&nbsp;Jackie in&nbsp;The Motherfucker with the Hat, earning his second Tony Award nomination, this time for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play,&nbsp;and winning his first Drama Desk Award. In the fall of 2012, he starred as&nbsp;Richard Roma in the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross&nbsp;and would return to Broadway just a few months later, in spring 2013, to star as&nbsp;Charlie Castle in a Broadway revival of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/the-big-knife">The Big Knife</a>. Corden was last seen on Broadway in 2012, when he starred as Francis Henshall in *One Man, Two Guvnors* and won the Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in a Play. He also starred in the 2004 revival of Alan Bennett's *The History Boys*, both in the West End and on Broadway.

Corden is best known, however, as the host of the six-time Emmy-winning *The Late Late Show with James Corden* from 2015-23, becoming popular for the segment "Carpool Karaoke." Corden's other screen credits include the BBC sitcom *Gavin & Stacey* in 2007, which he co-wrote and starred in, and movie musicals such as *Into the Woods* (2014) and *Cats* (2019). Corden has also hosted the Tony Awards twice, in 2016 and 2019, when he earned an Emmy Award.

The Music Box Theatre is conveniently located at 239 West 45th Street. By Subway, you can take N, Q, R, or W to 49th Street and walk down, A, C, or E to 42nd Street and walk up, or 1, 2, or 3 to Times Square 42nd Street. Multiple bus routes also stop nearby. If driving, there numerous parking garages in and around Times Square. It's a bustling area, so allow extra time for traffic.

Music Box Theatre

The Music Box Theatre was built in 1921 by theatrical producer Sam H. Harris to house Irving Berlin's musical revue *The Music Box*, written specifically for the venue. The first play to go up at the venue was 1925's *Cradle Snatchers*, and, ironically, the theatre has historically hosted more straight plays than musicals.

The Shubert Organization began acquiring shares in the Music Box Theatre from Harris in the 1920s. When Harris died in 1941, his wife sold half the shares in the theatre to the Shuberts, and half to Berlin.

In 2007, the Shubert Organization became the sole owners of the theatre. The Music Box Theatre's facade and interior are New York City landmarks.

## How to get to the Music Box Theatre on Broadway

The Music Box Theatre is closest to the 42nd Street - Port Authority subway stop on the A, C, and E lines. The nearest bus stops are 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines; 7th Ave/W. 44th St. on the M104 line; and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS line.

J.M. Barrie’s beloved children’s story *Peter Pan* offers straight-shooting directions to the fictional island of Neverland: Fly toward the “second star to the right and straight on ‘til morning. ” In [*Peter Pan Goes Wrong*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27336-peter-pan-goes-wrong-tickets), the latest Broadway production from Mischief Theatre, the journey to Neverland is anything but smooth. The comedy follows the Cornley University Drama Society’s botched attempt to stage the classic adventure tale, and there are flying accidents, forgotten lines, falling set pieces, and missing props, among other disasters.

Mischief first bowed on Broadway in 2017 with [*The Play That Goes Wrong*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14790-the-play-that-goes-wrong-tickets), a play-within-a-play following the Cornley troupe’s calamitous staging of a murder mystery. Similarly, their *Peter Pan* is rife with slapstick humor and running gags. But *Peter Pan Goes Wrong* benefits from the familiar framing of a classic story: There is anticipatory laughter in waiting to see just how the amateur company will hoist actors in the air and fashion a crocodile. (The answers: poorly, and with an actor in a childish onesie on a rolling board.)

The merriment and mishaps begin before the curtain rises as *Peter Pan*’s excitedly nervous director Chris Bean (Henry Shields) welcomes audience members. He trips and tumbles down the aisle of the [Ethel Barrymore Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/barrymore-theatre), kickstarting the rolling laughter. The setup continues with an onstage pre-show speech, in which Bean and assistant director Robert Grove (Henry Lewis) recall the company’s past failures, including a production titled *Jack and the Bean*. (There was no budget for a full beanstalk.)

But there’s hope that *Peter Pan* — which received a sizable donation from a company member’s father — will be a feather in the troupe’s cap. The directors warn the audience that the actor playing John Darling (Jonathan Sayer) does not know a single line and that the Lost Boy Tootles (Ellie Morris) has extreme stage fright. These are the least of their worries, though.

The play’s narrator, Francis Beaumont (Neil Patrick Harris, guest-starring through April 30), enters the stage on a comically slow-rolling throne with a burst of confetti to begin. Act 1 is a tight sequence of hilarity. One of the best laughs is prompted by John Darling sporting headphones so the stage crew can feed lines from backstage. Before each deadpan line reading, the headset emits a radio crackle. (It’s one of the running gags that actually gets funnier throughout, especially in Act 2, when the transmitter begins to pick up television commercials and Uber notifications.) 

Anne Twilloil (Nancy Zamit) undergoes split-second quick changes to transform from Mary Darling in a purple evening gown to the Darling family’s maid in a dowdy uniform. It is physical comedy at its best. Stacker also shines, literally, as the cavorting Tinker Bell in a light-up tutu (costumes are by Roberto Surace). 

The play continues beyond the Darling’s home to showcase an impressive set —thanks, no doubt, to the company’s inflated production budget. Scenic designer Simon Scullion’s wondrous spinning set, complete with a towering Big Ben and the Neverland Jungle, is unworthy of the amateurs. It also gets completely ruined by the careless actors and crew members — and several technical difficulties, including an electrical fire.

In Act 2, offstage showmances and creative conflicts creep on stage, worsening the characters' performances in *Peter Pan*. Some of the production’s repeat gags also lose steam by the time Peter, Wendy, John, and Michael greet the Lost Boys in Neverland. The energy wanes a bit, but the audience participation ramps up with ad-libbed scenes and audience callouts. 

Scenes with Captain Hook (also Shields) elicited lots of boos and jeers, especially from kids in attendance. Hook claps back, asking the crowd if [Josh Groban](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/josh-groban) has to endure audible criticism as [Sweeney Todd](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26216-sweeney-todd-on-broadway-tickets). In another scene, Harris, playing Cecco the pirate, entertains with a participatory magic trick to divert attention from yet another onstage injury. Children (and children at heart) willing to ride the giggle train will enjoy this production the most. 

Under the swift direction of Adam Meggido, the rollicking cast members deliver lines perfectly out of order and miss stage blocking to comic effect. In many ways, it is more challenging to waywardly fly on a harness and haphazardly roller skate upstage than to do it correctly and safely. 

Perhaps the show’s biggest stars, though, are the actual stage managers (led by production stage manager Adam John Hunter) who employ hundreds of ill-timed sound cues (sound design by Ella Wahlström) and operate a decentered spotlight (lighting design by Matthew Haskins). 

This critic gives it four stars and advises you to go straight on to the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.

Considering that it’s the final musical by the renowned composer-lyricist who [died in 2021](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/stephen-sondheim-remembrance), Stephen Sondheim’s [*Here We Are*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28147-here-we-are-tickets) was guaranteed to jolt. Although the show emerges as modestly engaging, it adds a zap of electricity to the theatre season, thanks to inspired work by a [dream cast](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/meet-the-all-star-cast-of-here-we-are-off-broadway) and ace designers who serve up a slim slice of surrealism under Joe Mantello's ([*Wicked*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/1-wicked-musical-tickets)) direction.

In development for a decade and written with David Ives (*Venus in Fur*), the two-hour two-act is inspired by two movies by Spanish Mexican filmmaker Luis Buñuel: *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie* and *The Exterminating Angel*. The movies present spiky send-ups of the rich and privileged whose dining plans go awry.

Rachel Bay Jones and [Bobby Cannavale](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/bobby-cannavale) play Marianne and Leo Brink, a posh, pampered pair. Claudia and Paul Zimmer (Amber Gray and Jeremy Shamos) arrive at Brinks’ home mistakenly thinking they have a brunch date there. 

Accompanied by Marianne’s street-smart sister, Fritz (Micaela Diamond), and Raffael ([Steven Pasquale](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/steven-pasquale)), an oversexed ambassador, they head out and look for a place to eat. Subplots about infidelity, a sexy soldier (Jin Ha), an aimless bishop ([David Hyde Pierce](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/david-hyde-pierce)), a cocaine cartel, and a revolution bubble up. Lending ace support are Francois Battiste as a colonel and the multitasking Denis O’Hare and Tracie Bennett. 

Sondheim and Ives follow the bones of the movies and make detours in their gentle adaptation. Act 1 takes a traditional musical approach to the story. Act 2, in which everybody ends up in a room they can’t leave, is largely absent of music, save for a song at the start and a later reprise or two. Even a piano on stage goes silent.

David Zinn’s minimal first-act set is all about clean, polished white surfaces and colorful set pieces that represent various restaurants, while Act 2 conjures an ornate room. It’s all good enough to eat. Zinn’s costumes – from a silky peignoir to combat boots – are character-defining. Natasha Katz bathes it all in dramatic lighting.

In both halves of the theatrical hybrid, Ives’s script packs the verbal dexterity that’s become his hallmark. “We do expect a little latte later, but we haven’t got a lotta latte now,” says a waiter. 

Sondheim, meanwhile, doesn’t offer up his signature tongue-twisting lyrics, but in just a note or two, melodies announce themselves as hailing from the same [creator](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/a-history-of-stephen-sondheim-musicals-on-broadway-and-beyond) of [*Sweeney Todd*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26216-sweeney-todd-on-broadway-tickets) and *Into the Woods*. Incidental songs pop up about a perfect day, the end of the world, and a rudderless priest. The score is pretty and moody — no more, no less.

So what does it all mean? *Here We Are* doubles down on a message. “Life’s a tit! Suck it up!” says Raffael early on. Later, the Bishop puts it in other words: “Be here. Until we’re not.” Groundbreaking? No. But it’s food for thought.
