Rockwell is best known for originating the role of Karen Smith in the *Mean Girls* Broadway musical, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination. Additional Broadway musical credits include *Hair, Legally Blonde, Rock of Ages*, and *Bring It On.*

In *Heathers*, she will temporarily replace current star [Kerry Butler](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/kerry-butler) as she departs to star in [*Bat Boy: The Musical*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/44535-bat-boy) at New York City Center. Butler will return to *Heathers* on November 12.

“It makes total sense to me — I’ve survived high school multiple times, so I feel totally qualified to graduate to staff!” said Rockwell in a statement, referring to her past theatre credits. “I’m thrilled to join *Heathers* and keep Kerry’s desk warm for her. She’s an icon!”

Adapted by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe from Michael Lehmann's 1988 film, *Heathers* follows high school nobody Veronica as her world turns upside down: first by joining the popular Heathers clique and then by falling for the school's new bad boy, who shows her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it's murder being a somebody.

*Heathers* is a dark musical comedy that’s, in wonderful and campy ways, partly a satire of high school life. This comes as no surprise looking at the creators, Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, who have created high-octane hits like *Legally Blonde, Bat Boy*, and *Reefer Madness*. Like those shows, *Heathers* showcases young characters contending with the pains of adolescence and growing up. The musical, like the movie, does not shy away from heavier material: suicide, mental health, body image issues, and drug use are all addressed. 

Nonetheless, there are many laughs along the way — and hit songs like “Seventeen,” “Lifeboat,” and “Freeze Your Brain.”. A precursor to the film *Mean Girls* (and its subsequent stage show), *Heathers* was ahead of its time as a late-80s film that continues to resonate with young audiences today. London Theatre raved, “This musical has the power to tap into all of the tempestuous emotions associated with being a teenager.”

The *Heathers* musical first premiered in 2013 in Los Angeles before running off Broadway the following year. This new production originated in 2018 in London's West End before going on to have two national tours and an encore engagement in the West End.

## What to watch for

- One line from the movie — "I don't patronize bunny rabbits" — was cut from the musical until Winona Ryder saw the show in L.A. and asked that it be added back in. It's remained in every major production since!
- One character, Ms. Fleming, ad-libs a section of the song "Shine a Light" at every performance, and it's different every night.
- In various scenes, the ensemble appears in white robes and 3-D glasses, a direct nod to the costuming in a key scene from the movie.
- One scene takes place in a cow pasture dubbed "Lehmann's Farm," a nod to *Heathers* film director Michael Lehmann.
- The original film starred Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, and Penelope Milford.

Murphy wrote the book and lyrics for *Reefer Madness*, and O’Keefe wrote the music and lyrics for *Legally Blonde*.

Despite those energetic musicals, *Heathers* does deal with darker themes, including body image issues, suicide, bullying, and more. However, such issues are what make the musical popular amongst a younger generation.

Located beneath the Worldwide Plaza between Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen, New World Stages is a modern performing arts complex with five theatres for Off-Broadway productions.

The building was constructed in 1994 on the site of the third Madison Square Garden. It first opened as a Loews Cineplex Entertainment multiplex cinema, which closed in 2001.

For the next three years, the building underwent substantial renovations and finally reopened as Dodger Stages in 2004, designed by architects Beyer, Blinder, and Belle. The theatre complex was renamed New World Stages on March 16, 2006, and Stage Entertainment assumed sole ownership of the property. The Shubert Organization took over ownership and operation on November 17, 2017.

All five spaces have between 100 and 500 seats, officially deeming New World Stages an Off-Broadway venue. Stage 1 and Stage 3 are the largest theatres in the complex with 499 seats. Stages 2 and 4 offer a 350-seat capacity. Stage 5 is the smallest venue with 199 seats. The Green Room is the official bar and lounge for New World Stages, but it can also be a performance space.

New World Stages is closest to the 50th St. subway stop on the C and E lines. The nearest bus stop is 9 Av./W 50 St. on the M11 line.

## Where is *The Play That Goes Wrong* playing?

*The Play That Goes Wrong* is at New World Stages' Stage 4. The comedy play made its Broadway debut in 2017, and after running there for two years, it transferred off Broadway.

Previous productions that enjoyed long Off-Broadway runs at New World Stages after closing on Broadway are *Jersey Boys* and *Avenue Q*.

No one is more surprised than I!&nbsp;<a href="/show/mean-girls">Mean Girls</a>—a big, noisy musical (not my thing), based on a hit teen movie (not my thing since...well, never), awash in stereotypes like the dumb girl, the hot boy, the powerful high-school clique, and the outsider desperate to belong—turns out to be one of those feel-good nights on Broadway when you unabashedly jump to your feet applauding because you've had&nbsp;such&nbsp;a good time.Of course it comes down to the talent— on the boards to be sure, but, more importantly, at the production table.&nbsp;Tina Fey wrote the book based on her screenplay for the film.&nbsp;Add to that, Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin, combined on music and lyrics respectively.&nbsp;And then Casey Nicholaw (<a href="/show/the-book-of-mormon">Book of Mormon</a>, Something Rotten) directs and choreographs. What could go wrong?&nbsp;Nothing goes wrong!The plot is the same as in the film — home-schooled Cady Heron transfers from an African savanna to a suburban Illinois high school.&nbsp;Here the predators are a ruthless trio of mean girls who wish to make her over in their image. Cady straddles the in-and-out group worlds you will recognize if you went to high school.&nbsp;Fey has updated with plenty of current references.&nbsp;It's hard to miss the practiced hand of this remarkable comic writer.&nbsp;The laugh lines are perfectly paced through the script.Production is impressive.&nbsp;Scott Pask's set design combines seamlessly with Kenneth Posner's lighting, Ross &amp; Young's video design and Brian Ronan's sound.&nbsp;The coordination is very ambitious and precise.&nbsp;The scene-changes are remarkable.&nbsp;That said, everything moves so fast that, if you pause to admire a quick-center-stage costume change, you miss something wonderful coming on its heels.&nbsp;Some transitions startle you into the next moment. Expect a visually stimulating show with a big "wow" factor!The dancing—and there's a lot of it—is exuberant.&nbsp;Wearing his choreographer's cap, Nicholaw stages broad, wide production numbers that capture that explosive adolescent energy. There is even a tap number!&nbsp;All the songs are new, and some are especially compelling. As Cady sizes up Regina, the leader of the mean girls, she sings "Apex Predator," a clever comparison between the predators of the savannah and the character of Regina.Erika Henningsen (Cady), Taylor Louderman (Regina), Ashley Park (Gretchen), and Kate Rockwell (Karen)—all have that remarkable amalgam: each is an actor who moves well and sings like a goddess.&nbsp;In fact, all of the soloists have strong, trained voices.&nbsp;I think they are over-miked but, even with that, the sound is true.Barrett Wilbert Weed (Janis) and Grey Henson (Damian), are our hosts, keeping the story on track as they sometimes speak directly to the audience, and sometimes play their parts as the school's outsiders. Musicals often give short shrift to character development, but these two come through as quite defined.
