Kuhoo Verma and more to join main cast of 'Heathers' off Broadway

The award-winning stage and screen star will lead the hit musical from December, while two additional performers will join the show temporarily in the coming weeks.

Welcome to Westerberg High! Kuhoo Verma, Jodie Steele, and Kiara Michelle Lee will join the main cast of Heathers The Musical off Broadway at New World Stages this fall.

Verma will assume the lead role of Veronica Sawyer from December 11. She replaces current star Lorna Courtney, who departs the show on December 8 to star in The Greatest Showman in London. Verma is known for starring in the Hulu film Plan B and for her Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award-winning performance in Octet off Broadway.

Two other current Heathers cast members — McKenzie Kurtz and Olivia Hardy — will take temporary leaves of absence. Kurtz is out from now until mid-November, and Steele will assume the role of Heather Chandler starting with the October 25 evening performance. Steele previously originated the role of Chandler in Heathers's 2018 U.K. premiere.

Hardy is out from November 5 until early December. Lee, a current Heathers ensemble member and understudy for Hardy's role of Heather Duke, will play Duke full-time in Hardy's absence.

Exact return dates for Kurtz and Hardy have yet to be announced. Additionally, on November 6, Thalia Atallah will join the cast in Lee's current ensemble role of Young Republicanette.

Continuing in the main Heathers cast are Casey Likes as Jason “J.D.” Dean, Elizabeth Teeter as Heather McNamara, Kate Rockwell as Ms. Fleming/Veronica’s Mom (through November 10; Kerry Butler returns November 12), Erin Morton as Martha Dunnstock, Xavier McKinnon as Ram Sweeney, Cade Ostermeyer as Kurt Kelly, Ben Davis as Ram’s Dad/Big Bud Dean/Coach Ripper, and Cameron Loyal as Kurt’s Dad/Veronica’s Dad/Principal Gowan.

Adapted from the cult classic movie, Heathers follows high school nobody Veronica Sawyer as her world turns upside down — first as she joins the revered Heathers clique, and then as she falls for bad boy J.D., who shows her it can be murder to be popular.
