The titular Hadestown isn’t hell itself, but Hades's soulless factory, which is close enough. When Orpheus, talented enough to charm anyone with a song, descends there, he comes face to face with the ruler of the underworld. Hades has tricked his underlings into building a wall to keep the world out, and his servants — and Persephone — in. Guiding him along with advice, warnings of danger, and haunting vocals are the messenger god Hermes and the three Fates.

*Hadestown* has gone on a long and winding journey of its own. The show began in writer Anaïs Mitchell’s home state of Vermont, where she staged the first two productions in 2006 and launched a Vermont-Massachusetts tour of the show in 2007. A concept album followed in 2010, preserving the music when the show’s future was unknown.

Enter Rachel Chavkin, who Mitchell reached out to in 2012 after seeing an early production of the musical *Natasha, Pierre, & The Great Comet of 1812* directed by Chavkin. Chavkin helped Mitchell rework and refine *Hadestown*’s songs and book for the stage, and went on to direct the subsequent productions. 

*Hadestown* premiered in 2016 at New York Theatre Workshop, and the show went on to play in Edmonton, Canada in 2017 and at the National Theatre in London in 2019.

Finally, *Hadestown* was ready to heat up Broadway, led again by Chavkin, premiering in 2019 and earning 14 Tony nominations that year. *Hadestown* won eight, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical for Chavkin, and Best Original Score for Mitchell.

## What to watch for

- Since the *Hadestown* concept album, Mitchell has doubled the show’s amount of music. The concept album has 20 songs, and the Broadway cast album has 40.
- *Hadestown* is one of many popular musicals to start as a concept album — others include *The Who's Tommy*, *American Idiot*, and *Jesus Christ Superstar*.
- *Hadestown* has since added to its collection of albums: there’s a Broadway cast recording, a live Off-Broadway cast recording, and an EP titled *Why We Build The Wall*, with selections from the Off-Broadway album. Two songs that would eventually appear in *Hadestown* — "Hades & Persephone" and an early version of "How Long?" — are also included in Mitchell’s 2007 folk album *The Brightness*.
- Mitchell is also a prolific songwriter with nine total albums to her name, including an eponymous album, the folksy *Hymns for the Exiled*, and *Young Man in America*, which has a similar New Orleans jazz sound as *Hadestown*’s music.
- Since its Off-Broadway production, the setting of the show has been changed from an outdoor setting — the sacred ground near an old tree — to an indoor one, an old Southern communion hall.
- Greek mythology isn’t the only spiritual influence seen in *Hadestown* on Broadway. The character of Hermes is based in part on the Greek god, but also on Hoodoo and other African spiritual traditions.
- There are lots of small references to characters and events from Greek mythology in the show’s lyrics. For example, the lyric “See how the vipers and vultures surround you / And they’ll take you down” is a reference to how, in the original myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, she is killed by a snake.

The show has journeyed far and wide and, since 2019, Hadestown on Broadway has transformed the Walter Kerr Theatre into the jazzy, seductive underworld. The stage musical began its life in the mind of celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, who turned her idea into a 2010 folk opera concept album. However, songs from the album were performed in her native state of Vermont several times back in 2006 and 2007 as a kind of "D.I.Y. theatre project," as the singer herself described it.

Its current form began to take shape after Mitchell approached Tony Award-nominated director Rachel Chavkin in 2012 following a visit to Chavkin's groundbreaking production of the immersive musical Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. Together, the pair developed the stage musical, with Mitchell adding 15 new songs and additional dialogue to fill the gaps in the story line and allow deeper characterizations.

Finally, Hadestown was ready to stage its world premiere in May 2016 at New York Theatre Workshop off Broadway, and huge critical acclaim and audience reactions got the run extended to the end of July 2016. The production was also rewarded with a Drama Desk nomination in the category of Outstanding Musical in 2017, along with seven Lucille Lortel Award nominations.

Hadestown made two more stops on its journey to Broadway, with a Canadian premiere at Edmonton's Citadel Theatre in November 2017 and a U.K. premiere at London's National Theatre the following year. The Broadway transfer was officially confirmed during that run, and Hadestown in New York won eight Tony Awards out of 14 nominations, including Best Musical.

This "Road to Hell" may have been a long and winding one that has taken Mitchell and Chavkin over a decade to walk, but the theatrical outcome is heavenly.

## What is *Hadestown* about?

The Hadestown musical is a genre-defying adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, now in a Depression-era-inspired setting and set to jazz and folk music. The pair's romance gets thwarted when Eurydice, seeing no other options for survival, agrees to work for underworld god Hades in his soulless factory. Orpheus undertakes a dangerous journey to rescue her. Their story is intertwined with the myth of Hades and his own wife, Persephone, and other mythic figures, like the god Hermes and the Fates, also make appearances.

Going to hell has never been as much fun as seeing a performance of Anaïs Mitchell's musical <a href="/show/hadestown">Hadestown</a>, now playing at the <a href="/theatres/walter-kerr-theatre">Walter Kerr Theatre</a>.&nbsp;And don't let its origins in Greek mythology scare you off because there's a built-in narrator in the form of the god Hermes (André De Shields) whose job was to guide souls into the afterlife.&nbsp;In Hadestown, his first task is to introduce all the characters in a rollicking number "Road to Hell."Mitchell, the talented singer/songwriter who is responsible for the whole shebang, music, lyrics and book, has intertwined the myth of Orpheus (Reeve Carney), son of the God Apollo and muse Calliope and Eurydice (Eva Noblezada), wood nymph; with that of Hades (Patrick Page), god of the underworld and Persephone (Amber Gray), daughter of the god Zeus and goddess of the harvest Demeter.&nbsp;The story that unfolds in Hadestown is that Hades falls in lust with Persephone and abducts her to the underworld where they fall in love and marry.&nbsp;Demeter is so distraught she declares that there will be no more growth or harvest until Persephone returns.&nbsp;Zeus brokers a deal whereby Persephone spends 6 months out of the year above ground and 6 months out of the year below, thus creating the seasons. So, Persephone rides a train back and forth between the underworld known as Hadestown where she's the only living soul, and the world above.&nbsp;But Hades keeps shortening her time up above because he misses her.&nbsp;And the earth gets colder.Meanwhile, Orpheus is trying to write a song that will restore order to the seasons when he runs across Eurydice, with a little help from Hermes and The Fates (Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, Kay Trinidad), who is wandering around cold and hungry.&nbsp;She's initially unimpressed until he starts singing.&nbsp;In the only off note in the production, they fall in love (unfortunately no chemistry between the two - Reeve Carney is a little too much of a hesitant milquetoast to be a believable love interest for the determined and charming Eva Noblezada) and marry.&nbsp;Whereupon Orpheus immediately goes back to songwriting and neglects Eurydice.So, what's a poor, once again cold and hungry girl to do?&nbsp;Where does she go to get warm?&nbsp;You guessed it, Hadestown.&nbsp;Where Eurydice becomes one of the poor lost souls in the underworld, trapped behind the wall Hades has erected. And explains in the Act One finale "Why We Build The Wall" that brings down the house.&nbsp;If I didn't know that Mitchell wrote the score in 2010, I'd swear she wrote it within the last two years.I won't spoil the second act except to say that it's about Orpheus' trip to Hadestown to find Eurydice to try to rescue her.&nbsp;And that Michael Krass' costumes for the Chorus in the underworld are outstanding, as is the visually stunning dance number choreographed by David Neumann done with headlamps and swinging lights.&nbsp;And if the love story between Orpheus and Eurydice didn't smolder, Patrick Page and Amber Gray set the house on fire as Orpheus and Persephone. The Walter Kerr Theatre is a Broadway theatre located in the heart of New York City. Designed by Herbert J. Krapp for the Shubert Brothers, the Walter Kerr Theatre opened as the The Ritz Theatre in 1921. The venue functioned as a radio and television studio for ABC from 1943 to 1965. Ownership changed hands multiple times between the 1950s and 1970s, during which time the building operated as a traditional theatre and an adult movie cinema. The Ritz then housed the Robert F. Kennedy Theater for Children from 1973-76.

Jujamcyn Theaters took ownership in 1980 and, after renovations, reopened the theatre on March 5, 1990 under its new name in honor of the theatre critic Walter Kerr. The first production was August Wilson's *The Piano Lesson*. In 2021, Jujamcyn celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Walter Kerr Theatre.
