Hadestown producers said of the musical's reopening: ""For the past 15 months, 'spring will come again,' has become our mantra. Anaïs Mitchell's elegant lyric has gotten us through a year of profound change, soul searching, and more than a few sleepless nights. Now, as spring is in full bloom in New York, that mantra continues to show itself in wonderful ways."
Inspired by Anais Mitchell's 2010 concept album, Hadestown tells of two love stories. Orpheus and Eurydice wish to connect with each other in the underworld, while King Hade wants Persephone for themselves. Anais Mitchell worked on the musical adaptation of Hadestown , directed by Rachel Chavkin.
Casting for Hadestown is to be announced. When theatres closed in March 2020, the cast included Reeve Carney (as Orpheus), André De Shields (as Hermes), Amber Gray (as Persephone), Eva Noblezada (as Eurydice), and Patrick Page (as Hades).
Hadestown began previews at the Walter Kerr Theatre in March 2019, opening a month later. The musical won eight Tonys, including best musical and best original score. In a review for New York Theatre Guide, "Going to hell has never been as much fun as seeing a performance of Anaïs Mitchell's musical Hadestown... don't let its origins in Greek mythology scare you off because there's a built-in narrator in the form of the god Hermes (André De Shields) whose job was to guide souls into the afterlife."
Hadestown will also begin a national tour later this year, beginning in Greensville, SC in October.
Hadestown is at the Walter Kerr Theatre from September 2.
