February 2018 Highlights on Broadway and Beyond
Check out our guide to the biggest theatrical events of the month.
Spring is almost upon us and that means curtain up for a plethora of new shows on the Great White Way! In fact, some of these brand new productions are set to begin performances on Broadway this month, so, without any further ado, take a look at what's in store for theatre fans in the New York City area this February...
February 4
Your final chance to catch our #ShowOfTheWeek - Manhattan Theatre Club's U.S. premiere of The Children - is February 4 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Broadway! Olivier Award-winning playwright Lucy Kirkwood's topical drama is yet another example of Manhattan Theatre Club's ongoing efforts to present pieces of theatre that challenge us and showcase sensitive, urgent and, at times, uncomfortable issues on a mainstream platform. London's original cast of BAFTA Award winner Francesca Annis, Olivier Award nominee Ron Cook, and Olivier Award winner Deborah Findlay are placing themes of climate change, responsibility and sacrifice front and center in this thought-provoking and ultimately crushing drama.
The Children Tickets are available now for performances through to February 4, 2018.
February 11
Box office sales for the hit musical Waitress have burst through the roof of the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Broadway thanks to the star casting of two-time Grammy Award winner Jason Mraz as Dr. Pomatter and six-time Grammy Award nominee Sara Bareilles, who has returned to her own musical to reprise the leading role of Jenna. February 11 is your final chance to see the pair performing together on stage, as Mr. Mraz comes to the end of his limited engagement. So why not take a trip down to the theatre and sing out "You Matter to Me" to your favorite Waitress stars in person? (Ms. Bareilles continues through to March 11 in the production, with original cast member Drew Gehling reprising the role of Dr. Pomatter from February 13).
Waitress Tickets are available for performances through to December 23, 2018.
February 16
Get ready for "Cheeseburgers in Paradise," folks! The Jimmy Buffett jukebox musical Escape to Margaritaville begins previews at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway on February 16 (ahead of an official opening on March 15). Expect kettledrums, piña coladas and a host of Mr. Buffett's greatest hits such as "Margaritaville," "Why Don't We Get Drunk," "Son of a Son of a Sailor," "Volcano," "Grapefruit—Juicy Fruit," and "One Particular Harbor," when this cool, Caribbean-infused show rolls into town!
Escape to Margaritaville Tickets are avilable now for performances through to November 18, 2018.
February 22
- Mark your calendars, Disney fans! On February 22, the global phenomenon that is Frozen is set to take a (frost) bite out of the Big Apple, when preview performances begin at the St. James Theatre. With promising reviews from the pre-Broadway engagement in Denver, new songs from the Academy Award-winning songwriting team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and an extended book by the film's Oscar-winning screenwriter Jennifer Lee, fans will not only experience their favorite Frozen characters brought to life on stage by a talented group of Broadway stars, but they will also discover new depths to these characters and their relationships like never before. And from what we hear, Elsa's transformation into the Snow Queen towards the end of Act I will send shivers down the spine of even the most cynical of theatregoers. "For the First Time in Forever" we're gasping for some Disney magic!
Disney's Frozen Tickets are available now for performances through to December 30, 2018.
- February 22 also marks the official press night for the new cast of the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly! at the Shubert Theatre. New principals include two-time Tony Award-winning Broadway legend Bernadette Peters in the title role, four-time Tony Award nominee Victor Garber as Horace Vandergelder, and Olivier Award nominee Charlie Stemp as Barnaby Tucker, who have all been previewing since January 20. We can't wait to see how they all fare with the critics in this classic, much-loved revival.
Hello, Dolly! Tickets are available now for performances through to July 15, 2018.
February 23
One of London's most critically acclaimed productions last year was the National Theatre's revival of Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play Angels in America - A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. The production quickly became the fastest-selling show in the theatre's history, partly due to the shear legacy of the play and partly due to the phenomenal cast of actors gathered, including Tony & Academy Award nominee Andrew Garfield as Prior Walter, two-time Tony Award winner Nathan Lane as Roy Cohn, and Olivier Award winner Denise Gough as Harper Pitt. They are all reprising their respective roles for this Broadway transfer, which begins previews at the Neil Simon Theatre on February 23. An official opening is set for March 25.
Angels in America Tickets are available now for performances through to July 1, 2018.
February 25
February 25 is your final chance to get entertainingly schooled by Golden Globe & Tony Award nominee John Leguizamo as Latin History for Morons comes to the end of its Broadway run at Studio 54. Extended due to popular demand, Latin History is both an acting master class on how to hold an audience in the palm of your hand, as well as an unexpected insight into Mr. Leguizamo's family life and the trials and tribulations of parenthood. Simply put, you'd be a moron to miss this one!
Latin History for Morons Tickets are available now for performances through to February 25, 2018.
February 27
The long-overdue Broadway premiere of Edward Albee's 1994 Pulitzer Prize-winning play Three Tall Women begins previews on February 27 at the Golden Theatre and marks the first return to the Broadway stage of two-time Oscar winner and four-time Tony Award nominee Glenda Jackson in almost thirty years! She plays a woman in her 90s reminiscing about her life, achievements and regrets, and will be supported by Tony Award winner Laurie Metcalf, currently experiencing a lot of buzz thanks to her Oscar-nominated turn in "Lady Bird," who will portray the woman in her 50s, whilst Tony Award nominee Alison Pill will play her during her mid-20s. We think this has the makings of the surprise hit of the season!
Three Tall Women Tickets are available now for performances through to June 24, 2018.
February 28
Finally, previews begin on February 28 for the Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic musical Carousel at the Imperial Theatre. We can't wait to see Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller and two-time Tony Award nominee Joshua Henry's takes on the iconic roles of Julie Jordan and Billy Bigelow, and we are utterly desperate to experience opera sensation Renée Fleming's rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone"! Are you ready to take a ride on the carousel?
Carousel Tickets are avilable now for performances through to September 2, 2018.
So, that concludes our guide for our Broadway highlights of the month. And don't forget that February 14 is Valentine's Day and the perfect opportunity to spend a blissful night on the Great White Way with a loved one (and if Broadway is your loved one, then feel free to escape the lovefest and immerse yourself in a world of theatre again). Until next month...
