Sam Pinkleton to direct 50th-anniversary ‘Annie’ revival on Broadway

The Oh, Mary! Tony Award winner will stage the seven-time Tony Award-winning classic musical in fall 2027.

We think we’re gonna like it here! Sam Pinkleton will stage a Broadway revival of the beloved musical Annie in NYC in fall 2027, celebrating the 50th anniversary of its 1977 Broadway premiere.

The Tony Award-winning director of Oh, Mary! and The Rocky Horror Show named Annie as his favorite musical on Instagram in 2025, leading fans to speculate whether he’d soon stage the production himself.

“If you ask any of my closest friends what I love more than anything on the planet, everyone will have the same answer: Annie,” Pinkleton said in a statement today. “Annie is everything I love about New York City: gutsy, fearless, and funny as hell. It’s a perfectly constructed musical comedy that my collaborators and I will run toward with joy and abandon — with open hearts and total adoration for this legendary show that has made generations fall in love with musicals.”

Annie tells the story of a fearlessly optimistic orphan who, while waiting for her parents to retrieve her, finds a new family with a stern millionaire. The show features a book by Thomas Meehan and a score by Charles Strouse (music) and Martin Charnin (lyrics), including famous songs like "Tomorrow" and "It's the Hard Knock Life."

The original 1977 production won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and Annie was last revived on Broadway in 2012. A touring production, starring Whoopi Goldberg as Miss Hannigan, also briefly stopped in NYC in 2025.

Casting, additional creative team members, a venue, and exact dates for Pinkleton’s Annie have yet to be named.
