Each woman recites Shange's poems about survival, womanhood, racism, sisterhood, and more while also performing movement. Jackson, was the first musical writer to achieve that honor. His show is now also the recipient of <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/news-features/2022-tony-award-nominees-announced-a-strange-loop-leads" target="_blank">11 Tony Award nominations</a>, the most of any show in 2022.&nbsp;A Strange Loop&nbsp;won two Tonys, including Best Musical.A Strange Loop, inspired by Jackson's own life experiences, tells the story of a Black, gay young man named Usher who battles relentless self-loathing as he's trying to make it big in theatre with a musical about a Black, gay man writing a musical. It does take place, however, at the intermission of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/the-lion-king" target="_blank">The Lion King</a>&nbsp;on Broadway, where the lead character Usher works as (you guessed it) an usher. While working, his thoughts wander to the musical he's trying to write, and to his self-doubt that he'll be able to succeed in the industry as a fat, Black, queer man.Parts of the song echo classic musical theatre tunes of the past. "Intermission Song" opens with the various Thoughts calling Usher's name in a way that sounds like the characters who call out "Bobby! Bobby! Bobby baby, Bobby bubby!" in the opening song of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/company" target="_blank">Company</a>. And the many questions that are asked (and not answered) in the song, one right after the other — "How many minutes 'til the end of intermission? Is that how the show should open? Should there even be a show?" — echo "I Hope I Get It," the opening of&nbsp;A Chorus Line&nbsp;where the auditioners sing questions like "How many people does he need? How many boys, how many girls? Who am I anyway? Am I just my resume?" without getting answers.<h2>"Today"</h2>Jackson describes the meta nature of "Today" best on <a href="https://genius.com/A-strange-loop-cast-today-lyrics" target="_blank">Genius</a>: "'Today' was an early song that was written to be as much of an 'I want' song as made sense within the structure of the show. Usher is writing a musical called A Strange Loop. In that musical, there is a character named Usher writing a musical about a character named Usher who wants to change himself and break out of the stasis he's in. This song is a reflection of that desire." The song is as much a reflection of the character Usher is writing, as Usher himself.In the song, Usher sings about the everyday minutae of his life: going to work, meeting with his landlord, dealing with tourists, and the like. He's often interrupted by his thoughts, who cheerfully introduce themselves as things like "your daily dose of self-loathing" and "the supervisor of your sexual ambivalence" and pester him about investments, new writing projects, and his own feelings of inadequacy. This constant stream of debilitating thoughts is the very cycle he hopes to break from.

<h2>"We Wanna Know"</h2>"We Wanna Know" is a voicemail recording that Usher's mom leaves for him. All six Thoughts sing the song to show how big of a presence Usher's deeply religious mom has in his mind. "She" starts the call by asking how he's doing in New York but quickly pivots to guilt-tripping, reminding him how much money she spent on his college education and saying he should have a writing job by now. She ends the call by telling Usher he should write a "nice, clean," spiritual gospel play "like Tyler Perry," and if he doesn't, it's clear that he doesn't love his mama. "Or the Lord!"She also points out that Perry "knows how to bring everything together with all the stories, and all the singing, and all the different people talking," which Jackson shows a knack for in this song. But&nbsp;A Strange Loop&nbsp;as a whole isn't a homage to Tyler Perry's work, but a criticism of its homophobia, as Jackson experienced it.<h2>"Inner White Girl"</h2>In "Today," Usher mentions his "white girl music" as the only positive thing that distracts him from his self-deprecating thoughts and his unfulfilling job. Similarly, his "inner white girl" is his term for the confident, desirable part of him he's trying to bring out. White girls, Usher sings, "can do anything, can't they? ...&nbsp;They get to be cool, tall, vulnerable, and luscious. They get to be wild and unwise. They get to be shy and introspective. They get to make noise. They get to mesmerize." It's his outward Blackness, he also sings, that holds him back from being these things, though through no fault of his own.Jackson's concept of the confident "inner white girl" is mainly inspired by the rock musician Liz Phair. A reference to her song "Supernova" is in the lyrics of "Inner White Girl": "She lets him feel like a human supernova, like he could conquer the Earth." Jackson also got the musical's title from Phair's song "Strange Loop."<h2>"Didn't Want Nothin'"</h2>Like "We Wanna Know,"&nbsp;"Didn't Want Nothin'" is also a voicemail, this time left by Usher's dad. He tells his son that he went on "Googles.com" and found the phone number of TV/film/Broadway producer Scott Rudin. He condescendingly points out that both men are gay and encourages Usher to reach out to get his writing sold. The joke Jackson's making with this song, of course, is that breaking into the business is not that easy, and neither is actually contacting an extremely powerful producer.<h2>"Exile in Gayville"</h2>This song chronicles Usher's disappointing experiences trying to put himself out there in the gay dating world. He tries to put on his "inner white girl" persona but finds himself "exiled" by the mainly fit, white, traditionally attractive men he finds on dating apps. When they reject him, he lashes out at them back, further alienating him and making his self-doubt creep back up.The song includes lots of pop culture references, like mentions of Beyonce and and gay radio host Dan Savage; popular gay neighborhoods in New York like Hell's Kitchen and Fire Island; and dating apps like Adam4Adam. Like much of the musical,&nbsp;"Exile in Gayville" is inspired by Jackson's real-life experiences that he mashes up for the song. The title is also a reference to another Phair album,&nbsp;Exile in Guyville.<h2>"Second Wave"</h2>"Second Wave" is one of the few&nbsp;A Strange Loop&nbsp;songs that Usher sings without backing from any of the Thoughts. The ballad is a direct follow-up to&nbsp;"Exile in Gayville"; Usher is trying to comfort himself after striking out in the dating world. Usher repeats the line, "the second-wave feminist in me is at war with the dick-sucking Black gay man," another way of phrasing how he feels that his Blackness hinders people from seeing his "inner white girl." He laments how people don't seem to find him sexy or attractive, but hopes that "it's all for the best" and someone will take interest in him as a long-term partner someday.

<h2>"Tyler Perry Writes Real Life"</h2>Back in "We Wanna Know," Usher's mom tells him that&nbsp;"Tyler Perry Writes Real Life" in her voicemail, urging him to write a play like Perry's. And this song is the moment where her dreams might come true. Usher gets a call from his agent, offering him to be the ghostwriter for Perry's newest gospel play. "Just write a sassy, matriarchal, lonely spinster who loves God,"&nbsp;his agent says, the lyric being Jackson's way of satirizing Perry's writing.&nbsp;"Throw in a few Color Purple quotes!"Usher doesn't want to take the gig, as he finds Perry's work "simple-minded hack buffoonery." But during the song, a group of Black historical figures including Harriet Tubman, Zora Neale Hurston, and Whitney Houston "appear" to him to say he's a "race traitor" for knocking Perry's work, which provides jobs and visibility to Black people. They aggressively insist he should take the gig.<h2>"Writing a Gospel Play"</h2>Spoiler alert: Usher takes the job, desperate to kickstart his writing career. As the title may suggest, this song shows Usher brainstorming an idea for the play, titled&nbsp;"Show Me How to Pray: A Spiritual, Urban Drama."&nbsp;The Color Purple&nbsp;references — as well as a nod to Rihanna's "Bitch Better Have My Money" — make it in. He and the Thoughts act out the parts of the stock characters Aunt Patty,&nbsp;Shaneatha, and Michele, who learn that the way to achieve what they want in life is to pray. Since he's not thrilled about the topic, Usher's writing has a sarcastic edge: "So keep your knees bent in prayer, and the Lord Thy God will send you a lightskin man with no education who'll put you in the split-level mansion of your dreams!"<h2>"A Sympathetic Ear"</h2>"Sarcastic" isn't the vibe that Perry's play was meant to have, so Usher still finds himself working as a Broadway usher to pay the bills.&nbsp;"A Sympathetic Ear" is sung entirely by Thought 1 as an audience member who's talking to Usher. This elderly lady from Miami (like&nbsp;The Golden Girls&nbsp;ladies, she sings) helps him through his writer's block and encourages Usher to put himself and his dreams first, something she learned from never doing the same. The song ends with a nugget of wisdom: "If you're not scared to write the truth, then it's probably not worth writing. And if you're not scared of living the truth, then it's probably not worth living."<h2>"Inwood Daddy"</h2>The&nbsp;"Inwood Daddy" of this song's title is an older, meth-addicted white man who Usher meets for sex. The explicit song takes audiences through their sexual encounter, in which the man demeans and fetishizes Usher's race and size. The Thoughts urge Usher to "just do what he says because at least someone wants you," but the experience&nbsp;leaves him feeling even worse about himself than he did when he consented to have sex with&nbsp;"Inwood Daddy."<h2>"Boundaries"</h2>Just as "Second Wave" is a reflection on the hurt Usher experienced during "Exile in Gayville," "Boundaries" is a reflection on the hurt he experienced in "Inwood Daddy." He regrets his encounter with the man and wonders, "Why did I do that? What did that do for me?" He acknowledges how he's always putting himself down and doing what others tell him he should do, and concludes, "I can't know freedom without clear boundaries, 'til I draw boundaries."He's singing about sexual boundaries, but the song also applies to his career, like how he took the Tyler Perry ghostwriting assignment to please his family even though he despises it.

<h2>"Periodically"</h2>"Periodically" is another voicemail from Usher's mom. Like "We Wanna Know," the song begins innocently enough, with her wishing him happy birthday. "You turn 26 on the 26th, and this will never happen again, so enjoy your day!" she sings cheerfully. But this voicemail, too, turns into a guilt trip. Her mention of how his birth is a miracle from God soon turns into a lecture on how "man is for woman and woman for man," making clear that she doesn't support his sexuality.According to notes from Jackson on <a href="https://genius.com/A-strange-loop-cast-periodically-lyrics" target="_blank">Genius</a>, "Periodically" is one of the oldest songs in&nbsp;A Strange Loop&nbsp;and was partly pulled verbatim from an actual voicemail from his mom on his own 26th birthday. Jackson said of the song, "It's meant to be an emotional rollercoaster of the deep love and homophobia that Usher's mother feels and Usher's perception and perhaps internalization of that love and homophobia."<h2>"Didn't Want Nothin' Reprise"</h2>This short song is the final voicemail of the musical and the second from Usher's dad. He gravely tells Usher how some of the people from church found Usher's music and were appalled. Usher's dad implies that Usher shamed his parents by writing about queerness so publicly and being gay himself.<h2>"Precious Little Dream / AIDS Is God's Punishment"</h2>The "Precious Little Dream" of this song's first part isn't Usher's dream, but his mother's. One of the Thoughts, as her, lets out all his mom's anger and homophobia toward Usher, lamenting how he didn't fulfill the dreams she had: to get grandchildren, to have a religious child, to be free of his college loans. She even sings at one point, "Why couldn't you just be the daughter I always wanted?" She also breaks the fourth wall of&nbsp;A Strange Loop, asking Usher why he'd write her and his dad's characters into the show the way he did if he loved them. His answer is that he wrote them that way&nbsp;because&nbsp;he loves them.The song then transitions to "AIDS Is God's Punishment," a scene from Usher's gospel play. The song is set at the funeral of his cousin Darnell, who died of AIDS after not taking medication for it. Jackson has the priest say things like, "[Darnell] was an abomination just like me ... if I ever acted on my lust for another man, I would meet the same fate as Darnell, lying in that there box. And those words have kept me HIV-free but completely terrified ever since, because I realized then and there that the only thing worse than dying of AIDS was living with it." The song is a satire about homophobia in the church.The song also has a deeper meaning for Jackson. Shortly before&nbsp;A Strange Loop&nbsp;went into Off-Broadway rehearsals, a friend of his died of AIDS-related complications. He had written the song before that happened, but it took on a sadder and more meta significance.<h2>"Memory Song"</h2>"These are my memories of one lone Black gay boy I knew who chose to turn his back on the Lord," Usher repeatedly sings in this song. He sings about small things he remembers from his childhood, like sneaking a cupcake from the gym in high school and watching&nbsp;The&nbsp;Young &amp; the Restless&nbsp;on TV all the time. He also sings about the guilt and shame he remembers feeling growing up in the church, but the song becomes his way of finally overcoming that shame.Jackson uses Biblical references to describe Usher's feelings, such as in the lyric, "Flapping both my wings so hard to keep me from dying with a crown of godforsaken thorns on my head." "Memory Song" is the first song Jackson wrote for&nbsp;A Strange Loop, even though it's the second-to-last song in the show.<h2>"A Strange Loop"</h2>The musical's title track closes out the show. Usher breaks the fourth wall, starting the song with, "I am the story's writer; I'm barely scraping by. I wake up every morning, I tell myself to try." Fittingly, the song closes out the "loop" of the musical, as Usher is back where he started at "Intermission Song," still writing to get by. The difference, though, is that he's become more comfortable in his Blackness and queerness and doesn't feel he needs to change.Usher goes from a place of loathing himself for who he is, to accepting himself, even though he hasn't fully gotten where he wants to be.&nbsp;A Strange Loop&nbsp;leaves his journey unfinished — but since Usher is a stand-in for Jackson, we know where the Black, queer writer's journey leads. The prince's journey is coming to an end. The Broadway production of The Little Prince will close early, playing its final performance on May 8. The limited run began March 29 and was originally scheduled to run through August 14 at the Broadway Theatre.

The Outer Critics Circle has announced the nominations for its 2022 awards. This year's awards, the 71st annual, will mark a return to an in-person ceremony after last year's virtual honors. Winners will be announced May 16, with a ceremony to honor them following on May 26.The Outer Critics Circle Awards annually recognize excellence in both Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre. The Drama League has announced the nominations for its 2022 awards. The Drama League Awards annually recognize excellence in Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre, with both types of shows competing in the same categories. This year's awards ceremony will take place on May 20 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.The Drama League gives awards for a distinguished new play and musical each season, a distinguished play and musical revival, and a distinguished performance in either a play or musical. This year, the League is also presenting awards for direction of a play and musical, respectively, for the first time.In addition to the competitive awards, the Drama League has also announced some special recognitions. Farewell, so long, goodbye. Will Swenson will play his final performance in [*A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24254-a-beautiful-noise-tickets) on Broadway on October 29.

Swenson currently leads the show at the [Broadhurst Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/broadhurst-theatre) as Neil Diamond - Then, a younger version of the singer-songwriter as an up-and-coming musician. The show follows Diamond as he looks back on his life and career, and his [greatest hits](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/all-the-songs-in-a-beautiful-noise-on-broadway) propel the story of how he went from a poor Brooklyn kid to an award-winning, globally bestselling musician.

Swenson has played Diamond since *A Beautiful Noise* opened in November 2022. The current cast, most of whom are also original members, also includes Mark Jacoby as Neil Diamond – Now, Robyn Hurder as Marcia, Shirine Babb as Doctor, Jessie Fisher as Jaye Posner, Michael McCormick as Fred Weintraub/ Tommy O’Rourke, Tom Alan Robbins as Bert Berns/Kieve Diamond, and Bri Sudia as Ellie Greenwich/Rose Diamond.

Replacement casting for Swenson has yet to be announced. Nick Fradiani currently serves as Swenson's alternate, playing Neil Diamond - Then for one performance a week; he will continue in this role.

The actor originated the role of a young Neil Diamond in this musical at the Broadhurst Theatre about the Grammy Award-winning musician's life and career.

The musical will have played for just over a year, having played 483 total performances since November 1, 2022.

*Some Like It Hot* is a musical adapted from the 1959 Billy Wilder comedy of the same name, in which two Prohibition-era jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, flee the Chicago mob. While stowing away in disguise with an all-female swing band, they find love and learn more about their truest identities.

Matthew López and Amber Ruffin wrote the book, and songs are by Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics). Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs.

The musical adaptation of the 1959 Billy Wilder film at the Shubert Theatre. was the most Tony Award-nominated show of the 2022-23 season with 13 nods.

Sometimes the dividing line between a character and a playwright is a blurry one. So it is with Ossie Davis’s 1961 satirical comedy [*Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27642-purlie-victorious-tickets), now back on Broadway for the first time since its debut 62 years ago.

The story follows Purlie Victorious Judson, a Black self-made traveling preacher who returns to his segregated Georgia hometown with a mission to buy and rehab its derelict church, Big Bethel. As a Black man, that’s a tall order. The church, like the town, is in the grip of racist tyrant Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee.

Davis grew up in racially segregated Georgia. Like Purlie, Davis had first-hand experience with discrimination and bigotry, forces that inform the play and fueled his lifelong commitment to civil rights. In a pre-show voiceover, director Kenny Leon notes that the play began as an angry drama. But it evolved to become less autobiographical and funnier. Get people laughing, you get people’s attention. ## The politics of *Purlie Victorious*

Davis situated his play in Georgia in the late 1950s, a time when Jim Crow – which has been called “a racial caste system” – were in effect in the American South. Bottom line: Blacks were second-class citizens.

“Jim Crow was more than a series of rigid anti-black laws. It was a way of life,” according to the [Jim Crow Museum](https://jimcrowmuseum.ferris.edu/), a resource to tell the story of African American resiliency. Jim Crow bolstered the lie that Blacks were inferior to whites. 

Davis shrewdly creates Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee to be the flesh-and-blood manifestation of Jim Crow, a man dressed head to toe in white who won’t hesitate to say he reveres “all that is white and holy” – and that doesn’t include African Americans. He sums the philosophy up in a chilling line: "My ol' Confederate father told me on his deathbed: Feed the Negras first - after the horses and cattle."

Cotchipee is quick to reach for his bullwhip, but he takes a shine to Purlie’s brother Gitlow (that name is no accident), an “Uncle Tom” who’s content being subservient and keeping to the old-plantation-day ways. 

But Davis leaves room for hope. Cotchipee’s liberal-minded son Charlie has had it with his father’s bigoted ways – and that ultimately leads the way for Purlie to get the last laugh.

## The real-life partnership of *Purlie Victorious*

Purlie’s plan to take ownership of Big Bethel requires a secret weapon – Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, a follower and love interest of Purlie's who’s game for anything. Ossie Davis played the title role in the comedy’s Broadway premiere, so naturally, his wife, Ruby Dee, played Lutiebelle. 

The couple, who were married for 57 years, previously shared a Broadway stage in 1946 in *Jeb* and 1959 in *A Raisin in the Sun*. *Purlie Victorious* gave them a chance to chomp into two juicy roles together onstage. And their involvement in the show didn't end with the original production: Dee later played the supporting role of Idella in a 2002 reading.

They frequently worked together throughout their careers until he died in 2005 at 87; she died in 2014 at 91. But *Purlie Victorious* gave them a unique chance to shine a bright spotlight on the struggle for equality.

## Famous *Purlie Victorious* reviews

Suffice it to say that the social influencers of 1961 took notice of what Purlie Victorious was preaching. Fellow reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. saw the show. So did Malcolm X. According to Davis, [X said](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ccbh/mxp/davis.html), “Black folks laughing at White folks was revolutionary — the highest kind of struggle he could imagine.” 

Eleanor Roosevelt also attended. She laughed, and then she [wrote about the experience](https://www2.gwu.edu/~erpapers/myday/displaydoc.cfm?_y=1962&_f=md005050). “Mixed with the humor there is intelligent, incisive commentary on segregation, discrimination, and the slow pace of integration,” she wrote.

“I think it is well for you as an American citizen to see it,” she added, “and ponder our racial problem… as a question affecting our standing and our real sincerity among the peoples of the world.”

## Behind the Emerald Curtain

## Trapeze class

One of the most jaw-dropping moments in *Wicked* is when Elphaba takes flight. If you want to get a taste of what it feels like to soar through the air, you can take a flying trapeze class. The Trapeze School of New York at Hudson River Park, for example, teaches you how to hang by your knees, fly through the air, and do a “catch” (when someone on another trapeze bar catches you) all in your first class.

You can also try other gravity-defying activities, like trampoline classes and aerial hoop classes (also known as Lyra). It’s certainly a thrilling way to prepare for *Wicked*!

## *Wicked*

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Comedian Harmonists, a German sextet known for their freewheeling stage frolics and tight harmonies, ascended to popularity that spanned the globe. ### *Hell’s Kitchen*

### *I Can Get It for You Wholesale*

Antihero, anyone? *Tootsie* Tony winner Santino Fontana stars as Harry Bogen, an eager-beaver shipping clerk in 1937 New York City whose ambition is rivaled only by his unscrupulousness. This [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company) production marks the first revival of the 1962 musical in 30 years and is a bit of a family affair. Revisions to Jerome Weidman’s original book, based on his novel, are by his son, John Weidman. Songs are by Harold Rome.

They're hitting the dance floor! The new Broadway musical [*How to Dance in Ohio*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32763-how-to-dance-in-ohio-tickets) has set its complete Broadway cast ahead of its first performance on November 15. Opening night is December 10.

*How to Dance in Ohio* is a musical adaptation of the same-named documentary by Alexandra Shiva. The show follows a group of autistic young adults who come of age and experience newfound love, stress, confidence, and change as they prepare for a formal dance at their group counseling center.

The show comes to Broadway's [Belasco Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/belasco-theatre) after a 2022 world premiere in Syracuse, with multiple cast members returning.

## Who is in the *How to Dance in Ohio* Broadway cast?

Newly announced *How to Dance in Ohio* cast members include Caesar Samayoa as psychologist Dr. Emilio Amigo, Cristina Sastre as Ashley Amigo, and ensemble members Jean Christian Barry, Collin Hancock, Hunter Hollingsworth, Marina Jansen, Ayanna Thomas, and Marina Pires.

They join seven [previously announced cast members](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/new-musical-how-to-dance-in-ohio-to-premiere-on-broadway-this-fall) making their Broadway debuts: Desmond Luis Edwards as Remy, Amelia Fei (Yi-Hsuan Fei) as Caroline, Madison Kopec as Marideth, Liam Pearce as Drew, Imani Russell as Mel, Conor Tague as Tommy, and Ashley Wool as Jessica. All are autistic actors reprising their roles from Syracuse as the autistic adults in the show.

Other previously announced cast members include Haven Burton as Terry, Darlesia Cearcy as Johanna, Carlos L Encinias, Nick Gaswirth, Melina Kalomas, and Martín Solá.

How to Dance in Ohio on Broadway

The new musical, based on Alexandra Shiva's Peabody Award-winning documentary about autistic adults, begins performances at the Belasco Theatre in November.

Their name is Lancelot! Taran Killam and Alex Brightman join the cast of the upcoming [*Spamalot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33129-spamalot-tickets) Broadway revival, playing at the [St. James Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre) from October 31. Opening night is November 16.

Killam returns to Broadway after playing King George III in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2017. He is better known, however, for his onscreen comedy performances on *madTV* and *Saturday Night Live*, in addition to multiple sitcoms. He will play Lancelot through January 7 only.

Brightman will step into the role from January 9. He is currently starring as Richard Dreyfuss in [*The Shark Is Broken*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28737-the-shark-is-broken-tickets) on Broadway, and he is also known for leading the Broadway musical adaptations of *Beetlejuice* and *School of Rock*. Brightman also played Lancelot at the Kennedy Center, where this *Spamalot* revival production premiered earlier this year under director/choreographer Josh Rhodes.

The actors join a cast that also includes Broadway favorites James Monroe Iglehart, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer, Ethan Slater, and more at the St. James Theatre.

Ease on down to Broadway! A revival of [*The Wiz*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27115-the-wiz-tickets) will begin performances this spring at the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre). The first performance is March 29, and opening night is April 17.

The announcement of the New York production comes as *The Wiz* opened its pre-Broadway national tour in Baltimore, Maryland — where the Tony Award-winning original 1975 production premiered — last night.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black retelling of *The Wizard of Oz*, infusing it with jazz, pop, ballet, and Black cultural influences. The show features a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls and others, including Luther Vandross. The 2023 revival features additional material by Amber Ruffin, also represented on Broadway with *Some Like It Hot*.

## Who is in *The Wiz* Broadway cast?

As [previously announced](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/complete-cast-set-for-broadway-bound-the-wiz-revival), the Broadway cast of *The Wiz* stars [Wayne Brady](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/wayne-brady) as The Wiz alongside Nichelle Lewis as Dorothy, Deborah Cox as Glinda, Melody A. Betts as Aunt Em and Evillene, Kyle Ramar Freeman as the Lion, Phillip Johnson Richardson as the Tinman, and Avery Wilson as the Scarecrow.

The ensemble includes Maya Bowles, Shayla Alayre Caldwell, Jay Copeland, Allyson Kaye Daniel, Judith Franklin, Michael Samarie George, Collin Heyward, Amber Jackson, Olivia Jackson, Christina Jones, Polanco Jones, Kolby Kindle, Mariah Lyttle, Kareem Marsh, Anthony Murphy, Cristina Rae, Matthew Sims Jr, Avilon Trust Tate, Keenan D. Wayne Brady will star in the latest revival of the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical, which just launched a national tour prior to its New York opening.

The career paths of Josh Gad and [Andrew Rannells](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-rannells) happily keep on colliding – and paralleling. Right now, they’re at the [James Earl Jones Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/james-earl-jones-theatre) in [*Gutenberg! The Musical!*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/31399-gutenberg-the-musical-tickets), a show with two actors and just as many exclamation points. The comic duo play musical theatre composers writing a show about the inventor of the printing press.

Out there? Sure. Then again, the story of misbegotten Mormon missionaries in Uganda is also wacky. That’s what the long-running, Tony Award-winning musical [*The Book of Mormon*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/127-the-book-of-mormon-tickets), in which Gad and Rannells first performed together, is about.

## 2005 and 2006: Broadway debuts

In January 2005, Rannells took over as high school student Fender in *Hairspray*. Like a ’60s beehive hairdo, the actor ascended high to the lead role of teenage heartthrob Link Larkin. Rannells has stepped into key roles in other Broadway shows including Bob Gaudio in *Jersey Boys*, the title role in *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, and King George in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets). 

A year later, in January 2006, the musical *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* introduced Gad to Broadway audiences. He took over the role of allergy-prone William Barfee, a kid who uses his “magic foot” to write out words before spelling them.

## 2011: *The Book of Mormon*

In 2011, Rannells and Gad landed the lead roles in the irreverent, sometimes profane musical by Robert Lopez (*Frozen, Avenue Q*) and *South Park* creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Rannells and Gad starred as Elders Price and Cunningham: Mormon missionaries in Uganda who are young, eager, in over their head, and making things up as they go along. Both got Best Actor Tony nominations for the still-running hit at the [Eugene O’Neill Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/eugene-o-neill-theatre).

## 2006 and 2016: The William Finn connection

Gad belted the kicky tune “Magic Foot” by William Finn in his Broadway debut in *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*. Rannells earned his second Tony nomination – Best Actor in a Supporting Role, as the ailing Whizzer – in the 2016 revival of *Falsettos*, a show with music, lyrics, and a book by Finn.

## 2013 and 2016: The Disney connection

Beyond the stage, Disney is common ground for the pair. For episodes of the animated TV series *Sofia the First*, Rannells voiced Morris, a goblin. Meanwhile, Gad voiced Olaf, the fan-fave snowman in the *Frozen* film franchise.

## 2023: *Gutenberg! The Musical!*

As Bud and Doug in this musical by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the actors wear a lot of hats – and that’s not a metaphor. They play the authors of a show about Johannes Gutenberg, which they pitch to potential investors with the means to finance the project. They act out the show playing characters whose names are on baseball caps.
