<p>Love is in the air — or at least on our screens. We're planning to spend Valentine's Day the pandemic way: watching movies on our couch.</p><p>In honor of the rom-coms we've got lined up onscreen, we thought we'd take a look at the movies that have coupled up with the stage to make mushy gushy romantic musical magic.</p><p><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/whats-on/broadway/musicals" target="_blank">Get tickets to a Broadway musical on New York Theatre Guide.</a></p>

## *The Notebook*

This movie is perhaps *the* one people think of when they imagine a romantic drama — that is, one you'll need tissues for. The 2004 movie stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as Noah and Allie, a working-class man and heiress who fall in love and fight across decades to find their way back to each other after fate pulls them apart. The musical adaptation, with music by Ingrid Michaelson, premiered in Chicago in 2022 and comes to Broadway in spring 2023.

<h2><em>Amélie</em></h2><p>When the movie&nbsp;<em>Amélie</em>&nbsp;first came out in 2001, it was a literal global success. And Amélie herself? Well, she was the perfect leading lady. Whimsical, imaginative, and mischievous. It was no wonder she became a Broadway star in 2017.</p><p>With the help of&nbsp;<em>Hamilton</em>'s Phillipa Soo and the creative brains behind the Broadway adaptations of&nbsp;<em>An American in Paris&nbsp;</em>and&nbsp;<em>Tuck Everlasting</em>, Amélie's Parisian dreams traveled over to New York City. While her visit was short (the show ran for 56 regular performances) the&nbsp;<a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/19Vm5Ds1kH4p1yckKXXD0Z?si=6XufRmcWQ8OzKyu48nW0Fg">cast recording</a>&nbsp;makes for a sweet escape, no matter where you are.</p><h2><em>The Apartment / Promises, Promises</em></h2><p>At this rate — no matter when, where, or who acts out this story — it's bound to be a hit. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine led the workplace rom-com when&nbsp;<em>The Apartment&nbsp;</em>came out in 1960. Name an award, it was nominated for it. Eight years later Burt Bacharach, Hal David, and Neil Simon revamped the story for the stage with the new name&nbsp;<em>Promises, Promises</em>.</p><p>Jerry Orbach and Jill O'Hara were the stars this time around and like its movie counterpart, the musical was a total success. In 1969&nbsp;<em>Promises, Promises</em>&nbsp;went to the West End and then in 2008 Sean Hayes (<em>Will &amp; Grace</em>) and <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/kristin-chenoweth" target="_blank">Kristin Chenoweth</a> (<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/wicked-musical" target="_blank"><em>Wicked</em></a>) led a star-studded revival.</p><h2><em>Clueless</em></h2><p>When we heard&nbsp;<em><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/clueless-the-musical" target="_blank">Clueless</a>&nbsp;</em>was being adapted into a musical, we were like "Oh my god, I am totally buggin'." The coming-of-age comedy is a cult favorite; nearly every line is quotable, the characters are iconic, and don't even get us started on the costumes. The 1995 film starred teenage Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, and more.</p><p>So it was no wonder that when the movie transferred to the stage in 2018, Disney Channel favorite Dove Cameron was Cher. The off-Broadway run featured the perfect playlist of high school hits like "Bye Bye Bye," "No Scrubs," and "Kids in America."</p><h2><em>The Goodbye Girl</em></h2><p>A struggling actor is forced to room with his friend's ex-girlfriend: what could possibly go wrong (or right)?&nbsp;<em>The Goodbye Girl</em>&nbsp;was written by Neil Simon (<em>The Odd Couple</em>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/plaza-suite" target="_blank"><em>Plaza Suite</em></a>) himself, which means no one can be surprised it was eventually turned into a musical. The movie came out in 1977 with Richard Dreyfuss as the struggling actor and Marsha Mason as his unexpected roommate.</p><p>It was a smash success and the creative team attempted to turn it into a TV show until the roommates landed on Broadway in 1993 instead. The struggling actor? Martin Short, in his Broadway debut. The ex-girlfriend? <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/bernadette-peters" target="_blank">Bernadette Peters</a>, already a Broadway mainstay. What a duo!</p><h2><em>Groundhog Day</em></h2><p>As an actor on Broadway performing the same show eight times a week, it can oftentimes feel like you're living in the movie&nbsp;<em>Groundhog Day</em>. Now how about if you're an actor on Broadway performing&nbsp;<em>Groundhog Day</em>&nbsp;eight times a week? Well then, you're probably Andy Karl.</p><p>Before the musical,&nbsp;<em>Groundhog Day</em>&nbsp;was a pop culture phenomenon starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. After the movie came out in 1993, Stephen Sondheim (<em>Sweeney Todd</em>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/company" target="_blank"><em>Company</em></a>) considered making it a musical before stating the movie "cannot be improved." That's when the movie's screenwriter Danny Rubin took to the task and partnered with Tim Minchin (<em>Matilda</em>&nbsp;<em>the Musical</em>) for the stage adaptation.</p><p><em>Groundhog Day</em>&nbsp;opened in London before coming to Broadway in 2017. The show ran for about six months, featured a seemingly magical revolving stage, and starred Karl (<em>Legally Blonde&nbsp;</em>and&nbsp;<em>Rocky</em>&nbsp;musicals) as Phil.</p><h2><em>The Philadelphia Story / High Society</em></h2><p>Listen to this: In 1940 Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and James Stewart star in&nbsp;<em>The Philadelphia Story</em>, a love triangle of all love triangles tale that was an instant classic. Then in 1955, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Grace Kelly star in a movie-musical adaptation of&nbsp;<em>The Philadelphia Story</em>&nbsp;called&nbsp;<em>High Society</em>. Beautiful people dancing and singing whilst in a love triangle ensues.</p><p>Forty years after that,&nbsp;<em>High Society</em>&nbsp;makes its way to the Broadway stage with a bunch of talented actors. We're sorry to skip over all their names but we have to get to the part where Anna Kendrick is in the musical as a 12-year-old and she gets nominated for a Tony Award. The stage adaptation has since been revived twice in London, sans 12-year-old Anna Kendrick.</p><h2><em>Honeymoon in Vegas</em></h2><p>The 1992 movie stars James Caan, Nicolas Cage, and Sarah Jessica Parker in the most 1990s of costumes ever you will think they are a parody until you remember, no, that's how we really dressed back then. It's a total romantic romp which means it made for a perfectly campy Broadway adaptation.&nbsp;<em>Honeymoon in Vegas&nbsp;</em>was written by the movie's screenwriter Andrew Bergman with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown (<em>The Last Five Years</em>,&nbsp;<em>Parade</em>).</p><p>The show premiered at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey then opened on Broadway in 2015 with Tony Danza (<em>Taxi</em>), Rob McClure (look out for him later on this list in&nbsp;<em>Mrs. Doubtfire</em>), and Brynn O'Malley (<em>Wicked</em>,&nbsp;<em>Hairspray</em>) in the leading roles. While critics loved the show, it only stayed open for about four months; if anything,&nbsp;<em>Honeymoon in Vegas</em>&nbsp;gave us Andrew Barth Feldman&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4HGSE2dd9Y">singing this song</a>.</p><h2><em>Legally Blonde</em></h2><p>What, like starring on Broadway is hard? When the movie&nbsp;<em>Legally Blonde</em>&nbsp;came out in 2001, it basically imprinted itself into the brains and hearts of every single person who saw it, right? It's just a classic! The quotes, the pink, the most fun we've ever had watching a court scene ever. The schoolgirl and schoolboy crush! We love it all. And we&nbsp;<em>really&nbsp;</em>love&nbsp;<em>Legally Blonde</em>&nbsp;when it's a musical.</p><p>The stage version opened on Broadway in 2007 and if we're talking in LSAT scores it's a total 180/180. The musical originally starred Laura Bell Bundy as Elle and Christian Borle as Emmett (Orfeh, Andy Karl, and Annaleigh Ashford were also a part of the cast, too). Before the show closed on Broadway in 2008 — productions have since opened around the world — there was a reality show competition on MTV called&nbsp;<em><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfT9O-8oS2o&amp;list=PLUr63EmsNxv5TpKuq5eEm-t_R4t9FqJyh">The Search for the Next Elle Woods</a></em>&nbsp;that you can watch on YouTube right now.</p><h2><em>Mean Girls</em></h2><p>The first time we got to sit with other fans of the movie&nbsp;<em>Mean Girls</em>&nbsp;and watch the musical&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/mean-girls" target="_blank"><em>Mean Girls</em></a>&nbsp;was pretty darn fetch. The movie — written by Tina Fey — came out in 2004 with Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amy Poehler, Amanda Seyfried, and more. It quickly became the most popular movie of the era. Lucky for all of us Tina Fey is married to Jeff Richmond, the brains behind your fave musical sketches on&nbsp;<em>Saturday Night Live</em>,&nbsp;<em>30 Rock</em>, and more.</p><p>Why is that lucky? Because the duo partnered together to transfer North Shore High to Broadway in 2018 with Erika Henningsen, Taylor Louderman, Barrett Wilbert Weed, Ashley Park, and more. Unfortunately due to Covid-19,&nbsp;<em>Mean Girls&nbsp;</em>won't be opening back up on Broadway, but there's some gossip going around that a movie version of the musical is in the works.</p><h2><em>Mrs. Doubtfire</em></h2><p>A very good spoiler alert: The dance-and-clean scene made its way to the Broadway adaptation. The magic of Robin Williams first introduced us to&nbsp;<em><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/mrs-doubtfire" target="_blank">Mrs. Doubtfire</a>&nbsp;</em>in 1993. Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, and Matilda herself Mara Wilson rounded out the classic's cast. After that but years before Mrs. Doubtfire made her Broadway bow, Fierstein and Alan Menken collaborated on a potential stage version.</p><p>Unfortunately, that script and those songs never saw the spotlight, but in 2018 a new all-star creative team took the Hillard's under their wing, with Tony Award winner <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/rob-mcclure" target="_blank">Rob McClure</a> (<em>Chaplin</em>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/beetlejuice" target="_blank"><em>Beetlejuice</em></a>) in Robin Williams's role. The show had a quick run in Seattle and was supposed to open in NYC April 5, 2020. Due to Covid-19, that first dance-and-clean scene has been postponed, but we can't wait to hang out with the Hillards when it's safe.</p><h2><em>My Best Friend's Wedding</em></h2><p>There she is, Julia Roberts, the Queen of Romantic Comedies. Not to spoil a movie that came out in 1997 but&nbsp;<em>My Best Friend's Wedding</em>&nbsp;is not your typical I-know-what's-going-to-happen-within-the-first-five-minutes movie and that's what makes it great. That, and Dermot Mulroney's face and also everything Cameron Diaz does ever.</p><p>Like many real weddings this past year, the musical adaptation of&nbsp;<em>My Best Friend's Wedding&nbsp;</em>was planning to open in the UK in 2020 but, due to Covid-19, has been postponed to September 2021. The show will star Alexandra Burke as Julianne Potter and will feature the songs of writing duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David — including the movie's iconic number "I Say a Little Prayer."</p><h2><em>Pretty Woman</em></h2><p>You can never have too much Julia Roberts on a list or on your screen, right? The 1990 film stars the picture perfect pair that is Roberts and Richard Gere in their first onscreen romance. (Their second:&nbsp;<em>Runaway Bride</em>.)</p><p><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/pretty-woman-the-musical" target="_blank"><em>Pretty Woman</em></a>&nbsp;— like lots of other movies on this list — was an instant fan fave and entered the 1990s zeitgeist immediately. The story stayed on the screen for years before opening on Broadway in 2019 with Samantha Barks (<em>Les Misérables</em>) and Andy Karl (<em>Groundhog Day</em>,&nbsp;<em>Legally Blonde</em>) as the leading couple. While the Broadway show closed in 2019, a West End production opened right before Covid-19 unfortunately shut down theatres in 2020.</p><h2><em>Roman Holiday</em></h2><p>Audrey Hepurn and Gregory Peck riding around Italy and falling in love? We love a&nbsp;<em>Roman Holiday</em>. It's not a stretch to say the 1953 hit created the foundation for future rom-coms; it's funny and charming and features two of the prettiest people you've ever set your eyes on (<em>Notting Hill</em>&nbsp;is basically&nbsp;<em>Roman Holiday</em>, after all). So it's no wonder that the story was brought to the stage — using the songs of Cole Porter, no less.</p><p>While the musical has yet to be on Broadway, there was a run in San Francisco in 2017 starring Stephanie Styles (<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/kiss-me-kate" target="_blank"><em>Kiss Me, Kate</em></a>) and Drew Gehling (<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/waitress" target="_blank"><em>Waitress</em></a>) as the unexpected couple riding in tandem through Rome. We don't mean to be pushy but when Broadway returns this could be the exact escapism we've been craving.</p><h2><em>Shrek</em></h2><p>Now this is romance. Not to go all Millennial but Shrek and Fiona are #couplegoals. Look at those frog and snake balloons! Absolutely nothing cuter. The 2001 movie was obviously the best thing to ever happen to Earth ever. An ogre falls in love with a princess who's also secretly an ogre? This is some Shakespearean magic we're talking about which means of course&nbsp;<em>Shrek&nbsp;</em>had to become a Broadway musical.</p><p>Shrek deserves nothing but the spotlight and that's exactly what he got when the show opened in NYC in 2010. Jeanine Tesori (<em>Fun Home</em>) wrote the music, Brian d'Arcy James (<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/hamilton" target="_blank"><em>Hamilton</em></a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/the-ferryman" target="_blank"><em>The Ferryman</em></a>) was Shrek, and <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/sutton-foster" target="_blank">Sutton Foster</a> (Broadway royalty,&nbsp;<em>Thoroughly Modern Millie</em>) turned into Fiona before our eyes. Also, Christopher Sieber (<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/the-prom" target="_blank"><em>The Prom</em></a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/company" target="_blank"><em>Company</em></a>) was Lord Farquaad and he did the entire show on his knees. You just need to go to Netflix right now to watch the Broadway production and see it for yourself.</p><h2><em>Sleepless in Seattle</em></h2><p>It's about time you showed up, Tom Hanks.&nbsp;<em>Sleepless in Seattle</em>&nbsp;came out in 1993 and one of the main plot points features a radio talk show, which makes this movie a period piece. Hanks stars alongside Meg Ryan and child actors that you actually want to watch and contrary to the title it ends at the top of the Empire State Building with a teddy bear in tow and it's all super mushy gushy cutesy and adorable. In 2009 the musical version of&nbsp;<em>Sleepless in Seattle</em>&nbsp;began development and after years of writing and rewriting and new creative teams, it opened for a short, socially distanced run in London in 2020.</p><h2><em>Thoroughly Modern Millie</em></h2><p>Julie Andrews and Sutton Foster is such a powerful duo. Andrews first brought Millie to life in 1967, alongside Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Channing.&nbsp;<em>Thoroughly Modern Millie&nbsp;</em>was a musical from the start, and a Broadway adaptation was essentially a given. In 2002 Sutton Foster's Millie danced her way into our hearts, and the show itself won six Tony Awards. A West End production followed in 2004 and the show has become a popular fave amongst high school theaters.</p><h2><em>Tootsie</em></h2><p>We're sensing a pattern with this list: When&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/tootsie" target="_blank"><em>Tootsie</em></a>&nbsp;came out in theatres, it was one of the biggest movies of the year. Dustin Hoffman brought Michael Dorsey to the screen in 1982, alongside Jessica Lange, who would eventually win an Oscar for her performance in the film. In 2019 the show-within-the-show became a musical and&nbsp;<em>Tootsie</em>&nbsp;opened on Broadway.</p><p>Santino Fontana (<em>Cinderella</em>,&nbsp;<em>Crazy Ex-Girlfriend</em>) won a Tony Award for his version of Dorsey and Lilli Cooper (<em>Spring Awakening</em>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/spongebob-squarepants" target="_blank"><em>SpongeBob SquarePants</em></a>) was nominated for her performance in the role Lange originated. Also Sarah Stiles sang a song faster than anyone has sang a song on a Broadway stage and it was a 10/10.&nbsp;<em>Tootsie</em>&nbsp;was on Broadway for a little less than a year but multiple productions around the world are in the works.</p><h2><em>Waitress</em></h2><p>When&nbsp;<em><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/waitress" target="_blank">Waitress</a>&nbsp;</em>first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 it was the little movie that could, just like Jenna Hunterson herself! Now that coincidence is sweet as pie (pun absolutely intended). Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion star as Hunterson and her hot doctor respectively, and the movie itself is a total emotional rollercoaster. So naturally, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/sara-bareilles" target="_blank">Sara Bareilles</a> was brought on to make us cry with her lyrics in the musical adaptation.</p><p>In 2016&nbsp;<em>Waitress&nbsp;</em>opened on Broadway with original music from Bareilles and an all-female creative team. <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/jessie-mueller" target="_blank">Jessie Mueller</a> (<em>Beautiful</em>) and Drew Gehling (remember him earlier in Italy?) starred as the original secret lovers who made us feel all the feels.&nbsp;<em>Waitress&nbsp;</em>closed after a well-deserved four-year run on Broadway but the endless "She Used to Be Mine" covers live forever in our hearts and our YouTube search history.</p><h2><em>The Wedding Singer</em></h2><p>That there was ever a main Broadway character inspired by an Adam Sandler character is what dreams are made of.&nbsp;<em>The Wedding Singer&nbsp;</em>came out in 1998 with Drew Barrymore and Sandler doing what the do best: falling in love onscreen in unrealistic settings (we're talking to you,&nbsp;<em>50 First Dates</em>).</p><p>At first glance you might not picture the movie as a musical, but then you find out <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/laura-benanti" target="_blank">Laura Benanti</a> (<em>Gypsy</em>,<em>&nbsp;</em>Melania Trump on&nbsp;<em>The Late Show with Stephen Colbert</em>) was Barrymore's character, and it kind of makes sense, no?&nbsp;<em>The Wedding Singer</em>&nbsp;was on Broadway in 2006 and now musical adaptations of Adam Sandler's character can be seen in high schools around the country, which is a better ending to this story than we could've ever imagined.</p>

<p>Noma Dumezweni is a little bit magical. Sure, she's playing Hermione Granger, that type-A witch who is the literary heroine of women everywhere, in <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child" target="_blank"><em>Harry Potter and the Cursed Child</em></a>, but Dumezweni herself possesses a certain&nbsp;<em>je ne sais quoi</em>. Her co-star Jamie Parker, who plays the titular boy who lived, likens her to a Patronus (that positive projection of a person's inner hope and love). When asked what type of magic she'd love to wield, Dumezweni said she simply wants the power to calm everyone she encounters.</p><p>"Sometimes when I meet people, I want to put my hand on them and just go, 'And breathe,'" she said. "That's all I want you to do. Just breathe."</p><p>But Dumezweni surely already has this ability. Standing outside the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lyric-theatre" target="_blank">Lyric Theatre</a> on her cigarette break under a soon-to-be-stormy sky, she immediately makes you feel like you've known her forever. We've just wrapped a photoshoot at the stunningly redesigned and remodeled Lyric Theatre, where the play is running, and when we sit down to chat, our meeting feels like part-therapy session, part-motivational talk. Although an interview is defined as a one-sided exchange, Dumezweni doesn't hesitate to ask questions, offer encouragement, and be affectionate. It's instantly disarming — no&nbsp;<em>Expelliarmus&nbsp;</em>required.</p><p>Her infectious positivity and immense talent no doubt brought her to where she is today, and she's not taking any of her success for granted. She joined <em>Harry Potter and the Cursed Child</em> in early developmental stages, and when the producers first brought her in for the project, she had no idea what it was. All she knew was that it was a new play by Jack Thorne with John Tiffany at the helm. Upon hearing that she would be reading for Hermione in a brand-new Harry Potter story, she was stunned.</p><p>The play picks up at the epilogue of the seventh book and follows the wizarding trio as they navigate parenthood and a new generation at Hogwarts. Dumezweni did not think she would continue with the show beyond the workshops — she was just happy to be in the room — but on the last day of the final workshop, Tiffany and producer Sonia Friedman came up to her and asked her to be in the West End production.</p><p>"I just gotta trust my life more," she said with a sigh. "I did not think it was going to happen at all. Loads of questions were popping into my head and the biggest one was, 'Can I do a show for a year?'"</p><p>The answer: yes. She opened the show at the Palace Theatre in London in summer 2016 and won an Olivier Award for her performance. Now, she's earned a Tony Award nomination for her Broadway debut in the play, and she's signed on for another year in the wizarding world.</p><p>Her success is a long time coming. At age 8, she arrived in England with her mother and sister, fleeing the South African apartheid, and she still remembers that young girl who struggled in school and found acting as a form of play and escape from the academia that bogged her down in the classroom.</p><p>"I'm slowly getting over my issues of feeling over lack of education, 'cause I used to think I was very stupid," she said. "What I've learned is I'm an intelligent person, but intelligence works in different ways."</p><p>She gravitated toward drama classes in school, and when she was 13, she joined a youth theatre, The Wosley Theatre, where she found her people and her passion. "I didn't think I was going to be an actor at that point. It was just something to do every week," she said.</p><p>After high school, she auditioned for drama school twice and was rejected both times, so she took a job as a public relations assistant and thought her future was in PR. However, she was laid off three months later and back to square one.</p><p>"This is another thing I try to impart to people: It's okay. I mean, it's shit in the moment. It's really horrible," she said. "Then you go, I've got to rethink what I wanted to do."</p><p>While she was on unemployment for a few months, she revisited her love of acting. She joined an improv class on Monday nights, and she took gigs reading scripts for theatre companies. She met the man who would become her mentor and biggest champion, Antony Singleton, when she signed up for a workshop called The Casting Couch, where actors would perform a monologue for an audience of agents, managers, casting directors, and other industry members. She worked on a monologue from <em>The Colored Museum</em> with Singleton, and from there, he became her go-to friend and acting coach. (She had a mini-freak-out over meeting the play's author and her fellow nominee George C. Wolfe at recent Tony events.)</p><p>She can relate to Hermione's story of being an outsider. As a child of Muggle parents, the character enters the wizarding world with no connections, and Dumezweni looks at it both from her perspective as coming to acting without an official drama school training and as a refugee.</p><p>"It's the immigration story," she said. "I did feel very lacking in a lot of things. That little thing in your heart that goes, I know I'm worth something. I'm worth something in the sense that Hermione was lucky that she found something, but she worked her tits off because she was an outsider. She wasn't part of this world and she had to learn really quickly."</p><p>Dumezweni admires Hermione's perseverance and work ethic, and although the character can get a bad rap sometimes, she thinks there's a reason women everywhere can see themselves in her.</p><p>"She may be in people's noses and going, 'No, no you can do better,' but she's doing it. I think that's what we all tapped into when we read that," she said. "And as people know, she's the one who got them out of trouble, each and every time."</p><p>Dumezweni can also relate to Hermione as a mother, as she has an 11-year-old daughter. Her daughter loves the <em>Harry Potter</em> movies, but Dumezweni is thrilled by the theatrical form of the story which allows a different glimpse into the world and the characters.</p><p>"The representation that's given of these books as imagery becomes very, very strong. We've grown with Daniel. We've grown with Rupert, and we've grown with Emma. That's who we've seen in the part," she said, noting that she adores Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the films.</p><p>"My joy is that it's a theatrical form. We can take risks," she continued. "We can experiment with that, but I am also aware that I know I can deliver on the part. It's not colorblind casting. That phrase irritates me."</p><p>When Dumezweni's casting was announced, there was a bit of a social media stir, which author J. K. Rowling stopped in its tracks with the powerful tweet: "Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione."</p><p>Dumezweni emphasizes the importance of representation onstage, and countless fans have come up to her saying, "Thank you for being my Hermione."</p><p>As she gears up for the next year in New York (she's settled in Tribeca), she's enjoying observing the city's differences from London.</p><p>"I know I'm here for a year on an adventure. I'm loving it," she said. "I get sad because the poverty is huge and I see the homelessness; it feels like a different kind of homelessness. Mental health is huge here and it's predominately black men. That, I find fascinating. If you just have one major demographic as one thing, you have to question that. In the same way you can say all the white males, there's a percentage there who are in charge of a lot of things. That's what I mean. The world is so shifting at the moment with the conversation we're having."</p><p>And she's excited about the direction the world is moving in, particularly as the next generation of women are making their voices heard and spearheading intersectional change across industries.</p><p>"Don't you feel it in the world now? Your generation, especially your generation of women, there is something for me, watching it in my late forties that I'm so excited for you lot," she said. "I am so excited for you lot because the conversations you're having within yourselves. There is a curiosity there. People are scared of young people speaking the truth, because you've been watching, you've been aware. Please keep enjoying that. Keep questioning. Keep meeting others who are different to you."</p><p>As she talks, she gets excited and grabs my arm, and I'm immediately enraptured in her energy. She wants me to help her change the world, and yes is the only correct answer. <p>Whether you see more stage shows than TV shows or vice versa, you know <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/debra-messing" target="_blank">Debra Messing</a>. Since becoming an Off-Broadway fixture in the 1990s, she skyrocketed to screen fame with her Emmy-nominated role as Grace Adler in&nbsp;<em>Will &amp; Grace</em>, and she's performed in dozens of other TV shows and films. In the 2010s, besides starring in the&nbsp;<em>Will &amp; Grace</em>&nbsp;reboot, she's returned to her theatre roots with a couple Broadway stints, the latest being as Ernestine Ashworth in the New York premiere of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/birthday-candles" target="_blank"><em>Birthday Candles</em></a>.</p><p>Even when she steals the silver screen, though, Messing always remains theatrical. After&nbsp;<em>Will &amp; Grace</em>, which included a musical episode, she dove headfirst into the world of Broadway by starring as composer Julia Houston on&nbsp;<em>Smash</em>. So whether you know Debra Messing from stage or screen, you know that she's a bonafide theatre star. And if you don't know her career too well, read on to learn about all her theatrical gigs before going to see her in&nbsp;<em>Birthday Candles</em>&nbsp;this spring.</p><p><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/birthday-candles" target="_blank">Get&nbsp;<em>Birthday Candles</em>&nbsp;tickets now.</a></p><h2><em>Angels in America: Perestroika</em></h2><p>Messing was getting critical acclaim for her acting before she was even out of grad school at New York University. She starred as Harper in a 1993 pre-Broadway workshop there of Tony Kushner's&nbsp;<em>Angels in America: Perestroika</em>, part two of the play that would become his magnum opus. As it happens, her NYU classmate and&nbsp;<em>Perestroika</em>&nbsp;co-star was Vivienne Benesch, who's now directing Messing in&nbsp;<em>Birthday Candles</em>&nbsp;on Broadway!</p><h2><em>Four Dogs and a Bone</em></h2><p>Manhattan Theatre Club's production of&nbsp;<em>Four Dogs and a Bone</em>, John Patrick Shanley's play about the dealings and manipulations behind the scenes of a Hollywood film, marked Messing's professional Off-Broadway debut. She was an understudy when the show opened at <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/new-york-city-center" target="_blank">New York City Center</a>'s Stage II, and then at the Lucille Lortel Theatre when the production moved there two months later. All in all, she was with the production from October 1993 to June 1994. Coincidentally, just over 20 years after a Shanley play marked Messing's Off-Broadway debut, she'd make her Broadway debut in one, too!</p><h2><em>The Naked Truth</em></h2><p>Not to be confused with the 2012 Allure article that comes up when you Google "Debra Messing in The Naked Truth," Paul Rudnick's comedic play is set in the Manhattan art world of the 1980s, where buttoned-up, art-dealing socialites get tangled up with the unapologetically gay artists whose (rather explicit) work they've commissioned. Messing played Lynette Marshall, a Republican politician's mistress who, deep down, actually has a thing for his wife. The production went up at the now-defunct WPA Theatre in 1994.</p><h2><em>Collected Stories</em></h2><p>Messing's last Off-Broadway venture was in 1997, as Lisa Morrison in Donald Margulies's Pulitzer-nominated play.&nbsp;<em>Collected Stories</em>&nbsp;sees Lisa write a successful novel based on her mentor's affair with a poet, and the show explores the ethics of creating art about other people's personal lives. Messing performed in&nbsp;<em>Collected Stories</em>&nbsp;shortly after guest starring on two episodes of&nbsp;<em>Seinfeld</em>, and she turned down an offer to star in another sitcom to do it. That's dedication to the theatre! And good thing, too, because we might not have gotten&nbsp;<em>Will &amp; Grace</em>&nbsp;otherwise, either. Speaking of which...</p>

<h2><em>Will &amp; Grace</em>: "Von Trapped"</h2><p><em>Will &amp; Grace</em>&nbsp;is Messing's best-known project in any medium, one that earned her an Emmy Award and dozens of nominations at various ceremonies. Her role as interior designer Grace Adler is largely not a theatrical one, though — except in season 8, episode 10, which aired in 2006. "Von Trapped" sees her and her friends go to a&nbsp;<em>The Sound of Music</em>&nbsp;singalong, but things go awry along the way. For one, Grace gets mistaken for a childcare worker and is left to take care of seven strange children, basically becoming Maria von Trapp in that moment! She even sings them some songs from the musical, including "Do-Re-Mi," "My Favorite Things," and "So Long, Farewell."</p>

<h2><em>Smash</em></h2><p>Before Messing even made it to Broadway in real life, she made it there on TV, starring in the NBC series&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/smash-a-new-musical" target="_blank"><em>Smash</em></a>&nbsp;from 2012-2013. She and Broadway regular <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/christian-borle" target="_blank">Christian Borle</a> starred as Julia Houston and Tom Levitt, a composer/lyricist duo writing&nbsp;<em>Bombshell</em>, a musical about Marilyn Monroe. By leading a cast of formidable theatre talent including Megan Hilty, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/katharine-mcphee" target="_blank">Katharine McPhee</a>, Leslie Odom Jr., <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/will-chase" target="_blank">Will Chase</a>, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/bernadette-peters" target="_blank">Bernadette Peters</a>, and more, Messing cemented herself a place alongside them in theatre kids' hearts. She even sings a little; you can hear her duet with Borle, "The Right Regrets," on the&nbsp;<em>Bombshell</em>&nbsp;soundtrack.</p>

<h2><em>Outside Mullingar</em></h2><p>After a long Off-Broadway and onscreen theatrical career, Messing made her Broadway debut in 2014 in&nbsp;<em>Outside Mullingar</em>, her second John Patrick Shanley play. The play about two 40-something misfits sees her character, Rosemary Muldoon, pining for her neighbor Anthony. It's a&nbsp;<em>Romeo and Juliet</em>-esque tale, in which their love is threatened by their (older) age and a turf war between their families, but it's luckily a lot more heartwarming. It also coincidentally shares some themes with&nbsp;<em>Birthday Candles</em>: Messing's character in that, too, watches years go by and wonders how to seize her life and make it full and worthwhile.</p>

<p>Tam Mutu, like many of us, is feeling like the world is a bit surreal at the moment. From contracting Covid-19 back in March to spending time in the hospital to quarantining at home, the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/moulin-rouge-the-musical-on-broadway" target="_blank"><em>Moulin Rouge! The Musical</em></a> star hasn't been able to process the past month or so. Mutu was one of the early patients in the theatre community, and he hopes his experience conveys the gravity of the situation.</p><p>"I feel like this is a time for people to come together and not be selfish and to be supportive and to be respectful of everyone and everything," he said. "It's not about you. It's about everyone else and the greater good, and that's the thing everyone is missing and not understanding. I don't want to sound preachy, but in a sense, it's a simple fix. If people just do what they're told and hopefully things will get back to normal maybe a bit quicker. Sadly, I don't think people are taking it as seriously as they should be."</p><p>Before lockdown began, Mutu was starring as the devilish Duke in <em>Moulin Rouge!</em>, the acclaimed stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 movie musical, but offstage, Mutu is nothing like his character. In fact, the performer asked as many questions about this writer's isolation, with genuine concern and offers to help or provide company.</p><p>As a survivor of the novel coronavirus, Mutu also adds that even though symptoms might vary from person to person, the disease itself is no joke.&nbsp;</p><p>"The pain is unbearable, it really is," Mutu said, adding that he's had the flu several times and this is nothing like it. "I don't think people understand how, if you get it badly, how painful it is. All the people saying, 'Oh, it's a hoax' is actually quite frustrating and you kind of want to bop them on the head and say: 'Listen, you don't really understand what you'e talking about.'"</p><p>Mutu definitely understands. He started to feel lethargic and run down on Wednesday, March 11, and when he reported his symptoms to company management, he was relieved that the team took action right away and cancelled that Thursday's matinee. That night, all of Broadway followed suit.&nbsp;</p><p>While there are plenty of rumors circulating about the Covid-19 experience and the virus has shown itself differently in different individuals, Mutu was especially shocked that his symptoms (fever, aches, chills, sweats) came on rather suddenly and lasted for a quite a while, going through phases of severity.&nbsp;</p><p>However, one night, he noticed his breathing getting bad, likening the experience to "an elephant sitting on my chest." He didn't want to go to the hospital, but as he continued to struggle to get air, he ultimately went, learning there that he had double pneumonia and low oxygen levels.&nbsp;</p><p>"It was scary to be in the hospital and all around that and the craziness that it is. It was not pleasant at all," he said, adding that he was at New York Presbyterian Hospital during the beginning of the pandemic and it had not hit peak capacity. "All those workers, I commend them massively," he adds. "They're working so hard and being so conscientious and really kind and once this is all settled all down, I'm going to be able to send them something."</p><p>Mutu recovered in the space of a few days and was sent home to heal on his own to free up a bed for the onslaught of incoming patients. Some of his <em>Moulin Rouge!</em> cast members also contracted the virus after, including <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/aaron-tveit" target="_blank">Aaron Tveit</a> and <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/danny-burstein" target="_blank">Danny Burstein</a>, who also spent time in the hospital.&nbsp;</p><p>Although he's a native of the UK, Mutu is weathering the storm in New York, but he hasn't been impressed with the government response in either location, and he's particularly worried by the US federal government's crisis management.&nbsp;</p><p>"In a time of crisis like this, you'd think everyone would be on the same page and just want the best for people and the country. I'm actually amazed how badly it's been dealt with, to be honest," he said. "I do think [Governor] Cuomo has been doing a fabulous job in the sense trying to keep people healthy and getting out the actual facts, rather than the president who is just giving you nonsense most of the time and contradicting himself consistently, which doesn't help at all. That allows people to become too passive with it and think, 'This doesn't affect me. I'm going to do what I want.' And that's what's causing a lot of the problems."</p><p>As soon as he recovered, Mutu started to get back to exercising and running, as his lungs got stronger, and on one of his runs, "It's Gonna Be Okay" by The Piano Guys came on his headphones. He immediately took inspiration from the song and reached out to his friends and performers to produce an inspiring video.&nbsp;</p><p>"I put that together just to give a little positive love and light in this time," he said. "I'm not normally like that. You can argue that it was perhaps a bit cheesy, but something just came over me, I want to do something just to show that even though we're not together, we're still all connected and supportive of each other."</p><figure><p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" loading="lazy" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9PgdYEnN1vY?feature=oembed" title="It's Gonna Be OK!" width="500"></iframe></p></figure><p>He's been keeping up with his <em>Moulin Rouge!</em> castmates on FaceTime and a group text thread. Amid the uncertainty as to when Broadway will be able to come back, Mutu said he found solace in his show, especially as they know they'll be back as soon as theatres reopen their doors.&nbsp;</p><p>"We don't know when exactly, but that's like a massive plus to all the cast. I'm very grateful for that," he said. "My heart goes out to all those shows that were opening and now may not be able to come back. It's tragic. It's really sad. I know it's not easy for anybody but that's something that keeps me a little more pepped up and buoyant about my situation. Ultimately we'll have a job at some point which is nice."</p><p>He and his wife, Kristen Martin, have created little routines for themselves in quarantine, like "cocktail o'clock" at 5 p.m., when they'll make drinks and call friends. They've also gotten into baking and cooking, with banana bread, pizza, and Italian dishes featuring heavily in the menu.&nbsp;</p><p>Mutu found a renewed love for <em>South Park</em> when he was in the hospital and a marathon came on Comedy Central as he was in and out of sleep in the nights. Now that he's home, he's been watching <em>Ozark</em> and also started <em>Cheers</em> from the start.&nbsp;</p><p>"It's makes me a bit melancholy, this situation, so it makes me nostalgic. I've been watching things like <em>I Love Lucy</em>, things that make you feel a bit warmer inside," he said. "We went through a phase of watching all the post-apocalyptic movies, <em>Outbreak</em> and <em>Contagion</em> and I was like, come on, we need to stop watching these."</p><p>Ultimately, Mutu is just grateful to be safe at home and to be on the other side of the virus. When asked if he had anything else to add about how he's spending his time, he immediately extended his thanks to the people on the front lines. &nbsp;</p><p>"I wanted to say a huge, huge thank you to all the front line people, whether they be doctors and nurses who are working god knows how many hours with probably no breaks and are in the thick of it, along with the delivery people and people in stores, People putting themselves at risk every day," he said. "That's a massive show of being unselfish and wanting people to have be able to live. It's a massive kudos to those people as well and thank you for doing what they're doing and putting themselves at risk every day. I'm very grateful for that and I think everyone should be as well."&nbsp;</p>

<p>It's been nearly 20 years since the residents of Gander, Newfoundland welcomed thousands of foreign plane passengers to their small town and provided for them in the wake of September 11, 2001. It's been 10 years since writers (and real-life couple) David Hein and Irene Sankoff traveled to Gander to interview the town's locals about that experience, gathering the source material for what would become&nbsp;<em>Come From Away</em>. It's been nearly five years since the musical opened on Broadway, making it the longest-running Canadian musical in Broadway history.</p><p>Now, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, the show will be immortalized as a film. A taped performance of&nbsp;<em><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/come-from-away" target="_blank">Come From Away</a>&nbsp;</em>will stream on Apple TV+ starting September 10, making the story available to audiences worldwide. When the film premieres, Hein and Sankoff will be in the very place they were when the Broadway production was about to open: in Gander, celebrating with the locals.</p><p>"There's going to be a special screening of this with all of our friends and people out there who we originally met 10 years ago, and I think it's going to be another dance party," Hein said. The first dance party took place in 2016, when Hein, Sankoff, and the Broadway cast visited Gander to perform a concert version of&nbsp;<em>Come From Away&nbsp;</em>— the first time Gander's residents would see it. The creators were unsure how the locals would react to the musical, but they responded with cheers and the ensuing festivities.</p><p>At first, "dance party" seems an unusual response to a show born of tragic events. In its 10-year lifespan, however,&nbsp;<em>Come From Away&nbsp;</em>has come to represent kindness, generosity, and human connection — not least of all for Hein and Sankoff. They travel to Gander frequently and consider the locals "practically family."</p><p>However, they never expected the&nbsp;<em>Come From Away&nbsp;</em>family to grow much larger than that. Hein "thought that maybe Canadian high schools would be forced to do the show as a historical project of some sort," and little else. They never expected even a fraction of the show's success, but it has almost become synonymous with the memory of 9/11 for the creators, and many audiences who have told the creators as much. Sankoff hopes&nbsp;<em>Come From Away</em>&nbsp;continues reaching people that way.</p><p>"I really hope it brings people another memory for that day," Sankoff said. "That's what people who are survivors or family members of people who were lost that day have told us — it doesn't erase that memory, but it gives you something else to think about."</p><p>As such Sankoff and Hein knew they needed to do something show-related as they approached the tragedy's 20th anniversary. Not to mention, amid the pandemic, even more audiences could use a few hours of hope, and the show's themes resonate even more strongly now for that reason. Hein said a film felt like "the next natural step in expanding our&nbsp;<em>Come From Away</em>&nbsp;audiences and family."&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>"We've said before that there's never a bad time to tell a story about people being good to one another, but particularly right now in the middle of a pandemic, I think it's important to find stories like this that remind us that we're part of a community," Hein said. <p>Going to the theatre can be a thrilling experience for first-timers, but even veteran audience members might need a reminder of the dos and don'ts. Here, we'll pull back the curtain on proper theatre etiquette and share a few insider secrets.</p><p><a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/whats-on/broadway/all-shows" target="_blank">Get tickets to a Broadway show on New York Theatre Guide.</a></p><h2><strong>Arrive on time.</strong></h2><p>Unlike on-demand entertainment, plays and musicals have an unmovable start time. If you're late, you will have to wait until an appropriate break in the action — or even intermission — to take your seat. If the show is a one act, you might end up missing it altogether! Double-check the performance's start time online or on your confirmation email, and try to arrive within plenty of time. Most Broadway houses open their doors approximately 30 minutes before show time.</p><h2><strong>Don't bring baggage.</strong></h2><p>Modern theatres might be a little more comfortable, but older venues are often tight on space. Leave large bags at home or at your hotel and be aware that many theatres will not let you bring in suitcases for security reasons. If you have a bulky coat, take advantage of the coat check — though be prepared to wait in line to retrieve it after the show. If you want to bring your coat in with you, keep it in your lap or under your seat. Don't hang it off the back of your chair, as it may interfere with other audience members' space.</p><h2><strong>Use the restroom wisely.</strong></h2><p>Remember how we said theatres could be cramped? That goes double for their restrooms, of which there are usually not many. Try to take care of business prior to arriving at the theatre or get it out of the way before the show begins. Trust us: You don't want to wait in that long intermission line or climb over your seatmates during the show.</p><h2><strong>Turn off your phone.</strong></h2><p>It's tempting to share this exciting experience with friends and family who couldn't join you, and many theatres will encourage you to check in or post about their show on social media. But always<em>&nbsp;</em>do so when the performance isn't actually happening. Texting, answering or making calls, and even checking the time on your phone is incredibly distracting to everyone else in the theatre, as well as the performers onstage. Yes, they can see and hear you too! To be safe from unexpected calls, forgotten alarms, and repetitive buzzing, turn your phone completely off before the show starts.</p><h2><strong>Don't take pictures.</strong></h2><p>Not only does a bright flash ruin the action (and even the glowing screen while you line up a shot is a harsh interruption in a dark theatre), but photographing or recording a professional production is illegal. If you try it, you will be ejected from the theatre and asked to delete the files or even surrender your device. It's better to just keep your phone, dark, silent, and out of sight. If you're allowed to photograph or record a part of a show (such as an encore number), an announcement will be made.</p><h2><strong>Enjoy your snacks quietly.</strong></h2><p>Many theatres have become more lenient about bringing concessions to your seat, but remember that all that packaging crinkles, crackles, and crunches. Try to nibble with as little disturbance as possible (that goes for mints and cough drops, too), and do not bring in outside food. Resist the urge to sing along or ask your neighbor what happened. Theatres are intimate spaces, and even the smallest disturbance can ruin the magical mood that the cast and crew have worked so hard to set.</p><p>That said, audibly reacting to a show (like gasping at a plot twist or laughing at a joke) is within the bounds of theatre etiquette, within reason. You're absolutely encouraged to respond — it's a sign to the performers that the show is engaging — as long as you're not consistently drowning out the onstage dialogue when the rest of the audience is silent.</p><h2><strong>Visit the stage door.</strong></h2><p>One of the best parts about live theatre is being able to tell the actors how much you enjoyed their performances. You can even politely ask them to sign your playbill or pose for a picture. If you're not sure where the stage door is located, an usher will be happy to direct you. Theatres will often set up barriers on the sidewalk to ensure their cast and crew is able to leave the stage door safely, and if there are celebrities in your show, then it might be extra crowded. Remain patient and polite, do not cross the barriers, and respect everyone else's experience.</p>

Their name is Lancelot! Taran Killam and Alex Brightman join the cast of the upcoming [*Spamalot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33129-spamalot-tickets) Broadway revival, playing at the [St. James Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre) from October 31. Opening night is November 16.

Killam returns to Broadway after playing King George III in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2017. He is better known, however, for his onscreen comedy performances on *madTV* and *Saturday Night Live*, in addition to multiple sitcoms. He will play Lancelot through January 7 only.

Brightman will step into the role from January 9. He is currently starring as Richard Dreyfuss in [*The Shark Is Broken*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28737-the-shark-is-broken-tickets) on Broadway, and he is also known for leading the Broadway musical adaptations of *Beetlejuice* and *School of Rock*. Brightman also played Lancelot at the Kennedy Center, where this *Spamalot* revival production premiered earlier this year under director/choreographer Josh Rhodes.

As [previously announced](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/spamalot-sets-broadway-cast-and-creative-team), multiple other cast members from that production will also return for the Broadway transfer: Christopher Fitzgerald as Patsy, James Monroe Iglehart as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as The Lady of the Lake, Jimmy Smagula as Sir Bedevere, Michael Urie as Sir Robin, and Nik Walker as Sir Galahad. Ease on down to Broadway! A revival of [*The Wiz*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27115-the-wiz-tickets) will begin performances this spring at the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre). The first performance is March 29, and opening night is April 17.

The announcement of the New York production comes as *The Wiz* opened its pre-Broadway national tour in Baltimore, Maryland — where the Tony Award-winning original 1975 production premiered — last night.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black retelling of *The Wizard of Oz*, infusing it with jazz, pop, ballet, and Black cultural influences. The show features a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls and others, including Luther Vandross. The 2023 revival features additional material by Amber Ruffin, also represented on Broadway with *Some Like It Hot*.

Schele Williams directs the 2023 production, which features choreography by JaQuel Knight, scenic design by Hannah Beachler; costume design by Sharen Davis; lighting design by Ryan J. O’Gara; sound design by Jon Weston; projection design by Daniel Brodie; wig design by Charles LaPointe; makeup design by Kirk Cambridge-Del Pesche; music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert; vocal and music arrangements by Allen René Louis; and dance music arrangements by Adam Blackstone.

The career paths of Josh Gad and [Andrew Rannells](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-rannells) happily keep on colliding – and paralleling. Right now, they’re at the [James Earl Jones Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/james-earl-jones-theatre) in [*Gutenberg! The Musical!*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/31399-gutenberg-the-musical-tickets), a show with two actors and just as many exclamation points. The comic duo play musical theatre composers writing a show about the inventor of the printing press.

Out there? Sure. Then again, the story of misbegotten Mormon missionaries in Uganda is also wacky. ## 2005 and 2006: Broadway debuts

In January 2005, Rannells took over as high school student Fender in *Hairspray*. Like a ’60s beehive hairdo, the actor ascended high to the lead role of teenage heartthrob Link Larkin. Rannells has stepped into key roles in other Broadway shows including Bob Gaudio in *Jersey Boys*, the title role in *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, and King George in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets). 

A year later, in January 2006, the musical *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* introduced Gad to Broadway audiences. He took over the role of allergy-prone William Barfee, a kid who uses his “magic foot” to write out words before spelling them.

## 2011: *The Book of Mormon*

In 2011, Rannells and Gad landed the lead roles in the irreverent, sometimes profane musical by Robert Lopez (*Frozen, Avenue Q*) and *South Park* creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Rannells and Gad starred as Elders Price and Cunningham: Mormon missionaries in Uganda who are young, eager, in over their head, and making things up as they go along. ## 2006 and 2016: The William Finn connection

Gad belted the kicky tune “Magic Foot” by William Finn in his Broadway debut in *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*. Rannells earned his second Tony nomination – Best Actor in a Supporting Role, as the ailing Whizzer – in the 2016 revival of *Falsettos*, a show with music, lyrics, and a book by Finn.

Beginning in October, audiences at performances of the Tony Award-winning musical on the sixth of each month will be treated to special events and giveaways.

Your chance to get tickets has rolled along! [*Merrily We Roll Along*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27417-merrily-we-roll-along-tickets) will offer a digital lottery for tickets to all Broadway performances, which begin September 19 at the [Hudson Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/hudson-theatre).

*Merrily We Roll Along* will offer [lottery tickets via TodayTix](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/27417-merrily-we-roll-along-on-broadway). Entrants must download the TodayTix app on iOS or Android, where the lottery will open for entries every Sunday for the following week's performances. The lottery will remain open until noon the day before each performance. Users can set an alert to be notified when the lottery opens each week, and sharing the lottery on social media earns extra entries.

Winners are drawn between 1 and 4 p.m. the day before the performance, and they will have 30 minutes after being notified by email or text to purchase their tickets on the app. 

Jonathan Groff, [Daniel Radcliffe](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/daniel-radcliffe), and Lindsay Mendez star in *Merrily We Roll Along*, the first Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's 1984 musical. Maria Friedman directs the production, which premiered off Broadway in 2022.

The show follows, in reverse, the disintegration of a 20-year friendship between three people in the showbiz industry. ## For the reunion we've all been waiting for: *Gutenberg! The Musical*

Alli Mauzey, of 2023 Best Musical Tony Award winner *Kimberly Akimbo*, "couldn’t tell you what [*Gutenberg! The Musical*] is about," but that [Andrew Rannells](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-rannells) and Josh Gad on stage together again thrills her enough to go.

That's high praise for the comedy skills of the pair, last seen together in the original 2011 cast of [*The Book of Mormon*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/127-the-book-of-mormon-tickets). And for those wondering, they now play hapless composers trying to pitch an inaccurate Broadway musical about Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press.

This new comedy about a reclusive hoarder cleaning up his life sees the reunion of a celebrated creative duo. Pulitzer-nominated writer Theresa Rebeck and Tony-nominated director Moritz Von Stuelpnagel join forces once more following 2018's *Bernhardt/Hamlet*. 

“I love Theresa Rebeck’s writing, and her and Moritz Von Stuelpnagel seem to have a great time working together, said Reg Rogers of *Merrily We Roll Along*.

## For something old that feels new: *Purlie Victorious*

*Purlie Victorious* premiered on Broadway in 1961, starring playwright Ossie Davis and his wife, Ruby Dee, as a preacher and his aide in a scheme to reclaim his inheritance from an oppressive white landowner. But it hasn't been on Broadway since, so this revival — led by Tony winner Leslie Odom, Jr. and Tony nominee Kara Young — is all but new for many audiences today. “With so many heavy hitters, it is a must-see for me,” said [*Hadestown*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets)'s Brit West.

"They are making history with this first ever revival of this play, and I cannot wait to see it!" said Sierra Boggess of *Harmony*. Echoed her co-star Chip Zien, "A great cast lead by the thrilling Leslie Odom, Jr. marking his return to Broadway. With the great [director] Kenny Leon at the helm, this is a 'comedy' that couldn't be timelier and a theatrical event not to be missed."

Two shows on Broadway are taking audiences back in time this fall. The stage adaptation of *Back to the Future*, which opened in August, zips to 1985 and 1955 at 88 miles per hour. According to *Wicked*'s William Youmans, the man who makes it all happen — scientist Doc Brown, played by Roger Bart — is reason enough to go: "Roger Bart is one of the funniest actors alive."

A few blocks away, the first Broadway revival of *Merrily We Roll Along* tells the story of a crumbling 20-year friendship in reverse. Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez play the doomed trio of pals Frank, Charley, and Mary.

"I have a special affection for *Merrily We Roll Along*," said Amelia Cormack of *Hadestown*. "It was our last show at drama school, and I got to play Mary, so it’s a definite nostalgia moment. Plus, this cast is incredible.”

## For an unexpected wave of emotion: *The Shark Is Broken*

This *Jaws*-inspired play, on through November 16, delivers great-white-sized laughs as it dramatizes the famous feud between Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider on set. What struck *Back to the Future* star Hugh Coles, though, was how moving it is: [Ian Shaw](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/interviews/ian-shaw-sinks-his-teeth-into-his-fathers-legacy-in-the-shark-is-broken) co-wrote and stars in *The Shark Is Broken* in his father's memory.

## For a niche story with universal appeal: *Jaja’s African Hair Braiding*

Jocelyn Bioh is known for her lighthearted, widely appealing comedies that shed light on the experiences of Black women in Africa and America. Her latest work, *Jaja’s African Hair Braiding*, tells a story of love, community, and gentrification by way of a group of women in the title Harlem salon.

## For a royally good laugh: *Spamalot*

This musical based on *Monty Python and the Holy Grail* hasn't held court on Broadway since winning the Best Musical Tony Award in 2005. Broadway stars with fond memories of the movie, the Broadway premiere, or their former co-stars now headlining the revival are now planning to take their seats at the round table.

“I am most excited to see my dear, dear friends (and former co-workers at *Hamilton*), James Monroe Iglehart and Nik Walker, in *Spamalot*," said *Merrily We Roll Along*'s Krystal Joy Brown. "I cannot wait to get to enjoy them in all of their hilarious glory! Also, I grew up on *Monty Python*, so it’s a bit nostalgic, and who doesn’t want a good laugh and a good time at the theatre?”

## For the next generation of Broadway: *How to Dance in Ohio*

This new musical, based on the Peabody Award-winning documentary about autistic young adults coming of age, is bringing many new faces to the world of Broadway. Director Sammi Cannold, writers Rebekah Greer Melocik and Jacob Yandura, choreographer Mayte Natalio, and all seven autistic lead actors make their debuts with this show.

## For a timely, touching drama: *Prayer for the French Republic*

Joshua Harmon's epic drama, about multiple generations of a French Jewish family facing similar doubts about assimilation and safety, received near-universal acclaim for its 2021 Off-Broadway premiere. It's perhaps more poignant and relevant now, as the show prepares to begin Broadway performances in December.

"I saw it in its Off-Broadway run and was blown away by the writing, direction, the performances - everything," Benko said. "It's a complex look at contemporary Jewish life and we need those plays on Broadway now more than ever."

Seven years later, he’s back – and not in a musical. Odom plays a traveling preacher on a mission in smalltown Georgia.

Based on the 1992 Steve Martin movie, the 2012 Broadway musical adaptation starred Raúl Esparza as a con man faking it as a holy roller. Odom, reprising his role from a 2010 Los Angeles run, played the upright Isaiah Sturdevant. The show’s reviews were mixed, but one critic called out Odom as “fantastic.”

Based loosely on the Shakespeare classic *Othello*, the hip-hop-flavored musical by Matt Sax and Eric Rosen is set in a war-torn, not-so-distant future, where broken ties between two brothers parallel the relationship between Othello and Iago. Odom played Markos, a warmongering commander. The Public Theater presentation ran in 2013.

In 2014, Odom starred alongside Lin-Minuel Miranda and [Karen Olivo](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/karen-olivo) in *Rent* creator Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical about a struggling songwriter, Jon, who’s questioning his future. In the weeklong run with the Encores! Off-Center series of rarely revived musicals, Odom played the artist’s best friend.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2015 landmark musical about Alexander Hamilton cast a brilliant spotlight on Odom, who confidently stepped into it and slayed as Aaron Burr, “the damn fool that shot” and killed the “$10 Founding Father.” He won a Tony and a Grammy and left indelible musical marks with “Wait for It,” “The Room Where It Happens,” and “Dear Theodosia.”

## *One Night in Miami...*

Odom earned an Oscar nomination for his portrait of Sam Cooke in this 2020 film directed by Regina King. Author Kemp Powers based the movie script on his 2013 play of the same name that imagines what went down at an actual February 1964 meeting of four African American icons: Cooke, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Jim Brown. Odom’s role included performing “A Change Is Gonna Come,” a song that would emerge as a civil rights anthem.

The Tony and Grammy Award-winning *Hamilton* star has a long career on and off Broadway, and he now returns to the stage to lead *Purlie Victorious*.

A new revival of *Uncle Vanya* will premiere on Broadway this spring, in a new translation by Heidi Schreck. Lila Neugebauer will direct the Lincoln Center Theater production, which begins performances at the [Vivian Beaumont Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/vivian-beaumont-theater) on April 2 ahead of an April 24 opening.

The classic play by Anton Chekhov follows the title character and his niece, whose lives are upended when Sonya's father and his wife move in. Past resentments, troubled romances, and family tensions erupt on a once-calm family farm.

*Uncle Vanya*, which premiered in 1899 and has received 10 prior Broadway productions, remains one of Chekhov's best-known and most beloved works. This new version is by Heidi Schreck, best known for her Pulitzer- and Tony-nominated work *What the Constitution Means to Me*.

Director Lila Neugebauer has two productions on Broadway this season: before *Uncle Vanya*, she directs Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins's [*Appropriate*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/31352-appropriate-tickets), starring [Sarah Paulson](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/sarah-paulson), in the fall season. She is also known for directing *The Waverly Gallery* on Broadway, *The Wolves* off Broadway, and the film *Causeway* starring Jennifer Lawrence.

The *Uncle Vanya* creative team also includes set designer Mimi Lien, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Lap Chi Chu, and sound designers Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake.

Casting has yet to be announced.
