‘A Letter to Harvey Milk’ musical charity benefit to stream in April

The off-Broadway musical was at Theatre Row in 2018.

A Letter to Harvey Milk is the latest musical to receive a benefit reading, with money going to HIAS and The Actor's Fund. The upcoming stream is available from April 22 - 25, with original cast members returning to the show.

Set in 1980s San Francisco, a Jewish butcher named Harry completes the latest writing assignment for his younger teacher, Barbara. Harry writes to Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay political leader, with Harry and Barbara forming a deeper connection.

In a review for New York Theatre Guide of the 2018 Theatre Row production, Constance Rodgers praised the musical's message, saying: "the effects of man's inhumanity to man are far reaching and the wounds long lasting." 

Casting for the A Letter to Harvey Milk reading includes Adam Heller as Harry and Cheryl Stern as Barbara, along with Julia Knitel, Michael Bartoli, Jeremy Greenbaum, Aury Krebs and Ravi Roth.

A Letter to Harvey Milk is by Lesléa Newman, with music by Laura I. Kramer, lyrics by Ellen M. Schwartz and direction by Evan Pappas.

A Letter to Harvey Milk is available to stream from April 22 - 25.
