The nominations for the 2022 Academy Awards came out on February 8, announced by actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan on a livestream. Multiple movie musicals received nominations, including Steven Spielberg's West Side Story remake; Lin-Manuel Miranda's directorial debut, tick, tick... BOOM!, and the upcoming Cyrano, based on the same-named 2018 musical about Cyrano de Bergerac.

Of these movie musicals, West Side Story received the most nominations at seven, including Best Picture and Best Director for Spielberg. Ariana DeBose, who has appeared on Broadway in musicals like Hamilton and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Anita. She follows in the footsteps of Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for playing the same role in the 1961 West Side Story film.

West Side Story was also nominated in the costume design, sound, cinematography, and production design categories. The film already won at the Golden Globe Awards, where it secured Best Picture — Comedy or Musical and acting awards for Ariana DeBose (Best Supporting Actress) and Rachel Zegler (Best Leading Actress, as Maria).

tick, tick... BOOM! received two nods: the movie was nominated for Excellence in Film Editing, and Andrew Garfield, a Tony Award winner for his performance in Angels in America on Broadway, received a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Rent composer Jonathan Larson. In January, Garfield won a Golden Globe Award for the role.

tick, tick... BOOM! is not Miranda's only project up for Oscars this year. Encanto, the animated Disney Pixar musical film for which Miranda wrote the music and lyrics, received three nominations: Best Animated Film, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song, for "Dos Orugitas." If Miranda wins an Oscar for either tick, tick... BOOM! or Encanto, he will achieve the rare EGOT status, having won at least one Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.

Cyrano received one nomination for Best Costume Design.

In addition to the movie musical nominations, multiple stage actors received nominations for non-musical film work. Denzel Washington was nominated for Best Actor in the title role in The Tragedy of Macbeth, which was also nominated for Best Cinematography. (A new stage production of Macbeth is also coming to Broadway this spring, starring Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga.) Broadway veteran Dame Judi Dench and Jessie Buckley, who is currently starring in Cabaret in London, are going up against DeBose in the Best Supporting Actress category for their work in Belfast and The Lost Daughter, respectively.

The theme of this year's Academy Awards is "Movie Lovers Unite," and multiple guest presenters joined Ross and Jordan in announcing categories of nominations. These included the New York Fire Department and Phylicia Rashad, currently on Broadway in Skeleton Crew.
