Get Dog Day Afternoon tickets on New York Theatre Guide to catch this buzzy new play, based on real events, starring Emmy Award winner Jon Bernthal (The Odyssey, The Bear) and two-time Emmy Award winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Fantastic Four: First Steps, The Bear). Inspired by the Life magazine article "The Boys in the Bank," which turned into a hit film, Dog Day Afternoon plays on Broadway spring 2026 for a strictly limited run.
New York, 1972: in Dog Day Afternoon on Broadway, go back to a time when the Vietnam War looms large, Watergate headlines flood the news, and one man’s desperate act captivates the nation. During that sweltering summer, first-time crook Sonny Wortzik and his friends attempt to rob the First Brooklyn Savings Bank. The plan is a bust: Stevie loses his nerve and flees. Sonny discovers that they arrived after the daily cash pickup, leaving them only to find $1,100 in cash.
A ridiculous drama that proves truth is stranger than fiction, the events that inspired Dog Day Afternoon captivated the nation: the bank robbery should have taken mere minutes, and hours later the US was transfixed as the story became the hottest news — and then history.
Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis (Between Riverside and Crazy) writes this new version of the story, appearing live on stage for the first time, and Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold (King Charles III) directs. Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach, stars of the screen, are famous for their roles on The Bear. Now, they come together to play opposite each other in another pressure cooker of a story on Broadway.
The Academy Award-winning film based on the robbery starred Al Pacino, John Cazale, James Broderick, and Charles Durning. Now, see the story live with today's stars: tickets to Dog Day Afternoon in New York will be available here soon.
