2022 Tony Award nominees announced: 'A Strange Loop' leads

The 2022 Tony Awards nominations have been announced, ahead of the ceremony on June 12. The first ceremony to return fully in person and at its normal time of year since the pandemic, this year's ceremony will be at Radio City Music Hall and be broadcast on CBS. Adrienne Warren (a 2020 Tony winner for Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) and Joshua Henry announced this year's nominations. A total of 35 shows were eligible for this year's Tony Awards, all of which opened between February 20, 2020 and May 4, 2022. Of them all, the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Strange Loop secured the most nominations with 11, including Best Musical.

MJ The Musical and Paradise Square trailed A Strange Loop in the musical category with 10 nominations each. In the play category, The Lehman Trilogy received the most nominations with 8, followed by for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf with 7 and The Skin of Our Teeth with 6.

In addition to the competitive awards, James C. Nicola, the artistic director of New York Theatre Workshop, is receiving a 2022 Special Tony Award.
