A Strange Loop

Following a multi-award winning world premiere at Playwrights Horizons, A Strange Loop, written by Michael R. Jackson and directed by Stephen Brackett, makes its Broadway debut in spring 2022. A Strange Loop tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

A Strange Loop is a musical by a Black, gay writer about a Black, gay writer working on a show about a Black, gay writer. The main character is Usher, who works a day job he hates as a theatre usher. His passion is writing, and he wants to make a go of that, so he spends his spare time working on an original musical, essentially about "himself." The main character of Usher's show is, like Usher, a writer who hates his day job and wants to follow his passion.

But it's not so easy for Usher: The one professional writing gig he gets — ghostwriting a new Tyler Perry play — he hates. He's at a constant war with himself as an artist too, battling the self-deprecating, straight-shooting thoughts in his head, brought to life in A Strange Loop by a raucous ensemble. He has to contend with his own demons in order to free himself from his "strange loop" and become not just the writer with the day job who wants to make it, but the writer who makes it.

A Strange Loop had its world premiere off-Broadway in 2019. The acclaimed production won Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, Obie, Outer Critic's Circle, Off-Broadway Alliance, New York Drama Critic's Circle, and Drama League Awards, including multiple Best Musical accolades, Best Actor nods for Larry Owens as Usher, and awards for Jackson's book and songs. Jackson himself won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for A Strange Loop, becoming the first Black person to do so for writing a musical.

The musical went on to run in Washington, D.C., at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. With the exception of Owens, the cast and leading creative team — including director Brackett and choreographer Raja Feather Kelly — reprised their roles for the D.C. production, which was extended by a week due to popular demand. The same team from A Strange Loop in D.C. now moves with the production to Broadway.

All the songs in 'A Strange Loop' on Broadway
May 24, 2022

A Strange Loop was an instant phenomenon upon premiering off Broadway in 2019. It's rare that a show gets a cast recording before heading to Broadway — and even rarer that a show gets a Pulitzer Prize before heading there. In fact, A Strange Loop's creator, Michael R. Jackson, was the first musical writer to achieve that honor. His show is now also the recipient of 11 Tony Award nominations, the most of any show in 2022.

Everything you need to know about 'A Strange Loop' on Broadway

After premiering at Playwrights Horizons in 2019 and making a pit stop in Washington, D.C., Michael R. Jackson's A Strange Loop has circled back to New York for its Broadway debut. Billed as a “Big, Black, & Queer-Ass American Musical,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning show centers on Usher, a Black, queer musical theatre writer (created by Jackson, a Black, queer musical theatre writer) who's working on an original show about a Black, queer musical theatre writer. That endless loop gives the musical its name.

Jackson's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is set to play the Lyceum Theatre in spring 2022, Director Stephen Brackett and choreographer Raja Feather Kelly, who are currently helming the show's pre-Broadway engagement at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., will also direct and choreograph the Broadway production.

Our A Strange Loop Review

“WOW!” I thought to myself as my body leapt to its feet on its own volition to applaud A Strange Loop. “This must be how people who saw the first performances of Show Boat, Oklahoma!, Company, Rent, or Hamilton felt.” Though I’ve witnessed and studied the innovations in each of those musicals, none of them are as revolutionary as what Michael R. Jackson has accomplished with his Pulitzer Prize... Read more

Michael R. Jackson, the living playwright, not to be confused with Michael Jackson the dead pop star, has written a new somewhat autobiographical musical A Strange Loop that is having its world premiere at Playwrights Horizons. But don’t discount the dead pop star angle too quickly. Being a young, black, queer, musical theater writer with the name of one of the most (in)famous pop music...
