Could the much anticipated stage adaptation of the 1997 animated musical Anastasia be heading to Broadway for the 2016-2017 season? It has been officially confirmed that the musical will stage its world premiere at Hartford Stage from 12 May to 12 June 2016, which would be fitting for a Fall 2016 Broadway premiere.

The stage adaptation is directed by Tony Award winner Darko Tresnjak, currently represented on the Great White Way by A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder, and features a book by Terrenca McNally and music & lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

Synopsis: "The daughter of the last Russian Tsar, Nicolas II, Anastasia is found by two Russian con men, Dimitri and Vladimir, who seek the reward that her grandmother, the Dowager Empress Marie, promised to the ones who'll find her. But the evil mystic of the Tsar family, Rasputin, still wants the Romanov family to be destroyed forever."

Twentieth Century Fox's 1997 animated feature Anastasia was nominated for two Oscars: Best Score (Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and David Newman) and Best Original Song (Ahrens and Flaherty) for "Journey To The Past." It featured the voice talents of Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Christopher Lloyd, Hank Azaria, Bernadette Peters, Kirsten Dunst, Andrea Martin, and Dame Angela Lansbury.
