Summerworks 2008 Clubbed Thumb's festival of new plays


Clubbed Thumb present their 13th annual summer festival of new plays, Summerworks 2008 at The Ohio Theatre from 8 - 14 Jun 2008.

The festival kicks off on the 4 Jun 2008, with a free opening night celebration Constitutional Convention: billed as 'a raucous opening night celebration in which teams of artists will propose new legislation that you will have the chance to vote on� or veto.'

Summerworks 2008 will present three new plays:


Gentleman Caller
Written by: Ann Marie Healy
Directed by: Brooke O'Harra
Synopsis: The days are so hot and the nights so long and that damn war just keeps going on and on. An aged ingenue, a failed go-getter, and a maid with real big dreams sit and wait and wonder: When will he call? Oh let it be soon. Soon around here is just not soon enough...

Ann Marie Healy's (playwright) 'Dearest Eugenia Haggis' was produced in Clubbed Thumb's Summerworks '05 (published in the anthology Funny, Strange, Provocative: Seven Plays by Clubbed Thumb) and also produced Healy's Beach (Summerworks '00) and Somewhere Someplace Else (Summerworks '03). Healy is an affiliated artist with Clubbed Thumb; a member of MCC's Playwrights Coalition; and a member of 13P.

Brooke O'Harra (Director) is a co-founder of The Theatre of a Two-headed Calf. Recent productions include 'Drum Of The Waves Of Horikawa,' 'Panic,' 'Major Barbara,' 'The Cataract,' and Fielding's 'The Life And Death Of Tom Thumb The Great' (La Mama E.T.C.). Brooke is developing a new play Maria/Stuart with playwright Jason Grote.


Vendetta Chrome
Written by: Sally Oswald
Directed by: Alexis Poledouris
Synopsis: It's the 90's. The 1890's. And poor Vendetta has always been a bit behind the rest of the girls in her elocution class. But now it's up to her to save her school, her family, and herself - and it's all in the dance moves.

Sally Oswald (Playwright) recently wrote a libretto for Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum's London Symphony Chorus commission and is at work on the text for Dan Hurlin's 'Everyday Uses for Sight No. 4: Disfarmer.' With Jennifer Tsuei she curates the Experimental Text Festival at the Ontological-Hysteric Theater (New York).

Alexis Poledouris (Director) graduated from Columbia University's MFA Directing Program and has directed many new plays, including: 'Cherubina, 'All This Beautiful Life,' 'Baby Face,' 'Momma,' 'Dirge,' 'Food for Fish,' 'God's Waiting Room,' and 'Cascando.' She is a member of The Constant Theater and Dodeska Performance Ensemble.


Slavey
Written by: Sigrid Gilmer
Directed by: Robert O'Hara
Synopsis: In a not so distant future, Nora and Robert find themselves climbing the steep social ladder of the super rich � big promotion, bigger house, and a brand new slave. But when growing pains kick in and consumer and consumed find themselves on unexpected sides of the table it can only mean one thing � big trouble.

Sigrid Gilmer's (Playwright) full-length plays include 'The Great White Way,' 'Ball Game,' 'Slavey' and 'Axiom.' In December of 2007, 'Slavey' was developed at Clubbed Thumb's New Play Boot Camp. Gilmer is a graduate of Cal State LA with a BA in Theatre and MFA in Playwriting from the California Institute of the Arts.

Robert O'hara (Director) received an OBIE Award for his Direction of 'In The Continuum' at Primary Stage/Perry Street Theater. He wrote and directed the World Premiere of 'Insurrection: Holding History' at the New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theater (Oppenheimer Award for Best New American Play).
