Signature Theatre sets 2022-23 season

The season includes three world premiere-plays and one Off-Broadway premiere.

Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre has announced the full slate of shows in its 2022-23 season, which kicks off in the fall. Four plays make up the lineup at the Pershing Square Signature Center, including an Off-Broadway-premiere play and three world premieres by acclaimed writers.

The season will begin with the world premiere of My Broken Language, written and directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and In the Heights book writer Quiara Alegría Hudes. The show is adapted from Hudes's memoir of the same name and centers on six women who lived in a Philadelphia barrio in the 1990s. The women relive their experience of living at the intersection of multiple marginalized communities, telling their stories with a blend of monologues, dance, live music, and literary reading. Performances run from October 18 to November 27.

Following that show up in the winter will be the Off-Broadway premiere of A Bright New Boise. Oliver Butler directs this play by Samuel D. Hunter, whose acclaimed play A Case for the Existence of God is currently wrapping up Signature's 2021-22 season. This dark comedy won the Obie Award in 2011 and centers on a lapsed evangelical named Will, who's working at a Hobby Lobby in Boise. He's recently left his northern Idaho hometown following tragedy, and now he's working to form new relationships with his coworkers and reckon with his faith. Performances run January 27 to March 12, 2023.

The winter continues with two-time Pulitzer finalist Sarah Ruhl's Letters from Max, a world-premiere play based on a 2012 memoir she co-wrote with her student, Letters from Max: a Poet, a Teacher, and a Friendship. The Max in question is the late poet and her former student Max Ritvo, and his and Ruhl's correspondences, in which they learn and grow with each other's help, is adapted for the stage with a mix of dialogue, poetry, and ritual. Performances run February 7 to March 19, 2023.

Rounding out Signature's season in the spring is the world premiere of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins's Grass. Jenkins also directs his play about an out-of-work actor who's evicted and must go live with his father on a Texas island. To get there, he has to go on a road trip with his mother at the wheel. As the show's description states, "Hilarity ensues. Or doesn't. In either case, History narrates." Performances run from May 16 to June 25, 2023.

Casting and additional creative team for each of these productions has yet to be announced.
