Chicago is the second longest-running show in Broadway history, behind Andrew Lloyd Webber's infamous Phantom, and still holds the record of being the longest-running musical revival and longest-running American musical on the Great White Way... And long may it continue to razzle dazzle us!
No wonder countless stars from the outside world have wanted to grace the Broadway stage in this classic Kander & Ebb Tony-winning tuner. The list reads like a who's who, from Usher to Jerry Springer, Patrick Swayze to Brandy, and from Amy Spanger to Brooke Shields, so many have utilised the opportunity to play limited engagements in Chicago, boost their appeal and musical credibility, and get bitten by the theatre bug in the process.
On the other side of the spectrum, some of the company's principals have been with the show (off and on) for quite some time and continue to delight with every performance. LaVon Fisher-Wilson' brassy and sultry Mama Morton, Raymond Bokhour's ever-loveable Amos and R. Lowe's skilled, gender-bending performance as Mary Sunshine are always crowd-pleasing and essential parts of the production, offering the degree of stability that takes it smoothly through its many cast changes. And Amra-Faye Wright has become perhaps the most recognised and celebrated Velma Kelly in the show's history. The native South African has mastered the role of many years, both on Broadway and in the West End and in international tours across the globe. In 2010, she even became the first actress to have performed the role in both English and Japanese!
Although this production is the ripe old age of twenty years now, the terrific onstage band makes those Kander & Ebb classics as fresh as ever. Chicago proves that you don't need to bombard your audience with a number of lavish sets or elaborate costume changes to put together a winning musical. All you need is an intriguing story, that unforgettable Bob Fosse-style choreography... and "All That Jazz"!
