What can be said about this week's #ShowOfTheWeek that hasn't been said already? Fiddler on the Roof is one of, if not the most classic musicals in Broadway history. Since its original premiere in 1964, it has been revived once every single decade on the Great White Way - 1976, 1981, 1990, 2004 and the current 2015 revival, which is still bringing in multi-generational theatregoers at the Broadway Theatre.
At this past weekend's 70th Annual Tony Awards, the cast performed during the telecast and the production earned nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Choreography (for Hofesh Shechter) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (for six-time Tony nominee Danny Burstein). All these accolades just go to show that audiences and critics alike are certainly not growing tired of the musical masterpiece any time soon.
It was truly a delight for me to see Mr Burstein in his element and relishing the iconic role of Tevye in this production, sovereignly directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher. The joy on his face as he participated in Schechter's expertly choreographed musical numbers never failed to make me smile from ear to ear as well. He has a relaxed demeanour about him that makes the audience instantly warm to Tevye, but is also skilled at bringing over his complex intricacies, as he deals with each of his daughter's emerging situations. Particularly his scenes with Chava (Melanie Moore), who marries outside of the Jewish faith, are devastatingly moving. His self-turmoil wrought with the battle between the love for his daughter and the strict rules of his faith, is evident in his whole body language and we are swept into this inner struggle with him.
The score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick is as timeless as ever and the anthemic number "Tradition" proves once again stirring, played out by the vast ensemble from this immense Broadway Theatre stage.
Whether you are from a younger generation, experiencing this classic musical for the very first time, or you are a grandparent and it has accompanied you through life, there is something undeniably special about a shared experience that truly appeals to all. So get the whole family together and witness a modern piece of theatrical history.
