Heads up! Award-winning actor and producer Bruce Willis will join The Burgess Group to mount <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/my-mothers-severed-head">My Mother's Severed Head</a> at Theatre One on <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/theatre-row">Theatre Row</a>. Performances will begin off Broadway September 10 ahead of a September 13 opening.In Charles Cissel's play, the playwright Robert and his father find themselves constantly fighting following the death of Robert's mother. But she's not entirely out of the picture — she was decapitated, and her head rests in the family home, talking at Robert as though she never left. She just has to figure out how to get her head back onto her body.&nbsp;The cast for My Mother's Severed Head includes Camilo Sanchez Lobo, Luis Alberto Garcia, Katelyn Sparks, Nana Ponceleon, and Giancarlo Herrera. Signature Theatre's production of Annie Baker's <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/infinite-life">Infinite Life</a>&nbsp;has been postponed due to "ongoing health and safety concerns," the production announced Friday.The show was originally scheduled to run at the <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/pershing-square-signature-center">Pershing Square Signature Center</a> from October 5 to November 7. New performance dates have not yet been specified."Signature will continue, in discussion with artists, to evaluate on a case-by-case basis how to proceed with other programming planned for this season," a representative for the theatre said in a statement.&nbsp;"The company and artist agree that this is the best choice for this show at this time."Other upcoming shows at the Pershing include&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/twilight-los-angeles-1992">Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/confederates">Confederates</a>, <a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/grass">Grass</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/a-case-for-the-existence-of-god">A Case for the Existence of God</a>. As of August 20, these shows' runs remain unchanged.

The <a href="/theatres/public-theater">Public Theater</a> has announced its 2021-22 season, returning to in-person productions at its Astor Place theatre for the first time since the pandemic began. The lineup includes seven new productions, including multiple world and New York premiere plays and musicals.The season opens with <a href="/show/the-visitor">The Visitor</a>, initially scheduled for the Public's 2019-20 season. Daniel Sullivan directs the world-premiere musical based on the independent film of the same name about a college professor seeking renewed purpose in life. The show features music by Tom Kitt, lyrics by Brian Yorkey, and a book by Yorkey and Kwame Kwei-Armah. Performances begin on Oct. 7 ahead of an opening date of Nov. 4.Initial casting includes Jacqueline Antaramian, Robert Ariza, Anthony Chan, Alysha Deslorieux, Delius Doherty, C.K. Edwards, Will Erat, Sean Ewing, Ahmad Maksoud, Dimitri Joseph Moïse, Takafumi Nikaido, David Hyde Pierce, Paul Pontrelli, and Ari'el Stachel.The production will be followed by the world premiere of Erika Dickerson-Despenza's play <a href="/show/cullud-wattah">Cullud Wattah</a>, another carryover from the 2019-20 season. The show, which follows three generations of Black women facing the Flint, Michigan water contamination crisis, won the 2021 Susan Smith Blackburn prize.Initial casting includes Crystal Dickinson, Lizan Mitchell, Andrea Patterson and Alicia Pilgrim, and Candis C. Jones will direct. Cullud Wattah begins performances Nov. 2 with an opening date of Nov. 17.The next scheduled production is Out of Time, a world-premiere collection of monologues written by Jaclyn Backhaus, Sam Chanse, Mia Chung, Naomi Iizuka, and Anna Ouyang Moench. The production is&nbsp;conceived and directed by Obie Award winner Les Waters and commissioned and produced by NAATCO. Actors 60 and older will perform these monologues, all by Asian American playwrights, in a run scheduled for February 2022. Specific dates have yet to be announced.The Barrington Stage Company and Ma-Yi Theater Company Production have partnered with the Public for the next production of the season: <a href="/show/the-chinese-lady">The Chinese Lady</a> by Lloyd Suh. The play about Afong Moy, the first Chinese woman to come to America and who became a public spectacle, will be directed by Ralph B. Peña and begin performances in February 2022. Casting and performance dates will be announced at a later time.The world-premiere musical Suffs will follow, with a book, music, and lyrics by Shaina Taub and direction by Leigh Silverman. Taub's show follows a group of suffragists, or "suffs," who undertook the public fight for women's right to vote. The production is scheduled for March 2022, with casting and dates to be announced.The Public will then present the New York premiere of <a href="/show/the-vagrant-trilogy">The Vagrant Trilogy</a> by Public Emerging Writers Group alum Mona Mansour. Originally scheduled for the theater's 2019-20 season, her play about a family affected by war over Palestinian displacement is now set to open in March 2022. Mark Wing-Davey will direct, and dates and casting will come at a later date.Lastly, the Public and The National Black Theatre will co-produce James Ijames' play Fat Ham, a reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet centered around a modern-day Black college student seeking to avenge his father's murder. Saheem Ali will direct the New York-premiere play set for May 2022. Casting and performance dates will be announced at a later date.The Public's season will also feature multiple ongoing performance series. These include weekly releases from a new digital album by Daniel Alexander Jones, Altar No. 1 - Aten, beginning Sept. 22, as well as various performances at Joe's Pub beginning in October. Niegel Smith will also direct Plays for the Plague Year, a work resulting from Suzan-Lori Parks's endeavor to write one play a day for a year beginning on March 13, 2020. Bless us, everyone! A Sherlock Carol, a new play written and directed by Mark Shanahan, will open off Broadway at <a href="/theatres/new-world-stages">New World Stages</a> this holiday season. The eight-week run will begin Nov. 11 ahead of a Nov. 22 opening night, and close Jan. 2, 2022.In the play, a now-grown Tiny Tim enlists the help of Sherlock Holmes to investigate Ebenezer Scrooge's mysterious death. While Holmes is working to solve the crime on Christmas Eve, the ghosts of the past, present, and future visit him as they did Scrooge.New World Stages will have Covid-19 safety protocols in place. After performances were suspended due to the pandemic, <a href="/show/the-woman-in-black">The Woman in Black</a> will reopen to scare more audiences in New York. The Woman in Black is at the McKittrick Hotel from October 21, with an opening night on October 24 and performances to Jan. 30, 2022.The site-specific adaptation of The Woman in Black imagines the ghost story in a pub, and is directed by Robin Herford. Speaking about the show's return, Herford said: ""I am thrilled that New York audiences will again get to experience our production of The Woman in Black.I am particularly excited to take the show back to how it was originally staged for its world premiere in Scarborough - an intimate space which brings the audience up close and personal with the action."The Woman in Black will reunite actors Ben Porter and David Acton, who starred in pre-pandemic performances. They were both nominated for Drama League Awards, and The Woman in Black was nominated in the outstanding play revival category.The Woman in Black was first staged in Scarborough, England, before transferring to the Fortune Theatre in London in 1989. After months of free pop-up performances in New York City, the festival NY PopsUp will come to a conclusion this weekend. The final event as part of&nbsp;NY PopsUp&nbsp;will take place tomorrow, August 7 at 4:00pm at Hudson River Park's Pier 76.The upcoming NY PopsUp event will star Tony Award-winning actor Gavin Creel, who has recently starred in Broadway musicals such as Hello, Dolly! and Waitress. Creel will be joined by Amber Iman, who <a href="/news-features/amber-iman-leads-ny-popsup-concert-at-broadway-theatre">sang earlier during the festival at the Broadway Theatre</a>. Sasha Allen, Jo Lampert, Whitney White, Ayodele Casel will also take part, with more acts to be revealed at the show.NY PopsUp events have been taking place across New York City for 25 weeks. During the festival, there have been 300 performances, with 634 artists taking part. Speaking about NY PopsUp, Governor Cuomo said: "Through NY PopsUp, we were able to share the unparalleled experience of live entertainment with communities all across the state, while supporting New York's arts professionals with events and venues designed to promote social distancing."During the festival, events took place at the <a href="/theatres/st-james-theatre">St. James Theatre</a> and the <a href="/theatres/broadway-theatre">Broadway Theatre</a>. Audible Theater will produce Long Day's Journey into Night, with previews at the <a href="/theatres/minetta-lane-theatre">Minetta Lane Theatre</a> from January 11, ahead of an opening night on January 23 and performances to February 20.Set at a Connecticut seaside town in 1912, Long Day's Journey into Night centres around the Tyrone family. The family are dealing with numerous problems, including wife Mary's morphine addiction. Long Day's Journey into Night is inspired by Eugene O'Neill's upbringing, and was published posthumously in 1956.Bill Camp will play James Tyrone. Camp recently starred as Mr. Shaibel in The Queen's Gambit on Netflix, but has also starred in The Crucible and Death of a Salesman on Broadway.&nbsp;Elizabeth Marvel, Camp's husband, will play Mary Tyrone. On Broadway, Marvel has starred in Top Girls and Picnic, but has also been in television shows such as House of Cards and Unbelievable.Ato Blankson-Wood will play Edmund Tyrone. Blankson-Wood is currently nominated for a Tony Award for playing Gary in Slave Play. Theatre ticketing platform TodayTix is hosting its annual ticket sale, and we rounded up the best deals on Broadway shows, attractions, experiences, and more.

[Danny DeVito](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/danny-devito)'s return to Broadway, in the new comedy play [*I Need That*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28198-i-need-that-on-broadway), is an event unto itself. "It's exciting as can be," he said, a statement his many fans would likely echo.

But there's only one thing more exciting than a DeVito on stage, and that's two DeVitos on stage.

The Emmy-winning, Tony-nominated star of *Taxi* and *It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia* now performs opposite Lucy DeVito, his daughter with a sizable stage and screen resume of her own. Fittingly, they play father and daughter through December 30 in *I Need That* — albeit a father, Sam, with a hoarding problem that requires his daughter Amelia's intervention lest he face eviction.

Working together for weeks on end might cause similar tension in some families, especially ones who've never shared the stage. Danny DeVito has only been on Broadway once before, in 2017's *The Price*, and Lucy DeVito is making her debut. But their offstage relationship is stronger than ever.

"To hang out with her every day for months doing the rehearsals, and now doing the play every night, I just can't wait to go to work," Danny DeVito said.

"Working with my dad has brought me and him closer," Lucy DeVito echoed. "We're buddies! He's my best friend! We're having so much fun."

She went on to describe her dad as "the funniest dude ever," but when asked what he admires about his daughter, the elder DeVito got more thoughtful. "I always admire her because she has a great work ethic," he said. "She's very funny and she's genuine and loving, but she also takes it very seriously."

Their bond is apparent to everyone else involved in *I Need That*, too, including Ray Anthony Thomas, who stars opposite the DeVitos as a longtime friend of Sam's; playwright Theresa Rebeck; and director Moritz von Stuelpnagel (he and Rebeck are another dynamic duo, having collaborated five times before).

"If somebody discovers something in their performance, the other one will often break character because they're so proud to see what they've come up with," von Stuelpnagel said. "I have to remind them, 'Stay in character!'"

He may joke about the DeVitos derailing his rehearsals, but he sincerely added, "That joy and admiration and respect has been infectious to the whole room."

Lance Foster and Suzy Jane Hunt, who understudy Thomas and Lucy DeVito, respectively, attested to that, too. "It's rare to see family members work together, let alone family members from different generations," Foster noted. "I've never seen a mother and a daughter or a father and a daughter [perform together on Broadway]."

"It makes me miss my dad, honestly, to watch them interact, and the way you can't quite tell if they're acting, running a scene, or chatting in the corners," Hunt added.

But as much as the DeVitos's stage collaboration is a monumental occasion, hearing them talk about how they "goof off all the time" (Lucy's words) and share cannolis backstage (one of their many weekly rituals, also including a taco Tuesday), you'd think they were simply spending ordinary quality time like any other father and daughter.

Said Lucy DeVito: "We are able to talk about the work, and then we're able to leave that aside, and then my family's going to come, and we're all going to have Thanksgiving."

Harold Prince, affectionately known within the industry as "Hal," went down in history as the driving force — either as director, producer, or both — behind some of the 20th century's most beloved musicals. *West Side Story*. *Fiddler on the Roof*. [*Cabaret*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32847-cabaret-tickets). [*Sweeney Todd*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26216-sweeney-todd-on-broadway-tickets). *The Phantom of the Opera*. The list goes on for miles.

But before any of those were storied classics, they were unknown, original musicals breaking into a busy Broadway scene. New works were Prince's bread-and-butter throughout his career, right up until his death in 2019. Truly, *right* up: Mere days before his passing, he was reportedly giving notes on his final project, the musical [*How to Dance in Ohio*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32763-how-to-dance-in-ohio-tickets), which debuted on Broadway on November 15.

Based on Alexandra Shiva's 2015 documentary of the same name, *How to Dance in Ohio* dramatizes the stories of autistic young adults preparing for a spring formal dance, part of a social skills program at their group counseling center. Shiva was inspired to make the documentary to not only [celebrate autistic people](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/how-to-dance-in-ohio-pioneers-a-more-accessible-broadway) and their coming of age, but also shed light on the challenges they face as they begin to age out of institutional support. 

One such autistic person who inspired this project? Lucy Chaplin, Prince's now-25-year-old granddaughter.

She is not a character in the show or a subject in the documentary, but the film is dedicated to her. Prince, similarly, wanted to produce a Broadway show about autism in her honor. And it just so happened that, through a seemingly destined chain of events, *Ohio* came full-circle to land on his desk.

It was 2017 when Shiva approved writers Jacob Yandura and Rebekah Greer Melocik to musicalize *Ohio*. "Around the same time, we met Ben Holtzman and Sammy Lopez, who are two [of *Ohio*'s] early producers," Yandura recalled. "They were looking for a show to just start from the ground up."

"Ben was working in the Hal Prince office, and Hal said he wanted to do a show about autism. And Ben was like, 'Well, I think we have the right people for you.'"

Prince almost immediately signed on to direct, and he, Yandura, and Melocik worked closely on *How to Dance in Ohio* for the next two years. Prince staged early workshops. He took detailed notes in the margins of three copies of the script. He, the writers, and the producers recorded every meeting they had about the show.

"He gave us all of his wisdom right from the beginning," Yandura said. And suddenly, on July 31, 2019, that written and recorded wisdom, and the team's memories of their collaboration, were all that was left.

Director Sammi Cannold eventually took over the reins from Prince thanks to Yandura, who invited her for a coffee meeting via Instagram that led to an interview for the job. Like Prince, she has an autistic relative (her brother) and was already familiar with the documentary.

"I was very daunted and humbled by the potential task of picking up where this legend left off," Cannold remembered. "Those [recordings and notes] have been my north star as I've been working through the show and trying to honor the vision of what he intended this piece to be, while, of course, never actually being him."

"To make my Broadway debut while trying to uphold that that vision has been the greatest honor," she continued. Yandura, Melocik, and a majority of the [principal cast](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/meet-the-cast-of-how-to-dance-in-ohio-on-broadway) make their Broadway debuts alongside her, too, after they finally premiered the completed show in Syracuse in 2022.

The late, 21-time Tony Award-winning director and producer was heavily involved in the musical's development and was set to direct the show before his death.

She's livin' it up on top! Grammy Award winner Ani DiFranco will make her Broadway debut in [*Hadestown*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets), beginning on February 9 at the [Walter Kerr Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/walter-kerr-theatre).

Known as the "Little Folksinger," DiFranco is known for being one of the first musical artists to create her own record label, Righteous Babe Records, in the 1990s. She has performed with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Brandi Carlile, and more, and her best-known albums include *Little Plastic Castle* and 2021's *Revolutionary Love*.

DiFranco's history with *Hadestown* began in 2010, when creator Anaïs Mitchell was first making *Hadestown* into a concept album. DiFranco originated the role of Persephone on the album and invited Mitchell to release it through Righteous Babe Records.

Now, DiFranco will play Persephone on stage, replacing fellow musician [Betty Who](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/betty-who), who departs the show on February 4. Upon premiering on Broadway in 2019, the show won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score for Mitchell, and Best Direction of a Musical for Rachel Chavkin.

The Grammy Award-winning musician, who originated the role of Persephone on the show's initial concept album, will now play the role at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

The company of the new Broadway musical [*How to Dance in Ohio*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32763-how-to-dance-in-ohio-tickets) has a saying: "If you've met one autistic individual, you've met one autistic individual." The show centers on the coming-of-age stories of seven autistic, young adults preparing for a formal dance, and no two of their experiences, journeys, or milestones are the same. So it goes, too, for the people playing them.

All seven actors starring in *Ohio* reprise their roles from the 2022 Syracuse world premiere of the musical, which in turn are based on real people from an award-winning documentary by Alexandra Shiva. The young actors are all making their Broadway debuts, and most importantly, they're all autistic. 

"We were able to bring our natural selves into these characters," actor Conor Tague said. "The fact that autistic people are playing autistic characters is growing — it started off with Kayla Cromer for *Everything's Gonna Be Okay*, and now we're next."

The principal cast also includes four neurotypical actors, three of whom are Broadway veterans, making *Ohio* truly diverse in every sense of the word — in neurotype, race, gender, age, and experience level. Said Tague, "This is the kind of representation we all need."

## Desmond Luis Edwards

Many actors say they bring themselves to their characters, but for Edwards, as the character Remy, it was partly the other way around.

__Who they play:__ Remy is an avid cosplayer and really into fashion and costumes and makeup. My character just started a cosplay channel, and he's trying to get a little bit of recognition, but this recognition comes in some unexpected ways, and now he has to learn how to cope with that.

__What they love about their character:__ I love to do digital art and fashion design, and I actually picked up cosplay because my character does cosplay. Both my character and I are very artistic as well as autistic!

__Fun fact:__ I am one of the first openly intersex people to be on Broadway.

## Amelia (Yi-Hsuan) Fei

When describing what playing her character, Caroline, taught her, Fei referenced Stephen Sondheim's *Into the Woods*: "Nice is different than good."

__Who she plays:__ Caroline is a freshman in college, and she just got her first boyfriend. She's very excited — her special interest is romance, loves *Bridgerton*, the Regency [Era]. She pictured her life in a certain way and then realizes, "I thought having a boyfriend is so wonderful, but I don't know how to set boundaries."

__What she loves about her character:__ [Caroline] is truly someone who'll heal [my] inner child. It's just such a delight to play her.

__Fun fact:__ I used to have "bark like a chihuahua" under my special skills [on my resume], and I'm very proud of that skill!

## Liam Pearce

Pearce makes his Broadway debut as Drew, an empath who just wants the best for his friends — which seems like the vibe between the cast off stage as well.

__Who he plays:__ Drew tackles situations or struggles that he has in a straightforward, step-by-step format. He cares a lot about his friends — he can tell you what is going on in every one of his friends' lives because he's so adamant [about] listening and observing.

__What he loves about his character:__ The way he develops feelings for Marideth throughout the show is very similar to the way I develop crushes on people. Watching the ways that he tries to speak to her and his struggle and accomplishments with that is fascinating.

__Fun fact:__ I am making my Broadway debut playing opposite a person who is a foot and a half shorter than me.

## Madison Kopec

Kopec's Marideth is the quietest of the bunch, but over the course of *Ohio*, she learns how to reach out to others — and finds unexpected friendship and love along the way.

__Who they play:__ Marideth keeps to herself most of the time unless she gets going on something she's interested in, like geography — then she could talk your ear off forever.

__What they love about their character:__ She and I are very similar in our journey to adulthood and figuring out, "Okay, I'm 18. Now what?" That story is going to be relatable for people.

__Fun fact:__ I am playing opposite someone who is a foot and a half taller than me.

## Imani Russell

Russell makes their Broadway debut as Mel, the only one of the seven main characters without a direct real-life counterpart. The character is a composite of multiple people — including Russell.

__Who they play:__ I play Mel. They love reptiles, they're a very spiritual person, they love quotes. They're the only character we see of the seven autistic principals that has a job and is living on their own. That is super important for me to portray as someone in a similar position.

__What they love about their character:__ I was able to have a lot of conversations with Rebekah [Greer Melocik], the writer, about autism and its relationship to queerness and how that has affected me. She was so willing to implement that into the character, which means a lot to me and will also mean a lot to [my] queer and trans/non-binary friends who are also autistic.

__Fun fact:__ I'm a classically trained singer, so I started out singing opera and arias. Now I'm doing musical theatre!

## Conor Tague

Tague moved to New York just a few weeks before *Ohio* rehearsals to play Tommy. "I lived in Florida and I had a lot of trouble back there," he said. "I'm really happy to be in New York and to be making my Broadway debut and to have a reason to come up here and live my authentic self."

__Who he plays:__ Tommy's goal is to become a licensed driver, and he wants to borrow his brother's truck for practice. His brother doesn't want him to do that, but that ain't gonna stop him.

__What he loves about his character:__ Tommy, like me, is a comic book nerd. He loves Marvel and DC and sci-fi/fantasy, like *Star Wars* and *Lord of the Rings*. But there is one major difference between me and Tommy: Tommy wants to be a licensed driver. But not me. I'm good with the subway.

__Fun fact:__ I also do puppetry. I was inspired by John Tartaglia, who's widely known for *Avenue Q*. I met John when I was 15, and he knows about our show!

## Ashley Wool

Rounding out the septet of autistic leads is Ashley Wool, making her Broadway debut as the strong-willed Jessica.

__Who she plays:__ Jessica is a young woman who is really determined and ambitious to check off all of the necessary boxes of adulthood. She's really dedicated to going to therapy, to make sure she's doing everything expected of her, and a large part of her character is learning that nothing happens on an exact timeline for everybody. She's watching her best friend have her first boyfriend, and she has some feelings about that.

__What she loves about her character:__ [She learns that] everyone's timeline is different. Everyone's story is different. Everybody's milestones are different.

__Fun fact:__ I still have a grody old piece of wood from my high school production of *Footloose* 20 years ago. It's in my New York City apartment, and I'm planning to put it in the dressing room.

## Caesar Samayoa

Samayoa comes to *How to Dance in Ohio* from another Broadway musical inspired by a true story, *Come From Away*, in which he performed for its entire five-year run.

__Who he plays:__ I play Dr. Emilio Amigo — he is the owner and one of the counselors at the counseling center. Inspired by the young men and women that go to the center, he comes up with the idea of of holding a spring formal. His heart bursts open and his life changes because of what he's learning.

__What he loves about his character:__ [The real Amigo and I have] been emailing back and forth, and we will be meeting in person very soon. What I'm getting from his energy and from how he runs his center is the belief that we are limitless and that we should always be striving for more, to break our boundaries.

__Fun fact:__ I tend to only do roles that are based on real things.

## Cristina Sastre

Sastre makes her Broadway debut as Ashley Amigo, a young girl who grew up in her father's counseling center and is now looking to forge her own path.

__Who she plays:__ Ashley Amigo is the daughter of Dr. Amigo, the head psychologist at the Amigo Family Counseling Center. She has just come back from school, where she's a dancer, and she's feeling conflicted about what she wants to do with her life.

__What he loves about his character:__ When I got the audition packet, I was like, this feels like me. I really connect to her not being sure if this thing she's poured so much time and energy into is the right thing. I relate to her doubt and her feeling of responsibility to her parents who have given up so much for her, but at the same time, the strength to listen to the voice inside of you.

__Fun fact:__ I love to paint and draw. When I was a very small child, before I decided to be an actor, I thought I would be an artist.

## Darlesia Cearcy

With five previous Broadway credits to her name, most recently *Once on This Island*, Cearcy returns to theatre in a motherly role on and off stage.

__Who she plays:__ Johanna is not necessarily a character — she's a real woman, and she is the mother to Caroline.

__What she loves about her character:__ I too, am a mother. I bring that to my character and to the seven [lead actors]. Sometimes they're like, "Okay, can you pull back?" But it's all with love. That protective, motherly spirit — I just can't help it!

__Fun fact:__ Before I moved into musical theatre, my former training is as a classical ballet dancer. Once I decided I wanted to move into leading-lady parts, I covered my body so they wouldn't see me standing in first position.

## Haven Burton

Broadway veteran Haven Burton says she always tries to bring herself to her roles, but she described her role as Terry in particular as "art imitating life imitating art."

__Who she plays:__ Terry is Jessica's mother and best friends with Johanna.

__What she loves about her character:__ I'm a mom, and I have history with my own mother that I'm bringing into that. I also have a son who is on the autism spectrum, so it's been beautiful to bring that in and learn a lot from my fellow cast members, and from Terry as as the character is written. Her relationship with her daughter has informed my personal life.

__Fun fact:__ I do lots of funny voices — I do lots of animated characters from *Pokémon*.

Spread the good word! The new musical *Tammy Faye* is set to premiere on Broadway in the 2024-25 season. Exact dates and a venue have yet to be set, though the show will go up at one of the nine Broadway theatres owned by the Nederlander Organization.

*Tammy Faye* tells the larger-than-life story of how the televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker and her husband, Jim Bakker, revolutionized religion, clashing with more traditional religious groups in the process. The show features music by Elton John, lyrics by Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters (*Kinky Boots*), and a book by James Graham (*Ink*).

Called "a heavenly pleasure" and "gloriously, ecstatically camp" in a four-star [London Theatre review](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/tammy-faye-review-almeida-theatre-elton-john), the show premiered at London's Almeida Theatre in 2022. The following year, *Tammy Faye* earned four Olivier Award nominations, including for Best New Musical.

Two-time Tony Award nominee Rupert Goold (*Ink*, *King Charles III*) directed the London premiere and will return for the Broadway production. *Tammy Faye* also features choreography by Lynne Page; orchestrations by Tom Deering and Mark Dickman; music supervision, arrangements and additional music by Tom Deering; scenic design by Bunny Christie, costume design by Katrina Lindsay; lighting design by Neil Austin; sound design by Bobby Aitken; and video design by Finn Ross. 

Casting for *Tammy Faye* on Broadway has yet to be announced. Katie Brayben and [Andrew Rannells](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-rannells) played the Bakkers in London.

The *Tammy Faye* musical is not associated with *The Eyes of Tammy Faye*, the 2021 film about the Bakkers for which [Jessica Chastain](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jessica-chastain) won an Oscar.
