He's got more to talk about! [*Small Talk*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26797-colin-quinn-small-talk-tickets), the latest solo comedy show from Colin Quinn, will extend off Broadway at a new venue. The show will end its run at the [Lucille Lortel Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lucille-lortel-theatre) as scheduled on February 11, then reopen at the [Greenwich House Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/greenwich-house-theater) from March 30 to May 6.

*Small Talk* is the newest of Quinn's many Broadway and Off-Broadway stand-up comedy shows. Past shows include *An Irish Wake* and *Long Story Short* on Broadway, and *Unconstitutional*, *Red State Blue State*, *The New York Story*, and *The Last Best Hope* off Broadway.

The New York-based comedian's latest stand-up show about the art of charisma is currently playing at the Lucille Lortel Theatre through February 11.

*The Wire* actor Andre Royo will star in a new production of Eric Bogosian’s [*Drinking in America*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27688-drinking-in-america). *Drinking in America* begins previews at the [Minetta Lane Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/minetta-lane-theatre) on March 10, ahead of an opening night on March 19, and performances to April 8. 

Royo will play over a dozen characters in *Drinking in America.* The play explores society’s expectations of what makes a man, with press material stating: “this critically acclaimed work takes on a new persona in our present day, with terms like toxic masculinity and male fragility at the forefront of the zeitgeist.”

Eric Bogosian’s *Drinking in America* is part of Audible Theater’s fifth season of shows at the Minetta Lane Theatre, including *Lucy*. 

Royo is best known for playing Reginald “Bubbles” Cousins in *The Wire.* He’s also starred in *Truth Be Told* for Apple TV+, and *With Love* for Amazon.

Mark Armstrong directs, with set design by Kristen Robinson, costume design by Sarita Fellows, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, and sound design by John Gromada.

The four-week engagement begins in March. 


Those willing to venture out to Brooklyn will find one of the starriest must-see shows beyond Broadway. For six weeks only, through March 19, the Brooklyn Academy of Music hosts Lorraine Hansberry's [*The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26553-the-sign-in-sidney-brusteins-window-tickets) at its [Harvey Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/harvey-theater-at-bam-strong).

This celebrated work, a lesser-known masterpiece by the *A Raisin in the Sun* playwright, receives its first New York revival in 50 years with two A-listers on the marquee. Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan play Sidney and Iris Brustein, a couple whose unachievable political ideals upset their marriage in 1960s Greenwich Village.

Neither is a newcomer to the stage, though both are making long-awaited returns to New York. Learn more about Isaac and Brosnahan's performance history, and don't miss your window of opportunity to see them live.

## Brosnahan and Isaac are sharing the stage for the first time.

Neither have appeared in a TV show or movie together, either, so *The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window* marks audiences' first chance to see the pair perform together. Brosnahan and Isaac were, however, both nominated at the 74th Emmy Awards in 2022 — Brosnahan for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (*The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*) and Isaac for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (*Scenes From a Marriage*).

## Both Isaac and Brosnahan have a Shakespearean background.

Isaac's last Off-Broadway credit was in the title role of *Hamlet* at The Public Theater. A year earlier, Brosnahan appeared as Desdemona in a futuristic adaptation of *Othello*, produced by [New York Theatre Workshop](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/new-york-theatre-workshop).

## The actors are making their long-awaited returns to the New York stage.

*Hamlet* and *Othello* went up in 2017 and 2016, respectively, and neither actor has appeared on or off Broadway since then. However, they've kept busy with plenty of other projects that audiences will surely recognize. ## Oscar Isaac

Isaac earned global movie star status for his role as Poe Dameron in the latest *Star Wars* trilogy, building upon that prominence with roles in other movies like *Dune* and TV shows like *Scenes From a Marriage* and Marvel's *Moon Knight*. But even before *Star Wars* made him a household name, Isaac had won a Golden Globe Award for his performance on the TV series *Show Me a Hero*.

Isaac also has an extensive background as a theatre actor. He hasn't performed on Broadway — yet — but he has been on the Off-Broadway scene since 2005, when he made his debut as Proteus in *Two Gentlemen of Verona*, with Shakespeare in the Park. His other New York stage roles include playwright Federico Garcia Lorca in *Beauty of the Father* and the title role of *Romeo and Juliet*, along with star parts in the plays *We Live Here* and *Grace*.

Even earlier, Isaac played a young Fidel Castro in a small NYC production of *When It's Cocktail Time in Cuba*, and he performed in various stage plays with the Florida-based GableStage and Area Stage Company when he was just starting out.

## Rachel Brosnahan

Brosnahan only has two previous New York stage credits: *Othello* Off Broadway and a 2013 production of *The Big Knife* on Broadway. She also performed in the play *Up* with Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 2009.

But Brosnahan has certainly proven she knows how to work a live audience as the title stand-up comedian on *The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel*. The Amazon Prime show earned the actress an Emmy Award, two Golden Globes, and four additional nominations between the two. Her other famous screen credits include the TV show *House of Cards* (which first made her an Emmy nominee) and the films *The Courier* and *I'm Your Woman*.

The complete cast includes Sasha Diamond as Illy, Gibson Frazier as Cam the Snowman, Kristine Nielsen as Elinore, Sky Smith as Neel, Pearl Sun as Srey, and Shannon Tyo as Mora.

The creative team, led by director Jenny Koons, includes scenic designer You-Shin Chen, costume designer Alicia J. Austin, lighting designer Stacey Derosier, and sound designer Megumi Katayama.

*Regretfully, So the Birds Are* follows three adopted Asian American siblings — Mora, Neel, and Illy Whistler — on their quests for self-discovery and identity. One is looking for her birth mother, one is looking for himself, and one is looking to hang on to a piece of the sky. Their journeys take them from Nebraska to China and beyond.

Atlantic Theater Company will present the world premiere of the new musical [*Days of Wine and Roses*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27504-days-of-wine-and-roses-tickets), starring Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James and Tony winner [Kelli O'Hara](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/kelli-ohara). Performances run from May 5 to June 25 at the [Linda Gross Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/linda-gross-theater) off Broadway.

O'Hara is known for her award-winning leading role in *The King and I*, revived off Broadway in 2015. She has received an additional six nominations throughout her celebrated career, for shows including *The Light in the Piazza*, *South Pacific*, *The Bridges of Madison County*, and *Kiss Me, Kate*.

James just wrapped a run in the celebrated Broadway revival of *Into the Woods* as the Baker. He is also known for his Tony-nominated performances in *Something Rotten!*, *Shrek*, and *Sweet Smell of Success*, along with screen appearances in films like *West Side Story* and TV shows like *Smash*.

*Days of Wine and Roses* is based on the 1958 teleplay and 1962 film of the same name. O'Hara and James star as Kirsten and Joe, a couple who fall in love in 1950s New York and struggle to rebuild their family.

The musical adaptation features a book by Craig Lucas and music and lyrics by Adam Guettel, who last collaborated on *The Light in the Piazza*. Michael Greif directs.

*Days of Wine and Roses* also features scenic design by Lizzie Clachan, costume design by Dede Ayite, lighting design by Ben Stanton, sound design by Kai Harada, orchestrations by Guettel, music contracting by Antoine Silverman, and music direction by Kim Grigsby.

The new musical will premiere later this spring.

Emmy and Tony Award nominee Jessica Hecht is set to star in the world-premiere play [*Letters From Max*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25996-letters-from-max-tickets), the latest play in Signature Theatre's season. Off-Broadway performances run at the [Pershing Square Signature Center](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/pershing-square-signature-center) from February 7 to March 19, with opening night on February 27.

Hecht will star as the show's playwright, Sarah Ruhl, in *Letters From Max*. She is best known for her Emmy-nominated performance on Netflix's *Special* alongside roles in *Breaking Bad* and *Friends*, in addition to stage credits including *A View From the Bridge* on Broadway. Later this season, she will star opposite Laura Linney in [*Summer, 1976*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25993-summer-1976-tickets) on Broadway.

Additionally, Ben Edelman and Zane Pais will alternate in the role of Max Ritvo in *Letters From Max*.

Led by director Kate Whoriskey, the play's creative team includes scenic designer Marsha Ginsberg, costume designer Anita Yavich, lighting designer Amith Chandrashaker, sound designer Sinan Refik Zafar, projection designer S Katy Tucker, and choreographer Warren Adams.

*Letters From Max* is based on Ruhl's same-named book, which chronicles the letters and poems she exchanged with her former student, the late poet Max Ritvo. The play shows how they became friends and learned and grew from each other, using poetry to express difficult truths.

She's going somewhere that's green! *Euphoria* star Maude Apatow is set to join [*Little Shop of Horrors*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24608-little-shop-of-horrors-tickets) off Broadway on February 7. She replaces Tony Award winner Lena Hall, who departs the production on February 5, as Audrey.

*Little Shop of Horrors* marks Apatow's stage debut. Apatow is best known for playing Lexi Howard on the HBO Max series *Euphoria*. Her other screen credits include the Netflix miniseries *Hollywood*, the HBO series *Girls*, and films including *The King of Staten Island*, *Assassination Nation*, *Knocked Up*, and *This is 40*.

In other casting news, Bryce Pinkham will return to the role of Orin Scrivello, D.D.S on January 24, and D’Kaylah Unique Whitley joins as Ronette from January 20.

The comedy horror musical follows Seymour, a flower shop worker who makes a deal with a flesh-eating plant in exchange for fame and the love of his coworker, Audrey. This critically acclaimed revival has played the [Westside Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/westside-theatre) since 2019.

The current *Little Shop of Horrors* cast also includes Matt Doyle as Seymour, Andrew Call as Orin Scrivello, D.D.S., Brad Oscar as Mushnik, Aaron Arnell Harrington as The Voice of Audrey II, Joy Woods as Ronnette, Khadija Sankoh as Chiffon, and Tiffany Renee Thompson as Crystal.

The show runs from February 22 to April 2, with opening night on March 13.

The complete cast includes Amaya Braganza, Sebastian Delascasas, Jayson Lee, Ariana Mahallati, Teagan Meredith, Gabriela Ortega, Sarah Marie Rodriguez, and Talia Ryder.

The new play will go up at New York Theatre Workshop.

To be or not to be at the Delacorte? The Public Theater's annual Free Shakespeare in the Park program will return this summer, with performances at the [Delacorte Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/delacorte-theater) in Central Park. Kicking off the season will be a production of *Hamlet*, which runs from June 8 to August 6 and officially opens on June 28.

Tony Award winner Kenny Leon directs the production, setting the story of Hamlet, a young prince tasked with avenging his father's murder by his uncle, in 2021. Leon previously directed *Much Ado About Nothing* at Shakespeare in the Park to acclaim in 2019, and he had two productions on Broadway in 2022: *Topdog/Underdog* and *Ohio State Murders*.

Tony nominee Ato Blankson-Wood will star in the title role. Last year, he starred as Orlando in the Shakespeare in the Park production of Shaina Taub's *As You Like It* musical.

Additional casting for *Hamlet* has yet to be announced.

Starring alongside the previously announced Oscar Isaac as Sidney Brustein and Rachel Brosnahan as Iris Brustein are Gus Birney as Gloria Parodus, Julian De Niro as Alton Scales, Glenn Fitzgerald as David Ragin, Andy Grotelueschen as Wally O’Hara, Miriam Silverman as Mavis Parodus Bryson, and Raphael Nash Thompson Max. Joey Auzenne, Gregory Connors, Brontë England-Nelson, and Amelia Pedlow are understudies.

The complete creative team, led by director Anne Kauffman, includes dramaturg Arminda Thomas, set designer dots, costume designer Brenda Abbandandolo, lighting designer John Torres, sound designer Bray Poor, wig designer Leah Loukas, props designer Andrew Diaz, and vocal coach Kate Wilson.

Victoria Pedretti has joined the Broadway cast of [*An Enemy of the People*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/29430-an-enemy-of-the-people-tickets) at the [Circle in the Square Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/circle-in-the-square-theatre), playing a limited 16-week engagement beginning February 27.

Now, she makes her Broadway debut as Petra Stockmann in the latest revival of Henrik Ibsen's classic play, newly adapted by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award nominee Amy Herzog.

Directed by Tony winner Sam Gold, *An Enemy of the People* centers on Thomas Stockmann, a doctor who calls out contaminated water in his town's spa baths. But instead of being hailed for saving lives, he becomes the target of hate for upending the town's economy and reputation.

The television actress known for her roles in *You* and *The Haunting of Hill House* will make her Broadway debut opposite Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli.

There's nothing you can't do, now you're on Broadway! Alicia Keys's musical [*Hell's Kitchen*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/37579-hells-kitchen-broadway) will transfer to Broadway in spring 2024, beginning performances at the [Shubert Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/shubert-theatre) on March 28 ahead of an April 20 opening night.

*Hell's Kitchen* is loosely based on Keys's upbringing in the title Manhattan neighborhood. The main character, a teenage Ali, comes of age and discovers hard truths about love, race, and defiance alongside her mother — but she also finds her passion for music and unlocks her future.

The musical features [Keys's hit pop songs](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/hear-the-music-of-alicia-keys-in-the-hells-kitchen-musical), including "Fallin'," "No One," and "Empire State of Mind," alongside previously unheard songs from the musician. *Hell's Kitchen* marks [Keys's first return to Broadway](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/all-the-times-alicia-keys-did-theatre) since she composed the music for the play *Stick Fly* in 2011.

The top Black Friday and Cyber Monday ticket deals in New York

Theatre ticketing platform TodayTix is hosting its annual ticket sale, and we rounded up the best deals on Broadway shows, attractions, experiences, and more.

Harold Prince, affectionately known within the industry as "Hal," went down in history as the driving force — either as director, producer, or both — behind some of the 20th century's most beloved musicals. *West Side Story*. *Fiddler on the Roof*. [*Cabaret*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32847-cabaret-tickets). [*Sweeney Todd*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/26216-sweeney-todd-on-broadway-tickets). *The Phantom of the Opera*. The list goes on for miles.

But before any of those were storied classics, they were unknown, original musicals breaking into a busy Broadway scene. New works were Prince's bread-and-butter throughout his career, right up until his death in 2019. Truly, *right* up: Mere days before his passing, he was reportedly giving notes on his final project, the musical [*How to Dance in Ohio*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32763-how-to-dance-in-ohio-tickets), which debuted on Broadway on November 15.

Based on Alexandra Shiva's 2015 documentary of the same name, *How to Dance in Ohio* dramatizes the stories of autistic young adults preparing for a spring formal dance, part of a social skills program at their group counseling center. Shiva was inspired to make the documentary to not only [celebrate autistic people](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/how-to-dance-in-ohio-pioneers-a-more-accessible-broadway) and their coming of age, but also shed light on the challenges they face as they begin to age out of institutional support. 

One such autistic person who inspired this project? Lucy Chaplin, Prince's now-25-year-old granddaughter.

She is not a character in the show or a subject in the documentary, but the film is dedicated to her. Prince, similarly, wanted to produce a Broadway show about autism in her honor. And it just so happened that, through a seemingly destined chain of events, *Ohio* came full-circle to land on his desk.

It was 2017 when Shiva approved writers Jacob Yandura and Rebekah Greer Melocik to musicalize *Ohio*. "Around the same time, we met Ben Holtzman and Sammy Lopez, who are two [of *Ohio*'s] early producers," Yandura recalled. "They were looking for a show to just start from the ground up."

"Ben was working in the Hal Prince office, and Hal said he wanted to do a show about autism. And Ben was like, 'Well, I think we have the right people for you.'"

Prince almost immediately signed on to direct, and he, Yandura, and Melocik worked closely on *How to Dance in Ohio* for the next two years. Prince staged early workshops. He took detailed notes in the margins of three copies of the script. He, the writers, and the producers recorded every meeting they had about the show.

"He gave us all of his wisdom right from the beginning," Yandura said. And suddenly, on July 31, 2019, that written and recorded wisdom, and the team's memories of their collaboration, were all that was left.

Director Sammi Cannold eventually took over the reins from Prince thanks to Yandura, who invited her for a coffee meeting via Instagram that led to an interview for the job. Like Prince, she has an autistic relative (her brother) and was already familiar with the documentary.

"I was very daunted and humbled by the potential task of picking up where this legend left off," Cannold remembered. "Those [recordings and notes] have been my north star as I've been working through the show and trying to honor the vision of what he intended this piece to be, while, of course, never actually being him."

"To make my Broadway debut while trying to uphold that that vision has been the greatest honor," she continued. Yandura, Melocik, and a majority of the [principal cast](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/meet-the-cast-of-how-to-dance-in-ohio-on-broadway) make their Broadway debuts alongside her, too, after they finally premiered the completed show in Syracuse in 2022.

Considering Prince's passion for new work and talent, *How to Dance in Ohio* seems like it turned out just as he'd have wanted.

The opera starts off like many classic fairytales, with a prince sent by a queen to rescue a princess in distress. He's helped along in his quest by the titular charmed instrument, which turns sadness into joy when he plays it. Once he rescues the princess, however, the two realize her captor is actually kind and wise, and it's the queen that needs to be defeated.

Top theatre to see in New York in December | New York Theatre Guide

[Danny DeVito](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/danny-devito)'s return to Broadway, in the new comedy play [*I Need That*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28198-i-need-that-on-broadway), is an event unto itself. "It's exciting as can be," he said, a statement his many fans would likely echo.

But there's only one thing more exciting than a DeVito on stage, and that's two DeVitos on stage.

The Emmy-winning, Tony-nominated star of *Taxi* and *It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia* now performs opposite Lucy DeVito, his daughter with a sizable stage and screen resume of her own. Fittingly, they play father and daughter through December 30 in *I Need That* — albeit a father, Sam, with a hoarding problem that requires his daughter Amelia's intervention lest he face eviction.

Working together for weeks on end might cause similar tension in some families, especially ones who've never shared the stage. Danny DeVito has only been on Broadway once before, in 2017's *The Price*, and Lucy DeVito is making her debut. But their offstage relationship is stronger than ever.

"To hang out with her every day for months doing the rehearsals, and now doing the play every night, I just can't wait to go to work," Danny DeVito said.

"Working with my dad has brought me and him closer," Lucy DeVito echoed. "We're buddies! He's my best friend! We're having so much fun."

She went on to describe her dad as "the funniest dude ever," but when asked what he admires about his daughter, the elder DeVito got more thoughtful. "I always admire her because she has a great work ethic," he said. "She's very funny and she's genuine and loving, but she also takes it very seriously."

Their bond is apparent to everyone else involved in *I Need That*, too, including Ray Anthony Thomas, who stars opposite the DeVitos as a longtime friend of Sam's; playwright Theresa Rebeck; and director Moritz von Stuelpnagel (he and Rebeck are another dynamic duo, having collaborated five times before).

"If somebody discovers something in their performance, the other one will often break character because they're so proud to see what they've come up with," von Stuelpnagel said. "I have to remind them, 'Stay in character!'"

He may joke about the DeVitos derailing his rehearsals, but he sincerely added, "That joy and admiration and respect has been infectious to the whole room."

Lance Foster and Suzy Jane Hunt, who understudy Thomas and Lucy DeVito, respectively, attested to that, too. "It's rare to see family members work together, let alone family members from different generations," Foster noted. "I've never seen a mother and a daughter or a father and a daughter [perform together on Broadway]."

"It makes me miss my dad, honestly, to watch them interact, and the way you can't quite tell if they're acting, running a scene, or chatting in the corners," Hunt added.

But as much as the DeVitos's stage collaboration is a monumental occasion, hearing them talk about how they "goof off all the time" (Lucy's words) and share cannolis backstage (one of their many weekly rituals, also including a taco Tuesday), you'd think they were simply spending ordinary quality time like any other father and daughter.

Said Lucy DeVito: "We are able to talk about the work, and then we're able to leave that aside, and then my family's going to come, and we're all going to have Thanksgiving."

I Need That on Broadway

Danny DeVito and his daughter, Lucy DeVito, join forces in Theresa Rebeck's play, which marks the younger DeVito's Broadway debut and the elder's return.

She's livin' it up on top! Grammy Award winner Ani DiFranco will make her Broadway debut in [*Hadestown*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets), beginning on February 9 at the [Walter Kerr Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/walter-kerr-theatre).

Known as the "Little Folksinger," DiFranco is known for being one of the first musical artists to create her own record label, Righteous Babe Records, in the 1990s. She has performed with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Brandi Carlile, and more, and her best-known albums include *Little Plastic Castle* and 2021's *Revolutionary Love*.

DiFranco's history with *Hadestown* began in 2010, when creator Anaïs Mitchell was first making *Hadestown* into a concept album. DiFranco originated the role of Persephone on the album and invited Mitchell to release it through Righteous Babe Records.

Now, DiFranco will play Persephone on stage, replacing fellow musician [Betty Who](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/betty-who), who departs the show on February 4. The *Hadestown* Broadway cast also includes [Jordan Fisher](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/jordan-fisher) as Orpheus, Lillias White as Hermes, Phillip Boykin as Hades, Solea Pfeiffer as Eurydice, and Lindsey Hailes, Belén Moyano, and Brit West as the Fates.

*Hadestown* reimagines the Greek myths of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades, Persephone, and more as a tragic love story with a folk and jazz sound. Upon premiering on Broadway in 2019, the show won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score for Mitchell, and Best Direction of a Musical for Rachel Chavkin.

The Grammy Award-winning musician, who originated the role of Persephone on the show's initial concept album, will now play the role at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

The company of the new Broadway musical [*How to Dance in Ohio*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/32763-how-to-dance-in-ohio-tickets) has a saying: "If you've met one autistic individual, you've met one autistic individual." The show centers on the coming-of-age stories of seven autistic, young adults preparing for a formal dance, and no two of their experiences, journeys, or milestones are the same. So it goes, too, for the people playing them.

All seven actors starring in *Ohio* reprise their roles from the 2022 Syracuse world premiere of the musical, which in turn are based on real people from an award-winning documentary by Alexandra Shiva. The young actors are all making their Broadway debuts, and most importantly, they're all autistic. 

"We were able to bring our natural selves into these characters," actor Conor Tague said. "The fact that autistic people are playing autistic characters is growing — it started off with Kayla Cromer for *Everything's Gonna Be Okay*, and now we're next."

The principal cast also includes four neurotypical actors, three of whom are Broadway veterans, making *Ohio* truly diverse in every sense of the word — in neurotype, race, gender, age, and experience level. Said Tague, "This is the kind of representation we all need."

## Desmond Luis Edwards

Many actors say they bring themselves to their characters, but for Edwards, as the character Remy, it was partly the other way around.

__Who they play:__ Remy is an avid cosplayer and really into fashion and costumes and makeup. My character just started a cosplay channel, and he's trying to get a little bit of recognition, but this recognition comes in some unexpected ways, and now he has to learn how to cope with that.

__What they love about their character:__ I love to do digital art and fashion design, and I actually picked up cosplay because my character does cosplay. Both my character and I are very artistic as well as autistic!

__Fun fact:__ I am one of the first openly intersex people to be on Broadway.

## Amelia (Yi-Hsuan) Fei

When describing what playing her character, Caroline, taught her, Fei referenced Stephen Sondheim's *Into the Woods*: "Nice is different than good."

__Who she plays:__ Caroline is a freshman in college, and she just got her first boyfriend. She's very excited — her special interest is romance, loves *Bridgerton*, the Regency [Era]. She pictured her life in a certain way and then realizes, "I thought having a boyfriend is so wonderful, but I don't know how to set boundaries."

__What she loves about her character:__ [Caroline] is truly someone who'll heal [my] inner child. It's just such a delight to play her.

__Fun fact:__ I used to have "bark like a chihuahua" under my special skills [on my resume], and I'm very proud of that skill!

## Liam Pearce

Pearce makes his Broadway debut as Drew, an empath who just wants the best for his friends — which seems like the vibe between the cast off stage as well.

__Who he plays:__ Drew tackles situations or struggles that he has in a straightforward, step-by-step format. He cares a lot about his friends — he can tell you what is going on in every one of his friends' lives because he's so adamant [about] listening and observing.

__What he loves about his character:__ The way he develops feelings for Marideth throughout the show is very similar to the way I develop crushes on people. Watching the ways that he tries to speak to her and his struggle and accomplishments with that is fascinating.

__Fun fact:__ I am making my Broadway debut playing opposite a person who is a foot and a half shorter than me.

## Madison Kopec

Kopec's Marideth is the quietest of the bunch, but over the course of *Ohio*, she learns how to reach out to others — and finds unexpected friendship and love along the way.

__Who they play:__ Marideth keeps to herself most of the time unless she gets going on something she's interested in, like geography — then she could talk your ear off forever.

__What they love about their character:__ She and I are very similar in our journey to adulthood and figuring out, "Okay, I'm 18. Now what?" That story is going to be relatable for people.

__Fun fact:__ I am playing opposite someone who is a foot and a half taller than me.

## Imani Russell

Russell makes their Broadway debut as Mel, the only one of the seven main characters without a direct real-life counterpart. The character is a composite of multiple people — including Russell.

__Who they play:__ I play Mel. They love reptiles, they're a very spiritual person, they love quotes. They're the only character we see of the seven autistic principals that has a job and is living on their own. That is super important for me to portray as someone in a similar position.

__What they love about their character:__ I was able to have a lot of conversations with Rebekah [Greer Melocik], the writer, about autism and its relationship to queerness and how that has affected me. She was so willing to implement that into the character, which means a lot to me and will also mean a lot to [my] queer and trans/non-binary friends who are also autistic.

__Fun fact:__ I'm a classically trained singer, so I started out singing opera and arias. Now I'm doing musical theatre!

## Conor Tague

Tague moved to New York just a few weeks before *Ohio* rehearsals to play Tommy. "I lived in Florida and I had a lot of trouble back there," he said. "I'm really happy to be in New York and to be making my Broadway debut and to have a reason to come up here and live my authentic self."

__Who he plays:__ Tommy's goal is to become a licensed driver, and he wants to borrow his brother's truck for practice. His brother doesn't want him to do that, but that ain't gonna stop him.

__What he loves about his character:__ Tommy, like me, is a comic book nerd. He loves Marvel and DC and sci-fi/fantasy, like *Star Wars* and *Lord of the Rings*. But there is one major difference between me and Tommy: Tommy wants to be a licensed driver. But not me. I'm good with the subway.

__Fun fact:__ I also do puppetry. I was inspired by John Tartaglia, who's widely known for *Avenue Q*. I met John when I was 15, and he knows about our show!

## Ashley Wool

Rounding out the septet of autistic leads is Ashley Wool, making her Broadway debut as the strong-willed Jessica.

__Who she plays:__ Jessica is a young woman who is really determined and ambitious to check off all of the necessary boxes of adulthood. She's really dedicated to going to therapy, to make sure she's doing everything expected of her, and a large part of her character is learning that nothing happens on an exact timeline for everybody. She's watching her best friend have her first boyfriend, and she has some feelings about that.

__What she loves about her character:__ [She learns that] everyone's timeline is different. Everyone's story is different. Everybody's milestones are different.

__Fun fact:__ I still have a grody old piece of wood from my high school production of *Footloose* 20 years ago. It's in my New York City apartment, and I'm planning to put it in the dressing room.

## Caesar Samayoa

Samayoa comes to *How to Dance in Ohio* from another Broadway musical inspired by a true story, *Come From Away*, in which he performed for its entire five-year run.

__Who he plays:__ I play Dr. Emilio Amigo — he is the owner and one of the counselors at the counseling center. Inspired by the young men and women that go to the center, he comes up with the idea of of holding a spring formal. His heart bursts open and his life changes because of what he's learning.

__What he loves about his character:__ [The real Amigo and I have] been emailing back and forth, and we will be meeting in person very soon. What I'm getting from his energy and from how he runs his center is the belief that we are limitless and that we should always be striving for more, to break our boundaries.

__Fun fact:__ I tend to only do roles that are based on real things.

## Cristina Sastre

Sastre makes her Broadway debut as Ashley Amigo, a young girl who grew up in her father's counseling center and is now looking to forge her own path.

__Who she plays:__ Ashley Amigo is the daughter of Dr. Amigo, the head psychologist at the Amigo Family Counseling Center. She has just come back from school, where she's a dancer, and she's feeling conflicted about what she wants to do with her life.

__What he loves about his character:__ When I got the audition packet, I was like, this feels like me. I really connect to her not being sure if this thing she's poured so much time and energy into is the right thing. I relate to her doubt and her feeling of responsibility to her parents who have given up so much for her, but at the same time, the strength to listen to the voice inside of you.

__Fun fact:__ I love to paint and draw. When I was a very small child, before I decided to be an actor, I thought I would be an artist.

## Darlesia Cearcy

With five previous Broadway credits to her name, most recently *Once on This Island*, Cearcy returns to theatre in a motherly role on and off stage.

__Who she plays:__ Johanna is not necessarily a character — she's a real woman, and she is the mother to Caroline.

__What she loves about her character:__ I too, am a mother. I bring that to my character and to the seven [lead actors]. Sometimes they're like, "Okay, can you pull back?" But it's all with love. That protective, motherly spirit — I just can't help it!

__Fun fact:__ Before I moved into musical theatre, my former training is as a classical ballet dancer. Once I decided I wanted to move into leading-lady parts, I covered my body so they wouldn't see me standing in first position.

## Haven Burton

Broadway veteran Haven Burton says she always tries to bring herself to her roles, but she described her role as Terry in particular as "art imitating life imitating art."

__Who she plays:__ Terry is Jessica's mother and best friends with Johanna.

__What she loves about her character:__ I'm a mom, and I have history with my own mother that I'm bringing into that. I also have a son who is on the autism spectrum, so it's been beautiful to bring that in and learn a lot from my fellow cast members, and from Terry as as the character is written. Her relationship with her daughter has informed my personal life.

__Fun fact:__ I do lots of funny voices — I do lots of animated characters from *Pokémon*.
