Vineyard Theatre has announced the second production in its 2026-2027 Off-Broadway season: Half Straddle's Petra, from Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s play The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, conceived and directed by Tina Satter (Is This A Room). It will begin performances in February 2027 at dates to be announced at Vineyard's Union Square venue.
Based on the 1971 play and 1972 film by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, successful fashion designer Petra and her faithful assistant Marlene's lives change when introduced to Karin, an enchanting young model. When Petra falls in love, her obsession turns toxic, leading to a psychological breaking point and a shifted relationship dynamic.
Tina Satter's contemporary staging will update this cult-classic work, bringing this darkly comedic and seductive production to a new audience. Additional creative team members and cast have yet to be announced.
“We are thrilled to welcome Tina Satter and Half Straddle back to Vineyard Theatre after our collaboration on Is This A Room," said Artistic Director Sarah Stern in a statement. "Tina is a singular and visionary theatre maker whose work is full of heart, precision, and imagination. She has now turned her lens to Fassbinder’s play The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, a psychological chamber drama which became a classic of art house and queer cinema. Tina reimagines this quietly epic story of desire, loneliness, and the power struggles embedded in intimate relationships in ways that are absolutely riveting. I truly can't wait for Vineyard audiences to experience this moving and illuminating new production."
This production joins the previously announced Ms. Blakk for President starring Emmy Award winner Wayne Brady in the title role, beginning in October 2026.
