As the announcement was made that new musical comedy Moonshine: That Hee Haw Musical, based on the TV variety show Hee Haw, will stage its world premiere at the Dallas Theater Center in Texas this Fall, the question arises on whether it will have a future on Broadway afterwards. Dallas performances begin on 2 September 2015 for a limited run through to 11 October 2015.

The musical Hee-Haw, which features a book by Robert Horn, with music and lyrics by country singer-songwriters Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark, will not follow a variety show format, but will instead tell the story of "a wily sexpot from Kornfield Kounty and her boyfriend. They're destined to be married, but she decides she wants to see the world first."

Synopsis: "Moonshine: That Hee Haw Musical distills the spirit of an iconic television series and bottles it into an original musical comedy. Set in present day Kornfield Kounty, this highly anticipated show introduces a new generation of irresistible characters as it tells the story of Misty Mae, the ultimate hometown girl, who heads out to follow her dreams in the big city of... Tampa. When she returns home to introduce her slick city-boy beau to her friends and family, everything goes haywire!"

It is directed by Gary Griffin and choreographed by Denis Jones, with scenic design by John Lee Beatty, costumes by Mara Blumenfeld, and musical supervision, arrangements and orchestrations by Tony and Grammy Award-winner Stephen Oremus. Producers include Opry Entertainment (Steve Buchanan, Sally Williams) and Fox Theatricals (Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson), in conjunction with Dallas Theater Center, with Nina Lannan as Executive Producer.

Hee Haw was a popular varity show featuring country music and comedy sketches set in the fictional rural Kornfield Kounty. The show was co-hosted by country artists Buck Owens and Roy Clark and featured cornball characters such as 'Grandpa Jones,' 'Misty Rowe,' 'Lulu Roman,' 'Junior Samples' and 'Barbi Benton,' many of which will appear in the musical.
