Menken, Zippel & Fierstein adapting Mrs Doubtfire
According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Oscar and Tony Award-winning composer Alan Menken has confirmed that he is indeed in the early stages of adapting the 1993 Robin Williams film Mrs. Doubtfire into a musical for the Broadway stage. He is collaborating with Tony Award-winning lyricist David Zippel and Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein, who is writing the book for the musical. Fierstein played the role of Frank Hillard in the movie.
Mr Menken revealed:
"It's going very well. It's in its early stages. We're really enjoying working on it."
Alan Menken previously teamed up with David Zippel on the hit 1997 Disney animated classic 'Hercules,' which also earned the pair Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Song for 'Go the Distance.' Menken also previously teamed up with Harvey Fierstein on Disney's Tony Award-winning musical 'Newsies.'
Synopsis: "Mrs. Doubtfire follows Daniel Hillard, an actor who, following his divorce from his wife Miranda, disguises himself as the titular, British female housekeeper in order to spend more time with his children, who are now in custody of his ex-wife."
Alan Menken's Broadway credits include his 2012 Tony Award-winning score for Disney's 'Newsies,' his 2014 Tony-nominated score for Disney's 'Aladdin,' 2011 Tony-nominated score for 'Sister Act,' his 2008 Tony-nominated score for Disney's 'The Little Mermaid,' 'Leap of Faith,' 'Little Shop of Horrors,' 'King David,' and Disney's 'Beauty and the Beast.'
David Zippel won a 1990 Tony Award for 'City of Angels' and was nominated in 2006 for 'The Woman in White'. Other Broadway credits include 'The Goodbye Girl,' 'Liza's at the Palace...' and 'Barbara Cook: A Concert for the Theatre.'
Harvey Fierstein won Tony Awards, both as an actor and playwright, for 'Hairspray,' 'La Cage aux Folles,' and 'Torch Song Trilogy.' He earned further nominations for 'Casa Valentina,' 'Kinky Boots,' and Disney's 'Newsies.' Other Broadway credits include 'A Catered Affair,' 'Fiddler on the Roof,' 'Legs Diamond,' and 'Safe Sex.'
