Liza at the Palace! extends its run for a second time
Liza Minnelli's new cabaret show on Broadway, Liza's At The Palace...!, extends its run for a second time, this time by one week.
The show, which opened at the Palace Theatre on 3 Dec 2008, will now play through to 4 Jan 2009. The show's limited engagement was originally scheduled to end on 14 Dec 2008, and then was extended trough to 28 Dec 2008.
The show opened to good to luke-warm reviews: Her voice was in tatters, her diction unsteady... Many of her highest notes were dry, piercing caws. ...Once the show began to soar, though, Ms. Minnellis force of will became a triumph of spirit over flesh." (NY Times) "100% fantastic entertainment" (NY Daily News); "A knockout show that combines many of her best-known hits." (NY Post); "An amiable balance of pizzazz and sentiment." (Back Stage); "It would be foolish if you don't catch her act." (AP).
As previously reported, the 10 Dec 2008 performance Liza's At The Palace...! was cancelled, on doctor's orders, due to the star suffering health problems caused by exhaustion.
Producer John Scher said, "This past opening week has been a marathon run for Lizawhich unfortunately has led her to dehydration and her doctor has insisted she get some extra rest. Liza will return for the show's next scheduled performance on Friday, Dec 12th (8PM)."
Ticket holders for the 10 Dec performance can exchange for any other scheduled performance or seek a refund.
Produced by John Scher/Metropolitan Talent Presents & Jubilee Time Productions and directed and choreographed by Ron Lewis, the show features a Minnelli songfest including many of her personal favorites and signature hits, followed by a dance-filled tribute to the groundbreaking late-1940s nightclub act of Minnelli's godmother, Kay Thompson.
Along with a twelve-man orchestra led by conductor/drummer Michael Berkowitz and pianist/musical supervisor Billy Stritch, Liza's At The Palace...! highlights with many of Minnellis showstoppers such as Cabaret, Maybe This Time, and New York New York all written especially for her by the Broadway song writing partnership of John Kander and Fred Ebb.
For the first time onstage, Minnelli pays an affectionate salute to her godmother, the late Kay Thompson who was a legendary performer (Think Pink! from Funny Face), author (Eloise at the Plaza) as well a gifted vocal arranger and Music Director/vocal coach at MGM Studios who worked with stars such as Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Lena Horne.
Supported by a quartet of singer/dancers, Minnelli performs musical hits (with the original vocal arrangements) from Thompson's act including such numbers as I Love a Violin, Clap Yo' Hands, Jubilee Time and Hello Hello---set to brand-new staging and choreography by Mr. Lewis. Accompanying her onstage will be Corts Alexander, Jim Caruso, Tiger Martina and Johnny Rodgers.
The concert performance is scripted by Minnelli and Tony Award-winner David Zippel (City of Angels), and is full of personal stories, anecdotes and reminiscences embraced in a theatrical setting featuring scenery by Ray Klausen, costumes by Halston, lighting by Matthew Berman and sound by Matt Krauss.
Minnelli was born in Los Angeles and made her screen debut as a toddler in the musical 'In the Good Old Summertime' in 1949. She won Tony awards for 'Flora, the Red Menace' in 1965 and 'The Act' in 1978, along with a third for Best Personal Achievement, resulting from her 1974 engagement at the Winter Garden Theatre. Nominated for an Academy Award for 'The Sterile Cuckoo' (1969), she won the best actress prize for her best-known film, 'Cabaret' (1972), which also won her a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA. She won an Emmy for 'Liza with a 'Z'' (1972) and was also the recipient of a Grammy Legend Award in 1989, making her one of the few artists who have won entertainment's top six awards.
