Kung Fu extends its run for a second time

Signature Theatre's World premiere production of David Henry Hwang's new play Kung Fu, directed by Leigh Silverman with choreography by Sonya Tayeh, has extended its run for a second time, and will now play through to 06 Apr 2014.

Kung Fu opened at the Irene Diamond Stage on 24 Feb 2014, following previews from 04 Feb 2014. The show was originally scheduled to close on 16 Mar 2014.

The show opened to mixed reviews: Never achieves the fluid grace in its dialogue and dramaturgy that it does in its action sequences (NYT); Flails every which way without connecting (NYP) Smart, entertaining bio-drama (Newsroom Jersey).

Kung Fu presents a portrait of international icon Bruce Lee's journey from troubled Hong Kong youth to martial arts legend, which blends dance, Chinese opera, martial arts and drama.

Bruce Lee, a young martial artist, comes to America from Hong Kong in the 1960's, with a dream as audacious as his talent: to become the biggest movie star in the world. To do so, he must struggle to overcome the West's view of China as weak and backwards, and of Asian men as less than truly masculine.

The cast features Cole Horibe (Bruce Lee), Phoebe Strole (Linda Lee), Emmanuel Brown, Clifton Duncan, Bradley Fong, Francis Jue, Peter Kim, Ari Loeb, Reed Luplau, Kristen Faith Oei, Jon Rua and Christopher Vo.

The creative team includes Dou Dou Huang (Specialty Choreography), David Zinn (Scenic Design), Anita Yavich(Costume Design), Ben Stanton (Lighting Design), Darron L West (Sound Design) and Darrel Maloney (Projection Design).
