Film adaptation of ‘The Prom’ to stream on Netflix

Ryan Murphy's adaptation of the Broadway musical will be available to watch from December 11th.

The premiere date of the film adaptation of The Prom on Netflix has been announced, as well as its lead cast. The movie will be available on the streaming service from December 11th, starring numerous Tony Award winners and newcomers.

The movie stars Meryl Streep as Dee Dee Allen, alongside James Corden as Barry Glickman and Andrew Rannells as Trent Oliver. Nicole Kidman plays Angie Dickinson, with Ariana DeBose as Alyssa Greene, Keegan-Michael Key as Mr. Hawkins, Kerry Washington as Mrs. Greene, Kevin Chamberlin as Sheldon Saperstein, as well as Jo Ellen Pellman as Emma Nolan.

The Prom is directed by Ryan Murphy, best known for his television work including Glee, Pose and The Politician, as well as nine seasons of American Horror Story. He's also directing the upcoming film adaptation of Matt Crowley's The Boys in the Band, which will be released on Netflix on September 30th.

Set in Indiana, The Prom follows Emma, a schoolgirl ushered to the sidelines when she wants to take her girlfriend to a dance. Originally written by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, music and lyrics are by Matthew Sklar and Beguelin respecitvely, with Murphy confirming the entire discography is in the movie adaptation.

The Prom was performed on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre for 10 months, with a final performance on August 11th, 2019.

In a review for New York Theatre Guide, Kathleen Campion said: "The Prom is a frothy, high-energy musical... it is exuberant."
