*Chicago* follows housewife-turned-murderess Roxie Hart, whose crimes make her a local celebrity thanks to her smooth-talking lawyer, Billy Flynn. She competes with vaudeville star Velma Kelly, also in prison, for the attention and sympathy of Billy and the press, in the hopes of getting acquitted.

This *Chicago* production is a revival, following the original Broadway premiere in 1975, which ran for two years. This iteration, currently playing at the [Ambassador Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/ambassador-theatre), celebrates its 26th anniversary on November 14; its first performance was on that date in 1996.

A 20th-anniversary review of *Chicago* on New York Theatre Guide reads, "All you need is a live band on stage, intoxicating the auditorium with that jazz-infused score from the genius that is John Kander and Fred Ebb and sprinkle it with that Bob Fosse-style choreography, and before you know it, you’ve razzle dazzled ‘em!"

*Dancin'* is making the leap! The first revival of this dance revue, now titled [*Bob Fosse’s Dancin'*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24249-bob-fosses-dancin-tickets), is set to open on Broadway this spring, 41 years after its original production opened. Performances begin March 2 ahead of a March 19 opening night at the [Music Box Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/music-box-theatre).

*Bob Fosse’s Dancin'* features two hours of Fosse's legendary choreography, including rarely performed routines. This revival puts a modern spin on his trademark moves, reimagining classic Fosse for the 21st century and celebrating a rich history of dancers and dance.

Fosse is the nine-time Tony-winning director and choreographer known for [*Chicago*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/22-chicago-tickets), *Cabaret*, *Pippin*, *Sweet Charity*, and more. The original production of *Dancin'*, which played the Broadhurst and later Ambassador Theatres from March 1978 to June 1982, won Fosse his seventh Tony Award for Best Choreography.

His choreography remains mostly intact for this revival, which is directed by Wayne Cilento. Cilento was a cast member in the original *Dancin'* who received a Tony nomination for his performance. He also directed this production's pre-Broadway run in San Diego earlier this year.

The cast for *Dancin'* on Broadway features dancers from across the country and the world, including Yeman Brown, Peter John Chursin, Dylis Croman, Jovan Dansberry, Karli Dinardo, Tony d’Alelio, Aydin Eyikan, Manuel Herrera, Gabriel Hyman, Kolton Krouse, Mattie Love, Krystal Mackie, Yani Marin, Nando Morland, Khori Michelle Petinaud, Ida Saki, Ron Todorowski, and Neka Zang. Additional casting has yet to be announced.

*Dancin'* also features scenic design by Robert Brill, costume design by Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung, lighting design by David Grill, sound design by Peter Hylenski, and video design by Finn Ross. Orchestrations, music supervision, and vocal and incidental music arrangements are by Jim Abbott, with music direction by Justin Hornback and new music and dance arrangements by David Dabbon.

Reproduction of Mr. Fosse’s choreography is by Christine Colby Jacques, with associate direction, musical staging, and additional choreographic reconstruction by Corinne McFadden Herrera; text consultation and additional material by Kirsten Childs; and assistant musical staging and additional choreographic reconstruction by Lauren Cannon.

Life is short, and for a girl who’s growing older around 4.5 times faster than the normal rate, every day is a reminder of that hard reality. 

*Kimberly Akimbo* takes place in 1999 in suburban New Jersey, where the title character is a 16-year-old high school student who looks like she’s 72 because of a rare condition that’s accelerated her aging. Kim wants to act like a regular teenager and for her parents to behave like responsible adults. 

Good luck with that. Her father, Buddy, drinks to distraction, while her pregnant mother, Pattie, imagines she’s got every medical malady in the book. Her aunt Debra is a serial scammer who pulls Kim and her classmates into her schemes. Kim boldly decides to live every day like it’s her last.

*Walking With Ghosts* began Broadway performances on October 18. Byrne's show is adapted from his same-named 2020 memoir, in which he shares stories of the "ghosts" — the people, places, and memories from his past – that shaped him and stick with him even today. He talks about his childhood in a bygone Ireland, his experience immigrating to America, his views on fame, and more.

## 1992: McDonald makes her Broadway debut.

Once McDonald took the stage for the first time, it was no secret that she'd soon become a major star. Her Broadway debut was in the *Secret Garden* musical in 1992, when she was 22 years old. She played Ayah, the main character's nursemaid.

## 1994: McDonald wins her first Tony.

McDonald's second Broadway gig was as Carrie Pipperidge in Rodgers and Hammerstein's *Carousel*. McDonald earned both her first Tony nomination and win for her performance, marking the first of many accolades in her career to come. She also won her next two nominations, for *Master Class* and *Ragtime*.

Fun fact: One of McDonald's *Carousel* co-stars was a then-unknown Taye Diggs in his Broadway debut. The two later co-starred on screen in *Private Practice*!

## 1996: McDonald makes her screen debut.

With a singing voice like hers, it's only natural that McDonald's early screen projects were theatre-adjacent. Her first film appearance was as an opera singer in the 1996 film *Seven Servants*, and her first TV appearance was three years later, as Grace Farrell in a TV movie version of *Annie*.

More recently, she's appeared in musical films like *Ricki and the Flash* as Maureen and the live-action adaptation of *Beauty and the Beast* as Mrs. Potts.

## 1999: McDonald plays her first lead role on Broadway.

McDonald starred as Marie Christine L'Adrese in *Marie Christine*, a musical adaptation of the Greek myth of Medea. Michael LaChiusa, who wrote and composed the show, created the title role especially for McDonald.

McDonald received her fourth Tony nomination, for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, for her performance. Heather Headley ultimately won the award, but McDonald received high praise for her singing and acting alike, cementing her leading lady status.

## 2007: McDonald stars in *110 in the Shade*.

McDonald received her sixth Tony nomination for starring as Lizzie Currie in the short-lived musical, though she lost the Best Leading Actress category to Christine Ebersole that year. *110 in the Shade* is notable, though, for being the show in which she met her now-husband, Will Swenson! They officially got together a few years later, marrying in 2012.

## 2008: McDonald wins two Grammy Awards.

By 2008, McDonald already had four Tony Awards under her belt, and it was time to expand her horizons. She hopped to the West Coast for a Los Angeles Opera production of *Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny*, an opera by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. She and her co-stars — one of whom was fellow Broadway vet [Patti LuPone](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/patti-lupone) — jointly won not one, but two Grammy Awards for the cast recording: Best Classical Album and Best Opera Recording.

## 2014: McDonald wins her sixth Tony and makes history.

McDonald's most recent Tony Award win was in 2014, when she starred as Billie Holiday in the play *Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill*. That was also the win that cemented her as a Broadway record holder. With that win, she had officially won Tonys in all four main acting categories: Best Leading Actress in a Play, Best Leading Actress in a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Play, and Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

She is the only actress to earn that distinction, and she's even surpassed it. McDonald has two Tonys each for Best Featured Actress in a Play and Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

## 2015: McDonald wins her first Emmy Award.

McDonald inched closer to [EGOT status](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/what-is-an-egot-a-guide-to-the-entertainment-quadruple-crown) in 2015, winning the Outstanding Special Class Program Emmy Award alongside her co-stars in *Sweeney Todd (Live from Lincoln Center)* in 2015. She had been nominated for Emmys three times before, all for performing in filmed adaptations of theatre shows: *Wit*, *A Raisin in the Sun*, and *Carousel (Live from Lincoln Center)*.

She followed up her Emmy win with multiple other major honors in the next few years, receiving the National Medal of Arts in 2016 and an induction into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2017.

## 2020-2021: McDonald performs during the pandemic.

Just because live theatre stopped in 2020 doesn't mean McDonald did. She participated in multiple virtual events while theatres were shuttered amid the pandemic. One of these was *Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration*, a virtual concert featuring Stephen Sondheim's greatest hits. ## 2022: McDonald stars in *Ohio State Murders* on Broadway.

[*Six*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/20737-six-musical-tickets) will welcome a new set of queens to the histo-remix. A new *Six* cast will take over from December 5. *Six* is at the [Lena Horne Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/lena-horne-theatre), previously named the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. The '90s are back — on stage! When David Lindsay-Abaire premiered his hit play [*Kimberly Akimbo*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25458-kimberly-akimbo-tickets) in 2001, boybands were still the talk of every teenage girl, baggy flannels and candy necklaces were in style, and great theatre — or great anything — was "all that and a bag of chips." Now that the '90s are in style again, it's fitting that Lindsay-Abaire's play, set in 1993, is back too, this time as a musical.

The musical adaptation retains the original story: a teenage girl with an aging condition that makes her look 72 (and a host of other problems) is trying to make the best of high school with the limited time she's got. The show premiered off Broadway last year and has now made a Broadway transfer to the [Booth Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/booth-theatre), with all its period glory intact. So '90s kids and '90s kids-at-heart will get to relive old dance trends, fashion, pop culture and more at *Kimberly Akimbo*, and those not yet born in the '90s will learn a little about what high school was like without texting or Instagram.

## '90s fashion

One of the major ways *Kimberly Akimbo* pays homage to the '90s is through the costumes. Costume designer Sarah Laux had a tough job sourcing the right pieces — but not just because the '90s are 30 years in the past.

"The '90s are kind of back, so she said the challenge is finding things that don't look like today's fashion throwing back, but like actual '90s looks — there is a difference," said Bonnie Milligan, who plays Kimberly's aunt Debra.

Laux succeeded. A look at Kimberly alone reveals that: One of her outfits consists of layered tees with a plaid shirt around her waist, wide-legged jeans, hair barrettes, chunky rings, and a candy necklace. That's a lot of '90s fashion trends in one place!

"Everyone looks baggy, vibrant, neon," said actor Justin Cooley of the look of the costumes at large. His co-star Olivia Elease Hardy added: "It's going to look like we stepped into an episode of *Saved by the Bell*."

## '90s pop culture

There are multiple little nods to '90s pop culture throughout *Kimberly Akimbo*. Kimberly's room, for one, is a '90s kid's dream, with magazine cutouts, colorful string lights, and of course, boyband posters — the '90s saw New Kids on the Block, NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys and others at their peak.

On the flip side, the musical also incorporates "nerd culture," as Cooley put it. His character Seth, a fellow outcast student who befriends Kimberly, makes most of these references.

"Dungeons & Dragons was big, *Lord of the Rings* — you can keep an eye out for small things that Seth may talk about or say that alludes to that type of culture," Cooley said. "That's one of my favorite parts for sure."

## '90s technology

Or lack thereof, that is. The '90s setting means social media, smartphones, and constant texting weren't part of teenagers' lives yet. When Lindsay-Abaire wrote the original *Kimberly Akimbo* in 2000, that was still the case, but it was important to him and composer Jeanine Tesori to keep 21st-century tech out of the musical, too.

"It is way more important, especially in high school, just to be with your peers and to talk to them," said Michael Iskander, who plays the student Aaron. "And it makes my character more anxious because he's in love, and every chance he gets to talk, his blood pressure rises."

'90s kids might remember the struggle. But in all seriousness, a lack of online avenues to build friendships outside school makes the characters' loneliness hold even more weight. They're not in the popular crowd, and there are few ways to find like-minded people.

"When you're at a tender young age and you're considered a weirdo at school, you never know who's with you," Tesori said. "There were no Facebook groups. There were none of those things. You went around with your lasers and your *Star Wars* things and your Dungeons & Dragons, and you don't know who's with you. It is really a show about finding that."

And when the characters do find that in-person connection, it's especially meaningful. "When we are meeting at the skating rink or meeting at school, it holds a different social importance because we can't just text each other all the time," said Nina White, who plays the student Teresa in the show.

## '90s dance moves

It wouldn't be a '90s musical without the dance trends that defined the decade. Choreographer Danny Mefford was a '90s kid himself, so choreographing the show came naturally to him.

"My whole high school was '96 to 2000," he said. "I didn't have to dig very deep or do any research; I just remembered it all.

"We've got a little Cabbage Patch going on in there; we've got a little Roger Rabbit," Mefford continued. These '90s moves and more are incorporated in with musical theatre dance, so keep an eye out for them! Perhaps they'll bring back some memories from audience members' own high school dances.

Their name is Lancelot! Taran Killam and Alex Brightman join the cast of the upcoming [*Spamalot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33129-spamalot-tickets) Broadway revival, playing at the [St. James Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre) from October 31. Opening night is November 16.

Killam returns to Broadway after playing King George III in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2017. He is better known, however, for his onscreen comedy performances on *madTV* and *Saturday Night Live*, in addition to multiple sitcoms. He will play Lancelot through January 7 only.

Brightman will step into the role from January 9. He is currently starring as Richard Dreyfuss in [*The Shark Is Broken*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28737-the-shark-is-broken-tickets) on Broadway, and he is also known for leading the Broadway musical adaptations of *Beetlejuice* and *School of Rock*. Brightman also played Lancelot at the Kennedy Center, where this *Spamalot* revival production premiered earlier this year under director/choreographer Josh Rhodes.

Ease on down to Broadway! A revival of [*The Wiz*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27115-the-wiz-tickets) will begin performances this spring at the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre). The first performance is March 29, and opening night is April 17.

The announcement of the New York production comes as *The Wiz* opened its pre-Broadway national tour in Baltimore, Maryland — where the Tony Award-winning original 1975 production premiered — last night.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black retelling of *The Wizard of Oz*, infusing it with jazz, pop, ballet, and Black cultural influences. The show features a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls and others, including Luther Vandross. The 2023 revival features additional material by Amber Ruffin, also represented on Broadway with *Some Like It Hot*.

Schele Williams directs the 2023 production, which features choreography by JaQuel Knight, scenic design by Hannah Beachler; costume design by Sharen Davis; lighting design by Ryan J. O’Gara; sound design by Jon Weston; projection design by Daniel Brodie; wig design by Charles LaPointe; makeup design by Kirk Cambridge-Del Pesche; music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert; vocal and music arrangements by Allen René Louis; and dance music arrangements by Adam Blackstone.

The comic duo play musical theatre composers writing a show about the inventor of the printing press.

Out there? Sure. Then again, the story of misbegotten Mormon missionaries in Uganda is also wacky. ## 2005 and 2006: Broadway debuts

In January 2005, Rannells took over as high school student Fender in *Hairspray*. Like a ’60s beehive hairdo, the actor ascended high to the lead role of teenage heartthrob Link Larkin. Rannells has stepped into key roles in other Broadway shows including Bob Gaudio in *Jersey Boys*, the title role in *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, and King George in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets). 

A year later, in January 2006, the musical *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* introduced Gad to Broadway audiences. He took over the role of allergy-prone William Barfee, a kid who uses his “magic foot” to write out words before spelling them.

## 2011: *The Book of Mormon*

In 2011, Rannells and Gad landed the lead roles in the irreverent, sometimes profane musical by Robert Lopez (*Frozen, Avenue Q*) and *South Park* creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Rannells and Gad starred as Elders Price and Cunningham: Mormon missionaries in Uganda who are young, eager, in over their head, and making things up as they go along. ## 2006 and 2016: The William Finn connection

Gad belted the kicky tune “Magic Foot” by William Finn in his Broadway debut in *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*. Rannells earned his second Tony nomination – Best Actor in a Supporting Role, as the ailing Whizzer – in the 2016 revival of *Falsettos*, a show with music, lyrics, and a book by Finn.

## 2013 and 2016: The Disney connection

Beyond the stage, Disney is common ground for the pair. For episodes of the animated TV series *Sofia the First*, Rannells voiced Morris, a goblin. Meanwhile, Gad voiced Olaf, the fan-fave snowman in the *Frozen* film franchise.

## 2023: *Gutenberg! The Musical!*

As Bud and Doug in this musical by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the actors wear a lot of hats – and that’s not a metaphor. They play the authors of a show about Johannes Gutenberg, which they pitch to potential investors with the means to finance the project. They act out the show playing characters whose names are on baseball caps.

'Six' on Broadway to host SIXth of the Month Series

Beginning in October, audiences at performances of the Tony Award-winning musical on the sixth of each month will be treated to special events and giveaways.

Your chance to get tickets has rolled along! [*Merrily We Roll Along*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27417-merrily-we-roll-along-tickets) will offer a digital lottery for tickets to all Broadway performances, which begin September 19 at the [Hudson Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/hudson-theatre).

*Merrily We Roll Along* will offer [lottery tickets via TodayTix](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/27417-merrily-we-roll-along-on-broadway). Entrants must download the TodayTix app on iOS or Android, where the lottery will open for entries every Sunday for the following week's performances. The lottery will remain open until noon the day before each performance. Users can set an alert to be notified when the lottery opens each week, and sharing the lottery on social media earns extra entries.

Winners are drawn between 1 and 4 p.m. the day before the performance, and they will have 30 minutes after being notified by email or text to purchase their tickets on the app. 

Jonathan Groff, [Daniel Radcliffe](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/daniel-radcliffe), and Lindsay Mendez star in *Merrily We Roll Along*, the first Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's 1984 musical. Maria Friedman directs the production, which premiered off Broadway in 2022.

The show follows, in reverse, the disintegration of a 20-year friendship between three people in the showbiz industry. ## For the reunion we've all been waiting for: *Gutenberg! The Musical*

Alli Mauzey, of 2023 Best Musical Tony Award winner *Kimberly Akimbo*, "couldn’t tell you what [*Gutenberg! The Musical*] is about," but that [Andrew Rannells](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-rannells) and Josh Gad on stage together again thrills her enough to go.

And for those wondering, they now play hapless composers trying to pitch an inaccurate Broadway musical about Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press.

## For the reunions you didn't know you needed: *I Need That*

This new comedy about a reclusive hoarder cleaning up his life sees the reunion of a celebrated creative duo. Pulitzer-nominated writer Theresa Rebeck and Tony-nominated director Moritz Von Stuelpnagel join forces once more following 2018's *Bernhardt/Hamlet*. 

“I love Theresa Rebeck’s writing, and her and Moritz Von Stuelpnagel seem to have a great time working together, said Reg Rogers of *Merrily We Roll Along*.

## For something old that feels new: *Purlie Victorious*

*Purlie Victorious* premiered on Broadway in 1961, starring playwright Ossie Davis and his wife, Ruby Dee, as a preacher and his aide in a scheme to reclaim his inheritance from an oppressive white landowner. But it hasn't been on Broadway since, so this revival — led by Tony winner Leslie Odom, Jr. and Tony nominee Kara Young — is all but new for many audiences today. “With so many heavy hitters, it is a must-see for me,” said [*Hadestown*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets)'s Brit West.

"They are making history with this first ever revival of this play, and I cannot wait to see it!" said Sierra Boggess of *Harmony*. Echoed her co-star Chip Zien, "A great cast lead by the thrilling Leslie Odom, Jr. marking his return to Broadway. With the great [director] Kenny Leon at the helm, this is a 'comedy' that couldn't be timelier and a theatrical event not to be missed."

Lakisha May of *Jaja's African Hair Braiding* has plenty of love for this show already. “I saw a production at Spelman College when I was a student there," she said. "Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee are definitely inspirations — their love, their work, their talent, and their activism. And I can’t wait to see this Broadway cast play!”

## For a blast from the past: *Back to the Future* and *Merrily We Roll Along*

Two shows on Broadway are taking audiences back in time this fall. The stage adaptation of *Back to the Future*, which opened in August, zips to 1985 and 1955 at 88 miles per hour. According to *Wicked*'s William Youmans, the man who makes it all happen — scientist Doc Brown, played by Roger Bart — is reason enough to go: "Roger Bart is one of the funniest actors alive."

A few blocks away, the first Broadway revival of *Merrily We Roll Along* tells the story of a crumbling 20-year friendship in reverse. Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez play the doomed trio of pals Frank, Charley, and Mary.

"I have a special affection for *Merrily We Roll Along*," said Amelia Cormack of *Hadestown*. "It was our last show at drama school, and I got to play Mary, so it’s a definite nostalgia moment. Plus, this cast is incredible.”

## For an unexpected wave of emotion: *The Shark Is Broken*

This *Jaws*-inspired play, on through November 16, delivers great-white-sized laughs as it dramatizes the famous feud between Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider on set. What struck *Back to the Future* star Hugh Coles, though, was how moving it is: [Ian Shaw](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/interviews/ian-shaw-sinks-his-teeth-into-his-fathers-legacy-in-the-shark-is-broken) co-wrote and stars in *The Shark Is Broken* in his father's memory.

"I had the privilege of watching *The Shark is Broken* in London," Coles said. "You’d think the best speech in the show would be about the U.S.S. Indianapolis — but there’s a beautifully written, moving and powerfully delivered monologue about Shaw’s father that blows it out of the water (pun intended)."

## For a niche story with universal appeal: *Jaja’s African Hair Braiding*

Jocelyn Bioh is known for her lighthearted, widely appealing comedies that shed light on the experiences of Black women in Africa and America. Her latest work, *Jaja’s African Hair Braiding*, tells a story of love, community, and gentrification by way of a group of women in the title Harlem salon.

"Jocelyn has an incredible gift of comedy (which we saw in *School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play*) that truly is necessary in this moment in time," said Leandra Ellis-Gaston of [*Six*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/20737-six-musical-tickets). "On top of that, this show speaks about a very niche and special experience that Black women, particularly in New York, have of getting our hair braided. We talk about representation in regards to seeing our Black bodies on stage, but it’s taking it a step forward to see and share our routine experiences on a Broadway stage."

## For a full house of comedic talent: *The Cottage*

*Will & Grace*'s Eric McCormack, *Legally Blonde: The Musical*'s Laura Bell Bundy, *Saturday Night Live*'s Alex Moffat, *Tootsie*'s Lilli Cooper, and more all under one roof? You'll have to see this old-fashioned farce, about a web of infidelities unraveling, to believe it.

## For an immersive theatre experience: *Here Lies Love*

Immersive theatre — in which the audience participates in the show, which unfolds all around them — is rare on Broadway. But *Here Lies Love* turned the [Broadway Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/broadway-theatre) into a disco nightclub to tell the story of infamous dictator (and disco enthusiast) Imelda Marcos of the Philippines. ## For a royally good laugh: *Spamalot*

This musical based on *Monty Python and the Holy Grail* hasn't held court on Broadway since winning the Best Musical Tony Award in 2005. Broadway stars with fond memories of the movie, the Broadway premiere, or their former co-stars now headlining the revival are now planning to take their seats at the round table.

“I am most excited to see my dear, dear friends (and former co-workers at *Hamilton*), James Monroe Iglehart and Nik Walker, in *Spamalot*," said *Merrily We Roll Along*'s Krystal Joy Brown. "I cannot wait to get to enjoy them in all of their hilarious glory! Also, I grew up on *Monty Python*, so it’s a bit nostalgic, and who doesn’t want a good laugh and a good time at the theatre?”

Julie Benko, of *Harmony* added: "I remember bringing my sister to the original production back when I was in high school, and now, I can't wait to bring my husband. I suspect he's going to laugh so hard he pees himself and will then spend the following six months demanding shrubberies around the house."

## For the next generation of Broadway: *How to Dance in Ohio*

This new musical, based on the Peabody Award-winning documentary about autistic young adults coming of age, is bringing many new faces to the world of Broadway. Director Sammi Cannold, writers Rebekah Greer Melocik and Jacob Yandura, choreographer Mayte Natalio, and all seven autistic lead actors make their debuts with this show.

“I'm excited to see a brand-new musical on Broadway, and I look forward to seeing how the team has adapted this beautiful story about human connection from the documentary to a musical," said Liana Hunt of *Back to the Future*. ## For a timely, touching drama: *Prayer for the French Republic*

Joshua Harmon's epic drama, about multiple generations of a French Jewish family facing similar doubts about assimilation and safety, received near-universal acclaim for its 2021 Off-Broadway premiere. It's perhaps more poignant and relevant now, as the show prepares to begin Broadway performances in December.

"I saw it in its Off-Broadway run and was blown away by the writing, direction, the performances - everything," Benko said. "It's a complex look at contemporary Jewish life and we need those plays on Broadway now more than ever."

Broadway fall preview: Stars share the shows they can't wait to see

Cast members from this fall's hottest new shows and long-running hits share which new Broadway musicals and plays they're looking forward to this season.

Rush to her window! [*Melissa Etheridge: My Window*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25987-melissa-etheridge-my-window-tickets), a Broadway solo show from the award-winning musician, will offer rush tickets to all performances, which begin tonight, September 14, at the [Circle in the Square Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/circle-in-the-square-theatre).

Rush tickets are available for $47.50 the morning of each performance [on the TodayTix app](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/25987-melissa-etheridge--my-window-on-broadway), beginning at 9 a.m. Users can download the TodayTix app on an iOS or Android device and purchase up to two tickets  for that afternoon or evening's show.

A limited number of rush tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Users can set an alert on the TodayTix app to be notified when rush tickets are available each day.

In *My Window*, Etheridge performs her Grammy Award-winning hits, previously unreleased songs from her early career, and everything in between as she shares stories from her life. This intimate show premiered off Broadway last year to critical acclaim, and now runs on Broadway through November 19.

The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter's theatrical solo concert is playing on Broadway for two months only at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Wait for it. Ever since Leslie Odom, Jr. wrapped his award-winning and career-boosting star turn in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2016, we’ve been cooling our heels in anticipation of his Broadway return. 

Seven years later, he’s back – and not in a musical. Odom shoulders the title role in the first Broadway revival of Ossie Davis’s 1961 play, [*Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27642-purlie-victorious-tickets). Odom plays a traveling preacher on a mission in smalltown Georgia.

Odom has been busy while he’s been off stage. He stars opposite Ellen Burstein in horror sequel *The Exorcist: Believer*, opening October 3. Last year, he was part of the starry ensemble of the thriller *Glass Onion*. But his roots as a theatre star remain strong.

Seasons of love can bring Broadway firsts. In 1998, at 17 years old, Odom made his debut as a replacement in Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer-winning rock musical. He covered multiple roles, including a cop and Paul, who shines in “Life Support,” a reminder that there’s “no day but today.”

As if a theatre fan needs a recap: The 2012 NBC series covered the ups, downs, and sideways of creating a Marilyn Monroe musical. Odom played Sam, an ensemble member who is friends with Ivy ([Megan Hilty](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/megan-hilty-jennifer-simard-to-lead-death-becomes-her-musical-in-chicago), a contender for the star part), and dates the composer, Tom ([Christian Borle](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/christian-borle), now in [*Some Like It Hot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24262-some-like-it-hot-tickets)).

## *Leap of Faith*

Based on the 1992 Steve Martin movie, the 2012 Broadway musical adaptation starred Raúl Esparza as a con man faking it as a holy roller. Odom, reprising his role from a 2010 Los Angeles run, played the upright Isaiah Sturdevant. The show’s reviews were mixed, but one critic called out Odom as “fantastic.”

Based loosely on the Shakespeare classic *Othello*, the hip-hop-flavored musical by Matt Sax and Eric Rosen is set in a war-torn, not-so-distant future, where broken ties between two brothers parallel the relationship between Othello and Iago. Odom played Markos, a warmongering commander. The Public Theater presentation ran in 2013.

In 2014, Odom starred alongside Lin-Minuel Miranda and [Karen Olivo](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/karen-olivo) in *Rent* creator Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical about a struggling songwriter, Jon, who’s questioning his future. In the weeklong run with the Encores! Off-Center series of rarely revived musicals, Odom played the artist’s best friend.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2015 landmark musical about Alexander Hamilton cast a brilliant spotlight on Odom, who confidently stepped into it and slayed as Aaron Burr, “the damn fool that shot” and killed the “$10 Founding Father.” He won a Tony and a Grammy and left indelible musical marks with “Wait for It,” “The Room Where It Happens,” and “Dear Theodosia.”

## *One Night in Miami...*

Odom earned an Oscar nomination for his portrait of Sam Cooke in this 2020 film directed by Regina King. Author Kemp Powers based the movie script on his 2013 play of the same name that imagines what went down at an actual February 1964 meeting of four African American icons: Cooke, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Jim Brown. Odom’s role included performing “A Change Is Gonna Come,” a song that would emerge as a civil rights anthem.

Purlie Victorious on Broadway

The Tony and Grammy Award-winning *Hamilton* star has a long career on and off Broadway, and he now returns to the stage to lead *Purlie Victorious*.

A new revival of *Uncle Vanya* will premiere on Broadway this spring, in a new translation by Heidi Schreck. Lila Neugebauer will direct the Lincoln Center Theater production, which begins performances at the [Vivian Beaumont Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/vivian-beaumont-theater) on April 2 ahead of an April 24 opening.

The classic play by Anton Chekhov follows the title character and his niece, whose lives are upended when Sonya's father and his wife move in. Past resentments, troubled romances, and family tensions erupt on a once-calm family farm.

*Uncle Vanya*, which premiered in 1899 and has received 10 prior Broadway productions, remains one of Chekhov's best-known and most beloved works. This new version is by Heidi Schreck, best known for her Pulitzer- and Tony-nominated work *What the Constitution Means to Me*.

Director Lila Neugebauer has two productions on Broadway this season: before *Uncle Vanya*, she directs Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins's [*Appropriate*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/31352-appropriate-tickets), starring [Sarah Paulson](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/sarah-paulson), in the fall season. She is also known for directing *The Waverly Gallery* on Broadway, *The Wolves* off Broadway, and the film *Causeway* starring Jennifer Lawrence.

The *Uncle Vanya* creative team also includes set designer Mimi Lien, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Lap Chi Chu, and sound designers Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake.

Casting has yet to be announced.
