Everything you need to know about 'Schmigadoon!' on Broadway

New York doctors Josh Skinner and Melissa Gimble set out to recharge the spark that’s gone missing from their romance, but they instead find themselves in Schmigadoon, a magical town that's like a classic Broadway musical come to life. Getting stuck there may hold the pair’s secret to finding true love — but will that be with each other?

From April 4 to September 6, 2026, Schmigadoon! plays at the Nederlander Theatre, located at 208 W. 41st St. between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. The building was originally constructed as a carpenter’s shop in 1920. In 1980, it was renamed after the founder of the Nederlander Organization, which owns nine Broadway venues and produces Broadway shows.

Plays and musicals that have recently run at 1,235-seat theatre include All Out: Comedy About Ambition, Jeff Ross: Take a Banana for the Ride, Redwood, The Who’s Tommy, and Shucked.

Schmigadoon! runs approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes with one intermission. The typical duration of a Broadway musical is 1.5-3 hours and may include a 15-minute intermission.

Schmigadoon! on Broadway is recommended for patrons ages 10 and up. There are brief suggestive moments, but like most Golden Age musicals, the content is largely family-friendly.

Five years after Schmigadoon! delivered a delightful Broadway homage to TV audiences, it was adapted for the stage. But its theatrical inspirations run seven decades deep.

• 1943-1964: Broadway had its Golden Age, a peak period for the advancement of American musical theatre. Over 30 now-classic musicals debuted during those years. Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! is considered the first Golden Age musical, and Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joseph Stein's Fiddler on the Roof is the last.
• July 2021: The Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon! made its season 1 debut. It seized inspiration from 1940s and 1950s Golden Age musicals.
• May 2023: Season 2 of the TV series, titled Schmicago and inspired by '60s and '70s musicals, debuts. It is not incorporated into the stage musical.
• January 2025: The Schmigadoon! stage musical debuted at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center, where it had a two-week pre-Broadway run.
• April 2026: Schmigadoon! premieres on Broadway at the Nederlander Theatre.

The Schmigadoon! musical has a book and score by Cinco Paul, who co-created the same-named Apple TV+ series with Ken Daurio. Paul wrote the songs in the TV show, winning the 2022 Emmy Award for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for the song “Corn Puddin’.”

With Daurio, Paul also wrote songs and scripts for the animated films Despicable Me, The Lorax, Horton Hears a Who!, and The Secret Life of Pets.

• Josh Skinner: A sometimes cynical surgeon and Melissa’s boyfriend. He's not into musicals — at all.
• Melissa Gimble: An optimistic OB-GYN, Josh’s girlfriend, and a big fan of musicals. Together, she and Josh recall the pair of American tourists who discover the title town in the musical Brigadoon.
• Mildred Layton: A preacher’s wife and self-appointed rigid moral compass of the town. She recalls Mrs. Shinn from The Music Man.
• Mayor Menlove: A kind-hearted mayor with clearly closeted desires.
• Florence Menlove: The mayor’s faithful yet oblivious wife who yearns for excitement.
• Betsy: A farmer’s daughter who believes, body and soul, in romance. She's inspired by Ado Annie in Oklahoma!, with a hint of Liesl from The Sound of Music.
• Emma Tate: A sensitive, independent schoolteacher with a family secret. She borrows from Marian Paroo of The Music Man, Anna Leonowens of The King and I, and Maria von Trapp of The Sound of Music.
• Carson: A sweet young boy inspired by Winthrop from The Music Man.
• Doc: Schmigadoon’s reserved resident physician with a romantic streak. He resembles Captain von Trapp from The Sound of Music.
• Danny Bailey: A rebellious but dreamy townie who runs the local carnival. He reflects Billy Bigelow from Carousel.

Broadway cast includes two-time Tony Award nominee Alex Brightman as Josh Skinner, Sara Chase as Melissa Gimble, Ann Harada as Florence Menlove (reprising her role from the TV show), McKenzie Kurtz as Betsy, Isabelle McCalla as Emma Tate, Ivan Hernandez as Doc, Tony nominee Brad Oscar as Mayor Menlove, Ana Gasteyer as Mildred Layton, Max Clayton as Danny Bailey, and Ayaan Diop as Carson.

Yes, the Schmigadoon! musical is based on season 1 of the same-named Apple TV+ series, which began streaming in 2021. The show also has a second season, dubbed Schmicago and based on '60s and '70s musicals, that debuted in 2023 with much of the season 1 cast in new roles.
