She's the greatest star! Lea Michele, the *Glee* star who currently plays Fanny Brice in [*Funny Girl*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24232-funny-girl-tickets) on Broadway, performed "I'm the Greatest Star" on *Late Night With Seth Meyers* on December 5.

Meyers also interviewed Michele about *Funny Girl*, including how Barbra Streisand, who originated the role of Fanny on screen and on Broadway, gave her a gold envelope of approval.

In *Funny Girl*, Michele stars as the real-life Ziegfeld Follies performer Fanny, who risks fame and fortune for a dangerous romance with the gambler Nick Arnstein. The current revival is the first Broadway production of *Funny Girl* since its 1964 premiere.

Fire up the grill! After a world-premiere Off-Broadway run, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play [*Fat Ham*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27141-fat-ham-tickets) has set a Broadway transfer. Performances will begin at the [American Airlines Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/american-airlines-theatre) on March 21 ahead of an April 12 opening night, with the limited engagement running through June 25.

James Ijames's play is a send-up of Shakespeare's *Hamlet*, setting the action at a present-day Southern barbecue. Its central character — a Black, queer man named Juicy — is tasked with killing his uncle to avenge his father's death, like Hamlet. But unlike Hamlet, Juicy is questioning whether strength or softness makes him a man, and he struggles to accept that violence is his only option.

Philadelphia's Wilma Theater presented *Fat Ham*'s virtual world premiere in 2021. The Public Theater mounted its in-person and Off-Broadway premiere, co-produced by National Black Theatre. Three days before performances began, the show won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. 

*Fat Ham* went on to extend by six weeks due to popular demand and receive critical acclaim. A [four-star New York Theatre Guide review](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/fat-ham-off-broadway-review) reads, "Running 90 unbroken minutes, it is by turns hilarious, chaotic and weirdly lovely... This slice of life leans hard into comedy, not tragedy, as it ponders big things that matter: personal identity, sexuality, transparency, living out loud."

Saheem Ali directed the Off-Broadway production. The entire Off-Broadway cast returns for *Fat Ham* on Broadway, including Nikki Crawford as Tedra, Chris Herbie Holland as Tio, Billy Eugene Jones as Rev/Pap, Adrianna Mitchell as Opal, Calvin Leon Smith as Larry, Marcel Spears as Juicy, and Benja Kay Thomas as Rabby.

The creative team includes scenic designer Maruti Evans, costume designer Dominique Fawn Hill, lighting designer Bradley King, sound designer Mikaal Sulaiman, hair and wig designer Earon Chew Nealey, illusion designer Skylar Fox, and choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie.

Though the production takes place at the American Airlines Theatre, which is owned by Roundabout Theatre Company, *Fat Ham* is not a Roundabout production.

It’s Britney, Broadway! The new jukebox musical [*Once Upon a One More Time*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27127-once-upon-a-one-more-time-on-broadway) will come to the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre) this summer, making it one of the first shows to play in the 2023-24 Broadway season. Performances begin on May 13 ahead of a June 22 opening night.

*Once Upon a One More Time* mashes up two popular properties: the song catalog of Britney Spears and fairytale princesses. Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, and more wish for a new story for their reading group — and suddenly, a fairy godmother brings them Betty Friedan’s *The Feminine Mystique*.

Empowered by the trailblazing feminist book, the princesses discover new possibilities for their lives besides waiting around for a prince to bring them happily ever after. This story, written by Jon Hartmere, is set to Spears’s Grammy Award-winning, chart-topping hits including “Toxic,” "...Baby One More Time," "Oops!...I Did It Again," “Womanizer,” and “Circus.”

*Once Upon a One More Time* has been in the works since 2017, and Spears herself attended an early 2018 presentation. The official world premiere was set for 2019 at the Nederlander Theatre in Chicago, but that production was postponed to 2020 and ultimately canceled amid the pandemic.

The show was then set to open directly on Broadway in 2022, but changed course once again and had its pre-Broadway world premiere with Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C. A Washington Post review of that production called *Once Upon a One More Time* “an evening of buoyant delight.”

Keone and Mari Madrid direct and choreograph the production. The creative team also includes creative consultant David Leveaux, set designer Anna Fleischle, costume and hair designer Loren Elstein, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, sound designer Andrew Keister, and projection designer Sven Ortel.

*Once Upon a One More Time* Broadway casting has yet to be announced. The D.C. cast for *Once Upon a One More Time* included Briga Heelan as Cinderella, Justin Guarini as Prince Charming, Emily Skinner as Stepmother, Aisha Jackson as Snow White, Brooke Dillman as The O.F.G. (Original Fairy Godmother), Mimi Scardulla as Stepsisters Belinda, Tess Soltau as Stepsister Betany, Ashley Chiu as Sleeping Beauty, Raymond J. Lee as Clumsy, Wonu Ogunfowora as Rapunzel, Ryan Steele as Prince Erudite, Morgan Weed as Princess and the Pea, Lauren Zakrin as Little Mermaid, and Michael McGrath as the Narrator. Adrianna Weir and Mila Weir shared the role of Little Girl.

*Once Upon a One More Time* will join two other Broadway musicals that include Britney Spears songs: [*& Juliet*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25598-and-juliet-tickets) and [*Moulin Rouge! The new musical features the songs of Britney Spears.

Ease on down the road! The Tony Award-winning musical *The Wiz* is eyeing a Broadway revival following an upcoming national tour. The tour will kick off at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore, where *The Wiz* premiered in 1974, and the limited Broadway engagement is set to go up in spring 2024.

The new production is directed by Schele Williams and choreographed by Jaquel Knight. Williams has performed in *Rent* and associate directed *Motown the Musical*, and she will make her Broadway directorial debut with *The Wiz*. Knight also makes his Broadway debut.

"It is a dream come true to be a part of what I consider the epitome of Black excellence," Knight said in a statement. "There’s not one piece of art that has had influence on popular culture like *The Wiz*. I’m humbled to not only have the opportunity to leave my own mark on a true work of art, but to continue the storytelling and legacy building on the beauty of blackness through dance, movement, and attitude."

This revival of *The Wiz* will also feature additional material by Amber Ruffin, currently represented on Broadway as co-writer of [*Some Like It Hot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24262-some-like-it-hot-tickets), and music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black adaptation of L. Frank Baum's *The Wizard of Oz*. The show features a book by William F. Brown and music by Charlie Smalls and others. The show's 1975 Broadway premiere won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score, and is known for songs like "Home" and "Ease on Down the Road."

"I am so happy to know a new generation will be discovering these wonderful songs and learn of my father’s extraordinary talent," said Michael Smalls, Charlie Smalls's son.

*The Wiz* also received a 1978 film adaptation starring Diana Ross, [Michael Jackson](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/23379-mj-the-musical-tickets), Ted Ross, Mabel King, Richard Pryor and Lena Horne.

'The Wiz' plans Broadway revival in 2024

The new production will first play a national tour.

Welcome (back) to the Moulin Rouge! [Aaron Tveit](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/aaron-tveit), who originated the lead role of Christian in [*Moulin Rouge! The Musical*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/15911-moulin-rouge-the-musical-on-broadway-tickets), will return to the Broadway production for 12 weeks only, beginning January 17. He temporarily replaces Derek Klena, who will return to the production on April 11.

Tveit won the 2020 Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his performance in *Moulin Rouge!*. He is also known for starring on Broadway in *Next to Normal*, *Catch Me If You Can*, and *Wicked*, and on TV in *Grease Live!*, *Schmigadoon!*, *Gossip Girl*, and *BrainDead*.

Two weeks after Tveit rejoins the *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* cast, two new cast members will also step in. On February 7, David Harris and André Ward will take over the roles of The Duke of Monroth and Toulouse-Lautrec, respectively.

Tony nominee Sahr Ngaujah will play his final performance as Toulouse-Lautrec on February 5, and Declan Bennett will depart the role of the Duke on January 15, with Dylan Paul taking over from January 17 to February 5.

Based on Baz Luhrmann's award-winning film and featuring dozens of pop music hits, *Moulin Rouge! The Musical* follows the writer Christian as he falls into a star-crossed romance with the title nightclub's star showgirl, Satine. The show won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Two new cast members have also been announced.

Since [*The Lion King*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/42-the-lion-king-tickets) movie came out in 1994, and the Broadway musical three years later, people who grew up the tale of a young lion cub's journey to kingship have since introduced their own children to the story. As the famous opening number of the musical goes, that's the circle of life.

*The Lion King*'s music — penned by Elton John, Tim Rice, and more — has proven especially timeless. All the hit songs from the film — like "Circle of Life" and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" — remain in the musical, with plenty of new additions. Multiple songs feature lyrics sung partly or entirely in African languages like Swahili and Zulu, a nod to the cultural traditions from which the story draws.

## "Circle of Life"

This opening number is recognizable from its first notes. "Circle of Life" takes place as King Mufasa and Queen Sarabi welcome their new cub, Simba. All the animals of the Pride Lands — giraffes, antelopes, zebras, elephants, birds — gather in front of Pride Rock to witness the historic moment. On the Broadway stage, intricate life-size puppetry makes this number especially wondrous to watch.

The song's most famous portion is its opening chant: "Nants ingonyama bagithi baba, sithi uhm ingonyama." These lyrics are in the African language Zulu, and they roughly translate to, "Here comes a lion, father. Oh yes, it’s a lion."

## "Grasslands Chant"

*The Lion King*'s action kicks off in earnest once Simba has grown up a little bit. "Grasslands Chant" underscores his transition from infancy to childhood. This song's lyrics are also in Zulu, and they foreshadow Simba's future as king. Phrases like "busa ngo thando bo, busa lomhlaba" translate to "rule with love, rule the Earth."

## "The Lioness Hunt"

The title of this song, another Zulu chant, says it all. As a group of lionesses go out to hunt, they chant lyrics that translate to, "We, father, are going to hunt, father." Two of those lionesses are Sarabi and Sarafina, the mother of Simba's best friend, Nala. While their moms are away, Simba and Nala see an opportunity to explore the forbidden parts of the Pride Lands.

## "I Just Can't Wait to Be King"

On their journey, Simba boasts to Nala about growing up and ruling the land someday — with no one to tell him what to do. The song includes a few lion puns like, "I'm gonna be the 'mane' event like no king was before!"

"I Just Can't Wait to Be King" is a classic "I want" number, a common song type in musical theatre where a main character sings about their main goal in the story.

## "Chow Down"

Simba and Nala find out the hard way why certain lands are forbidden. The pair comes face-to-face with hungry hyenas Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed, but luckily, Mufasa rescues the cubs before they get eaten.

## "They Live in You"

In this song, Mufasa teaches Simba a lesson about obedience and discipline, reminding his son he needs these virtues to be a good king someday. He tells Simba that all the kings of the past are watching over him from the stars to provide guidance and strength.

During this song, Mufasa takes off the mask he's wearing and lays down his weapons to emphasize that he's not acting as a king in that moment, but as a father giving heartfelt advice to his son. This song's title parallels that of a later song with a similar theme, "He Lives in You."

## "Be Prepared"

"Be Prepared" is one of the most beloved Disney villain songs in history, so naturally, it becomes a major number in the musical. This is the first major scene the audience spends with Scar, who raises an army of hyenas to help him usurp the throne from his brother.

"I'll be king undisputed, respected, saluted, and seen for the wonder I am," Scar sings. "Yes, my teeth and ambitions are bared — be prepared!"

## "The Stampede"

This song is another Zulu chant, whose lyrics loosely translate to "Here it comes!" over and over again. The "it" in question is wildebeest as they stampede. Only the final line of the song is different: "Baba, wa mi baba wa mi baba wam," which means, "Father, oh my father!"

## "Rafiki Mourns"

Scar kills Mufasa in the stampede, and Rafiki sings a mournful chant in the aftermath. In Zulu, she swears to avenge the king's death and affirms that peace and prosperity will still reign supreme in the Pride Lands.

## "Hakuna Matata"

Devastated by Mufasa's death — and convinced he is to blame — Simba runs away from the Pride Lands. In the desert, he meets Timon the meerkat and Pumbaa the warthog, who teach Simba their motto: "Hakuna matata." "It means no worries for the rest of your days," they sing. "It's our problem-free philosophy!"

"Hakuna matata" is a Swahili phrase that literally translates to "no trouble."

## "One by One"

The opening song of Act 2 is best experienced live. As the song progresses, puppets of colorful, lively birds give way to vultures and animal skeletons, showing the misery Scar's rule has brought the kingdom.

The animals sing a song of weariness and hope for better days. The Zulu lyrics "ibabeni njalo bakithi, ninga dinwa, ninga phelelwa nga mandla" translate to, "Hold on tight, my people. Don’t get weary; don’t lose your strength."

## "The Madness of King Scar"

Scar hasn't fulfilled any of his promises, letting his subjects go hungry and letting the Pride Lands fall into a drought. Yet, he wonders why no one respects him as a ruler. "The Madness of King Scar" shows him rapidly shift between arrogance that he'll save the kingdom and paranoia that he'll lose everything.

## "Shadowland"

When Simba left the Pride Lands, he left Nala alone, but she never stopped fighting for her friend. She finally decides to find Simba once and for all and bring him home. Nala and the lionesses sing this song, half in English and half in Zulu, to mourn the current, dark state of the Pride Lands and wish Nala success.

"I cannot stay here, my family, but I'll remember my pride," she says. "Pride" has a double meaning, referring to the pride of lions that is her family, and her own pride and respect for her kingdom.

## "Endless Night"

Simba sings this ballad under a starry sky. He feels lost, alone, and abandoned by his father, who once told him he'd always be watching from the stars. "I dream of the day when you were by my side, guiding my path," Simba sings. "Father, I can't find the way."

"Endless Night" is exclusive to the *Lion King* Broadway show, but its melody is taken from "Lala," a song on the *Lion King* film's companion album *Rhythm of the Pride Lands*.

## "Can You Feel the Love Tonight"

This song underscores Simba's happy reunion with Nala, who reignites the connection between them and urges Simba to return to the Pride Lands. The song is also a bittersweet one for Timon and Pumbaa, as they realize Simba must leave them and their carefree lifestyle to return where he belongs.

"Can You Feel the Love Tonight" is famous as a pop song in its own right, charting in both the U.K. and U.S. In 1995, the tune won an Oscar for Best Original Song, and John won the Grammy for Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. He certainly felt the love!

## "He Lives in You"

Despite Nala's insistence, Simba is reluctant to go back to the Pride Lands, as he believes himself responsible for his father's death and is therefore unworthy of the throne. In this inspiring, touching song, Rafiki reminds Simba that his father lives on in spirit. Sure enough, Mufasa appears in the stars and seconds Rafiki's statement, telling Simba to pursue his rightful destiny as king.

## "Simba Confronts Scar"

This song underscores the climactic battle for the throne between Simba and Scar. "Simba Confronts Scar" is an instrumental tune, but while the music plays, Simba battles his uncle for control and forces him to admit he murdered Mufasa.

## "King of Pride Rock/Circle of Life (Reprise)"

With Simba triumphant, order and light return to the Pride Lands. All the animals join in a final reprise of the opening track in which Simba and Nala present their own newborn cub. The ending scene parallels the opening scene, showing that the Circle of Life is back in balance.

## "The Morning Report"

Audiences who saw *The Lion King* early in its Broadway run might remember "The Morning Report," in which Zazu delivers Mufasa his daily briefing on the state of his kingdom. In 2010, the song was cut from the show, but you can still listen to it on the original cast recording.

Chastain has starred in works from many time-honored playwrights, from Shakespeare to Strindberg. Her latest venture sees her return to Broadway — for the first time since 2012 — in Henrik Ibsen's trailblazing drama *A Doll's House*, now newly adapted by Pulitzer finalist Amy Herzog. ## *Romeo and Juliet*

A Chastain by any other name would sound as sweet. The actress's professional stage debut was in *Romeo and Juliet* in 1998. The production by TheatreWorks in Palo Alto, California was set during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, with the then-teenaged Chastain playing an Irish Catholic Juliet opposite Travis Engle as a Protestant Romeo.

Said Robert Kelley, the artistic director of TheatreWorks who cast her, "She was beautiful, high-energy, charismatic, and she had a real joy about her... The audience just completely fell in love with her; I guess everybody did." And so did recruiters — Chastain's performance led her to a successful audition for Juilliard that launched her career.

## *The Seagull*

Toward the end of her second year at Juilliard, Chastain played Arkadina in Anton Chekhov's *The Seagull*. She previously suffered from anxiety about failing at the school, but this production was “when my confidence started to kick in,” she later told The New York Times. Little did she know she'd have a long future of stardom ahead of her.

In an almost-full-circle moment, the Chastain-led *A Doll's House* was supposed to premiere in London in the same season as a production of *The Seagull*, led by Emilia Clarke.

Other productions Chastain did at Juilliard include *The King Stag* and *The Patient Fancy*, both in 2003. Her co-star in the latter was Broadway alum Michael Urie.

*Salome* wasn't just a gig; it was practically a whole era for Chastain. Al Pacino decided to direct and star in his own version of Oscar Wilde's tragedy after performing it on Broadway in 2003. On Nelson's recommendation, he cast Chastain as the title princess.

She first played Salome, a princess who seduces John the Baptist, in 2006 at Los Angeles's Wadsworth Theatre. Chastain reprised the role in two companion films to Pacino's production: the documentary *Wilde Salomé* (2011) and the straightforward play-to-film adaptation *Salomé* (2013).

Chastain's only other Off-Broadway credit following *Rodney's Wife* was a four-hour futuristic *Othello* with The Public Theater in 2009. She played the title character's wife, Desdemona, opposite John Ortiz as Othello and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the villainous Iago. Hilton Als [wrote in the New Yorker](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2009/10/05/the-black-man-cometh) that Chastain found "a beautiful maternal depth in Desdemona."

In 2011, Chastain brought her Shakespeare chops from stage to screen. At long last, in 2012, Chastain made her Broadway debut in the most recent revival of the 1947 play *The Heiress*. As the title character, Catherine Sloper, she played a woman hardened by cruel treatment and the loss of her love. A [Vulture review](https://www.vulture.com/2012/11/theater-review-the-heiress-jessica-chastain.html) of her performance read, "She’s marvelously put together on stage, and her final scenes — where Catherine finally declares her independence from the vampiric men who’ve ruined her life — are very well done, sometimes just shy of devastating."

At the time, Chastain was at a peak in her film career, having delivered acclaimed performances in movies like *The Help* and *Tree of Life*. A [New York Times review of *The Heiress*](https://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/02/theater/reviews/the-heiress-with-jessica-chastain-at-walter-kerr-theater.html) introduced her as "the latest It Girl of thinking person’s cinema," and with her Broadway debut, she proved her versatility.

Chastain seems to have an affinity for classic plays — with Chekhov and Shakespeare under her belt, she moved to August Strindberg in 2014. She played the title aristocrat who has a whirlwind romance with a valet named John (Colin Farrell) in Liv Ullmann's film adaptation.

*Miss Julie* was one of three films Chastain starred in that year; if it didn't come across your radar, it's likely because one of her other projects, Christopher Nolan's *Interstellar*, dominated the headlines.

## *A Most Violent Year*

Her third film project of 2014 was *A Most Violent Year*, in which she played the merciless wife of Oscar Isaac's struggling oil company owner. The film wasn't based on a work of theatre, but Chastain's character, who urges her husband to violently fight back against hijackers that threaten his success, was inspired by Lady Macbeth. A San Francisco Chronicle review of the film [praised Chastain](http://www.sfgate.com/movies/article/A-Most-Violent-Year-review-most-satisfying-6016045.php) as "the embodiment of a nouveau riche New York woman of the era."

Televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker was plenty theatrical in real life, with her bold hair and makeup, vibrant personality, and glitzy TV show *The PTL Club*. Chastain embodied all that and more in the 2021 film *The Eyes of Tammy Faye*, which won the actress her first Academy Award. Fellow theatre veteran [Andrew Garfield](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-garfield) starred opposite Chastain as Jim Bakker.

Now that a new stage musical, titled *Tammy Faye* and composed by Elton John, has premiered in London, Tammy Faye Bakker certainly counts as theatre. Chastain wasn't involved with the world-premiere run, but you never know what future productions could hold.

## *A Doll's House*

After 10 years away from Broadway, Chastain makes her grand return in 2023. Continuing to build on her classical repertoire, she takes on Henrik Ibsen's *A Doll's House*, playing the "picture-perfect" but secretly unfulfilled housewife Nora Helmer determined to make a change.

This production, directed by Jamie Lloyd, was supposed to premiere in London in 2020, and it would have marked her West End debut. After multiple postponements, *A Doll's House* premieres on Broadway instead. So come visit the dollhouse through June 10 — who knows when Chastain, with such a busy career, will return to the New York stage next?

There's more time to hear the music of the night! *The Phantom of the Opera* has extended on Broadway for an additional eight weeks. Originally [set to close on February 18](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/the-phantom-of-the-opera-to-close-on-broadway-after-35-years), Broadway's longest-running show will now run at the [Majestic Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/majestic-theatre) through April 16.

*The Phantom of the Opera* centers on Christine, an ingenue at the Paris Opera House who finds herself caught in a love triangle between her childhood sweetheart Raoul and her music teacher, the mysterious and obsessive Phantom. The show contains famous showtunes like "Masquerade" and "All I Ask of You."

Andrew Lloyd Webber's *The Phantom of the Opera* has been on Broadway since 1988. At the time of closing, it will have just celebrated its 35th anniversary and played a record-setting 14,000 performances, more than any show in Broadway history. The musical is the winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Their name is Lancelot! Taran Killam and Alex Brightman join the cast of the upcoming [*Spamalot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33129-spamalot-tickets) Broadway revival, playing at the [St. James Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre) from October 31. Opening night is November 16.

Killam returns to Broadway after playing King George III in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2017. He is better known, however, for his onscreen comedy performances on *madTV* and *Saturday Night Live*, in addition to multiple sitcoms. He will play Lancelot through January 7 only.

Brightman will step into the role from January 9. He is currently starring as Richard Dreyfuss in [*The Shark Is Broken*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28737-the-shark-is-broken-tickets) on Broadway, and he is also known for leading the Broadway musical adaptations of *Beetlejuice* and *School of Rock*. Brightman also played Lancelot at the Kennedy Center, where this *Spamalot* revival production premiered earlier this year under director/choreographer Josh Rhodes.

As [previously announced](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/spamalot-sets-broadway-cast-and-creative-team), multiple other cast members from that production will also return for the Broadway transfer: Christopher Fitzgerald as Patsy, James Monroe Iglehart as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as The Lady of the Lake, Jimmy Smagula as Sir Bedevere, Michael Urie as Sir Robin, and Nik Walker as Sir Galahad. Ethan Slater also stars as The Historian/Prince Herbert.

*Spamalot* is the seven-time Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of *Monty Python and the Holy Grail*, written by John Du Prez and founding Monty Python member Eric Idle. The show is an irreverent sendup of Arthurian legends.

Ease on down to Broadway! A revival of [*The Wiz*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27115-the-wiz-tickets) will begin performances this spring at the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre). The first performance is March 29, and opening night is April 17.

The announcement of the New York production comes as *The Wiz* opened its pre-Broadway national tour in Baltimore, Maryland — where the Tony Award-winning original 1975 production premiered — last night.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black retelling of *The Wizard of Oz*, infusing it with jazz, pop, ballet, and Black cultural influences. The show features a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls and others, including Luther Vandross. The 2023 revival features additional material by Amber Ruffin, also represented on Broadway with *Some Like It Hot*.

Schele Williams directs the 2023 production, which features choreography by JaQuel Knight, scenic design by Hannah Beachler; costume design by Sharen Davis; lighting design by Ryan J. O’Gara; sound design by Jon Weston; projection design by Daniel Brodie; wig design by Charles LaPointe; makeup design by Kirk Cambridge-Del Pesche; music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert; vocal and music arrangements by Allen René Louis; and dance music arrangements by Adam Blackstone.

## 2005 and 2006: Broadway debuts

In January 2005, Rannells took over as high school student Fender in *Hairspray*. Like a ’60s beehive hairdo, the actor ascended high to the lead role of teenage heartthrob Link Larkin. Rannells has stepped into key roles in other Broadway shows including Bob Gaudio in *Jersey Boys*, the title role in *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, and King George in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets). 

A year later, in January 2006, the musical *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* introduced Gad to Broadway audiences. He took over the role of allergy-prone William Barfee, a kid who uses his “magic foot” to write out words before spelling them.

In 2011, Rannells and Gad landed the lead roles in the irreverent, sometimes profane musical by Robert Lopez (*Frozen, Avenue Q*) and *South Park* creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Rannells and Gad starred as Elders Price and Cunningham: Mormon missionaries in Uganda who are young, eager, in over their head, and making things up as they go along. ## 2006 and 2016: The William Finn connection

Gad belted the kicky tune “Magic Foot” by William Finn in his Broadway debut in *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*. Rannells earned his second Tony nomination – Best Actor in a Supporting Role, as the ailing Whizzer – in the 2016 revival of *Falsettos*, a show with music, lyrics, and a book by Finn.

## 2013 and 2016: The Disney connection

Beyond the stage, Disney is common ground for the pair. For episodes of the animated TV series *Sofia the First*, Rannells voiced Morris, a goblin. Meanwhile, Gad voiced Olaf, the fan-fave snowman in the *Frozen* film franchise.

## 2023: *Gutenberg! The Musical!*

As Bud and Doug in this musical by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the actors wear a lot of hats – and that’s not a metaphor. They play the authors of a show about Johannes Gutenberg, which they pitch to potential investors with the means to finance the project. They act out the show playing characters whose names are on baseball caps.

'Six' on Broadway to host SIXth of the Month Series

Beginning in October, audiences at performances of the Tony Award-winning musical on the sixth of each month will be treated to special events and giveaways.

Your chance to get tickets has rolled along! [*Merrily We Roll Along*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27417-merrily-we-roll-along-tickets) will offer a digital lottery for tickets to all Broadway performances, which begin September 19 at the [Hudson Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/hudson-theatre).

*Merrily We Roll Along* will offer [lottery tickets via TodayTix](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/27417-merrily-we-roll-along-on-broadway). Entrants must download the TodayTix app on iOS or Android, where the lottery will open for entries every Sunday for the following week's performances. The lottery will remain open until noon the day before each performance. Users can set an alert to be notified when the lottery opens each week, and sharing the lottery on social media earns extra entries.

Winners are drawn between 1 and 4 p.m. the day before the performance, and they will have 30 minutes after being notified by email or text to purchase their tickets on the app. 

Jonathan Groff, [Daniel Radcliffe](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/daniel-radcliffe), and Lindsay Mendez star in *Merrily We Roll Along*, the first Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's 1984 musical. Maria Friedman directs the production, which premiered off Broadway in 2022.

The show follows, in reverse, the disintegration of a 20-year friendship between three people in the showbiz industry. ## For the reunion we've all been waiting for: *Gutenberg! The Musical*

Alli Mauzey, of 2023 Best Musical Tony Award winner *Kimberly Akimbo*, "couldn’t tell you what [*Gutenberg! The Musical*] is about," but that [Andrew Rannells](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/andrew-rannells) and Josh Gad on stage together again thrills her enough to go.

And for those wondering, they now play hapless composers trying to pitch an inaccurate Broadway musical about Johannes Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press.

This new comedy about a reclusive hoarder cleaning up his life sees the reunion of a celebrated creative duo. Pulitzer-nominated writer Theresa Rebeck and Tony-nominated director Moritz Von Stuelpnagel join forces once more following 2018's *Bernhardt/Hamlet*. 

“I love Theresa Rebeck’s writing, and her and Moritz Von Stuelpnagel seem to have a great time working together, said Reg Rogers of *Merrily We Roll Along*.

## For something old that feels new: *Purlie Victorious*

*Purlie Victorious* premiered on Broadway in 1961, starring playwright Ossie Davis and his wife, Ruby Dee, as a preacher and his aide in a scheme to reclaim his inheritance from an oppressive white landowner. But it hasn't been on Broadway since, so this revival — led by Tony winner Leslie Odom, Jr. and Tony nominee Kara Young — is all but new for many audiences today. “With so many heavy hitters, it is a must-see for me,” said [*Hadestown*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/14748-hadestown-tickets)'s Brit West.

"They are making history with this first ever revival of this play, and I cannot wait to see it!" said Sierra Boggess of *Harmony*. Echoed her co-star Chip Zien, "A great cast lead by the thrilling Leslie Odom, Jr. marking his return to Broadway. With the great [director] Kenny Leon at the helm, this is a 'comedy' that couldn't be timelier and a theatrical event not to be missed."

Lakisha May of *Jaja's African Hair Braiding* has plenty of love for this show already. “I saw a production at Spelman College when I was a student there," she said. ## For a blast from the past: *Back to the Future* and *Merrily We Roll Along*

Two shows on Broadway are taking audiences back in time this fall. The stage adaptation of *Back to the Future*, which opened in August, zips to 1985 and 1955 at 88 miles per hour. According to *Wicked*'s William Youmans, the man who makes it all happen — scientist Doc Brown, played by Roger Bart — is reason enough to go: "Roger Bart is one of the funniest actors alive."

A few blocks away, the first Broadway revival of *Merrily We Roll Along* tells the story of a crumbling 20-year friendship in reverse. Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, and Lindsay Mendez play the doomed trio of pals Frank, Charley, and Mary.

"I have a special affection for *Merrily We Roll Along*," said Amelia Cormack of *Hadestown*. "It was our last show at drama school, and I got to play Mary, so it’s a definite nostalgia moment. Plus, this cast is incredible.”

## For an unexpected wave of emotion: *The Shark Is Broken*

This *Jaws*-inspired play, on through November 16, delivers great-white-sized laughs as it dramatizes the famous feud between Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider on set. What struck *Back to the Future* star Hugh Coles, though, was how moving it is: [Ian Shaw](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/interviews/ian-shaw-sinks-his-teeth-into-his-fathers-legacy-in-the-shark-is-broken) co-wrote and stars in *The Shark Is Broken* in his father's memory.

"I had the privilege of watching *The Shark is Broken* in London," Coles said. "You’d think the best speech in the show would be about the U.S.S. Indianapolis — but there’s a beautifully written, moving and powerfully delivered monologue about Shaw’s father that blows it out of the water (pun intended)."

Jocelyn Bioh is known for her lighthearted, widely appealing comedies that shed light on the experiences of Black women in Africa and America. Her latest work, *Jaja’s African Hair Braiding*, tells a story of love, community, and gentrification by way of a group of women in the title Harlem salon.

## For a royally good laugh: *Spamalot*

This musical based on *Monty Python and the Holy Grail* hasn't held court on Broadway since winning the Best Musical Tony Award in 2005. Broadway stars with fond memories of the movie, the Broadway premiere, or their former co-stars now headlining the revival are now planning to take their seats at the round table.

“I am most excited to see my dear, dear friends (and former co-workers at *Hamilton*), James Monroe Iglehart and Nik Walker, in *Spamalot*," said *Merrily We Roll Along*'s Krystal Joy Brown. "I cannot wait to get to enjoy them in all of their hilarious glory! Also, I grew up on *Monty Python*, so it’s a bit nostalgic, and who doesn’t want a good laugh and a good time at the theatre?”

Julie Benko, of *Harmony* added: "I remember bringing my sister to the original production back when I was in high school, and now, I can't wait to bring my husband. I suspect he's going to laugh so hard he pees himself and will then spend the following six months demanding shrubberies around the house."

## For the next generation of Broadway: *How to Dance in Ohio*

This new musical, based on the Peabody Award-winning documentary about autistic young adults coming of age, is bringing many new faces to the world of Broadway. Director Sammi Cannold, writers Rebekah Greer Melocik and Jacob Yandura, choreographer Mayte Natalio, and all seven autistic lead actors make their debuts with this show.

“I'm excited to see a brand-new musical on Broadway, and I look forward to seeing how the team has adapted this beautiful story about human connection from the documentary to a musical," said Liana Hunt of *Back to the Future*. ## For a timely, touching drama: *Prayer for the French Republic*

Joshua Harmon's epic drama, about multiple generations of a French Jewish family facing similar doubts about assimilation and safety, received near-universal acclaim for its 2021 Off-Broadway premiere. It's perhaps more poignant and relevant now, as the show prepares to begin Broadway performances in December.

"I saw it in its Off-Broadway run and was blown away by the writing, direction, the performances - everything," Benko said. "It's a complex look at contemporary Jewish life and we need those plays on Broadway now more than ever."

## For Off-Broadway fun with bite: *Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors*

Cast members from this fall's hottest new shows and long-running hits share which new Broadway musicals and plays they're looking forward to this season.

Rush to her window! [*Melissa Etheridge: My Window*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25987-melissa-etheridge-my-window-tickets), a Broadway solo show from the award-winning musician, will offer rush tickets to all performances, which begin tonight, September 14, at the [Circle in the Square Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/circle-in-the-square-theatre).

Rush tickets are available for $47.50 the morning of each performance [on the TodayTix app](https://www.todaytix.com/nyc/shows/25987-melissa-etheridge--my-window-on-broadway), beginning at 9 a.m. Users can download the TodayTix app on an iOS or Android device and purchase up to two tickets  for that afternoon or evening's show.

The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter's theatrical solo concert is playing on Broadway for two months only at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Wait for it. Ever since Leslie Odom, Jr. wrapped his award-winning and career-boosting star turn in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2016, we’ve been cooling our heels in anticipation of his Broadway return. 

Seven years later, he’s back – and not in a musical. Odom shoulders the title role in the first Broadway revival of Ossie Davis’s 1961 play, [*Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27642-purlie-victorious-tickets). Odom plays a traveling preacher on a mission in smalltown Georgia.

Odom has been busy while he’s been off stage. He stars opposite Ellen Burstein in horror sequel *The Exorcist: Believer*, opening October 3. Last year, he was part of the starry ensemble of the thriller *Glass Onion*. But his roots as a theatre star remain strong.

Seasons of love can bring Broadway firsts. In 1998, at 17 years old, Odom made his debut as a replacement in Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer-winning rock musical. He covered multiple roles, including a cop and Paul, who shines in “Life Support,” a reminder that there’s “no day but today.”

As if a theatre fan needs a recap: The 2012 NBC series covered the ups, downs, and sideways of creating a Marilyn Monroe musical. Odom played Sam, an ensemble member who is friends with Ivy ([Megan Hilty](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/megan-hilty-jennifer-simard-to-lead-death-becomes-her-musical-in-chicago), a contender for the star part), and dates the composer, Tom ([Christian Borle](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/christian-borle), now in [*Some Like It Hot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24262-some-like-it-hot-tickets)).

## *Leap of Faith*

Based on the 1992 Steve Martin movie, the 2012 Broadway musical adaptation starred Raúl Esparza as a con man faking it as a holy roller. Odom, reprising his role from a 2010 Los Angeles run, played the upright Isaiah Sturdevant. The show’s reviews were mixed, but one critic called out Odom as “fantastic.”

Based loosely on the Shakespeare classic *Othello*, the hip-hop-flavored musical by Matt Sax and Eric Rosen is set in a war-torn, not-so-distant future, where broken ties between two brothers parallel the relationship between Othello and Iago. Odom played Markos, a warmongering commander. The Public Theater presentation ran in 2013.

In 2014, Odom starred alongside Lin-Minuel Miranda and [Karen Olivo](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/karen-olivo) in *Rent* creator Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical about a struggling songwriter, Jon, who’s questioning his future. In the weeklong run with the Encores! Off-Center series of rarely revived musicals, Odom played the artist’s best friend.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2015 landmark musical about Alexander Hamilton cast a brilliant spotlight on Odom, who confidently stepped into it and slayed as Aaron Burr, “the damn fool that shot” and killed the “$10 Founding Father.” He won a Tony and a Grammy and left indelible musical marks with “Wait for It,” “The Room Where It Happens,” and “Dear Theodosia.”

## *One Night in Miami...*

Odom earned an Oscar nomination for his portrait of Sam Cooke in this 2020 film directed by Regina King. Author Kemp Powers based the movie script on his 2013 play of the same name that imagines what went down at an actual February 1964 meeting of four African American icons: Cooke, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Jim Brown. Odom’s role included performing “A Change Is Gonna Come,” a song that would emerge as a civil rights anthem.

Odom plays Purlie, who returns to his hometown in the south with hopes of integrating a church. It won’t be easy. The Tony and Grammy Award-winning *Hamilton* star has a long career on and off Broadway, and he now returns to the stage to lead *Purlie Victorious*.

A new revival of *Uncle Vanya* will premiere on Broadway this spring, in a new translation by Heidi Schreck. Lila Neugebauer will direct the Lincoln Center Theater production, which begins performances at the [Vivian Beaumont Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/vivian-beaumont-theater) on April 2 ahead of an April 24 opening.

The classic play by Anton Chekhov follows the title character and his niece, whose lives are upended when Sonya's father and his wife move in. Past resentments, troubled romances, and family tensions erupt on a once-calm family farm.

*Uncle Vanya*, which premiered in 1899 and has received 10 prior Broadway productions, remains one of Chekhov's best-known and most beloved works. This new version is by Heidi Schreck, best known for her Pulitzer- and Tony-nominated work *What the Constitution Means to Me*.

Director Lila Neugebauer has two productions on Broadway this season: before *Uncle Vanya*, she directs Brandon Jacobs-Jenkins's [*Appropriate*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/31352-appropriate-tickets), starring [Sarah Paulson](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/stars-on-stage/sarah-paulson), in the fall season. She is also known for directing *The Waverly Gallery* on Broadway, *The Wolves* off Broadway, and the film *Causeway* starring Jennifer Lawrence.

The *Uncle Vanya* creative team also includes set designer Mimi Lien, costume designer Kaye Voyce, lighting designer Lap Chi Chu, and sound designers Mikhail Fiksel and Beth Lake.

Casting has yet to be announced.
