It's got a little mo' time. [*Ain't No Mo'*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25907-aint-no-mo-tickets) will extend its Broadway by one week. Originally set to close on December 18, the show will now run through December 23 at the [Belasco Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/belasco-theatre).

The extension follows the viral spread of the #SaveAintNoMo campaign, launched online by the show's playwright and star, Jordan E. Cooper. He wrote an open letter calling for support for work, like *Ain't No Mo'*, by artists of color on Broadway.

Celebrities including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade, Queen Latifah, Tyler Perry, Shonda Rhimes, and Sara Ramirez all bought out performances of *Ain't No Mo'* this week in support of the campaign.

Reverend Al Sharpton, Swizz Beatz, D-Nice, Derrick Hayes & Pinky Cole, Jeremy O. Harris, Denee Benton, Debbie Allen, and Dominique Morrisseau also contributed to the cause.

*Ain't No Mo'* made history by making 27-year-old Cooper the youngest Black American playwright ever on Broadway. His satirical play, which first premiered to acclaim at The Public Theater, questions what would happen if the U.S. government offered all Black Americans a one-way trip to Africa to solve racism.

A series of sketches show why the characters do, or don't, board the plane, exploring what it's like to be Black in today's America.

Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's *Sweeney Todd* centers on Todd, a barber, and Lovett, a meat pie shop owner, who team up on a murderous revenge plot in London. This revival, the third since the musical's Tony-winning 1979 premiere, will feature Jonathan Tunick's full 26-piece orchestrations of Sondheim's classic score.

## Who wrote *Shucked*?

*Shucked* features a book by Robert Horn. In 2019, he was nominated for, and won, his first Tony Award for writing the book for the *Tootsie* Broadway musical. He also wrote the book for the musical *13* as well as its film adaptation, as well as Disney Channel movies including *Teen Beach Movie*, *Teen Beach Movie 2*, and *Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure*.

Nashville-based songwriting duo Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark are the composer/lyricists of *Shucked* on Broadway. McAnally and Clark have penned country songs for artists like Kacey Musgraves, Reba McEntire, Sheryl Crow, Miranda Lambert, The Band Perry, and more.

Learn more about the corny new musical cropping up in New York this spring.

Initial information about the 2023 Tony Awards has been announced. For the first time in the awards' history, the ceremony will take place at the historic United Palace theatre in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood.

The 3,400-seat theatre — which presents events like concerts, film premieres, and a movie screening series hosted by Lin-Manuel Miranda — is Manhattan's fourth largest performance venue. For seven of the last 10 years, the Tonys have taken place at [Radio City Music Hall](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/radio-city-music-hall).

This season's ceremony is set for June 11, with nominations being announced on May 2. The cutoff date for Tonys eligibility is April 27; all Broadway shows being considered for awards must open on or before that date.

The 2023 Tony Awards ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS and stream live on Paramount+. Exact timing for the broadcast has yet to be announced.

The play's the thing — again! Less than a year after James Ijames's [*Fat Ham*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27141-fat-ham-tickets) debuted (and repeatedly extended) at [The Public Theater](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/public-theater) and won the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, audiences will get to feast on this show once more when it makes its Broadway debut at the [American Airlines Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/american-airlines-theatre) in March 2023.

*Fat Ham* is an adaptation of Shakespeare's *Hamlet*, this time featuring a queer college student named Juicy and much more barbecued pork. A [four-star review of the show on New York Theatre Guide](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/fat-ham-off-broadway-review) reads: "This slice of life leans hard into comedy, not tragedy, as it ponders big things that matter: personal identity, sexuality, transparency, living out loud." 

The bones of the classic play remain the same, though. A young man's uncle kills his (Hamlet/Juicy's) father, who then appears as a ghost and insists his son get revenge. *Fat Ham* incorporates many details from *Hamlet*, but Ijames also gives the story his own spice and sends many of Shakespeare's ideas up in smoke.

## Different: *Fat Ham* has a different setting than *Hamlet*.

We're far from a castle in Denmark now. *Hamlet* takes place in the Danish royal court, but *Fat Ham* couldn't be further from that setting in time and space. Ijames's adaptation is set in the present day, in a backyard in the American South.

All the action of *Fat Ham* takes place in real time at a barbecue there, which doubles as Juicy's mom and uncle's wedding reception. In contrast, *Hamlet* is set in multiple locations throughout his castle, over the course of a few days.

## Similar: *Fat Ham* characters are loosely named after *Hamlet* characters.

"Juicy", surely, does not sound like "Hamlet", but three supporting characters more clearly reference their *Hamlet* counterparts. The Horatio character's name is shortened to Tio, Laertes becomes Larry, and Ophelia becomes Opal.

Every *Fat Ham* character, though, has a *Hamlet* equivalent. In addition to Juicy as Hamlet, his mother, Tedra, stands in for Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. Juicy's uncle Rev is Claudius, and Opal and Laertes's mom, Rabby, is Polonius (Ophelia and Laertes's father in *Hamlet*).

One other *Hamlet* name gets a mention in *Fat Ham*: Yorick. In Shakespeare's play, he's a dead court jester, and Hamlet delivers a monologue to his exhumed skull. In *Fat Ham*, he's Juicy and Tio's dead classmate; Tio buys Yorick's shoes at a fundraiser for his funeral.

In both plays, Yorick's death reminds the characters they're all destined for the same fate. The key difference is that discovering Yorick's death makes Hamlet want to speed up the process, but it makes Juicy more certain he doesn't want anyone to die prematurely.

## Different: *Hamlet* is a tragedy, but *Fat Ham* is a comedy.

*Hamlet* isn't just a tragedy — it's perhaps Shakespeare's most famous tragedy alongside *Macbeth*. Most of its characters die by the end, and Hamlet spends most of his time alive thinking about death. It's deep, but bleak, stuff.

So for those who want the intrigue of *Hamlet* without all the sadness, *Fat Ham* is it. There are poignant and thoughtful moments, but there's mostly near-constant humor. Family members roast each other. They sing and dance without care. One shares wacky thoughts while high. And as for the ending? That we can't spoil.

## Similar: Some lines from *Hamlet* are said verbatim in *Fat Ham*.

Juicy freely quotes the Bard to his family members (much to their confusion) and the audience. Some of these lines, though, appear in different contexts. Take this famous line from Hamlet's "To be or not to be" speech: "Ah, there's the rub!" Hamlet is talking about his reservations about dying. But in *Fat Ham*, Juicy says it while Rev waxes poetic about how a delicious rub is the key to good barbecue. Juicy punnily tells the audience, "Ah, there's the rub."

Juicy does deliver other *Hamlet* monologues in full, like the one that begins "What a piece of work is a man!" and another that begins, "I have heard that guilty creatures sitting at a play have... been struck so to the soul that presently they have proclaimed their malefactions."

Translation: If someone did something awful, and they watch a play in which a character does a similar awful thing, the play might inspire them to confess. Speaking of which...

## Similar: Both shows include some kind of play-within-a-play.

The play's the thing in both *Fat Ham* and *Hamlet*. In *Hamlet*, a theatre troupe happens to visit the castle, and Hamlet has them reenact his father's murder in the hopes of spooking Claudius into a confession.

The *Fat Ham* family are plenty theatrical themselves, busting out the karaoke machine to get the party started. It's a game of charades, though, where Juicy himself acts out the truth about his uncle.

## Different: *Fat Ham* explores sexuality and masculinity through a modern-day lens.

One of the most striking and important differences between *Hamlet* and *Fat Ham* is the personality of its main character. *Hamlet* is a moody, death-obsessed prince who's immediately down to kill his uncle when asked. Juicy is also moody and death-obsessed, but for different reasons. He is all too aware of the stereotypes surrounding Black men and violence, and of the high death rate of Black Americans. Plus, his father and uncle are violent men. Juicy doesn't want to fall into the same trap.

Whether death is the answer to one's problems isn't the main question of *Fat Ham* like it is in *Hamlet*. In *Fat Ham*, the question is what kind of man Juicy wants to be, and whether his father's revenge plot fits into that. As a queer man, he's interested in cultivating his "softness," something his macho dad and uncle discourage.

And that leads to the biggest difference of all between Shakespeare and Ijames's works. If the Hamlet character doesn't kill his uncle, what's the alternative? To find out or not to find out, that is the question — so to find out, get *Fat Ham* Broadway tickets.

Its Broadway run will be no mo'. The new play [*Ain't No Mo'*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/25907-aint-no-mo-tickets), by Jordan E. Cooper, will close at the [Belasco Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/belasco-theatre) on December 18 after 43 total performances.

This comedy takes place ahead of a fictional flight carrying millions of willing Black Americans on a one-way trip to Africa. A series of satirical vignettes illustrates why people choose to go — or not — in order to examine racism and the Black experience in America.

With *Ain't No Mo'*, Cooper becomes the youngest Black American playwright in Broadway history. The show's lead producer, Lee Daniels, said in a statement, "When I first saw *Ain’t No Mo’*, it shook me to my core. I know firsthand how this world - and industry - doesn’t always embrace our stories and I vowed to do everything I could to bring Jordan’s riveting play written in his distinct voice and perspective to Broadway. It was my intention to make history with this play. I’m proud to say we did."

*Ain't No Mo'* first played in New York in 2019 off Broadway at The Public Theater, receiving critical acclaim. The Broadway production also earned positive reviews, with [New York Theatre Guide's reading](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/reviews/aint-no-mo-broadway-review), "This play is fanged, ferocious, and funny as all get out."

The Broadway cast includes Cooper as Peaches and Marchant Davis, Fedna Jacquet, Crystal Lucas-Perry, Ebony Marshall-Oliver, and Shannon Matesky as passengers.

'Ain't No Mo'" sets Broadway closing date

Outside theatre circles, where he's best known as "dear, bewildered, and awkward Pierre" from *Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812*, three-time Grammy nominee Josh Groban is best known as the angelic voice behind a popular "You Raise Me Up" cover and *The Polar Express*'s "Believe." But even those credits alone show that, in his 20-plus-year career, he's amassed a diverse resume in both singing and acting.

He got his start as a singer in the early aughts, but especially since the 2010s, Groban has taken more and more steps into the theatre world. He studied acting even before singing, making him a natural fit for musical theatre. Groban has participated in plenty of theatre-adjacent projects, the latest being NBC's *Beauty and the Beast Live!* on December 15. He also has his second Broadway outing lined up: the latest revival of [*Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/sweeney-todd-the-demon-barber-of-fleet-street) in February 2023.

## *Chess*

It's a musical so nice, Groban sang it twice. A 2003 concert production of *Chess* — meaning that there were minimal sets, costumes, and movement around the stage — marked Groban's first major theatre gig. In this show about a Russian and American chess player competing, he played "The Russian" Anatoly Sergievsky alongside a slew of Broadway stars: Adam Pascal, Norm Lewis, Sutton Foster, Julia Murney, and Raúl Esparza. In hindsight, his casting foreshadowed his eventual Broadway debut as another Russian lead!

In 2008, London's Royal Albert Hall hosted a similar production, *Chess in Concert*, and Groban and Pascal reprised their roles alongside an otherwise new cast. Idina Menzel also starred, and she and Groban went on to perform together twice more: for PBS's Soundstage series and on Groban's 2018 Bridges tour.

## *Glee*

Groban made two appearances on this theatre-centric TV show about a high school glee club. He guest stars as himself in two episodes of Season 1, beginning with "Acafellas." In that episode, he shows up to one of the high school's a cappella concerts, but only to deliver a restraining order against former glee club supervisor Sandy Ryerson and confirm he is not, in fact, in search of an opening act.

The episode "Journey" sees Groban as a celebrity guest judge at a regional singing competition alongside fictional news anchor Rod Remington (Bill A. Jones), theatre-hating cheer coach Sue Sylvester (real-life Broadway veteran Jane Lynch), and Olivia Newton-John, playing a mean version of herself.

## *Never Mind the Buzzcocks*

*Never Mind the Buzzcocks* is a British quiz show that aired on BBC Two for nearly 20 years. The show mostly featured questions about pop music, but some theatre music made it in there, too. In 2010, Groban guest hosted an episode, which he ended by singing "I Dreamed a Dream" from *Les Misérables* with Michael Ball.

## *Stages*

Groban truly affirmed his love for theatre in 2015 by releasing *Stages*, an album of Broadway showtune covers. He sang classic theatre hits like "What I Did for Love" from *A Chorus Line*, "Bring Him Home" from *Les Misérables*, "Finishing the Hat" from *Sunday in the Park with George*, and, honoring his history with *Chess*, "Anthem." The album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, and the live version, *Stages Live*, got a nomination in the same category the next year.

One of the other songs on the album was a mashup of two Sondheim tunes: "Children Will Listen" from [*Into the Woods*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/into-the-woods) and "Not While I'm Around" from *Sweeney Todd*. Long before the 2023 revival, he showed he had what it takes to play Todd.

## *Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812*

After amassing all these theatre-related credits, Groban finally made his Broadway debut in 2016 in *Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812*, a musical adaptation of Part 8 of *War and Peace*. His performance as Pierre, an unhappily married man looking for purpose in life, earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical, a Drama League Award nomination for Distinguished Performance, and a Theatre World Award.

In this production, the orchestra was scattered among the actors, who performed all around them. At a few moments in the show, Groban would go over to one of those musicians and play a few notes on the piano or the accordion. He's a musician through and through.

## The 72nd Tony Awards

Groban may have lost the Tony to [Ben Platt](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/ben-platt) in 2017, but to make up for it, he co-hosted the following year's Tony ceremony with [Sara Bareilles](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/actor-profile/sara-bareilles). The two, along with Shaina Taub, penned a cheeky opening number called "This One's For You" about how they've never won any major awards, but like lots of popular shows who lost Best Musical, they're successful anyway. "Take it from two singing tuxedos / Smile tonight, no matter how it goes / Remember the shows who've proven a lack of top honor / Won't make you a goner / It might even make you a host!" they sang.

That song, and the pair's hosting, earned Groban two Emmy nominations: for Outstanding Music and Lyrics and Outstanding Live Variety Special. Since that performance, Bareilles has gotten a Grammy, but Groban has yet to snag an award. Maybe this will be his year!

## *Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street*

With all these theatre credits, it's hard to believe *Sweeney Todd* is only Groban's second Broadway show. The title role of this show couldn't be a further cry from Pierre: Both are outsiders in their societies, but whereas Pierre is awkward and shy, Sweeney Todd is strong, vengeful, and violent. In the *Sweeney Todd* musical, he and meat pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett (played by Annaleigh Ashford in this revival) team up on a murder spree — first targeting two people, and soon the entire city of London.

Sondheim's musical thriller is sure to show the extent of Groban's range, and he'll serve up a deliciously dark performance when *Sweeney Todd* sets up shop on Broadway in February.

Farewell, so long, goodbye. Will Swenson will play his final performance in [*A Beautiful Noise, The Neil Diamond Musical*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24254-a-beautiful-noise-tickets) on Broadway on October 29.

Swenson currently leads the show at the [Broadhurst Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/broadhurst-theatre) as Neil Diamond - Then, a younger version of the singer-songwriter as an up-and-coming musician. The show follows Diamond as he looks back on his life and career, and his [greatest hits](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/all-the-songs-in-a-beautiful-noise-on-broadway) propel the story of how he went from a poor Brooklyn kid to an award-winning, globally bestselling musician.

Swenson has played Diamond since *A Beautiful Noise* opened in November 2022. The current cast, most of whom are also original members, also includes Mark Jacoby as Neil Diamond – Now, Robyn Hurder as Marcia, Shirine Babb as Doctor, Jessie Fisher as Jaye Posner, Michael McCormick as Fred Weintraub/ Tommy O’Rourke, Tom Alan Robbins as Bert Berns/Kieve Diamond, and Bri Sudia as Ellie Greenwich/Rose Diamond.

Replacement casting for Swenson has yet to be announced. Nick Fradiani currently serves as Swenson's alternate, playing Neil Diamond - Then for one performance a week; he will continue in this role.

The actor originated the role of a young Neil Diamond in this musical at the Broadhurst Theatre about the Grammy Award-winning musician's life and career.

The heat is going away. [*Some Like It Hot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/24262-some-like-it-hot-tickets) has set a Broadway closing date of December 30 at the [Shubert Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/shubert-theatre).

The musical will have played for just over a year, having played 483 total performances since November 1, 2022.

*Some Like It Hot* is a musical adapted from the 1959 Billy Wilder comedy of the same name, in which two Prohibition-era jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, flee the Chicago mob. While stowing away in disguise with an all-female swing band, they find love and learn more about their truest identities.

Matthew López and Amber Ruffin wrote the book, and songs are by Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics). Casey Nicholaw directs and choreographs.

The musical adaptation of the 1959 Billy Wilder film at the Shubert Theatre. was the most Tony Award-nominated show of the 2022-23 season with 13 nods.

Sometimes the dividing line between a character and a playwright is a blurry one. So it is with Ossie Davis’s 1961 satirical comedy [*Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27642-purlie-victorious-tickets), now back on Broadway for the first time since its debut 62 years ago.

The story follows Purlie Victorious Judson, a Black self-made traveling preacher who returns to his segregated Georgia hometown with a mission to buy and rehab its derelict church, Big Bethel. As a Black man, that’s a tall order. The church, like the town, is in the grip of racist tyrant Ol’ Cap’n Cotchipee.

Davis grew up in racially segregated Georgia. Like Purlie, Davis had first-hand experience with discrimination and bigotry, forces that inform the play and fueled his lifelong commitment to civil rights. In a pre-show voiceover, director Kenny Leon notes that the play began as an angry drama. But it evolved to become less autobiographical and funnier. Get people laughing, you get people’s attention. That’s powerful.

## The politics of *Purlie Victorious*

Davis situated his play in Georgia in the late 1950s, a time when Jim Crow – which has been called “a racial caste system” – were in effect in the American South. Bottom line: Blacks were second-class citizens.

“Jim Crow was more than a series of rigid anti-black laws. It was a way of life,” according to the [Jim Crow Museum](https://jimcrowmuseum.ferris.edu/), a resource to tell the story of African American resiliency. Jim Crow bolstered the lie that Blacks were inferior to whites. 

Davis shrewdly creates Ol' Cap'n Cotchipee to be the flesh-and-blood manifestation of Jim Crow, a man dressed head to toe in white who won’t hesitate to say he reveres “all that is white and holy” – and that doesn’t include African Americans. He sums the philosophy up in a chilling line: "My ol' Confederate father told me on his deathbed: Feed the Negras first - after the horses and cattle."

Cotchipee is quick to reach for his bullwhip, but he takes a shine to Purlie’s brother Gitlow (that name is no accident), an “Uncle Tom” who’s content being subservient and keeping to the old-plantation-day ways. 

But Davis leaves room for hope. Cotchipee’s liberal-minded son Charlie has had it with his father’s bigoted ways – and that ultimately leads the way for Purlie to get the last laugh.

## The real-life partnership of *Purlie Victorious*

Purlie’s plan to take ownership of Big Bethel requires a secret weapon – Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins, a follower and love interest of Purlie's who’s game for anything. Ossie Davis played the title role in the comedy’s Broadway premiere, so naturally, his wife, Ruby Dee, played Lutiebelle. 

The couple, who were married for 57 years, previously shared a Broadway stage in 1946 in *Jeb* and 1959 in *A Raisin in the Sun*. *Purlie Victorious* gave them a chance to chomp into two juicy roles together onstage. And their involvement in the show didn't end with the original production: Dee later played the supporting role of Idella in a 2002 reading.

They frequently worked together throughout their careers until he died in 2005 at 87; she died in 2014 at 91. But *Purlie Victorious* gave them a unique chance to shine a bright spotlight on the struggle for equality.

## Famous *Purlie Victorious* reviews

Suffice it to say that the social influencers of 1961 took notice of what Purlie Victorious was preaching. Fellow reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. saw the show. So did Malcolm X. According to Davis, [X said](http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ccbh/mxp/davis.html), “Black folks laughing at White folks was revolutionary — the highest kind of struggle he could imagine.” 

Eleanor Roosevelt also attended. She laughed, and then she [wrote about the experience](https://www2.gwu.edu/~erpapers/myday/displaydoc.cfm?_y=1962&_f=md005050). “Mixed with the humor there is intelligent, incisive commentary on segregation, discrimination, and the slow pace of integration,” she wrote.

“I think it is well for you as an American citizen to see it,” she added, “and ponder our racial problem… as a question affecting our standing and our real sincerity among the peoples of the world.”

## Trapeze class

One of the most jaw-dropping moments in *Wicked* is when Elphaba takes flight. If you want to get a taste of what it feels like to soar through the air, you can take a flying trapeze class. The Trapeze School of New York at Hudson River Park, for example, teaches you how to hang by your knees, fly through the air, and do a “catch” (when someone on another trapeze bar catches you) all in your first class.

You can also try other gravity-defying activities, like trampoline classes and aerial hoop classes (also known as Lyra). It’s certainly a thrilling way to prepare for *Wicked*!

During the 1920s and 1930s, the Comedian Harmonists, a German sextet known for their freewheeling stage frolics and tight harmonies, ascended to popularity that spanned the globe. ### *I Can Get It for You Wholesale*

Antihero, anyone? *Tootsie* Tony winner Santino Fontana stars as Harry Bogen, an eager-beaver shipping clerk in 1937 New York City whose ambition is rivaled only by his unscrupulousness. This [Classic Stage Company](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/classic-stage-company) production marks the first revival of the 1962 musical in 30 years and is a bit of a family affair. Revisions to Jerome Weidman’s original book, based on his novel, are by his son, John Weidman. Songs are by Harold Rome.

*How to Dance in Ohio* is a musical adaptation of the same-named documentary by Alexandra Shiva. The show follows a group of autistic young adults who come of age and experience newfound love, stress, confidence, and change as they prepare for a formal dance at their group counseling center.

The show comes to Broadway's [Belasco Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/belasco-theatre) after a 2022 world premiere in Syracuse, with multiple cast members returning.

## Who is in the *How to Dance in Ohio* Broadway cast?

Newly announced *How to Dance in Ohio* cast members include Caesar Samayoa as psychologist Dr. Emilio Amigo, Cristina Sastre as Ashley Amigo, and ensemble members Jean Christian Barry, Collin Hancock, Hunter Hollingsworth, Marina Jansen, Ayanna Thomas, and Marina Pires.

They join seven [previously announced cast members](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatre-news/news/new-musical-how-to-dance-in-ohio-to-premiere-on-broadway-this-fall) making their Broadway debuts: Desmond Luis Edwards as Remy, Amelia Fei (Yi-Hsuan Fei) as Caroline, Madison Kopec as Marideth, Liam Pearce as Drew, Imani Russell as Mel, Conor Tague as Tommy, and Ashley Wool as Jessica. All are autistic actors reprising their roles from Syracuse as the autistic adults in the show.

How to Dance in Ohio on Broadway

The new musical, based on Alexandra Shiva's Peabody Award-winning documentary about autistic adults, begins performances at the Belasco Theatre in November.

Their name is Lancelot! Taran Killam and Alex Brightman join the cast of the upcoming [*Spamalot*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/33129-spamalot-tickets) Broadway revival, playing at the [St. James Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/st-james-theatre) from October 31. Opening night is November 16.

Killam returns to Broadway after playing King George III in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets) in 2017. He is better known, however, for his onscreen comedy performances on *madTV* and *Saturday Night Live*, in addition to multiple sitcoms. He will play Lancelot through January 7 only.

Brightman will step into the role from January 9. He is currently starring as Richard Dreyfuss in [*The Shark Is Broken*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/28737-the-shark-is-broken-tickets) on Broadway, and he is also known for leading the Broadway musical adaptations of *Beetlejuice* and *School of Rock*. Brightman also played Lancelot at the Kennedy Center, where this *Spamalot* revival production premiered earlier this year under director/choreographer Josh Rhodes.

Ease on down to Broadway! A revival of [*The Wiz*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/27115-the-wiz-tickets) will begin performances this spring at the [Marquis Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/marquis-theatre). The first performance is March 29, and opening night is April 17.

The announcement of the New York production comes as *The Wiz* opened its pre-Broadway national tour in Baltimore, Maryland — where the Tony Award-winning original 1975 production premiered — last night.

*The Wiz* is an all-Black retelling of *The Wizard of Oz*, infusing it with jazz, pop, ballet, and Black cultural influences. The show features a book by William F. Brown and a Tony Award-winning score by Charlie Smalls and others, including Luther Vandross. The 2023 revival features additional material by Amber Ruffin, also represented on Broadway with *Some Like It Hot*.

Schele Williams directs the 2023 production, which features choreography by JaQuel Knight, scenic design by Hannah Beachler; costume design by Sharen Davis; lighting design by Ryan J. O’Gara; sound design by Jon Weston; projection design by Daniel Brodie; wig design by Charles LaPointe; makeup design by Kirk Cambridge-Del Pesche; music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements by Joseph Joubert; vocal and music arrangements by Allen René Louis; and dance music arrangements by Adam Blackstone.

The comic duo play musical theatre composers writing a show about the inventor of the printing press.

Out there? Sure. Then again, the story of misbegotten Mormon missionaries in Uganda is also wacky. That’s what the long-running, Tony Award-winning musical [*The Book of Mormon*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/127-the-book-of-mormon-tickets), in which Gad and Rannells first performed together, is about.

## 2005 and 2006: Broadway debuts

In January 2005, Rannells took over as high school student Fender in *Hairspray*. Like a ’60s beehive hairdo, the actor ascended high to the lead role of teenage heartthrob Link Larkin. Rannells has stepped into key roles in other Broadway shows including Bob Gaudio in *Jersey Boys*, the title role in *Hedwig and the Angry Inch*, and King George in [*Hamilton*](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/show/384-hamilton-tickets). 

A year later, in January 2006, the musical *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee* introduced Gad to Broadway audiences. He took over the role of allergy-prone William Barfee, a kid who uses his “magic foot” to write out words before spelling them.

## 2011: *The Book of Mormon*

In 2011, Rannells and Gad landed the lead roles in the irreverent, sometimes profane musical by Robert Lopez (*Frozen, Avenue Q*) and *South Park* creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Rannells and Gad starred as Elders Price and Cunningham: Mormon missionaries in Uganda who are young, eager, in over their head, and making things up as they go along. Both got Best Actor Tony nominations for the still-running hit at the [Eugene O’Neill Theatre](https://www.newyorktheatreguide.com/theatres/eugene-o-neill-theatre).

## 2006 and 2016: The William Finn connection

Gad belted the kicky tune “Magic Foot” by William Finn in his Broadway debut in *The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee*. Rannells earned his second Tony nomination – Best Actor in a Supporting Role, as the ailing Whizzer – in the 2016 revival of *Falsettos*, a show with music, lyrics, and a book by Finn.

## 2013 and 2016: The Disney connection

Beyond the stage, Disney is common ground for the pair. For episodes of the animated TV series *Sofia the First*, Rannells voiced Morris, a goblin. Meanwhile, Gad voiced Olaf, the fan-fave snowman in the *Frozen* film franchise.

## 2023: *Gutenberg! The Musical!*

As Bud and Doug in this musical by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the actors wear a lot of hats – and that’s not a metaphor. They play the authors of a show about Johannes Gutenberg, which they pitch to potential investors with the means to finance the project. They act out the show playing characters whose names are on baseball caps.
