Telly Leung was born on January 3, 1980 in New York City and grew up in Brooklyn. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in 1998 and went on to study at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama.

After a string of performances at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and The Muny in St. Louis, Leung finally made his Broadway debut in the 2002 revival of Flower Drum Song. His next Broadway production was the 2004 revival of Sondheim's Pacific Overtures. After originating the role of Boq in the Chicago production of Wicked in 2005, he return to Broadway and joined the cast of Rent at the Nederlander Theatre from November 2006 and appears on the Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway DVD. He would later star as Angel Schunard in the national tour of Rent as well as the special Rent at The Hollywood Bowl.

Leung returned to Broadway in the 2011 revival of Godspell, made his Off-Broadway debut in Manhattan Theatre Club's 2015 production of The World of Extreme Happiness, starred as (Young) Sam Kimura alongside George Takei and Lea Salonga in the 2015 Broadway premiere of Allegianceand originated the role of Steven in the 2016 Broadway premiere of the a cappella musical In Transit.

On television, Leung is perhaps best known for his role as Wes, a member of the Dalton Academy Warblers, on Glee. He appeared in the popular musical TV series from 2010 to 2011. As a recording artist, Leung has released two studio albums to date: I'll Cover You​ (2012) and Songs for You (2015), as well as an EP called Getaway (2005).

Leung assumed the title role in Disney's Aladdin on June 9, 2017, and remained with the production through February 17, 2019.
