Matthew Rhys

Matthew Rhys stars as Richard Burton in Playing Burton at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in Lincoln Center Theater's 2026-27 season.

Rhys is best known for his TV roles as Philip Jennings in The Americans (Emmy, Critics' Choice Television Awards), Chuck Palmer in Girls (Emmy nomination), the title role in Perry Mason (Emmy nomination), and Kevin Walker in Brothers & Sisters, Nile Jarvis in The Beast in Me, and Tom Loftis in Widow's Bay.

He has also appeared extensively in theatre in London's West End and in Wales. His credits include multiple Shakespeare plays — such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and King Lear — and the premiere of Playing Burton at the Welsh National Theatre.
