Currently, all Broadway productions are suspended to May 2021. But, plans for Hamilton's return to Broadway are already in the works, with a projected reopening date of Jul. 4, 2021.
As reported in Page Six, Broadway theatres are expected to reopen in June 2021, but Hamilton is planning to be the first show. On April 29, Mayor Bill de Blasio said that NYC should fully reopen from July 1, with Broadway shows coming soon. Hamilton producers are aiming to tie the return of live theatre with the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Hamilton will be able to reopen before most productions too, as a result of its high profit performances. Consequently, performances of Hamilton could be staged to a socially distant audience and be profitable in the long run.
Opening at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2015, Hamilton is one of the century's biggest musicals, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 11 Tony Awards including Best Musical. The musical features a book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Hamilton was made available to watch on Disney+ in July 2020.
Currently, no shows are projected to reopen until summer or fall 2021. Productions postponed so far include the world premiere of MJ The Musical starring Ephraim Sykes and Hugh Jackman in the Broadway revival of The Music Man.
