‘Hamilton’ film recognized by American Film Institute

'Ma Rainey's Black Bottom' and 'One Night in Miami' were also honored.

The Hamilton film was originally slated for an October 2021 release, but was bumped up by over a year and released on Disney+. As well as being entered for Golden Globe musical categories, Hamilton has been honored by the American Film Institute. Hamilton is one of many theatre film adaptations recognized by the AFI, with this year's awards taking place on February 26.

Starring the original Broadway cast, the filmed performance of Hamilton was seen by over 2.5 million people on Disney+ during its opening fortnight. The cast stars Lin-Manuel Miranda as the title founding father, alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldberry, Christopher Jackson, Daveed Diggs and Jonathan Groff and can be watched on Disney+.

The American Film Institute's movies of the year include Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, released on Netflix in December 2020. One Night in Miami also made the list, now available to watch on Amazon PrimeDa 5 Bloods, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Soul, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Nomadland and Sound of Metal completes the film list.

The 2020 American Film Institute Awards will take place on February 26.
