‘Hamilton’ picks up 12 Emmy nominations, as well as nods for Broadway stars Cynthia Erivo and Uzo Aduba
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 19.
The full list of nominations for this year's Emmy Awards were announced on July 13. The film adaptation of Hamilton, recorded at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, picked up 12 nominations, with David Byrne's American Utopia getting six nods. The 2021 Emmy Awards will take place on September 19.
Many of the original Hamilton cast have picked up individual Emmy nominations for their performances. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. are both nominated in the Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category. Daveed Diggs, Anthony Ramos and Jonathan Groff are all in the Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category, with Renée Elise Goldberry and Phillipa Soo in the Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie category.
In total, Hamilton has 12 Emmy nominations, rounded off by Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded); Picture Editing for Variety Programming; Sound Mixing for a Variety Series or Special; and Technical Direction, Camerawork, and Video Control for a Special.
Ahead of David Byrne's American Utopia reopening on Broadway at St. James Theatre, the musical show is nominated for six Emmys including Best Director for Spike Lee. Billy Porter receives their second Emmy nomination for Pose in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Pose's Mj Rodriguez makes history as the first transgender actress to be nominated in a lead category for playing Blanca Rodriguez.
Uzo Aduba is also nominated in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for her performance as Dr. Brooke Taylor in In Treatment. Aduba is returning to Broadway this fall in Clyde's, with Clyde's tickets on sale now.
Phylicia Rashad is nominated for her guest appearance in This Is Us. Rashad will lead the cast of Skeleton Crew, with performances at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre this winter.
