Lincoln Center Theater has now announced complete casting for the previously announced New York premiere of acclaimed playwright Tom Stoppard's The Hard Problem, directed by multiple time Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien, which will begin previews at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater on October 25, 2018, ahead of an official opening on November 19 and a limited engagement through to January 6, 2019.
The cast of The Hard Problem includes (in alphabetical order) Eshan Bay (as Amal), Adelaide Clemens (as Hilary), Nina Grollman (as Julia), Katie Beth Hall (as Cathy), Chris O’Shea (as Spike), Robert Petkoff (as Leo), Tara Summers (as Ursula), Jon Tenney (as Jerry), and Karoline Xu (as Bo), with ensemble members John Patrick Doherty, Eleanor Handley, Olivia Hebert, Sagar Kiran, Madeleine Pace, Baylen Thomas, and Kim N. Wong.
Synopsis: "Hilary is a young psychology researcher at the Krohl Institute for Brain Science where psychology and biology meet. If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness? This is “the hard problem” facing science, and for Hilary the possibility of genuine altruism, without a hidden Darwinian self-interest, depends on the answer. Meanwhile she is nursing a private sorrow. She needs a miracle and is prepared to pray for one."
The creative team features scenic design by David Rockwell, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Japhy Weideman, sound design by Jill BC Du Boff, and original music by Bob James.
The world premiere of The Hard Problem was staged at London's National Theatre in 2015, with an American debut following in 2016 at the Wilma Theatre in Philadelphia.
