Manhattan Theatre Club will present a Broadway revival of Clifford Odets's classic drama Awake and Sing! this winter, with performances beginning in December 2026 ahead of a January 2027 opening night at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Exact dates have yet to be shared.
The cast includes Tony Award winner Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge! The Musical) as Uncle Morty, Tony and Emmy nominee Jessica Hecht (Eureka Day) as Bessie Berger, and Tony nominee Jeremy Shamos (Clybourne Park on Broadway, Only Murders in the Building) as Myron Berger, under the direction of Tyne Rafaeli in her Broadway debut.
Awake and Sing! is set in the 1930s Bronx, where three generations of the Berger family, all living in a hot and cramped tenement, grapple with their differing ideas of the American dream. The show premiered on Broadway in 1935 and has been revived five other times since.
“Awake and Sing! is one of the great masterpieces of our canon — it makes you laugh and breaks your heart in one fell swoop,” said MTC artistic director Nicki Hunter in a statement. “Though Odets wrote this story of a family caught between the life they imagined and the one they were saddled with nearly a century ago, its questions of ambition and sacrifice feel as timely as ever."
Additional cast and creative team members for Awake and Sing! have yet to be announced.
Awake and Sing! joins two other previously announced productions in MTC's Broadway season: School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play in the fall and Montauk, starring Laura Linney, in the spring. MTC will also present The Unbelievers off Broadway, with more shows to be announced.
